Chapter 6
Ben rummaged through one of the plastic bags and threw something at the foot of the bed. I reached for it and looked, oh, it was a dark gray garment.
"I know how bad that robe feels," he said.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a metal ring attached to the carbine. My lips grew into a smile as I watched him search for the key on the ring.
"One of them is for the shower room,"
"You have the key?" I asked.
I move on the bed so that I sit on my lap. I was slightly excited as I clutched my clothes. A smile twinked at the corner of Ben's lips.
"Don't get too excited," he said. "They only gave me the key to the door in the lab."
"How do you know?" I asked. "We should try them."
"They're crazy, but they're not fools."
I exhaled deeply. He may be right. Philip had a lot of trust in him. She told him to go to the store and here on his own. She probably won't let the key to the basement door be with the girl. Hah, then she'll be fighting again.
"Let's go find the bathroom," he said.
"So what do I do?
"I lifted my arm that was attached to the IV rod. Ben walked over to the pump and pressed a few buttons to disconnect me from the tube.
"How can you do so much?" I asked. "You pick up something," he said. "I'll pick you up after you're done showering."
I put my clothes on one hand. Ben was holding a plastic bag. He watched me stagger and take the first few steps, and he should have been ready to catch me as I tumbled. He walked down the hallway with me when I managed to go straight. It felt weird to walk without an IV pole to lean on, so I kept my hands against the wall. Nausea, reminds me of many past Sunday morning hangovers.
I watched Ben fumble for some keys and unlocked the shower room. He beckoned me in and placed the plastic bag on the counter. I looked down at the cold white tiles on the floor, where the wall separated the three separate showers. A blue shower curtain was drawn between them.
The white was so clean that I could almost see my reflection staring at me.
This room has never been used before. I was the first, but how many people was he preparing for?
"A girl is going to need that." Ben's voice brought me back to reality. He's looking into the plastic bag.
"There's a good chance I've forgotten something. My sister always had garbage in the bathroom, which should smell like oranges. "
"Thank you," I said.
"I'll wait for you outside after you've washed up," he said.
I nodded. I looked at the bag and pulled things out one by one. There is shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and other toiletries inside. I laughed when I saw that they all had a citrus scent. There are also razors, shaving cream, brushes, headbands, and deodorant. I was relieved to see a box of tampons. I was supposed to have my period next week. It's a conversation I don't want to have with Winnie.
I bit my lower lip and my heart sank. Why am I still here next week? By next week, I'll be running away.
I opened the lymphatic curtain and saw the white tiles on the wall bent into shelves and placed shampoo and facial cleanser on top. I turned on the shower and waited for the water to warm up. I peeled off my robe, folded it, and put it on the counter.
I stepped into the shower and let the warm water wash over my skin. I was immersed in the smell of citrus because it was in the smell of citrus, and it overpowered the smell of sweat and blood that had been following me. The fire behind my eyes grew louder and louder, but the pain in my skull grew duller. I shaved the hair off my leg as I struggled to see clearly, and my leg was scratched a few times.
When I was done, I wrapped myself in a towel and walked into the hallway.
Ben sat in Pooh's chair with his feet on the table. Opened a book. When he heard me come in, he closed the book and turned around.
"Are you feeling better?" He asked.
"As good as I can feel," I said. "Considering the situation."
"You're very strong," Ben said with a smile. "I like it, but in the doctor's body, you don't want to show too much of it, ha."
I sat down on the edge of the bed with my feet dangling. Finally relaxed!
Ben stood up, walked around the bed, and pushed the IV syringe in front of me. He reattached it. He sat down in Pooh's chair and leaned back. His face was blurry and I was still not used to the strange shades of color that surrounded me.
"I'm not going to that dinner," I told him.
"You don't really have a choice," he said. "They live for this dinner. They even made it a whole weekend. They love to show off their masterpieces. ”
"So I have to sit still for a bunch of Frankenstein?"
"Frankenstein-esque doctors?"
"Yes, the doctors who put a lot of people together to make something new. It's like in the novel. ”
"I know this novel very well."
I couldn't see the details of Ben's face, but from his tone, I could tell he was snickering.
