On September 2, 254 (1913), Jiangnan Shipyard, Shanghai.
At this moment, in the No. 8 dock of the Jiangnan Factory, a large group of technicians and workers are busy. But now they are not building new ships, but refurbishing several old ones.
The tonnage of these old ships is not large, they are all small warships of about five or six hundred tons, and none of the four ships occupy the dock. Stylistically, they are all old warships from decades ago, and there is even a wooden-hulled sailing ship among them. At this time, the renovation work was nearing completion, but this renovation did not change the original layout of several old ships, only replaced the original old parts and main engine, and even the wooden-hulled sailboat was replaced with a new wooden hull, not steel or anything.
Although these are all old ships, since they were sent to the Jiangnan factory, many elderly people have come from all over the country to watch. Now, too, dozens of old people stood next to the dock, all looking at the small old ships with excited eyes, and several of them were still wiping their tears.
Because these old ships are all ships of the former Beiyang Naval Division, the wooden-hulled sailing ship is the Caojiang, and the other few are Zhenxi, Zhennan and Zhenbian of the Zhendong-class gunboats, and these four old ships were all asked for back from Japan by Wen Desi. Those old people who came to watch were all former Beiyang sailors who had participated in the First Sino-Japanese War, and they were inevitably a little excited when they touched the scene.
Speaking of which, this Caojiang is also a product of the Jiangnan Factory, it is the first designed and supervised by the famous engineer Xu Shou and others in the late Qing Dynasty by the Shanghai Jiangnan Manufacturing Bureau, which started in February 186 and was completed in July 186, and is the first propeller ship manufactured by China itself. The ship is made of wooden hull and iron nail twisting process, with a displacement of o tons.
On July 2, 1894, the Sino-Japanese Battle of Toshima broke out, and the Caojiang ship and the troop carrier Gao Sheng, who performed the transport mission, unfortunately broke into the battlefield, and the Gao Sheng was sunk, and the Cao Jiang ship was chased by the Japanese ship Qiu Jinzhou at 1:06 p.m., and was forced to hang out the white flag and surrender, thus becoming the first warship of the Beiyang Fleet to be captured in the First Sino-Japanese War.
After being incorporated into the Japanese fleet, the Caojiang ship was listed as a garrison ship to carry out patrol and alert duties. After 186 years, the ship was changed to a second-class gunboat and doubled as a survey ship. Probably because of the resentment of the Beiyang Naval Division, on June 2, 19o3, the ship ran aground and sank while carrying out a survey mission in Nemuro Bay, and all the crew survived
The Japanese Navy felt that it was very unlucky, and in January of that year, the Caojiang ship was removed from the navy and transferred to the Ministry of Internal Affairs as a quarantine ship for the port of Kobe and Hyogo Prefecture. In the original plane, it was registered in 19 years as the sailing ship Caoe Maru, and it was not delisted until 196.
At that time, there were a total of six Zhendong-class gunboats of the Beiyang Naval Division, which were mosquito gunboats, and were built by the British Armstrong shipyard, with a displacement of 44o tons, and the wooden hull was covered with steel plates and no armor. All participated in the First Sino-Japanese War, and after the defeat of Beiyang, these ships, together with Zhenyuan, Jiyuan, Pingyuan and other ships, surrendered to the Japanese army in Weihaiwei, and all of them became prisoners of the Japanese army. After March 1895, these former Beiyang ships were incorporated into the Japanese Combined Fleet.
The six Zhendong-class ships were reclassified as second-class gunboats in March 186, and in August 19o3 the six ships were delisted together as miscellaneous ships, and were resold or dismantled after 19uu6. So far, only the west of the town, the south of the town and the edge of the town have not been demolished.
As for the other captured warships of the Beiyang Naval Division, they are no longer there. For example, Jiyuan and Pingyuan were struck and sunk by mine in the Russo-Japanese War, and ships such as Zhenyuan and Guangbing were also sunk or scrapped and dismantled in accidents.
After Japan's defeat in this war, the Chinese Government demanded the return of the captured Beiyang warships, demanding that all Japanese ships that were still alive must be returned, and that the wreckage of the ships that were no longer alive must also be exchanged. The British also pretended not to know about this matter, and even put pressure on Japan to meet China's demands. The boss didn't support it, and the crippled Japan naturally didn't dare to blow up the stab, although they also felt very embarrassed, but they had to return it honestly.
