Chapter 55: Rehearsals
So far, everything is going well on the Augustan Trail.
Unsurprisingly, Ryan meets Zambato, beats Sarin in the harbor, and now he repeats the same conversation that led him to spend the night at Jamie's house. Everything was fine, the sound of the waves crashing against the pier......
"I have to be sure of one thing," Luigi asked the messenger. "Are you a whistleblower or a double agent?"
"Well, I'm really not on anyone's side," Ryan replied, but then his mouth took to its own, "but I'm a carnival infiltrator, yes." β
Or not.
Everyone present turned to look at him, and the atmosphere became tense. The soldiers raised their weapons, and Zambato's face changed from shock to disappointment and finally to anger.
"Uh-oh."
Well, I learned two lessons.
First, Ryan hates people who tell the truth. Hate them, with a passion.
Second, Zambato can use his laser sword to make people into sashimi. Ryan will never look at sushi in the same light again.
But this time, this time, things will be different. The Messenger has rehearsed the perfectly misleading answer. Luigi's forces force Ryan to tell the truth, but only as the teller says.
"I have to be sure of one thing," Luigi asked him again. "Are you a whistleblower or a double agent?"
"I can't report an organization that I haven't officially joined, and I'm not a double agent." Strictly speaking, he is a third.
"Are you a mole?"
"I'm certainly not a mole, I'm human."
Over there! Saved! He succeeded, he succeeded!
"Well, I should make a fuss about the wording," Luigi sighed, but didn't give up. "Do you, or do you intend to, pass our message on to another organization?"
"Well, yes, I'm going to go. Hell, I've already said it!"
Damn it!
All right.
Well, the third time would be fine.
With timing and intelligence, Ryan skillfully navigated a litany of cause and effect to avoid this doomed problem. He pretends to be charming, friendly to everyone, and distracts those who grunt with funny anecdotes. Now, the Courier and Zambato are ready to return to Plymouth for some delicious pizza.
"Hey, Quicksave," Luigi asked as they took a few steps toward the car. "Before you go, there are a few questions I have to ask every new hire."
"Luigi, seriously, please, don't do this," Ryan replied, his eyes full of pleading. "Don't say that for your own sake. It won't end well, I swear it won't-"
"I'm sorry, agreement. Are you a whistleblower?"
"Yes, yes, yes!" Yes, I am! Is that what you want me to say, Luigi? Is that what you want me to say?"
Quicksave took a deep breath and repelled his rising frustration.
"Luigi," Ryan pointed at the truth-tellers, each raising their weapons in the courier's face. "There's going to be trouble between you and me."
"Where's Luigi?" When the truth-teller doesn't show up at the port, leaving only his henchmen to handle the action, Zambato asks Gollum. "Isn't he supposed to be in charge of this shipment?"
"I'm sorry, he was attacked last night," said the grandmother, holding Luigi's cell phone. Obviously, he had to take the place of an android. "He's in the hospital right now, and he's going to be out of work for a while."
"What?" The news shocked Jamie, who apparently wasn't told. "Who is it?"
"As far as I know, a madman with an ice hockey mask and a club"
"Ice hockey is a very dangerous sport," Ryan said absentmindedly, looking at the sea. "I don't recommend it."
"yes, that's crazy." Gollum nodded. "Apparently Luigi was late for the party, you know, it's normal, he started opening the door of his house and bang!" A certain Friday the 13th madman jumped out of the shadows, broke his jaw with a hockey stick, beat him up, and left. β
"Why?" Jamie almost laughed. "Why Luigi? Is it a robbery?"
"No, that madman didn't even take the money." Gollum replied. "Maybe it's a hate crime?"
"According to eyewitnesses, the attackers looked really agitated," Granger said. "At least that's what I heard."
"Well, Luigi sleeps a lot with other people and is a real family buster," G
u
T 2 noted, "Maybe his boyfriend was jealous?" Someday it will happen. β
"It could also be a superpower." Zambato crosses his arms. "And how did they know where he lived?"
Ryan has been finding hockey equipment longer than Luigi's address. Nobody does that kind of exercise anymore.
"Hurry up, you're staying in a hotel, right?" Jamie asked Ryan. "I think you should spend the night at my house, just in case. The city is not safe at all. β
"Say no more," Ryan replied.
After that, things happened as expected. Jamie invites him home, they play poker together and go to Vulcan's factory, where Ryan saves the panda from extinction.
Ryan's mind has long since gone into autopilot mode, and he lets his sense of time guide him forward. Autopilot is not really a sub-ability, it's just that his consciousness enters a state when he can't go through the same events over and over again. It's no different than daydreaming while doing a mind-numbing task repeatedly.
Human beings are bound by the law of cause and effect. With a few exceptions, he often underwent endless rehearsals for plays. After a while, there was no longer any mystery about him, and there was always the same reaction to the same thing; They forget about him and relearn the same information over and over again. They become machines, and Ryan is the only person in the room.
