Chapter 131: Defenders of the Kingdom
"You don't believe me?" Ryan asked Ryan, his feet dangling from the edge of the orphanage's roof. The stars shone brightly in the polluted sky of New Rome, and their light pierced the darkness.
"How could I?" Lunn asked, holding her head in both hands. Her water gun was always within reach of her. "Time travel? Downloadable memories? This... It's crazy, Riley. Lose your marbles. And my father...... You're saying my father is still alive, that Dinas ...... That Dinas turned him into a ......"
The virus can live as long as it wants. Wait, if Pluto's superpowers register him, will it kill him forever? Food for thought.
Ryan held up a hand to comfort Ryan, but his old friend flinched. Losing her memory, all the trust he had built between them was gone; It used to hurt a lot, but this time it won't. With Livia's help, forgetfulness is no longer a curse, but a temporary obstacle.
If he can convince Ryan to accept the memory transfer procedure. This can be difficult given her trust issues.
Maybe Rya
Should he save a few seconds after starting a new cycle? If he could bring someone back immediately, it would at least make the memory transfer permanent. They will only remember one cycle, so it's an imperfect solution, but it's better than nothing.
"This ...... This is too much. Too much. I need time to digest this. Ryan clasped his hands together and breathed heavily. It took her a few minutes to recover, and Ryan waited patiently. "I need to look at the technology in question, Ri
iγ If it's really mine, if it's really mine, I'll recognize it. All other things, you can invent or learn by other means, but ......"
"Of course," Ryan replied in a warm tone, trying to reassure her. "You can do whatever you need."
Len took a deep breath. "Rihanna. What's wrong with me? She asked in a soft, feeble voice. "When we get to the lab, let's say I believe you...... You say I'm dead. But don't know how. How did I die?"
"Do you really want to know?" Ryan asked with a sigh. "It hurts, shorty."
"Is it more important than everything you told me?" She held back tears. "He killed me."
"Yes," Ryan admitted. She has the right to know the truth, no matter how terrible it may be. "You have his shadow in your blood. Some sort of sleeper agent or tracking device. When you approached your fatherβ"
"I became him." Warm tears rained down Lun's cheeks, and she pinched her nose to keep herself from crying.
Perhaps deep down she always knew it was possible, even though she refused to believe it.
She did believe in Ryan. Even as strange the story sounds, the dwarf still thinks her old friends won't lie to her. No matter how horrible the story is.
"Ryan, there is ......" Ryan struggled to find the right words so she wouldn't panic. If the blood sample inside your body can turn you into a monster, maybe it can do something more subtle?"
Len glared at him, her grief turning to anger. "You mean...... You're saying my father influenced my mind. How do I feel...... My feelings about him are not my own. β
"Maybe, maybe not. But as long as you have this infection, suspicion will be there. The messenger crossed his arms. Len, we have to take it out. Not only for others, but also for yourself. β
"How? It's inside me, Riley. It's in my blood like cancer, and your vaccine doesn't work against it. β
"I know a few days before I can help." He had already sent an email to Dr. Tellano through the correspondent's safe passage offering to work with him on "copycat" research and asking for information about his secret "Monster Girl" project, much to the correspondent's great shame. "One person can even help you ......"
"My depression?" Le
frowned. "I ...... I'm not a problem that needs to be solved. β
"No, no." That's why he's always opposed interacting with her in multiple loops. If her experience doesn't come to fruition, then the courier will treat her like an equation rather than a person. "Yes...... If you will. After you regain your memory. β
"What if I don't want you to be transferred?" Blue wiped away tears with her hands. "Can you repeat this conversation until I agree?"
Ryan pauses to think about it, realizing that his entire plan hinges on Ryan's acceptance of memory transfer. What can he do if his amnesiac friend doesn't want to? Kinapping her and forcibly transferring her memories? Find a way to transfer stored knowledge without the need for Le
Agreed?
