Chapter 2 Someone is going to be unlucky
Regarding the attitude of the Croats, the Hungarian military had been prepared for a long time, but Kossuth was somewhat broken, he could not accept that he had offered such generous conditions, and that the cause of the Magyars was so glorious and great.
Jelačić, who refused the proposal, as a lackey of the Empire, and the minions of the Habsburgs were definitely the target of priority sanctions.
However, neither the old aristocracy nor the future leaders of the Hungarian army were willing to take over this hot potato.
First of all, it is not easy to go to the mountains to suppress bandits, and the terrain in Croatia is complicated, even if you can win the frontal battle, the speed of advancement will not be very ideal.
Secondly, Croatia is considered by the Hungarians to be a backwood, and the lack of oil and water in such a place will make the soldiers unmotivated.
Last but not least, Croatia had 80,000 regular troops, a large number of fortifications, and a strong people, who would not surrender easily.
Although the Hungarians felt that Jelačić lacked brains, they also admitted that the man was a tough man, so a very awkward situation arose.
No one on the Hungarian side wanted to be the first bird, and Kossuth could not allow that to happen, and he appointed a military aristocrat to support Hungary.
Mogao Janos was in a position of non-superiority until 1848, and it was not until he became acquainted with Kosuth that he was taken seriously.
But this old man's luck also ended here, he met Prince Wendy Schretz on his first expedition with his army, and then returned defeated.
That's right, it's the Prince Wendy Schretz who lacks military talent, so Mogao Janos has been unjust for many years.
Mogau Janos led his troops for the second time, the Hungarian rebellion was nearing its end, and his mission was to ensure that Budapest was not captured.
It was obviously an impossible task, but he was also one of the last thirteen victims due to his stubborn resistance and the lack of relatives and friends to help him clear it.
His luck in this life is still not good, Croatia can't afford not to fight, but Kosuth really can't get too many troops for him.
Therefore, Mogao Yanos could only lead an army of 50,000 men, but in fact less than 30,000 to go into the mountains to suppress bandits.
Historically, the Croats did not have a strong concept of nation before 1848, and there were two main points of conflict between them and the Hungarian government.
The first was the attitude towards the Habsburgs, who chose loyalty, did not want to secede from the empire, and did not even have a strong desire to expand their autonomy.
The second is the issue of language and culture, since Széchenyi called for the revival of Hungary, the Hungarian parliament began to ban all languages except Hungarian, including German and Latin.
Naturally, this move was opposed by representatives of other nationalities in the Crown of St. Stephen, but no one dared to really stand out, except for the Croats.
It is a very defying fact that the Croatian aristocracy did not fight for their right to use the Croatian language, they demanded the right to use German and Latin in parliament.
For this reason, the Croatian aristocracy had been in constant conflict with the mainstream Hungarian powers since the thirties of the nineteenth century, but the latter did not dare to make it too obvious, since German and Latin also involved the state and religion.
In addition to this, the erasure and stigmatization of other national cultures was intolerable, and a new group of Hungarian historians emerged at that time, with the slogan "There are no heroes except Magyars, all glory belongs to Hungary".
For this reason, they invented and created a lot of history, and the Magyars ancestors were brave and invincible, conquered Europe as Asians, and successfully defended Europe as Europeans.
Alchebert Bartoli, the notorious vampire countess in history, is said to have killed 650 maidens in thirty years and 3,000 in order to keep her youth alive.
And another prototype of the rebel Bluebeard in Western fairy tales, Marshal Guildles of France, only killed 300 boys in eight years.
Alchebert Bartoli drained the maidens' blood and used it for drinking and bathing.
In short, such a man should not be close to the good guys, but for a long time Alchebert Bartoli was baptized as a national hero against the Austrians, because she used all the German maids around her to juice.
In contrast to the mad whitewashing of Magyar heroes was the erasure of other national heroes, almost all of whom had become savage, ignorant bandits, German philosophers were a bunch of self-righteous clowns, and the sages of the ancient Roman period in Italy were useless waste.
The word robber pierces the hearts of Croats because they are not ashamed of plunder, but that doesn't mean they like to be called robbers.
In fact, Croatian nationalism is largely motivated by the Hungarians, whose obliteration of language and culture has led to a strong revolt among the Croats.
As a result, Croatian nationalism gradually awakened in the course of a confrontation that began to collect and organize Croatian history and language in an attempt to counter the Hungarians.
Compared to the Croats, the Serbs were much worse.
