133 Griffith's Experiment
After the Lunar New Year in 1928, the guests who came to London from Cambridge University to accompany Chen Muwu for the New Year returned to the school one after another.
Chen Muwu did not go back to Cambridge with everyone, nor did he immediately rush to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, to continue to preside over his work of building a membership accelerator, but remained at his home in London.
One of the reasons he did this was because he had already drawn the drawings of the various parts of the cyclotron before leaving Stockholm, and now they had been handed over to the factory in the UK.
When the factory finishes processing all these parts, Chen Muwu will transport them back to Sweden to assemble the first cyclotron in human history.
The reason why he did not choose a local factory in Stockholm, but brought the drawings back to the UK, is because when he was at Cambridge University, the Cavendish laboratory has always been in a cooperative relationship with this factory, and the factory has accumulated a lot of experience, and Chen Muwu has more trust in the quality of the parts they produce.
Rather than finding a new factory in Sweden that doesn't know what to do, it would be better to go the extra mile and make sure that the cyclotron, which costs a lot of money, is foolproof.
Chen estimates that it could take a month, two, or even three months for the factory to process the large number of parts he ordered.
When the factory sent a telegram informing him that the parts had been produced.
At that time, Chen Muwu left the UK again and returned to Sweden.
They agreed in advance that the factory would transport the parts to Norwich, northeast England, and that Zhao Zhongyao and Cockcroft would escort the parts onto the ship from Norwich to Stockholm by sea.
The advantage of this is that there is no need to constantly switch modes of transport and constantly change trains to train heads north at train stations in major European cities.
Of course, Chen Muwu still chose to take my car by land, and he still had lingering fears about the night of horror on the Beihai steamer.
While waiting for a telegram from the factory, Zhao Zhongyao also returned to Cambridge University with the army.
Although he is a glamorous new Nobel laureate in physics, he is also a student at the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University.
Because last year's graduation season, he and Cowcroft were sent by Chen Muwu to Europe and the United States respectively to install the latest product particle accelerator from the University of Cambridge for universities and laboratories that had placed orders, and delayed the doctoral dissertation defense meeting that year.
So after Zhao Zhongyao and Cockcroft won the Nobel Prize in Physics this time, they returned to Cavendi to go to the laboratory, and attended the celebration party specially held for them with Professor Wilson on the one hand, and on the other hand, they had to make up for the doctoral defense ceremony belonging to the two of them, so as to get a doctoral diploma from Cambridge University and firmly fasten the doctoral hat on their heads.
Because it is a special case, it is estimated that this defense meeting should be able to pass very easily, and it is likely to be just a formality.
Neither Cambridge University nor Cavendish Laboratories can afford to defend their doctoral dissertation while others have already won the Nobel Prize in Physics.
If this joke is really made, then not to mention the Cavendish Laboratory and Cambridge University, it is estimated that the whole of the United Kingdom will become the object of ridicule of people all over the world.
As the supervisor of Zhao Zhongyao and Cockcroft, as well as the head of the particle accelerator project, Chen Muwu had no plans to return to Cambridge to participate in the doctoral dissertation defense of the two of them.
This is not because Chen Muwu did not win the Nobel Prize in Physics this time, and there is a rift between the three of them.
Instead, Chen Muwu had to take advantage of the few months of making parts in the factory to make preparations before marriage.
For the past year, he has been running every day, either at Cambridge University or in Sweden.
Because of this incident, Chen Muwu has already been complained by Mrs. Chen for a long time, how can anyone get married soon, but he is not prepared at all?
The news that Chen Muwu lives in London is not a big secret to British newspapers.
Whether it is a big newspaper or a tabloid, in order to attract others to buy, there will always be a lot of space in each issue of the newspaper, so that more content and advertisements can be crammed, so that readers can spend a price to see more news, so that they feel that they are worth the money.
Journalists also like to inquire about the privacy of these celebrities, and as one of the most famous Chinese nationals at Cambridge University and even in the whole of the United Kingdom, Chen Muwu is of course classified as a celebrity by the newspaper.
Every day at Chen Muwu's home in London, he can welcome a lot of guests who come to visit.
Known, unrecognized, heard, unheard......
If every guest who comes to visit is brought into the house to talk to them, then Chen Muwu basically has no time left to do other things every day.
So he still took the old way and repeated the same set after he suddenly became famous in the sea.
Let the family members who received them at the door insist that they are not at home, and they must inquire about the name of the person who came, and let Chen Muwu judge for himself whether he wants to see or does not want to see this person, and then choose whether to come out to meet the guests, or continue to "hide in the small building to become a unity", and ignore this.
At least eight or nine out of ten of the ten guests who visit every day are yellows with black hair and black eyes, and almost all of them are Chinese.
The purpose of everyone visiting Chen Muwu is various:
Some people just want to meet Chen Muwu, as a kind of conversation with others after they return to China, it would be better if they could take a photo together;
Some people think that Chen Muwu is a teacher at the highest school in the United Kingdom, has won the Olympic gold medal, and won the Nobel Prize in Physics worth 80,000 yuan, and can live in such a luxurious house in the center of London, then he must be very rich.
If it is in China, in Qianhai, even in the concession that claims to have the best public security environment, Chen Muwu's reputation and family background, even if he is very well protected, will inevitably be targeted by people with ulterior motives, and then blackmailed, or even kidnapped.
But in London, England, although everyone respects Chen Muwu, they still don't look down on the yellow race, they can only be a little restrained, and no one wants to be targeted by the police in Scotland Yard, and then be arrested and eaten in prison.
The kidnapping should not happen, and there is no good reason for blackmail and blackmail in a foreign country, so these people with ulterior motives chose the most straightforward way to ask for money:
Borrow.
