Chapter 45: Heroes and Villains
It's been a while since Ryan has teamed up with his Plymouth Fury.
He often transports one or two people, especially when he is drunk or as a getaway driver, but rarely transports a group of people like this. Jamie wears his power armor in the back, while Ki Jeong wears a green sweatshirt. Her rats occupy every corner of the car, hiding behind and under the seats.
Unfortunately, Lanka has been complaining on the front lines. "You cheated, you big mouth," she accused Ryan. She would have ridden her bike to the meeting if it weren't for Jamie's insistence that they ride in the same car for team building. "I know."
"There's people here who can't afford to lose," Ryan replied, a few hundred dollars extra on the table yesterday. At the same time, the long-tongued? He has a better nickname! It's like "Granny Destruction".
"I count the cards," Lanka said. "But you changed them. I can't be wrong about that. β
"So you admit that you cheated on yourself and thus accuse him of cheating?" Jamie asked unsympathetically.
"Of course I cheated," Ryan admits publicly, much to the surprise of Jamie and Kizheng. "Instead of condemning me, you should learn from it, my young apprentice. Failure is an experience. β
"Then you must be very experienced now," Lanka shrugged. Obviously, she can give as much as she gets.
"There is nothing more human than deception. Do you know who else accuses humans of cheating? Mammoths. They said, 'Hey, these humans they attack us with bows and spears instead of ivory, and that's not fair.' Ryan looked at the man who couldn't afford to lose. Have you seen a mammoth lately, Lanka?"
Jamie sighed at their argument. "Next time we'll try a tabletop game."
The group parked their car near Little Maghreb, next to a fortress of stone and steel. The building was a foundry before the war until the Vulcan occupied it a few years ago. To Ryan, though, the crimson castle, made up of metal walls, pipes and reservoirs, is more like an old military base; Many soldiers patrol the area, wielding shotguns, grenade launchers and mini-guns. He also noticed several snipers on the roof, monitoring every corner of the street around the foundry.
Obviously, it was an open secret that Vulcan's weapons department operated there, but no one was stupid enough to attack them. Not even private security and millionaires. New Rome did live in the Cold War era.
It is also very close to the hotel that was previously recycled in Ryan. No wonder the Vulcans attacked her when she moved so close to their headquarters.
"Also, I want to say I'm disappointed in you, ladies," Ryan said to Lanka and Ki-jeong. "Only Zambator and I have costumes!" You don't even wear a mask!"
"Private security has our files, why are we wearing masks?" Ki-jeong asks confusedly, leaving her rat in the car to watch it. "They even know where we live."
"And there is not so much advanced armor," Lanka replied, despite her common sense, supplementing her equipment with a belt holster. "What kind of costume, cloak?" Do you know how hard it is not to trip over it?"
"It's not about being practical, it's about looking stylish," Ryan replied, putting his hand on his trench coat, "what are we without a bright and colorful style?" Simple animals! Culture is elevationβ"
"Aha, bad guy!"
Ryan paused, looking at a strange newcomer.
A man climbed off the bike next to the car and dressed like a Rambo...... In addition to the absence of guns, there are half muscles. He painted his face white, dyed his hair white, and had black spots on his eyes.
To be honest, it looks ridiculous.
The others seemed to recognize him, but instead of attacking him, they looked embarrassed.
"You've gone too far, but you've found the one you swore to destroy! The fool shouted, desperately trying to look like a badass, but he was so close to it. "Be prepared to face the ...... of anger"
"Oh God, don't do that again," Lanka sighed, and the others were surprisingly silent.
"Panda!"
"What?" Ryan asked, unsure whether to condemn the man for his poor fashion taste or praise his efforts. At least there are people in the city who understand the importance of clothing!" Do you have a chance to do it once every 10 years?"
"Pandas are picky! The ridiculous man replied, but his tone made Ryan a little skeptical. He doesn't look like a Chinese at all!
"He's a 'vigilante.'" Somehow, Lanka said the word ridiculously, rolling his eyes as he spoke. Obviously, she didn't take him seriously. "He can turn into a panda."
ββ¦ And?" Ryan asked, expecting something else.
"That's it."
"But a very big panda," Ki added with a smile, as if to soften the blow.
God, some genomes just aren't lucky.
"Did the fear of pandas scare you, badass?" The actor puts his hands on his waist, mistaking this awkward silence for fear.
Did he really come all the way to find trouble? Ryan should respect that, even though he should have made a good introduction.