"Listen, I don't need to know how to perform for this party. I need to know how to get out of here," I said.
"I've told you I've tried it many times," he said. "They're smart, and they're punishing. That's probably what we have to do in the meantime. Until we find the perfect way out. ”
"Compared to the free trade zone, won the Harendt?" "It's been three years and you still haven't found a perfect way out?"
There was a squeak. He swayed his weight in his chair. I must have made him uncomfortable.
"I'm trying to help you," he said. "Try to run away and you'll understand what I'm talking about."
"You're trying to scare me."
"It's not hard to do. Take this situation into account. ”
I bit my lip. He was taunting me.
"Give me the key," I said. Ben said with a smile. I held on to the rod and walked over to Ben. I towered in front of him. His features came into my sight, and he raised an eyebrow. I squinted and saw the key ring through the rim of his jeans. I reached down and he grabbed my wrist. His grip was much stronger than Winnie's, but when I pulled my arm back, he let go.
"Give me the key," I repeated.
"Diana, I've told you I'm on your side," he said.
"You're a perverted TMD," I said. "You want to be here."
I rushed forward. My fingers had bypassed the key before Ben's warm fingers wrapped around my wrists. Before he grabbed that wrist, I patted him on the face with my free hand. I pulled his hand away and he pulled me back. I stumbled a little as I fell towards him. He tugged at my wrist again and pulled me into his lap. The key dug into the back of my thigh. I reached for the keys again, but he clasped my wrists to his chest. I took a sharp breath as he stared at me with crystal blue eyes.
"Don't call me an idiot," he said. "I wanted to get out of here, and I tried. I've already told you that the keys don't get us out of the basement. ”
"How do you know?" My voice was much weaker than I would have liked.
"I know them," he said. "When they love each other on it. It would be the ideal time for us to run out and get out of here, but she's not going to give us that chance. ”
"And what about earlier today?" I asked. "You go to the store alone and buy these things for me. Why don't you go to the police? Why don't you ask for help? ”
"It's not just about getting out of here."
Ben shook his head, and I realized I was still on his lap. I quickly stood up.
I wiped the moisture off the mirror and took a closer look. The swelling has decreased, but there are still faint yellow bruises running down my cheeks. I combed my hair with a brush and braided my wet hair. I put on the underwear and skirt Ben gave me. I took a deep breath before picking it up and standing up, but his fingers dug into my thigh. My breath was stuck in my throat. Ben's eyes locked on me. He seemed to be checking my large vertical pupils and the new dark green.
"What do you think will happen when you get out of here?"
He asked. "You can't just go home, have these eyes, and live a normal life."
"Can someone change us back to what we were?" I say.
"Is it a doctor or a veterinarian?"
I pushed his hand away from my lap and I stood up.
"Ben. I don't understand you," I said. "You first said we had to wait for the perfect chance to escape, and now you're telling me there's no point in leaving here? Which one exactly? How can your opinion change in five minutes? ”
"I don't want to stay here," he said, getting up from his chair. ”
But getting out of here isn't as easy as you might think. They are sustaining our lives. Without their medication, my skin would have fallen off and your eyes would have been rejected by your body. Their medications stop our body's rejection of these transplants. ”
I pushed my fingertips into the tender flesh around my eyes. I never thought about my hormones, never thought that my body would reject them, and that it would turn against me on its own. I had to rely on Winnie? Does He continue to be able to play God in my life?
"That's why leaving isn't as simple as you might think," he said.
There was a click when the lock on the door turned. I took a step back from Ben. I watched as Winnie's figure appeared in focus. He had two bowls in his hands. He smiled when he looked in my direction.
"You look good," he said. He handed Ben one of the bowls. "I hope she didn't give you too much trouble, Ben." Two bowls in his hands. He smiled when he looked in my direction.
"You look good," he said. He handed Ben one of the bowls. "I hope she didn't give you too much trouble, Ben."
"Not at all, sir," he said with a smirk. "She's lovely."
"I'm going to take Diana to see her new room and make sure she eats."
"Yes, sir."
Winnie walked up to me, trying to avoid the gaze of the man who was in charge of my life.