This repetition can drive anyone crazy.
But in order to achieve a perfect ending, suffering is necessary, and soon, it will end. Once Ryan finds Ryan, everything will be fine. He was convinced of this.
The beep of his cell phone pulls him back to reality, interrupting the flow of cause and effect.
It took Ryan a second to remember the time and place when he suddenly regained consciousness. Extensive cycles and repetitions often erode the genome's perception of reality, especially when his powers notice changes in his personal timeline.
Ryan checked his phone, and Ranka had gone to Vulcan's factory, and the panda was defeated and lay on the ground. This message includes a photo of the Rust Town orphanage, intact and a piece of text underneath.
S: Solved Psyshock. The kids were safe.
Thanks for the tip.
Ryan lives in such surprises, for better or for worse.
When he notices Pluto and her bodyguards talking to Zambato, Ryan thinks things will repeat themselves until he meets Vulcan. Augustus' men froze at the sight of him and said the same thing.
"You," Pluto asked Quicksave.
"Me?" Ryan replied, ready to repeat the same conversation.
"Have we met before?"
This surprised Ryan because he didn't expect this answer. "Maybe, I'm unforgettable."
"I'm sure we've met," Pluto replied, her tone changing from curiosity to bewilderment. "Who are you?"
"Boss, what's wrong?" Her bodyguard asks Pluto, and Lanka stands quietly next to Ryan. Her boss's attention made her speechless.
"He was marked," Pluto said. "But I don't remember him."
β¦
And shit! Did her superpowers allow him to travel through time?
"Is something wrong, boss?" Jamie joins the conversation as well, carefully backing up Ryan and Ki-jeong.
"Who's your new member, Zambato?"
Ryan prepares to joke when Jamie intrudes on Ryan's shoulder when he intrudes on his private space. When you talk to her, he says almost out loud. "Help." Zambato answered Pluto's question in place of the messenger. "He's Violet. Time-stoppe
γ β
"Not the Blue Man?" Pluto stared at Ryan as if he wanted to spy on his soul. The courier couldn't explain why, but he felt the pressure around him mount. The air thickened, and something weighed on his heart.
Pluto's female bodyguard noted: "Sykes will notice memory changes or information dangers." "Maybe your superpowers will interfere with each other?"
Pluto didn't seem convinced, and her eyes fell on Ryan. The messenger whistled and looked away innocently, and Zambato defended him. "It's a little weird to save quickly, but he's reliable." "He helped us repel sarin gas yesterdayβ"
"What's your name, help?" She asked Ryan, completely ignoring Zambato's words. "Your real name."
"Oh, I'm Ryan!" He replied with a feigned respect, easing the tension. "Ryan Romano. I'm immortal, but don't tell anyone. β
"No one can live forever," she replied coldly. "I still have somewhere to go now, but I'll call you soon to get things straight. Play stupid, pretend to be smart, run away, or say no, and you'll die. β
The way she threatened him, no, wait, that's not a threat. This is a statement.
If Ryan doesn't follow her orders, he'll die. At last.
The Courier and his team silently watched her subordinates and her bodyguards leave until they disappeared from sight. At first, no one dared to speak, so Ryan broke the silence. "So, who wants to learn Chinese?" He asked.
"Damn," Ranka said, relieved. "Big mouth, what the did you do?"
"What did I not do?!" Ryan replied, equally confused. "Or do you prefer Italian food?"
"It's serious, help," Jamie said. "That woman was Pluto, Augustus' sister and subordinate. Her interest is not a good thing. β
"I suggest you follow her command without question," Ki Jeong said with a worried look on her face, "and she can kill with her brains." β
"Why is she here?" Lanka asked her captain.
"The boss ordered a tough crackdown on Meta-Ga
g," Jamie replied with his hands crossed. "Vulcan will be in command of the clean-up, as she has been eager to test her new weapons on the battlefield, and Pluto lends her the Seven Killers assassination team." I said, it's finally time for us to clean up the trash. β
"Especially after they treated poor Luigi like that," Ki said with a frown. "Assault on him in front of his house...... If you don't feel safe at home anymore......"
"Can we be sure it was the superpowers?" Lanka asked suspiciously. "I mean, it's just a guy with a hockey cross. If it was a Meta, there should have been more casualties. β
"It could be that they bought an unmotivated addict," Jamie replied. βMeta-Ga
G is not a big organization. It makes sense for them to outsource the dirty work. β
Ryan listened to the discussion, trying to figure out what was going on. It seems that the Shroud fulfilled his promise and no longer aimed at the assassination of Augustus. With no one to divert their attention, the criminal syndicate decides to focus entirely on eliminating the Parapower Gang.
Ryan isn't sure how Pluto's new interest in him will play out. This could threaten his entire infiltration mission, and he must figure out how she would recognize him even if he changed the timeline.
Damn, every time he makes progress, a new problem arises!