"Ignore him, he'll go." Jamie replied. He walked towards the armory, not even looking at the poor would-be hero. Ki-jeong followed, though she gave the poor animal a pitiful look. Even the guards at the foundry seemed to be making fun of the newcomer and did nothing to stop him.
"You can't escape!"
Due to a lack of respect, pandas have undergone a terrible transformation. Black and white hairs grew on his skin, and his body grew stronger and more muscular. He grew claws and fangs, took off his pants and coat, like a gorgeous butterfly. The man was gone, leaving only ...... Panda.
But it's a pretty big panda, even bigger than a polar bear. However, when he lets out a scream, Ryan finds it cute, not scary.
Lanka sighed heavily, and his index and middle fingers folded together into a "gun", with which he fired an orange ball of energy. The projectile flew at the panda at the speed of an arrow, hitting him in the nose. The poor animal immediately fell to the left and was paralyzed.
Ryan now understands why they call her "The Sphere."
"Alright," Ranka said, pulling a handful of Beretta 76 from his pocket. "His body is mine."
"You're going to kill a panda?" Ryan asked in horror. "They are extinct!"
"Yes, that means we can sell his fur to collectors." She pointed her gun at the poor beast.
"I'm going to stop you, Kouira!" Ryan was in the way of the barrel and couldn't stand the cruelty of animals. "I'm not going to let you kill the last panda. You're going to be sentenced to death for that!"
"He's not a panda, big mouth, he's an idiot!" It's like you're dead, except you've lost your mind while you're alive!"
"I can't let you anger PETA!" You don't know what those guys can do!" Or what they could do before the war.
"Who is PETA? Genome?" She asked, confused, and then lowered her gun in exasperation. "You know he's going to come back and be beaten to death by the guards, you big mouth?" In my opinion, this is survival of the fittest. At least I'll do it quickly. β
"I'll take full responsibility for saving this fashionable believer," Ryan replied, his female companion rolling her eyes and putting the gun back in its holster. "I'm sure there's hope for him, my bandit friend."
She raised an eyebrow. "How do you know?"
She used to be a bandit?" The snake tattoo on your arm, you're trying to cover it under the other tattoos," Ryan replied, who noticed the detail on poker night. "I've met people like that. Very unfriendly people. β
"I want you to kill them," she replied when the guards let them into the borders of the foundry, "I used to belong to a group of real savages. β
Oh yes, he did.
Ryan and Lanka make their way towards the metal gate and find Jamie and Kei discussing with the other two. Or rather, one woman is talking, everyone else is listening, occasionally nodding.
She is clearly a genome; Her skin was unnaturally pale, and her long hair was bright blue. This mature lady carries a strange elegance, like a fairy on earth. Unlike Ryan's team, she was stylish, wearing a black Greek stone turtle skirt as her outfit, paired with sandals, a shark tooth necklace, and earrings in the shape of a skull.
Ryan can't explain why, but he has bad feelings about her. Mainly because when she speaks, Jamie and Kei are looking as stiff as hell, and even Lanka gets nervous when he sees her.
The courier also recognized her bodyguard as the woman who tried to flirt with him in Bacuto when he messed up a series of things. This time, though, she changed into a black uniform and an assault rifle. Since they hadn't met during the reboot, she didn't recognize him.
The blue-haired woman and her bodyguard pass by Ryan and Lanka on their way to the parking lot and suddenly stop when she notices the courier. "You," said the blue-haired woman, her voice low like that of someone accustomed to being obeyed.
"Me?" Ryan pointed to himself.
"How old are you?" She asked, a pair of piercing gray eyes scrutinizing him. Somehow, it feels like peeping in the water with a hungry crocodile.
"That's a good question." Ryan feigned a bow. "I'm immortal, but don't tell anyone."
"No one is immortal," she replied, vaguely amused. "But I hope to reach your age one day."
Then she ignored him and walked away with her male companion.
"Damn," Ranka whispered. "That's not good."
"Who is she?" Ryan asked curiously.
"Pluto, Augustus's sister, is also his subordinate," Jamie said after the regrouping, visibly worried, "and as soon as he sends her there, she'll be on the ground." β
"Isn't Pluto a character from Roman mythology?" Ryan asked. "I'm for gender equality, but isn't Prutonia a more appropriate?"
"I believe there's something in their house that's themed," Ranka replied, releasing when the little boss was out of sight. "The third member of the trio of brothers, the god of the sea, is Augustus' military advisor."
At least they try to respect the spirit of these names. Ryan appreciates this cultural reference. "What power does she have?"
