Although it has the effect of burning off oxygen, air is convective. A thermobaric bomb goes down and burns off the nearby oxygen, creating a low-pressure area, and the air will be replenished in a few minutes. Unless a large number of thermobaric bombs are dropped at one time to burn all the oxygen in the vicinity, there will be a suffocation effect caused by air in the central area that has no time to replenish.

However, thermobaric bombs have an advantage that bombs can't compare, that is, curve lethality.

Generally, when a bomb explodes, its shrapnel moves in a straight line, so lying down or hiding in a trench foxhole and other places has a great chance of escaping damage. Therefore, in trenches and fortifications, where there are anti-artillery holes, the power of the bomb will be greatly reduced, and the effect will be small unless it is a direct hit or a close shot.

But it's a different story with thermobaric bombs. Its main damage is based on temperature and shock wave pressure fronts, which can be turned and drilled, and its power and penetration are much higher than those of bombs. For example, the shrapnel of an ordinary 1,000-kilogram bomb can fly to a distance of 100~150 meters in an open field and still have lethality. However, if the target is hiding in a trench, it will generally be fine unless it lands within 20 meters. On the other hand, a one-ton thermobaric bomb with an open killing radius of 100 meters, even if the target is hiding in a trench, its killing radius is about 60~80 meters. If it explodes in a cave or tunnel, the killing distance of the thermobaric bomb front will not only not decrease, but will increase dramatically, because the shock wave energy is concentrated in several specific directions.

That is to say, when the lethality of ordinary bombs and thermobaric bombs in open land is not much different, when they are taken to the trench fortification area, the difference in the killing radius of the two sides immediately becomes 6~8 times. The killing area is the square of the radius, that is, 36~64 times. This is the greatest value of thermobaric bombs.
