172 Department of Physics, Northeastern University
According to Chen Muwu's previous confession, Shi Ruwei, who left the sea, went all the way north.
Everywhere he went, he would go to various well-known universities to greet the professors and teachers of physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and other sciences in the schools, and ask them to inform the students that the Swedish Legation in China was about to hold entrance exams for the Prince's College in the sea.
By the way, Shi Ruwei also had to inquire in various schools about the academic level of science students in China now.
Only by mastering the general academic level of the students can they use as a reference for the difficulty of the propositions in the future exams.
Fortunately, Chen Muwu did not choose to come up with the question by himself, and then Shi Ruwei brought the question back.
Because the physics level of today's college students is very different from the real situation.
Take Shaojing University, the most powerful institution of higher learning in the country, as an example, in 1925, the title of the graduation thesis of the Department of Physics of Shao University was as follows:
1. The history of the development of the quantum concept;
2. The history of the development of gas dynamics theory;
3. Discussion of the second law of thermodynamics;
4. Briefly describe Fresnel's contribution to optics;
5. Describe in detail the theory and application of the Michelson interferometer and the Fabry-Perot interferometer;
6. Design an eight-pole, 220kV, 100kV· A. Self-excited generator with an efficiency of 90%, and equipped with a full set of necessary accessories;
7. The development history, theory and application of three-stage vacuum tube;
8. The development of the concept of electromagnetic mass and its validation;
9. Briefly describe Hertz's work on electromagnetic waves;
10. Please describe the electrolyte properties of gas conduction;
11. Calculate the characteristic parameters of the circular antenna;
12. The theory of X-ray spectroscopy and its application in the analysis of the structure of matter;
Please describe all methods for determining the charge-to-mass ratio of cathode and anode rays;
14. Briefly describe the experimental and theoretical foundations of Rutherford-Bohr theory;
15. Please describe all the methods used to determine Avogadro's constant;
xvi. A brief description of Rutherford's work on radioactivity;
17. Please describe all methods for determining the amount of electronically charged;
XVIII. Briefly describe all J· The creative work of J. Thomson.
The above eighteen topics correspond to eighteen students from the Department of Physics of Shaojing University in 1925.
The teacher put the eighteen questions written in English into an envelope to shuffle the order, and then asked the students to draw one of them as the topic of their graduation thesis.
The main body of the dissertation can be written in Chinese, English, German and French, which not only tests the students' physics skills, but also tests their mastery of professional foreign languages.
But the difficulty of these eighteen questions is really not very flattering.
Rather than writing a dissertation, it's more like a book report.
At that time, as the university with the highest level of higher education in physics in the country, the physics level of its students was still the same.
Fortunately, Chen Muwu did not take the question for granted, but handed over the right to the question to Shi Ruwei and professors of the physics department of several universities in China.
Otherwise, the set of questions he took for granted would likely brew into a "tragedy" that no one could pass.
In addition to communicating with these fellow physicists, Shi Ruwei also visited the professors of Sinology who were to be invited on Chen Muwu's list, and asked them to go to the Prince College in Stockholm to help Chen Muwu.
Although most of the people on the list rejected Chen Muwu's invitation on the grounds that it was difficult to leave their homeland, they couldn't stand the fact that Chen Muwu's list was long enough, and Shi Ruwei also diligently visited the past one by one according to the names on the list.
So in the end, he finally invited a group of people led by Guo Shangwu and Xu Zhimo to go to the Prince College in Stockholm to teach Sinology.
Many of them were wanted or hunted down because they scolded the Beijing government for scolding their bald heads during the period in 1927, and chose to leave China to avoid the limelight and accumulate some vitality.
Among them was Guo Shangwu, who was supposed to be Lu Xun's good friend, the owner of Uchiyama Bookstore, and who left the sea to go to Chiba.
On the eve of April 12, Guo Shangwu scolded the bald head for perverse behavior and was wanted by the Chinese government.
On the second day after "April 12", he reported to No. 5 on the massacre of Qiujiang and Yuqing in Qihai, and persuaded the latter to leave Qihai as soon as possible.