"If she wants you to die," said Jamie, his eyes darkening, "you die." β
"Why, she vaporized you with lightning-"
"No, you're going to die," Jamie interrupted Ryan, a hint of fear and vigilance in his voice. Maybe he's worried β yes β that Quicksave will try to test that ability. "No warnings, no protection, no counterattacks. If she wants you to die, you just die. At last. β
"Since we still have living enemies, her power is definitely limited," Ki said. "But we don't know them."
This only intrigued Ryan more. He would check it in a loop. However, Sri Lanka wanted more information. "Why is she here?" She asked Jamie.
"Five of our androids have recently died mysteriously," Ki Jeong replied.
βMeta-t
ash ?β
Jamie shook his head. "No, they will loudly declare these murders, it's not their style. Venom is powerful enough to affect genomes, explode, drown, and suffocate, and the Boss thinks it's a new vigilante. Pluto and the Seven Killers Assassination Team will be in charge of this, and if they ask for anything, we will assist them in their mission. β
He said explosives?
"My invisible enemy is here again," Ryan said, glad to have solved the mystery.
"yes, that's what I thought too," Jamie said. "However, unless someone responsible comes to us and wants to fight, we leave the matter to the higher-ups." Once an assassination team has their sights on someone, it's only a matter of time before they fix the problem. β
Ryan felt it was rude to talk about murder.
"Well, some rules on how to call Vulcan," Jamie told Ryan as they stood in front of the metal gate. "Don't joke about her height, for God's sake, don't mention Wynne unless she mentions her first."
Ryan nodded dutifully, and the door opened, letting them in.
Jamie takes them on a guided tour of the foundry, though it soon becomes clear that the name doesn't quite tell the truth. From metalworking to the assembly line, the entire weapons production operation is in this building. The group walked through a scorching room full of stoves and automated assembly lines; They produce guns, bullets, and rockets. Some guards even wore variations of Jamie's own armor, albeit bulkier and more intimidating.
Eventually, they arrived at Vulcan's studio. It's the quintessential lair of genius, full of bulky equipment, glowing glass bulbs, and strange contraptions centuries before modern times.
There's also a big, big robot on standby.
Scrape, it turned out to be a huge set of power armor, albeit almost five meters high, and the width matched it. Although humanoid, the spacesuit is so bulky that it can be called a tank with legs. However, given the number of miniature turbine reactors, and the multi-articulation design of the limbs, Ryan guessed that the machine would move surprisingly fast in the wild. Of course, it has enough weapons to rival a battleship, including a huge rocket launcher on the right arm, cannons, and even beam weapons.
The courier also noticed that the machine was riddled with multiple eye-shaped cameras, perhaps to allow the user to see in all directions. In the end, the machine was gilded, probably to show off as much as possible.
Construction workers were waiting for them, drawing drawings on a large table. Just like Pluto, she turned out to be a girl, despite her code name Vulcan.
To Ryan's surprise, she seemed to be a little younger than him physically. Eighteen, nineteen? Anyway, she was petite, only one meter six tall, with olive skin, sharp black eyes, and black hair tied in a bun with a pencil. As far as her status is concerned, she dresses rather casually, with a black shirt, dirty pants, and a pair of unlaced shoes.
But when she looked at him, Ryan could see the ferocity in her gaze.
"I thought it would be someone higher," Ryan innocently told her. "Like a bipedal wyvern."
The atmosphere in the room became extremely tense, and everyone looked at him as if he was crazy, except for Vulcan, who glared at him fiercely. Ryan whistled as he turned his gaze to the giant mecha.
"We'll know who's taller when I knock your leg off, bastard," the sheriff said, his face reminding Ryan of Ryan. She must have the same height complex. "Because right now, you've just stepped on a mine."
Napoleon is coming!
"Help, please, a little respect." Jamie coughed, and he and the rest of the team nodded at Vulcan. "I'm sorry, sir. He didn't know what he was talking about. β
"Oh no, he has," Vulcan replied angrily, glaring at Ryan. "Bitch is my term. When people speak English, they suffer. β
"Do you have a survival instinct?" Lanka booed Ryan.
"Of course not, I'm immortal. The survival instinct belongs to those who will die. The messenger glanced at the huge armor and noticed the huge reactor behind the machine. Is that a small fusion reactor?"
Vulcan's face showed some surprise, even though she was clearly angry with him. "I'm surprised you could see it."
"I once made one, though not as advanced," Ryan replied, checking the rest of the suit. "And plasma beams for the offense. Smart, smart. β
"Maybe I should give you a live demo." When Vulcan said these words, the spacesuit moved on its own. The other genomes took a step back, especially Jamie, who looked ready to summon an energy sword. "But since you have brains, I think I'll just ruin your legs."
