Volume I: Chapter 31: An Amazing Discovery
"Anya!?" Cesare thought that Anya was still in the room, and quickly chased after him, but the thing crawled so fast that it was not at all comparable to two meat legs, and when Cesare ran out of the cellar, the guy had already slammed open the door.
Cesare threw the axe but was a step slower, the blade of the axe digging into the door but not stopping the monster's pace, as if hearing the creature's throat muttering "hunger" and "meat" as it slipped into the room.
I just felt that it was too late, so I quickly pulled out the axe, and rushed into the room where I had just rested with Anya as fast as I could, and saw that the monster covered by pitch-black mycelium was already entrenched next to Anya's bed.
An ugly head with human hair and facial features cracked open mouth, and the scorched fangs inside were full of bloodshots, and it was about to bite off the back of the girl's white neck.
"Anya! Be careful! Cesare rushed forward with an axe, but the monster hunted faster, and the sound of flesh stimulated the creature's desire to eat.
Just before it was too late, Anya rolled over, and the girl's curious eyes met the monster's terrifying eyes up close.
Then, a sharp blade suddenly pulled out of the straw on the bed, and stabbed neatly into the monster's exposed palate, instantly stabbing from the heavenly spirit.
Then the monster leaned back and wailed, and Anya drew her sword, and the monster covered her injured head with her forelimbs, its slender torso swaying painfully through the room.
And Anya turned over and got out of bed, and at the same time, she unhurriedly shook off the black blood and mycelium on the sword. "I'm sorry, but today you're the second gentleman to be so rude to me."
Anya said with a little temper, and then she smiled again when she saw Cesare, who was in a cold sweat with fright. "Where did you just go, is this a friend you just met? He's a little ...... High? It doesn't seem to be my favorite type. β
"Less! Hurry up and leave without your luggage! Cesare shouted anxiously, they didn't have many belongings with them, and quickly grabbed Anya's backpack and oil lamp, Cesare grabbed Anya by the sleeve and ran out of the house with her.
It's almost sunset time, and although Cesare doesn't know what the night vision of these monsters is, they don't have to gamble, and they just want to get out of this broken town as soon as possible.
"Uh......" Anya ran as she was dragged by Cesare, and touched Cesare's shoulder with her free hand. That friend of yours seems to have followed. β
Cesare looked back to see a house behind him smashed out of the ashes, and the human-headed lizard showed an angry face in the smoke.
It crawled back and forth between the walls, leaping from one eaves to the other, getting closer and closer to Cesare and Anja, presumably the dinner was about to be eaten.
Surveying their surroundings, Cesare noticed that they had run back to the square in the center of town. "No, I can't run!" That thing will only climb faster and faster in densely built places, but this relatively empty square may still have a chance to fight for its life.
As the human-headed lizard got closer and closer, it was almost impossible to hear its sticky footsteps crawling on the walls, and the sound of greedy and evil sneering.
However, just as Cesare and Anya were ready to fight with each other, the guy who was about to rush into the square slammed down into the street, shuttling back and forth around the square so fast that he could only see a dark shadow revolving around the buildings around the square, and it was difficult for the naked eye to grasp which direction it was hiding in now.
Cesare and Anya were back-to-back, not knowing which direction the human-headed lizard would come from. At the tense moment, Anya seemed to think of something funny, smiled inappropriately, and said to Cesare behind her. "Do you remember that slender bed, maybe it's the old woman's son?"
"Do you still have the heart to think about this now?" Cesare was unbelievable.
"Yes, while you were looking out the window in a daze, I secretly took a look at the room and found that the walls of the room were not just painted with tree paint, as if to hide some scratches and bloodstains."
Anya smiled and spun the sword in her hand. "Is it possible that the gentleman is the son of the old woman, and the reason the old woman took us in was to prepare dinner for her precious son?"
Cesare listened to Anya's scouting conjectures, whether true or not, no longer mattered at the moment.
The human-headed lizard obviously has a memory because of Anya's sword, if he is really the son of an old woman, he who loves hunting will be bitten by his prey, and he will definitely feel uncomfortable, and he is afraid that he is now trying to solve the two of us in one go.
Thinking about it, a familiar figure flew in front of him, and the red-eyed raven landed at Cesare's feet, and after a few glances with Cesare, it flew up again, and this time landed on Anya's shoulder.
"Hello little one, what's the matter?" Anya looked at the strange bird as Cesare had imagined, and liked it very much, and the raven was also chirping in Anya's ear, as if she was seriously saying something.
Listening to the crow of the raven, Anya nodded abruptly and left behind Cesare, who had jumped onto the dry stone fountain before Cesare could figure out the situation, and stood on the highest point of the entire square on the crumbling stone statue.