"Would you rather stay amnesia?" The messenger asked. "It's not brainwashing. You will be reminded of the memories you have forgotten, but it will not erase your memories. β
"But it's going to change me, I don't know how. You know, but ......"
"You're scared of what you're going to learn," Ryan guessed. Ignorance is bliss.
"Answer me, Reilly."
"I will respect your choice. Even if it hurts. "In the end, Ryan couldn't impose his decision on the people he loved." I can reach out, but you have to reach out too. β
Lunn lifted his knees and held them like fetuses with his arms. Her expression was thoughtful and incomprehensible.
"Mental shock will hit this place in two days." Ryan reminded her and changed the subject. "We need to be ready for that."
"This place sucks," Ryan said, looking at the bright neon lights of New Rome. "The deeper I walked, the stronger the stench. Flashy colors only cover up the ugliness behind it. β
"I agree with you, most of the locals don't have a sense of fashion, but there are still quite a few locals who are glamorous." Ryan should have introduced Ryan to the wardrobe at some point. "Where did you go after we broke up?"
"The Canary Islands," Len admitted. "The submarine's autopilot tried to take me to the United States, but there was a problem with the engine halfway through, causing it to turn to the nearest island. I stayed there for a few months before leaving. β
So LaΓ―ka is named after it. "Nice place," Ryan said. "I am surprised that they were able to create an independent republic from Dinas , considering that half of Spain was under their control."
Lunn looked up in surprise. "Where did you go?"
"Yes, I think it's ......" two hundred years ago? Ryan's memories are a bit fuzzy because his adventures in North Africa are not memorable. "It's been a while. We must be missing each other. β
"That'...... That's nice. The people on the island are very nice. β
"Will you ever go back there?" Ryan asked, his old friend shaking his head.
"They still fight sometimes," she said. "Wherever I go...... There are always genomes that want more. I couldn't change it there, and I couldn't change it in New Rome. β
"You still can."
"Even if we reveal how the counterfeit is really made, Dy
AMIS will also continue to oppress the people. If they can do it for a few extra euros...... Then they can do anything. She shook her head. Augustus destroyed lives through drugs and blood money. I've seen the ruins of Malta at the bottom of the sea, Reli. Augustus built an underwater tomb for thousands of people. β
She wasn't wrong, but once again she saw only the darkness and not the stars. "I think these groups can change," Ryan recalled of his Il Miglio
e loop and his discussion with Livia. "If there is the right person in charge."
"I hope you're right."
"But you don't believe me." Ryan shrugged, stood up, and walked on the roof. "It's okay, I'll change your mind."
"Where are you going?" Len bit his lower lip. "You can ...... You can stay, you know. β
"Thanks," Ryan said from the bottom of his heart. "I still have a date, though."
He walked over to the door that separated the roof from the downstairs, but his hand stopped at the doorknob. "Lunn, there's one thing I've never dared to ask you before, not in any of our conversations." Ryan peeked over his shoulder, who was still sitting on the edge of the roof. "That day, when I returned to our hiding place...... You and the submarine are gone. Did you leave, or was it because of autopilot?"
Len looked away, avoiding his. "I waited until the last moment for you and Daddy, and when you didn't come back, I ...... I don't know what to do. I thought you were both dead, I ...... I just let LaΓ―ka take me away. β
With his family gone, Lunn loses all hope for a better life.
But she waited until the last minute to see Ryan.
So, he won't abandon her.
Ryan leaves Ryan to think about what he said to her, and he and little Sara cross the path up the stairs. She must have wanted to eavesdrop, only to find the door tightly shut. "Hey, little one," the courier waved at the wayward child, happy to tease her. "Did you see my dog?" I'm going to take her for a walk. β
"Wait until I'm puberty, bastard," the little girl replied, her arms crossed with her mouth crossed. "Your puppy is out there playing with that lazy cat and your rabbit."
οΌ..
Ryan's hand hurried over his trench coat, searching his pockets.