In the later Shengchang Uprising, Guo Shangwu also actively participated, and on the way to the south of the rebel troops, he joined the party through the introduction of the fifth number.
The latter once wanted to arrange for Guo Shangwu's family to go to Sulian in order to save the vitality of G's life, but failed because Guo suddenly had a serious illness.
After that, with the consent of the fifth, Guo Shangwu was helped by Uchiyama Wanzao and left the sea to go to Ben.
During this period, his daily operations have been monitored by the police.
Now that there is a better option than Ben, then Guo Shangwu will certainly not miss it.
And there is another point, after he went to Stockholm, he did not just teach Sinology to foreigners.
These students who went to study at Prince's College from China are also the objects that Guo Shangwu needs to actively strive for.
When you go to France for work-study, you can set up a youth study group in Paris and Lyon, and you can set up a youth branch, and then you may be able to continue this path in Stockholm.
Moreover, Chen Muwu is in charge of the Prince's College, and for this person who has met several times in Paris in 1924, No. 5 is still relatively reassuring.
However, for the sake of safety, No. 5 still told Guo Shangwu that after arriving in Stockholm, it was best to contact Chen Muwu more to see his current attitude, especially what it was like after 1927, and whether there had been any changes compared with a few years ago.
If it's still like before, let's see if you can consider winning Chen Muwu to your side?
Of course, that's all for later, and we'll have to wait until Stockholm.
After leaving Shaojing, Shi Ruwei continued north, and his last destination was Mukden.
In 1927, in the face of the overwhelming Northern Expeditionary Army, the Feng warlords who controlled the Northeast and North China were in turmoil.
Moreover, they jumped over the wall in a hurry, and their hands were also stained with blood in the past year, and they laughed and laughed at fifty steps and a hundred steps with the southern government.
Shi Ruwei went to Fengtian, first, to find Professor He Yujie, who was serving as the head of the physics department at Northeastern University at this time.
This is the professor of physics at Shao University that Chen Muwu met when he was lecturing at Shaojing University in 1923.
Shaojing University is the first school in China to set up a physics department, and He Yujie is the first department head after the withdrawal of Shao University, so he can also be called the first head of the physics department in China.
After the end of his tenure as head of the department, He Yujie continued to stay at Shao University as a professor in the Department of Physics for several years, and it was during the period when Chen Muwu went to Shaojing University to give lectures, and the two became acquainted.
He Yujie complained of illness and resigned from teaching in the Department of Physics at Shaojing University in 1927 and returned to his hometown to recuperate.
Soon after, he was invited by his student Sun Guofeng, who went to Northeastern University to serve as the dean of the School of Science and Technology after graduating from Shao University, to continue to serve as the head of the department at Northeastern University.
He Yujie is equivalent to the plane tree planted by the Department of Physics of Northeastern University, and many people have turned to Northeastern University because of his teaching reputation.
In the office of the dean of the Department of Physics of Northeastern University, He Yujie warmly received the visiting Shi Ruwei.
He was a student at the Kyoto University in the late Qing Dynasty, and was later sent by the Qing government to study in the West in 1903 at public expense.
He arrived in Manchester in early 1904 to study physics at the Victoria University in Manchester.
In May 1907, Chen Muwu's teacher Rutherford left McGill University in Canada and returned to England to work as a professor of physics at Victoria University in Manchester, where he was in charge of the laboratory.
Ho Yuk-kit, who graduated in the same year, had the privilege of attending a lecture by Rutherford at the University of Manchester, becoming the first Chinese student to attend his lecture.
But because he left England after graduating in the summer, he didn't have much contact with Rutherford.
After welcoming Shi Ruwei into his office, He Yujie began to recall his past when he was studying in the UK 25 years ago.
As they spoke, they came to Rutherford.
He Yujie said to Shi Ruwei with envy: "We were the first batch of Chinese students to go to the UK, and we were a novelty in school, but at the same time, we were not very welcome. Everyone knew that Rutherford was a well-known physicist who discovered radioactivity, but if you wanted to greet him or ask questions, you couldn't get up to it. - The British students were very resistant to us.