"What are you doing!" Cesare wondered, is it not necessary to die in vain if he is still mad at this time.
This time, Anya did not give Cesare an answer, but let the raven fly into the air, listening carefully to the bird's chirping with a serious expression.
"Right!" Anya's eyes flickered, and as she twisted her upper body, the human-headed lizard was poking its head out of the edge of the square on her right, bending its limbs and grasping the ground violently, and then leaping up at a very fast speed, roaring and pounced on Anya at a distance of dozens of meters as if it was flying in the sky.
At this moment, Anya pulled out a shiny object from the package she was carrying, and aimed a crossbow with an arrow already set up at the rushing monster, and the human-headed lizard's eyes widened in surprise at the sight of something familiar.
And because of this, Anya aimed and pulled the trigger with one eye, and the taut bowstring burst out the arrows, and a cool breeze pierced through the monster's left eye and out of the back of the head.
The unbalanced human-headed lizard writhed its slender body frantically in mid-air, falling freely towards the central fountain, its massive body soon obscuring the top of Anya's head, and darkness enveloped the girl.
"Uh... That's bad. The confident smile on Anya's face disappeared in an instant, and her flushed face turned pale with shock. About to be smashed into a meatloaf by a monster but too late to dodge, Anya's waist is tightly hugged by a sudden sense of security.
Cesare seized the last moment, rushed to Anya and jumped up with the fountain, holding the girl in his arms, and falling down the fountain in time the next moment when the monster fell, and the two of them rolled around the dusty ground a few times before finally stopping, choking on their mouths full of sand and coughing.
The already dilapidated fountain was smashed in pieces by the monster's body, but the edge of the stone carving collapsed into the monster's body, nailing the human-headed lizard to the fountain, and its body was almost split in half in the impact, exposing a large section of the vertebrae.
Wailing, followed by a human-like cry, the monster was completely devoid of its arrogance, and cried in pain, not knowing whose sympathy it was trying to gain.
Cesare stood up in pain, and then lifted Anya, whose head was still dizzy. He saw that the mycelium on the monster's body was healing those horrible wounds, a healing power he had seen once before, and he wouldn't make a second mistake.
Cesare turned his axe in front of the human-headed lizard, and as if he had thought of something when he saw its almost broken body, Cesare took advantage of its immobility, slashed its torso with one hand with the axe, and grasped the exposed spine with the other, and with both hands worked together, peeling the misshapen bone from the mycelium in life.
Looking at the bone wand in his hand, the size and length seem to be very similar to the guide wand...... I just don't know if it will work. Cesare poked the end of his long bone to the ground, and for a moment his whole body sensed a different flow of magic, so conspicuous and yet ...... Evil.
The parts that touched the ground began to melt into black water, and countless mycelium spread up the base of the long bones, gradually trying to crawl towards Cesare's arm.
Sensing that the situation was not good, Cesare quickly lifted the bone staff, thinking that it would be better to study it again just in case. The bones were put away, and the axe in his other hand glowed, and if the drunken priest IstvΓ‘n hadn't lied, he should have been able to destroy the monster's heart by cutting them off.
As soon as he raised his axe, the old woman's cry came from a distance, and the old man, taking advantage of Cesare's pre-action, hurriedly ran over and pushed Cesare backwards.
"Fuck off! Stay away from my son! She cried loudly, holding the melted mycelium in her hand and throwing it back into the monster's body. My son is not dead, you see that he is not good! You brutes, just like the crows! It's all brutes! My son is not dead! β
Looking at the scene in front of her, Anya covered her head and swayed to Cesare's side. "My head hurts... It's like I've hit a rock, I'm definitely going to write down today's experience in my diary, can you help me write down the date? Anya shook her head and looked at the painful old woman holding the monster. So what now? β
Cesare was silent, as if waiting for something.
The monster struggled to move its muscles that had just been recovered by the mycelium, and there was no bone to support it, and its shriveled skin was forcibly writhed by the mycelium, and it used its short arms to try to hold its mother-in-law, who was embracing it.
"Mommy......" The hoarse and unpleasant voice came from the throat of the human-headed lizard with difficulty, with a painful and desolate sound.
"Mom, son, mom! As long as you don't die, Mom will give you everything! The old woman wept, caressing the face that had been covered in mycelium and had no human appearance with her wrinkled hand.
"Mom...... I'm hungry......"
At dusk, the sun ruthlessly took away the last light of the town, and only the long cry of the raven accompanied by the old woman's scream was heard far, far away, until the sound of a sharp axe falling, and everything finally fell silent. Only the raven crows crow, never to be resurrected.
