Chapter 30: I've Been to That Mountain

Birch struggled to walk and climbed up the mountain path.

This road was not dug out with toiling hands or with dug claws, but was cut through countless generations of wind and rain.

We've been walking all day since we came ashore, and now it's the beginning of the night, and we're starting to get up slowly.

As we get closer to the sky and closer to where the sun hangs most of the time, the weather is getting colder. There is very little windproof here.

The rocky terrain shook, and the stones that Birch had stepped on loosened.

- There is a cave in front of us.

"Let's spend the night here," Birch said, rubbing his head. "I don't feel good."

Yes.

Birch, there are many reasons why you are uncomfortable.

I guess your body is unhappy with the raw crab meat, unhappy with the exertion of your torn muscles, unhappy with the extreme hunger in your stomach.

- But I think it's unwise.

Birch looked around the cave.

It's a shallow thing, nothing more than a hollow hole in the rocks of the mountain. But it provides shelter from the elements.

She sat down and let out a long exhale, her head drooping against the rock the moment she fell. My friend was so exhausted that even I couldn't do anything about it.

This is the most unfortunate.

I looked around from where we were sitting and had an overview of the land behind us.

The sky is bright tonight, but not because of the moon, it has been hidden. It's because of this complicated starry sky, which heavily envelops the whole world.

It seems that I have no choice.

(Sunflower) used: (Flower Resonance)

I can't speak to the mycelium of mushrooms from here, because there is almost no loose soil in the mountains. But I know the yokai are already on their way.

I can only hope that the spiders will dissuade the first people and slow them down. At least until Birch rests for a while.

My roots meander down her body, snaking like a viper onto the rocks.

It took a long time, but I had to start digging holes in the stones. Maybe I can give us more time?

Birch had slept for hours, and her body was recovering as best she could from severe malnutrition and overwork.

For her sake I ate a few spiders, which had begun to climb up the hill with my roots, and I ate them as if they were blood. Then, I took this paste and introduced it through my thicker roots. While she was resting, I shoved the spider slurry into her stomach.

Sleep well, Birch. Heal. Eaten. Grow strong and fat.

I need you to do this.

I can't get into heaven without you.

My other roots sink deep into the loose stones of the mountains.

Midnight has passed. This is precious time that we will never be able to recover.

Birch was still sleeping in a state where I couldn't wake her up.

Below us, under the starry sky that covers the entire world, another starry sky has emerged.

The ground is covered with stars, just like the sky.

- Firelight.

Torch.

The goblin tribe is moving down the world below us, in our direction.

I suspect they're near the area where the cows are. For its sake, I hope it's no longer there, to a distant pasture.

However, we seem to be lucky. The swarm seems to be slowing down. It seems that they are also resting for the night.

Today the god of luck has favored us.

But the first of them, Scouts and Pathfinders, they will be coming soon.

- I prepare.

Something sniffed, hummed, and staggered in the darkness around us.

My roots were gently laid out in the myriad interconnected cobwebs, and I felt a vibration when something stepped into one of the cobwebs.

Thousands of spiders' legs flew at the harasser, and although it was much larger than the flies or moths they usually caught, many spiders began to eat this little leprechaun like any other insect.

No screaming.

I guess the goblin just has too many spiders in its mouth.

The spiders retreat in the dark and return to their webs.

Then, another one came.

This dance went on for a while, and the goblin scouts sniffed out our tracks, but always encountered webs or traps woven by hungry spiders, who could not find insects at such heights.

Birch continued to sleep.

She muttered about bees or something.

I do not quite understand.

But I love watching her cringe like a frightened rabbit at rest. It's lovely.

I want to know.

Maybe I'm too stressed?

My roots wrapped around its neck, and it kicked around in the dirt, grabbing my roots.

I've become so obsessed with the idea of heaven, with the idea of adventure, that maybe I'm missing the whole point?

- The goblin choked and crackled as life left its container.