Each of them is well-dressed, and the clothes on their bodies are very exquisite in terms of version and fabric, and they are well-informed and have good conversations.
And the characters set up for themselves, basically without exception, are either international students in the UK, because of some changes in their families, they can no longer provide them with high tuition fees and living expenses;
Either he said that his business failed and he lost a lot of money in the UK, not to mention the working capital back to China, and he didn't even have the money to eat that day's meal.
They all hope that Chen Muwu can see the face of both Chinese people and help one or two.
This kind of extremely inferior deception actually made the Chen family almost fall for it once.
One day, Chen Muwu went out and went to the library of the Royal Society to look for papers, and Chen Muqiao and Chen Muping also had their own things and happened to be not at home.
Except for a few servants in the family, only the old lady who was the head of the house was left.
Fortunately, the kind-hearted Mrs. Chen has been impressed by the performance of the handful of snot and tears in front of her, the crying pear blossoms with rain, and the sincere liar, and when she was about to pay the money, Chen Muwu rushed back to her home, which finally prevented things from continuing to deteriorate.
It's not that he feels sorry for the few dollars that his mother might be cheated out of, but if this incident really happens, it will be a little too embarrassing.
After that, Chen Muqiao went to the Chinese Legation on Portland Street, and relied on his brother's friendship with the staff of the Legation to ask for a roster of Chinese students and businessmen who had studied and done business in London and the surrounding areas, so as to prevent similar things from happening again.
It's not like Chen Muwu hasn't seen anyone, and he hasn't borrowed a penny.
Under the introduction of some close friends, Chen Muwu still met some old and new friends.
For example, he met Zhu Guangqian, who was a teacher at Chunhui Middle School on the shore of Baima Lake in his hometown of Yuyu in the United Kingdom, and had a relationship with Chen Muwu.
The latter is now an international student at the University of Edinburgh, and he is about to get his degree in the UK, so during the winter break, he went to the continent on the other side of the English Channel to check out if there are any good ones there that can continue his studies.
It seems that these liberal arts students feel that France is the center of the liberal arts in Europe compared to England.
Ye Gongchao also studied in France for a few years after getting a master's degree from Cambridge University.
When Zhu Guangqian returned to Edinburgh, he passed through London and learned that Chen Muwu had finally appeared at his home in London, but it was said that the man had recently become very eccentric and refused to see visitors.
He came to visit with the attitude of trying it out, thinking that he might be rejected, but he didn't expect to be able to meet Chen Muwu smoothly.
In addition to Zhu Guangqian, Chen Muwu also met Zheng Zhenduo, who was disheartened by the domestic situation because of the massacre in April last year, so he boarded a ship in the sea to travel to European countries away from right and wrong.
This is not a new friend, but also an old acquaintance of Chen Muwu.
After graduating from university, Chen Muwu worked as an engineer in the Lianglu Railway Administration in Yanhai.
After graduating from the Shaojing Railway Management School in 1921, Zheng Zhenduo was assigned to the initial station of the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Railway, Hainan Station, as a trainee stationmaster, and Engineer Chen was under the jurisdiction of the two railway administrations.
The two of them are considered to be co-workers who have met a few times in the sea, so Zheng Zhenduo left his hometown this time and came to the UK, and Chen Muwu received him very warmly at home.
Chen Muwu is in London to receive friends and prepare for weddings, and various things are constantly happening in the world.
In January, Frederick Griffiths, a bacteriologist at the University of Liverpool, conducted the famous Griffith experiment that bears his name.
Chen Muwu remembers this experiment clearly, because it was once an experiment in a middle school biology textbook that could not be bypassed in the chapter on genetic material.
Griffith used two different types of Streptococcus pneumoniae to attack the immune system of mice, with the rough form of Streptococcus pneumoniae being non-toxic to mice, and the smooth form of Streptococcus pneumoniae being lethal to mice.
He used the two bacteria to make some permutations and combinations, and then observed the life and death of the mice, and finally came to the conclusion that the dead smooth bacteria contained a substance, or transformation factor, that can transform the non-virulent rough bacteria into lethal bacteria.
Later, after other people's research, the transition factor discovered by Griffith is actually the DNA of Streptococcus pneumoniae, and the Griffith experiment he did is the first experiment in the history of biology to indirectly prove that DNA is genetic material.
But people don't think so now, and Griffith is even ridiculed by his American counterparts.
In the mid-to-late twenties, the rapid economic development brought about by the Coolidge boom made more and more Americans begin to change their mentality.
Instead of seeing Britain and Europe as centers of science and culture, they began to laugh at their moneyless European shabby and pedantic.
After Griffith published his experiments, he was also ridiculed and questioned by Oswald Avery, a leading figure in the study of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the United States.
The latter believes that Griffith did not succeed in this experiment because the environment in his laboratory in the UK was too rudimentary, and the high temperature did not kill the bacteria completely, so that the death of the smooth bacteria could not be completely controlled, so that after the two bacteria were mixed, there were still some active smooth bacteria.
It is these active bacteria that cause the death of the mice, and it is not the smooth bacteria that produce some transition factors after death, which makes the non-toxic rough bacteria lethal.
Fortunately, the truth is irrefutable, and Griffith's experiment was quickly replicated by Avery in the laboratory of an American university by his American colleagues, thus proving the correctness of his experimental results, which made the proud and arrogant Avery completely shut up.
As a pioneer in DNA research, Griffith did not win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine because he and his assistants died in the German bombing of London in Britain a dozen years later in World War II.
Two world wars in succession not only shifted the center of the world from Britain from Europe to the United States, but also caused Britain to lose many excellent scientists.
For example, Moselle, who died in the trenches of World War I, and Griffith, who died in the bombing of London.
Since the British don't pay so much attention to their country's talents, then I'm sorry, Chen Muwu has to prepare in advance.