First of all, the Serbian population is too small, and because of the relative dispersion of the settlements, it is difficult to gather enough strength except in Vojvodina.
There were also Serb settlements in Banat, Slavonia, Krajina, but none of them were very strong.
The Serbs were a rather responsive people to the call of the new Hungary, and their representatives enthusiastically attended the pledge meeting in Budapest.
Although the Serbs were a marginal ethnic group in the Austrian Empire, they also wanted to expand their autonomy, after all, the Hungarian jewel was in the forefront.
However, when the Serbian delegates saw Kossuth's desire to extend the autonomy of the Serbs, preferably to a piece of land, they were informed.
"The true meaning of freedom lies in the recognition of the inhabitants of the fatherland as a whole, not as a division into hierarchical or privileged groups, and it gives the gospel of common liberty to all, regardless of language or religion."
Although it was a little unclear, the representative of the Serbs decided to continue listening, after all, it sounded lofty, and it mentioned equality and freedom, and such beautiful words must not be too bad.
However, they were soon disappointed, because what Kosuth really wanted to say was.
"For the kingdom to be united, Hungarian must be the only official language."
Finally, at the swearing-in meeting against the Austrian Empire, Kossuth solemnly declared: "Under the sacred crown of Hungary, I recognize only one country, one people - the Great Magyars!" Banzai! ”
"Hooray!"
There was a thunderous roar of laughter, but the Serb representatives slipped out of the room, wanting to restore the patriarchal system and get a piece of land of their own from the Austrian Empire, not to work for the Hungarians for free.
However, the weaker people did not have the right to bargain, and when the Hungarian officials and troops arrived, the Serbs had no choice but to join or be forced to join the Hungarian cause.
Some villages tried to invoke the Imperial Code to protect their legal rights, while others organized militias to try to defend their rights by force.
The Serbs of this era were not lacking in blood, and the harsh living environment tempered their strong will.
However, everything was in vain, and the Orthodox priest who tried to quote the imperial code was crucified, with that copy of the Austrian Imperial code still hanging on his chest.
The militia of Serbia was slaughtered like pigs and dogs by the cavalry of the Magyars, and those who surrendered could not escape the fate of being hanged.
In every village the Hungarians passed, the trees were covered with the corpses of Serbs.
The most typical is a small town called Bečei in Patna, which resisted the forced expropriation of the Hungarians and organized a militia.
Unfortunately, the militia was completely vulnerable to the regular army, according to survivors:
"The Magyars were furious. After hours of chaos and disorder, a series of grave violence ensued, with at least 250 Serbs slaughtered.
It's so scary to think about! This is the real war of extermination."
Bechey's inhabitants numbered less than a thousand, and the young men were almost wiped out after the massacre.
The belongings of the townspeople also became the spoils of the Magyars, and such tragedies were played out in Serbian villages one after another.
General Janos Hrabowski presided over the massacre of Serbs, and he always had only one thing to do, and that was to exterminate them.
However, the massacre also has to pay attention to methods, he always kills some and leaves some hope for the victims, so as to reduce resistance.
Historically, his policy of slaughter began in November 1848 and lasted until February 1849, when it was forced to cease due to the offensive pressure of the Austrian Empire.
General Janos Hrabowski claimed that he was only faithfully carrying out the orders given by the Hungarian government and was ultimately saved from liquidation after the war.
Kossuth, for his part, called him a traitor to Hungary and that the massacre was a personal act of Janos Hrabowski and had nothing to do with the Hungarian government.
The action that lasted for nearly four months, if it was an individual act, then this person's energy was really great.
According to the famous "traitor" Karl Leiningen-Count Westburg, it was the Serbs who were the first to attack the Hungarians and carry out massacres in the surrounding towns.
The great Hungarian army was forced to defend itself, and the civilians were duly punished for helping the partisans.
As for the burning of the village, there were two reasons, the main of which was that the Serbs did not properly heat their homes in winter, which caused the fire to pour sewage on the heads of Hungary.
The second point is that the fighting in some villages is too fierce, and there are too many corpses to be buried, so burns are used to prevent the spread of the disease.
Due to their geographical dispersion, the Serbs could not have a strong figure like Jelačić who could turn the tide.
However, unlike history, the Serbs were not without escape, as Franz's previous relocation plan in Belgrade meant that there were nearly 300,000 Serbs in Vojvodina at this time and were under royal patronage.
So a large number of Serbs fled to Vojvodina.
