Chapter 18: A big decision was made today
There is beauty in simple life.
The green grass, swaying in the soft wind, carries a soothing dry heat. It suggests that a soft summer is about to descend on the whole world.
Birch and I escaped the clutches of the yokai, and we walked in blissful silence for days.
I looked up at the sun, my friend walking, her "hand", which I now know, was clinging to the "straps" of the backpack.

She was hungry.
My friend can only stay alive on the sugar I offer her, and only on the hope that the sun brings us.
However, there is also beauty in this simplicity. Hunger.
Imagine being alive and still being hungry. It's so simple, yet so grandiose.
hands. Shoulder straps. Hunger. How many more such unique concepts are there in the world?
A word can describe everything, whether it is a feeling or a thing in the material world, or even something in the spiritual world.
How many words are there?
There are definitely many.
It's the best.
I never knew there were so many words. I want to learn more words. I'm sure Birch knows a lot of words.
- I'm thinking, will she teach me?
That's fantastic.
If only I had a way to ask you.
Oh.
I guess it doesn't matter. Before, I knew very few words and lived a good life. Now, I have learned a lot of words and life is still good.
No matter how many words I learned, life was good.
Birch, since "reaching level five", has been using what little energy she has to consider a series of options, all of which I don't quite understand.
She read her book and flipped through many pages, like an excited bird, digging through the bushes, looking for solid material to build a nest in.
I think Birch is also looking for sturdy materials to build nests. However, neither the materials she sought nor the nest she hoped to build belonged to the material world.
- I am a figurative sunflower.
Ha ha.
Birch sighed, closed the book and prepared for bed, and we stared at each other for a moment.
Hello.
I think your face looks good.

"I think if I go to a class, I can really help us," she said, breaking our usual silence. She put her hands behind her head and lay on the grass next to my stem. Her gaze swept over my face to the starry sky, and I, the most curious of all, turned my head to gaze.
- I wonder, are we looking at the same star now?
"You know what? She asked, and I noticed that she raised a bony arm and pointed it to the sky. But I don't quite understand why. She just lay on the grass and raised her arms upward, her hand stretched out as if it were a stem, as if she wanted to grasp the stars.
Yes.
I understand.
Yes.
Looking back at the sky, I realized that I wished I had hands like hers.
- And then, maybe the two of us, maybe we can catch the sun from the darkness together.
However, this is a stupid idea.
Your arms are too short, Birch. But I like your spirit. Let's face the sun again tomorrow.
I'm a sunflower.
- Even if I don't have hands.
The bird flew away in a panic, its feathers scattered in the air.
We were on a high place, and Birch had climbed a tree again.
Today, she discovered a nest. There are eggs in the nest. She grabbed a bunch and carefully reached into her backpack and tucked them in, placing their fragile bodies on my roots one by one. I wrapped them in my roots, caressing them tenderly, protecting her baby, and she slowly walked down the tree and towards the ground. It seems that today, there will be food.
We arrived at the soil and Birch, albeit not at night, lit a fire.
She gently removed the eggs from my nest and placed them on the edge of the fire, on a few slowly heated stones.
We sit, wait, watch. I looked up at the tree and saw a pained little bird sitting there, its treasure had been plundered.
- I would like to say that I feel good. After all, the birds stole my precious seeds. So that seems fair.
However, I was not happy for the bird's suffering.
Oh. That's life.
Birch buzzed again, humming a song as he poked the fire with his stick, and his eyes glittered with a precious light, looking at the eggs like a pile of the brightest fire.
That's kind of a flat for me.

Life is complicated.
"A druid, perhaps?" Birch asked. She handed me the book and pointed to some scribbled handwriting inside.
I leaned down, trying to figure out what she was showing for me. But I can't understand anything.
I looked up at the midday sun indifferently. I'm watching carefully to make sure we're still moving in the right direction.

We're here for tourism.
"I mean, it's really for you, you know?" Birch asked, his gaze returning to the book.
-I do not know.
"I bet we can combine all sorts of magical spells," she suggests. "I can finally start helping you."
Yes. So many words.
My head was buzzing.
How many words did you just say? More than I've ever heard.
How unusual. Where do I begin to understand her question, which I only vaguely understand?
She wants to expand her magic. I guess it's in her nature.
- Hunters always want to fight better. Predators are eager to stand at the top.
Our hunt proves that we are stronger than the yokai, just as we are stronger than her kind, just as we are stronger than the birds and rabbits. But we're not on top of the thorn deer. We are not above the waters. There are many things, many predators and dangers that are far more deadly than ours.
- Amazing, right?
How much can hunt us down? Kill us? What do we eat?
Wow.
Life is indeed exciting.
Very good.
I turned my gaze back to Birch, his eyes lifted and looked expectantly into my face.
I didn't know how to answer her, so I lowered my face and put my face on the book, on the open page.
When I retracted it, I saw her smiling, and there was a little egg yellow stain on the corner of her mouth.
Her face looked warm, and she nodded to me, wasting water again.
- What a fool she's in.
It won't rain for a few more days.
Oh.
She's a fool, but she's my friend.

(Birch) chose her elementary class: [De]
Druid: Originally a spellcaster class, druids are keenly attuned to nature's ways. They are in much better physical condition than other spellcasters, such as wizards. Druids are aligned with the natural forces and magic of the world, drawing energy from any organic source of environmental magic.

Wow.
That's a lot to talk about.
My previous theory was correct.
- What a wonderful world.
How can one keep up with so many different things?
To be honest, I prefer a slower pace of life.
While my friends buzzed like bees, I, as the smarter of the two, spread my petals and soaked up the sun.
