Chapter 8 (I)

Lan Xiaomei is different from them. She's a foreigner.

Or to be precise, she is a mixed race, her father Chris is from Texas, USA, and her mother's name is Lan Yilian, who is from the Jiangnan region of China. Eleven-year-old Lan Xiaomei was born in the United States, came to S City with her parents a year ago, and is currently in the fifth grade at her father's school.

She was the same age as Justin, but in different classes.

Before the age of ten, Lan Xiaomei lived on her grandfather's farm in Texas.

As a cowboy offspring, she began learning to ride and herd cattle from her father at the age of three, and at the age of five she was able to ride a pony on her own on the Texas prairie.

Her grandfather was an authentic cowboy with a tough personality who never gave in and was deeply respected and loved by the locals.

Unfortunately, on the day he turned eighty, he had to surrender a frightened wild horse, fell from his back on the hard yellow earth, broke his spine, and never got back again.

Her father was also a cowboy.

When he was 17 years old, he won the Dallas Bull Riding Championship, and the walls of his home still hang pictures of him holding a golden trophy in his arms and smiling and showing his white teeth.

However, at the age of eighteen, he suddenly became extremely tired of the ranch.

At that time, he insisted on leaving his hometown and going to a big city like New York to study at a university and see the bustling world.

Ten years later, when he returned to the historic ranch with his tired body and shabby bags, he had an extra girl by his side.

Chinese girl.

She was his history classmate at New York University.

According to his later recollection, the two did not communicate much during their school days, and they did not leave a deep impression on each other.

But on a rainy day a few years after graduation, the two unexpectedly met at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

At that time, they were looking at a three-color Arhat statue of Yixian in the Tang Dynasty at the same time, and because they were too focused, their shoulders accidentally bumped together, and then, the two happily recognized each other.

A few months later, they were married in the presence of a pastor, and then rented a Cadillac convertible from 1987 and embarked on a road trip around the United States.

From the east coast all the way north, to Montreal, then west, through Cleveland, Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City, and finally into the beautiful state of California.

In Los Angeles, they are surrounded by the wonderful sea breeze and abundant sunshine every day, and they lose the motivation to keep going.

They rented an apartment by the sea, and lived there, living in seclusion, reading and writing, and thinking about the meaning of life.

Until one morning, Cowboy Chris, who woke up from his sleep, heard his wife's morning vomit from the bathroom.

For the sake of the soon-to-be-born child, for the sake of this beloved Chinese wife, it's time to go home.

So, at dusk, they greeted the setting sun and drove into the big pasture that had been separated for ten years. The father and mother were naturally very happy about the return of their son, especially with a kind and innocent daughter-in-law and the child in her womb.

They arranged a beautiful wedding room and took care of it wholeheartedly, and the family lived a happy and happy life.

Half a year later, the child came. It's a girl. They named her BlueBonnet, which translates to Blue Hat Flower in Chinese, the state flower of Texas.

It is said that the blue hat flower is a messenger sent by heaven to the earth.

In addition, the child's mother proposed to give her another Chinese name, with her surname Lan, called Xiaomei.

There is no opinion on this.

Since Xiaomei was born, her family has raised her as a cowboy, especially Chris, who loves this fair-skinned daughter with little black curly hair too much. He took her with him every day, took her on horseback and cattle herding, took her hunting, and taught her various wilderness survival skills.

Therefore, Xiaomei has wanted to be a cowgirl like her father since she was a child.

Her biggest dream is to compete in the annual Dallas Bull Riding Championship, just like her dad did when he was younger, and beat everyone to win the championship.

She imagined herself in jeans and leather boots, a cowboy hat on her head, a shirt tucked into her pants, her legs clamped between her belly, her hat in one hand, the reins in the other, and then, after the starting gun sounded, she rushed out of the fence, to the cheers of the onlookers, on the back of the bison jumping back and forth, and finally defeated the big bull and received the cheers of the crowd on the podium.

By the time she was eight years old, she was a little warrior.

Although she is small, small and thin, she is extremely agile, can easily get on a horse, climb trees with her bare hands, and can also set all kinds of traps to catch prey. Chris never worries about her – cowboys have always allowed their kids to grow wild outdoors and temper themselves in nature.

When she was nine years old, her grandfather died, and she was present at the time of the accident, and the grand and solemn burial ceremony that followed gave her her first glimpse of the whole process of death.

One day when she was ten years old, she and her father came back on horseback, and from afar they saw her mother standing in the doorway, looking at her husband and daughter with a sad face.

She told them that her mother was out of shape, had been diagnosed with cancer, and that she needed to go back immediately. In her hometown, although she has a younger brother who is more than ten years younger than herself, she is the eldest sister, and when she encounters this kind of thing, she must go back, otherwise she will be infamous for being unfilial.

She hopes Chris will understand the plight of a Chinese woman.

Chris expressed understanding.

Not only did he understand, but he also fully supported her to go back to take care of her parents.

A week later, they packed their bags and boarded an international flight to Shanghai.
