In the new Chinese Navy, there are also new ships that inherit the names of the previous generation, but in the past, there were some frigates, destroyers, and light cruisers, and large warships, especially battleships, and this was the first time.

The Chiyou class is China's earliest Fuxi-class super dreadnought ships No. 3 to No. 8, namely Houyi, Chiyou, Xuanyuan, Shennong, Dayu and Kuafu. Since the second half of 1930, these six Fuxi-class ships have been docked for thorough modernization and refit.

The first No. 1 ship "Fuxi" and No. 2 ship "Nuwa" did not join the transformation plan, because during the Battle of the Mediterranean, they were attacked by Italian torpedo boats, were hit by multiple torpedoes, and almost knelt down. Although they narrowly escaped the fate of becoming a deep-sea fleet with their good underwater defenses, their hulls were also badly damaged. The Fuxi and Nuwa were officially decommissioned in February 1930 after several years as training ships. Because this is China's first large-scale capital ship, the historical significance is huge, and they are also all meritorious ships, so after being decommissioned, they were not dismantled, but converted into a battleship museum. The Fuxi Museum was placed in Qingdao and the Nuwa Museum was placed in Shanghai, and after more than a year of refit and refurbishment, the Museum of the Two Battleships was officially opened to visitors in June 1931.

More than 100 projects were involved in the renovation of the six Fuxi-class ships in service, the most important of which were the upgrading of the main guns, power systems and armor. The original triple 360 mm guns were replaced with twin 420 mm 50x diameter guns, the power system was changed from steam turbines to gas turbines, the original main armor belt was upgraded from single-layer armor to composite armor, and the armor in other positions was also thickened and replaced. In addition, there is also the work of upgrading the computer system, radar, and fire control system, upgrading the secondary guns, anti-aircraft guns, and bow sonar, widening the anti-mine salient, and reshaping the underwater shape.

After modernization, the standard displacement rose to 41,500 tons, the increased displacement was mainly due to the widening of the mine protection salient, the hull was 5 meters wider than before, the hull was also trimmed and the armor was thickened.

After the expiration of the Navy holiday, the six Fuxi-class ships underwent a second modernization refit from January 1937. This time the changes were minor, mainly to upgrade the computer system and fire control system. The crane, catapult and parking bracket of the original seaplane were removed, replaced with a drone catapult, equipped with 6 "Vespa" drones, and a new helicopter take-off and landing platform was added, which can park 3 helicopters.

The other is to remove all 40 mm and 20 mm anti-aircraft guns and replace them with six new 30 mm close-in guns. This is a seven-barreled turning tube cannon, and the blueprint is 1130 of the original Space-Time Great Picture Dynasty. The most important improvement is the addition of missiles, both anti-ship missiles and anti-aircraft missiles. After a series of magic changes, it is very different from the previous Fuxi class, and the Fuxi has been decommissioned, so these six battleships have been renamed the "Chiyou class".

The two Qinling-class ships also withdrew from the front line at about the same time as the Fuxi and Nuwa, and they were originally made because the American dockyard was not enough to make an emergency weakened version, and there was no margin in its own design, and the space for transformation and upgrading was very small, and the foundation was not good, so it was not included in the modernization plan. Since 1930, the two Qinling-class ships have been transferred to the second line and served as training ships.

In the thirties, the four Sunwu class ships were already outdated, so they began to be docked in 1931 for modernization. The other modifications are similar to those of the Chiyou class, but their 390mm guns have not moved. In 1938 a second modernization was carried out, this time with a quadruple 390-mm gun replaced by a triple 460-mm 50-diameter gun.

Although the four Li Jing-class ships that were commissioned at the end of World War I and the four Yuefei-class ships that were commissioned after World War I were all 420-mm main guns, they had already taken into account future life extension and upgrading during the design period, so they left a considerable amount of redundancy. Their hull structure and turret mounts were designed according to the 460 mm gun. So after the end of the naval holiday, they have also undergone main gun upgrades and comprehensive modernization. All of them have been transformed into "cutting-edge" battleships equipped with triple 460 mm 50 times diameter guns and a speed of more than 30 knots.