After the signing of the Sino-Japanese Shanghai contract, Japan searched the country, collected the original Beiyang warships and wreckage that they had captured and now scattered among the people, and handed them over to China in June.
Of course, China is not asking for these ships for its own use, after all, they are all decades old, and the navy will not want them. This is a matter of face, and it must not be missing. Before the crossing, Wen Deji was very resentful of this matter. Now there is a chance, of course, you have to take it all back.
After the refurbishment, these ships will be sent to the newly built Weihaiwei Naval History Museum together with the relics of Dingyuan and Zhenyuan as a witness to history.
The dead cannot be traced, the old history is gone, and the new history is still advancing.
At the same time as the refurbishment of the old Beiyang ship, a large warship is being started in the newly built No. 18 dock of Shanghai Jiangnan Factory, and the No. 18 dock located on Changxing Island is a 60,000-ton dock, which is also the largest dock in the world, and the supporting shipbuilding equipment is also the most advanced.
At this time, the keel was being laid in the dock, and an experienced person could estimate the approximate tonnage of the ship from the size of the keel. However, Wen Desi obviously didn't have this ability, so he asked Liang Ji, the chief engineer next to him, very directly.
"How old is she?"
Chief Engineer Liang Ji replied: "Mr. Wen, her standard displacement is 45,000 tons, and the main gun is three quadruple 3o mm 45 times diameter naval guns......"
Wen Deji continued to ask: "Her main gun is full front, what are the benefits of this?"
Liang Jimei said with a fluttering eyebrow: "Compared with the traditional dreadnought main gun layout, this main gun front layout has many advantages, first of all, the length of the armor box is greatly shortened, and the thickness of the armor is increased, so that under the condition of using the same main gun, the displacement can be greatly reduced, and the defense power can be increased." At the same time, the position of the main gun is more concentrated, which can also be more convenient for fire control management and improve the hit rate. At the same time, her main engine compartment is rear, and the more fragile drivetrain can also be made more compact to increase defense. And without the main guns on her rear deck, the usable area has risen considerably, and more seaplanes can be deployed, reconnaissance capabilities can be increased, and more anti-aircraft weapons can be deployed......"
Wen Deji raised his eyebrows and continued, "What about the disadvantages, and what are the disadvantages compared to the traditional layout?"
"Uh, this is a shortcoming...... Liang Ji paused and said: "Because her main guns are all in front, in this way, her rear hemisphere is a blind spot for firepower." If she is pursued by a large enemy warship, she will have no power to fight back, and can only flee or turn around to meet the enemy...... However, she is not an assault ship, but the main force of the battle line of an offensive nature, and does not need to face the enemy with its tail, so such a disadvantage is not a big deal. ”
Deputy Chief Engineer Wang Tengpeng also said beside him: "Mr. Wen, although she can't use the main gun when retreating, she can wield 1oo firepower when attacking, and the navy is an offensive branch." ”
"You're right, the navy is indeed an offensive branch...... "Wen Deji nodded in agreement.
At this time, Liang Ji took out a rendering of the finished project and introduced: "You see, her front and middle deck is a slope, and the three main guns are arranged in turn, so that there is no need to raise the base of the second and third turrets to obtain a forward firing range. There is also no need to waste forward fire from turrets No. 3 like the pyramid layout. Our sloped layout lowers the center of gravity and makes the structure around the turret stronger. The three main guns all have a circumferential firing angle of 2o degrees, and within the first hemisphere o degree, they can swing 1oo firepower, so if you don't consider the retreat state, it is not a disadvantage compared to the traditional layout, and even has a slight advantage. For example, our Fuxi class only has an O degree of full firepower. ”
"Okay, let's build two of them first, see how they work, and then if they work, let's continue to build battleships with this layout...", Wen Deji finally said.
Since 1911, China has begun to build two battleships and two heavy cruisers every year, and the outfitting of the battleships "Houyi" and "Chiyou", which began in April 1911, and the heavy cruisers "Yandang" and "Tianshan", have been completed and are currently in the stage of sea trials. The progress of the Yandang and Tianshan is faster, and they will be ready for service in about next month, while the Houyi and Chiyou are expected to be in service by February at the latest.