"I didn't expect that after only 20 years, our Chinese students have also obtained doctoral diplomas from Cambridge University, the top university in the United Kingdom, and from the Cavendish laboratory supervised by Rutherford."
He Yujie's words were not only praising Shi Ruwei, but also praising Chen Muwu, because after all, both of them were doctors from Cavendish Laboratories.
Shi Ruwei also knew that He Yujie was probably not talking about himself, so he hurriedly followed and said politely: "If Dr. Chen hadn't brought me to the UK from China, even if I had 10,000 heads, I wouldn't have thought that I would go to Cambridge University to study." ”
He Yujie agrees with Shi Ruwei's statement: "Dr. Chen is truly a pillar of our country, and his appearance is a great blessing for the Chinese physics community.
"Dr. Chan has not only made great achievements in the field of physics, but has also achieved many enviable achievements in other fields.
"Our native professors and teachers have lamented to us more than once that there is a Dr. Chen in China, but it is a great blessing for the whole of China and the whole of Asia.
And the big gold advocate behind Northeastern University regards Dr. Chen as a good friend who is often on his lips.
Every time he came to the school to inspect his work, he always mentioned a few new things that Dr. Chen had made in Europe.
"If you look at the whole of Northeastern University, not only the emblem was designed by Dr. Chen, but as long as Dr. Chen makes some new discoveries in all walks of life, Northeastern University is definitely the first in China to set up a department to respond. We now have not only the departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry and mathematics, but also a special department of physical education to train students with excellent athletic skills.
"Everyone thinks that Dr. Chen's winning four gold medals in a row at the World Games is a face for the Chinese, especially Zhang Gongzi.
"In the entire physical education department of Northeastern University, in addition to running, the most famous event should be the swimming in which Dr. Chen won the gold medal.
The weather in the northeast is cold, and the outdoor water will freeze in winter, so Zhang Gongzi also specially allocated funds to build a standard indoor swimming pool on the school campus, and in order to prevent the temperature from being too low in winter, the pool is also specially designed to place a coal stove.
"Of course, Dr. Chen should be most grateful to the Department of Physics at Northeastern University.
Because physics is his main professional discipline, every time Zhang Gongzi comes to inspect the school, the physics department is a must-visit place for him.
"He's also allocating the most money to the physics department in the whole school, no, we're having a meeting right now to discuss something.
"Dr. Shi, it just so happens that you, a person who understands, are here today, and I would like to take this opportunity to ask a question. In your Cavendish lab, do you use this machine every day? I've seen a lot of recent papers signed by the Cavendish Lab that use this thing called a particle accelerator. Let's talk about Northeastern University, is it necessary to buy one? ”
Before Shi Ruwei returned to China, he was just in time for Cockcroft and Zhao Zhongyao to go to the United States and Europe respectively to install particle accelerators produced in the Cavendish laboratory for customers.
He knew that it seemed that he had sold a particle accelerator to Su Lian, but he didn't expect that Su Lian would play the role of an Arab merchant selling goods between Europe and China this time, so quickly, Su Lian would make a replica and plan to sell it to Northeastern University at a high price.
The reason why it is a high price is because Shi Ruwei asked He Yujie about the price offered by Su Lianren.
It can only be said that they are too open-minded, and if this deal is made, they will not only be able to recover the price they paid for the particle accelerator from Cavendish Labs, but also make a profit from it.
That is, Zhang Gongzi, who is eager to make some achievements at Northeastern University to prove his injustice, if it were someone else, he would definitely not be stupid enough to pay such a large sum of money.
Therefore, Shi Ruwei said to He Yujie that there was no need to spend money to buy imitations from the Sulian people.
And this thing is really not very useful for Northeastern University, which currently has the main goal of teaching and educating people.
The two chatted about professional-related issues from greetings, and Shi Ruwei also took the opportunity to say the purpose of his return to China this time, about the selection examination of the Prince Academy.
He Yujie has long heard about Chen Muwu's intention to run a school in Europe, and thinks this is a good thing.
He swore to Shi Ruwei that he would do his best to help, and said that he must make the students pay attention to this exam.
The book is no longer being updated this year.
See you next year.
Happy Chinese New Year!