No, wait, it doesn't matter. Ryan just needs to cooperate until Vulcan tells him how to contact Ryan. He and Augustus didn't need to stay together longer than that. If they try to force him to look for him one by one......
They won't end well.
Next, they enter Vulcan's factory, and Zambato tells Ryan how to talk to Capo again. Ryan barely notices this, as he has already ignored Pluto's advice for the first time, but the tense meeting with Pluto makes the Courier reconsider how to deal with this fickle genius. There was already one high-ranking Augustus who doubted him, and his long-awaited meeting with Lenn was coming, and there was no point in alienating another Augustus.
Even if Quicksave hates it, he has to be obedient.
Ryan and Co walked into Vulcan's workshop, and the courier's eyes were immediately drawn to the massive armor. It feels strange to see Ryan again after the genius tries to murder Ryan with this giant machine.
This time Ryan didn't make fun of Vulcan's height, instead focusing entirely on her armor, while Zambato and Capo exchanged self-introductions. However, Vulcan soon noticed that Ryan was interested in her work.
"Impressions? She asks Ryan, apparently hoping that he will flatter her.
"Interesting design, especially for miniature fusion reactors," Ryan replied naively. "But you should apply a layer of shock protection to the joints. Someone may break them by applying selective pressure. β
"I thought of it," she replied, a little surprised by his insight. "But I haven't found an alloy composite that can resist the friction of intense motion without clogging the arm. Considering its intended goal, I prefer speed over defense. β
Rya
Remember last time Wyve
How to step on the machine, but he kept this interesting anecdote to himself. "So, why not launch a plastic derivative?"
Vulcan sat at her workbench, a hint of interest on her face. "Are you a genius, help?"
"I don't know much, but I don't know much about Ge
ius-tech has experience. He absentmindedly threw it at her. And, well, pretty much everything. β
"Everything?" Wywen's nemesis looked at the bomb in fascination. "What a beautiful design......
"Except for ice skating." Now that he's thinking about it, Rya
It really should be thrown into a loop to master this skill in case he fights the ghoul again. "Do you want to keep the bomb?" Can I bribe you with it?"
"Can I keep it?" Until now, Vulcan looked like a child who received a Christmas surprise gift.
"Is this what love at first sight looks like?" Lanka pondered, his face expressionless. "I thought it was a lie."
"Watch your tongue, ball." Vulcan replied, keeping the bomb. "Help, I want you to join my department. You start going to work tomorrow. β
Wow, wow, wow, she skipped a lot of steps! Jamie immediately tries to justify his imaginary purity. "I think he probably got along well with Mercury," he cleared his throat, "and Pluto wanted to see him." She didn't like him. β
"Pluto?" Vulcan shrugged. "She's suspicious, but I know how to deal with her. She didn't want me to join when I first joined, but now I'm here. Don't worry about her, help, I'll cover you. β
Is she really friendly? This is in stark contrast to the irascible violent criminals who tried to murder Ryan a few cycles ago.
"As for Mercury, I've examined the quick save first, and he'll be wasted on the work of his entourage," the genius added with smug contempt, ignoring Jamie.
"I appreciate your offer, but I'm not interested in long-term work," Ryan replied. "I'm looking for Lenn, black-haired, blue-eyed, Marxist-Leninist."

"I know she has an undersea base, and you have a connection to her," Ryan said, putting his hand behind his back. "I would appreciate it if you could send me there."
"You're well-informed," Vulcan replied, then made a strange expression. "I wouldn't use the word 'contact' to describe her. We're more like genius pen pals, sometimes trading technology. I can arrange a meeting, but it's not free. β
Ryan thinks she wants him to invite him to dinner in return, but instead, she orders them to get revenge by ruining Wywen's movie. Some things have never changed.
Still, he looked around for hidden cameras or bombs. It's not going to go that way, right?
"Tomorrow the work is done, Pluto's troubles are solved, come again, Ryan," Vulcan said. "I'll pay you to change your mind about long-term employment."
The courier noticed that she was now calling her by her first name.
There's nothing like one that wins a woman's love.
"It turned out to be good," Ranka said as they left the factory, very surprised. "I thought you'd mess it up, you big mouth, but she seems to like you."
"Are you okay?" After leaving the factory, Jamie asks Ryan.
"Why is that asking, Yojimbo?" The Courier asked rhetorically.
"You look depressed." The swordsman noted. "I can't say it's a bad thing, but you seem frustrated, man."
Sharp. In fact, Ryan doesn't feel good because he's very close to his goal. He's eliminated the Shroud's distractions, and things are going well, and unless Pluto decides to kill him outright, he should be able to meet Lunn again tomorrow. The path seems clear.
He thought he would be excited and happy to overcome all the obstacles in his path, but Ryan couldn't shake off a vague sense of unease. It's like a person who has been training to climb Mount Everest all his life, and the summit is just around the corner.
He was afraid of disappointment.