After all, it wasn't my idea to find paradise. This is my best friend Birch's. I just adopted it as I adopted her.

And here I am, forcing her hands and legs to move towards that place as if I had thought of it.

Heaven is not going anywhere.

- Leprechaun spasms. Its hands became weak and loosened my roots, and the bones in the back of its neck broke.

What a fool I am.

I was so fascinated by the destination that I neglected the journey. This trip brought me a lot.

It dawned on me that I was overemphasizing the importance of the reward at the end of the journey. But I'm ignoring what I've already gotten in return.

These are far more important than heaven.

Another goblin walked towards us along the cliff.

It screamed, clutching its charred face and eyes, and fell into the darkness.

I looked up at the moon.

My eyes were always on the sun.

- But maybe the moon is also worth seeing?

Everyone knows I'm a critic. Maybe it's my own stupidity?

The fact that I realized this, but did nothing to correct it, showed my weakness, which was the least suitable for sunflowers.

The four corpses fell to the ground, quickly surrounded by hungry spiders. They disappear into the darkness. The fifth goblin grabbed its face and eyes and began to tear them with its claws. It kept digging until it fell to the ground and died.

I have to try to do better.

My best friend, Birch, is counting on me.

Am I not here for this?

My face was featureless, my eyes were gone, and I looked up at the moon.

The moon is the hardest thing to understand.

The sun comes out every day, but it always comes in the same form.

- Bright. Full.

The moon, however, is different.

Some nights the moon only appears partially, some nights are full, and some nights do not appear at all. It changes itself every day, but it continues its journey, despite the changes it goes through every night.

Maybe we can learn from this?

Maybe I should be a little more like the moon?

- Long-lasting. But willing to go through change. Bright. But be bright in a dark place, so that others can follow me, just as I follow the sun.

Well.

Hundreds of feet of mountain stretches upwards.

The spider told me a lot.

However, Birch was still resting and had fallen into a deep sleep. Her mind is full of dreams, and her belly is stuffed with processed spider meat.

Get well, Birch.

Tonight, I will be a moonflower.

- I hope you don't find my change in this regard unpleasant.

I turned my head and looked into the darkness below, at the hundreds of silhouettes and eyes that were becoming clear in the darkness.

It's time.

My roots dug deep into the rocks of the mountain, stretched out overnight, and doused myself with a heavy, mineral-rich water that had been resting in the porous rocks of the heart of the mountain.

The first advancing legion of goblins is coming towards us, and they have sniffed out us.

Something roared in the darkness, looking over us.

Good bye.

(Sunflower) used: (hard water)

The rock crackled and crackled in half. Everywhere I could see in the warm moonlight, there was a crack running through the mountain.

The surface of the mountain cracked and slid down, taking a hundred of them, followed by several youkai, who fell crookedly and shrieked and disappeared into the darkness.

They died horribly.

Very good.

That was a long time later.

Birch straightened up and yawned like a funny cat. I find it most pleasing to watch from my dangerous vantage point.

As she moved, I could feel her back bouncing and her bones creaking.

The sun shone on both of us. A new day has arrived.

She blinked and rubbed her face and continued to stretch.

Judging by her movements, the plump belly and strong rest seem to have a magical effect on her composition.

"Good morning," said Birch, looking at me sleepily.

Good morning, Birch.

I looked up and refocused my attention on the sun.

- Then I turned around again and went to look at her.

The sun will come out tomorrow. But I only have Birch now. My time with her was much harder than the time I spent with the sun.

Birch screamed in terror, fell to his knees in terror, and grabbed me. I sat sideways on the edge of a cliff and was certainly not here last night. Mysterious.

Ha ha.

We almost died.

It's funny.

I was an old sunflower and I was starting to understand something about life that I hadn't seen before. I wonder, Birch, did you see it when your fingers grabbed my and clung to me?

- The truth about our blood relationship?

I am a moonflower.