The dreadnoughts of Yuan] and Shennong, and the heavy cruisers Qixia and Daxingan, which started construction in February 192, have been launched and are currently in the outfitting stage.
Construction began in October of this year on three battleships (Dayu, Kuafu, Suleiman the Magnificent) and two heavy cruisers (Huangshan and Lushan), of which the battleship Suleiman the Magnificent was built for the Ottoman Empire.
Although these warships still follow the hulls of the Fuxi-class and Qingcheng-class, each batch has been improved in details. For example, from the 1911 batch, the welding process was fully used to replace the traditional riveting process. In addition, the performance of the warship's armor steel, power system, electronic system and other subsystems has been greatly improved, and details such as cabin layout and underwater lightning protection structure have also been gradually improved.
The biggest change is the Qingcheng class, starting from [Yandang] and [Tianshan], the main gun has been replaced from four triple O mm main guns to four twin 2O mm main guns, and the power of the main engine has been increased, and the actual maximum flight has been increased to 3. 6 knots (originally 2.) 7 knots), and in the recent sea trials, they even ran to a height of 3 knots.
The Qingcheng-class changed the main gun because in the actual test, the O mm gun is a relatively embarrassing caliber, the power is too small for the battleship, and the power is too much for the cruiser, and the firing is not too advantageous compared to the 2O mm gun.
However, with such an upgrade, it can hardly be considered a heavy cruiser, plus her 3. 6 knots, by European standards, this is a proper battlecruiser. However, there is no battle cruiser class in the Chinese Navy, so it is better to call her a heavy cruiser, of course. It would be fun if someone really thought she was a heavy cruiser.
In September last year, the navy proposed to the central authorities that after being stimulated by the Fuxi-class, all countries are now launching battleships equipped with 14-inch guns, 15-inch guns, or even larger guns, at least in terms of the caliber of the main guns, the Fuxi-class no longer has an advantage. So they demanded the construction of more powerful battleships.
It just so happened that the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense also reported that the development of a 3o-mm gun was close to success. So Wen Desi approved this plan, and after more than half a year of preparatory work, the preliminary design of the new class of battleships was basically completed before the Sino-Japanese war. However, after the Sino-Japanese East China Sea War, the navy, which had actual combat experience, put forward new requirements and construction requirements, and at the same time, the battleship information of other powers was also continuously summarized, so the design department further revised the original design of the new warship.
At this time, the smell of gunpowder in Europe was getting stronger and stronger, and in order to meet this great opportunity, he ordered the construction of the new battleship to be advanced from March next year to September this year. In other words, the current new battleship has not yet been officially finalized, but the main body and most of the design have been completed, and some of the details have not been completed, and now they are being designed while construction.
In addition to new battleships, aircraft carriers are also being mass-produced. Construction of two Xia-class aircraft carriers, designed by the Guangzhou Shipyard Design Institute, has also started this year, and this Xia-class class is an improvement on the kind of aircraft carrier designed by Ottoman. There are also Changbai-class heavy cruisers equipped with four triple 21o-mm guns and a displacement of - 10,000 tons, which will also start construction next month. This is a real heavy cruiser, different from the "pocket battleship" of the Qingcheng class.
In addition, the construction of two new types of submarines is also on the agenda, an enlarged version of the Type 32 "Sea Seal class" with a displacement of 186 tons, and a large submarine for transportation and supply, the Type 66 "Manatee-class" transport submarine with a displacement of 34 tons. This type of submarine was of great concern to Bunde-hei, and he decided to use it in large quantities in the future when transporting humanitarian relief supplies to the oppressed people of the various imperialist colonies.
The equipment of the 6th Army and the Air Force was not idle, in addition to giving the first team a more detailed generation, it also opened some export-oriented equipment. For example, Chengfei, on the basis of the J-2, launched a fighter dedicated to export, and is now stockpiling, and when European countries open flattening, they can count the money.
Now China's military industry is not only holding back its strength to explode production capacity, but all kinds of industry and agriculture are also desperately exploding production, and everyone is holding back their strength to make a good profit on the feast of World War I.
Now China is ready for this Western feast. China has now tied its napkins, put away its plates, prepared its seasonings, held its knives and forks high, and waited for the European war to explode and the feast to be served.