Ryan just kept watching the technological marvel, even as it aimed its weapon at his lower body.
"Hmm." Vulcan frowned, her anger turning to surprise. "You're close to death, but your heartbeat and blood pressure aren't changing. There was also no abnormal neural activity. You don't care at all. β
Wait, how did she know? Is she telepathic with the suit's sensors?
But he should be glad that her anger was gone, replaced by curiosity. She probably thought he still had a trump card.
"I heard that you have advanced technology with you, save quickly." Vulcan said the others were too happy to see her calm down and said nothing. "Are you a genius?"
"of". His intelligence didn't improve, but he spent a lot of time fiddling with advanced technology, and he could be a true genius. Ryan looked at his trench coat and handed the weapon to Vulcan.
"What a beautiful, elegant design," Vulcan whistled, examining its various forms. "You did that?"
"Everyone should have a bomb on them to dissuade!" Ryan avoided a straightforward answer, and he was filled with excitement when confronted with his own bomb maker. "Bombs save lives!"
"That's right," Vulcan replied with the same enthusiasm, unable to suppress her frenzy for the explosion. "Do you know why the Cold War never heated up? Because everyone has a weapon! Absolute destructive power is the key to peace!"
"Oh God, there are two now," Ryan heard Lanka whisper to Jamie, who gritted his teeth nervously. Still, Ryan saw everyone relax a little.
"And what about Maykelen?" Ki asked with a smile. "Bombs won't deal with him."
"An unforeseen variable, twitter, like an alchemist." Vulcan brushed it off and brandished his weapon under Ryan's nose. "Did you see that?"
"Oh, really?"
"If you say it again, I'll shove it down your throat. Since you have valuable skills, I will spare your life, but only this time. Leave no luck on it, unless you want a one-way ticket to Kielville. β
Nice place, he's been there many times. "So, you're not going to give me back the bomb?"
"No, it's your respect tax," she said, before brazenly stealing his phone and putting it in her pocket. "If you join my department, I might change my mind. I have a lot of workers, but very few really competent engineers. There is something wrong with your attitude, but I will tame you. β
Ryan also notices that even though she sounds friendlier, her weapon keeps pointing at him.
"I think he's going to paint Mercury very well." Jamie cleared his throat and defended his organization.
"I found him first, Zambato." Vulcan replied. "If Mercury wants to find a good man, he should get out of his house once in a while."
"I'm glad you're following me, but I'm not a long-term employee," Ryan said. "I'm looking for Lenn, black-haired, blue-eyed, Marxist-Leninist."
"Diver," Vulcan replied, smirking as Ryan looked at her intently. "But I don't see any benefit to me in introducing you to my subcontractors, especially if you're not working with us on a long-term basis."
Subcontractors? In the end, he almost got a taste of reunion!" How much does this privilege cost?"
Vulcan replied with a smile and sat down on her workbench. "You think I'm a liar working for money?"
"Then I'll only have my body left to sell."
Ki Jeong couldn't help but laugh when he heard his joke, and then quickly corrected her expression. Vulcan smiled. "I don't know if you're guts or crazy," she said. "But in fact, I need a fresh and warm body to solve the problem."
βMeta-ga
g ?β Jamie cleared his throat. "You want us to kill them?"
"My crew will take care of Meta," Vulcan turned him down. "The big boss gave us orders. As long as we protect the goods, we can take care of Rust Town. No. What was on my mind was fighting the 'law'. β
"It's the best task," Ryan said happily. "Are we going to evade taxes? There is nothing more dangerous than this! Not even Al Capone can do it!"
"Nobody pays taxes, you big mouth," Lanka noted.
"Private security guards and millionaires have been a little too eager lately," Vulcan said with a sneer. "It's not too destructive, but they're testing us. They believe that the superpowers have weakened our organization. We must remind them not to underestimate Augustus. β
"You want us to attack Dy
Amis's actions?" Jamie asked, and Lanka looked at "us" with a frown.
Vulcan nodded. Dy
AMIS is currently filming a new film, Millionaire. I want you to ruin this studio, send them a letter. β
"Isn't the latest movie being made there......" Jamie didn't finish his sentence before dragging it out.
"Flight of the Wyvern II," Vulcan finished, her eyes glinting with vengeance.
yes, it's business as usual.
"Do you want your personal vendetta to be crisp," Ryan asked, "or is it a little more brittle?"