Play? Examine.
Gun? Examine.
Knives? Examine.
Buzzer? Examine.
Plushie?
Not checked.
"Uh-oh."
Ryan rushes outside and slams the door to the orphanage, much to Sarah's surprise.
He found Henriette "playing" with Oglen Henry in the yard. The courier introduces his pets to each other, and the aristocratic cat treats the lower-class dogs the way the aristocracy treats the peasant; Trying to ignore her presence. However, Henriette was still too stubborn, or too stupid, to realize this. She kept licking the cat and rubbing her nose against it, trying to elicit a reaction from the cat, but to no avail.
The plush toy sits on the steps with the button on its back turned on. The evil long-eared demon scanned the southern part of New Rome, perhaps dreaming of setting the city on fire.
How is it? Ryan didn't let it get close to the orphans! Who stole his car and then turned on the machine?
Unless...
The courier thinks it was a member of the Yuan Gang who accidentally opened it during the last cycle, mistaking it for something harmless. But now that he remembered, the timing of rescuing this furry horror creature was a little too perfect.
"You can always activate." Ryan guessed in horror. "You're just pretending."
All the time.
All along, the time traveler thought he had tied the demon to a pentagram, but it could come at any moment. Ryan was disillusioned with controlling himself, his fingers trembling with fear. For centuries, for centuries, he has lived under the domination of a horror that he calls terror, but which he cannot let go.
The stuffed animal looked at his creator with large blue eyes, then turned behind him; Ryan was stunned when he heard little Sara follow him out. The Messenger's heart skipped a beat when he saw that all his hopes for the cycle had vanished.
Then the abyss looked away.
The stuffed animal ignored both of them and stared at Mount Augustus. It doesn't go into cute mode and doesn't make a sound. There was no pre-recorded message in response to Ryan's words; Neither the laser nor the switchblade spilled blood in the orphanage.
Plush toys don't want to play anymore.
"Aren't you going to kill?" Ryan asks him about the terrible creation. "Don't even one or two neurotic entrails disembowel?"
Don't answer.
Ryan didn't hear the whispers either. The alien's voice followed the stuffed animal, but they were silent. The shadow of the toy, once so terrifying, is now half shrunk.
"You're talking to a toy," Sara said. "I know you're an addict."
Even the promise of a massacre or the presence of preschoolers does not cause a reaction. Instead, the stuffed animal keeps glaring at Mount Augustus with its big blue eyes; The evil omen in their hearts was replaced by sourness. Ryan comes to a terrible conclusion, and everyone clearly sees the maddening truth.
Lightning Bart completely defeats the stuffed animal and accomplishes the impossible.
He gave it depression.
Ryan then knocked on the door of the Shroud. He came a little earlier than usual, but he gave me a free ghoul stuffed toy. The psychopath is already numb, and Ryan wonders if his immortality has succumbed.
While Ryan doesn't mention time travel, he tells the translucent vigilante pretty much everything else. The two sat opposite each other in the shroud's hideout for an hour, the vigilante as silent as a grave. By the time his guests finished telling his story, all the windows cracked, and the New Rome outside had dawned.
Matthias Martel said only one word.
"Fuck".
"Almost," Ryan said. "I'm pretty sure that counterfeits also contain carcinogens, although I can't prove it."
The Shroud folded his hands and pondered what he had learned. "Do you have conclusive evidence that blood constitutes a counterfeit?" To prevent him from coming back, we destroyed all the samples. β
"I have." Ryan allows Ryan to take a drop of blood for research, and he gives it to the vigilantes. "Take it with Dy
AMIS counterfeit contact and you will see. Keep a flamethrower nearby, though. β
"I also need vaccine data," Sh
Oud said as he carefully examined the blood in the syringe. Even now, Ryan was half-expecting it to burst out of the container. "If our genius confirms what you say, then we will have to go to New Rome in a big way."
"I'd rather avoid that," Ryan said. "Trust me, if you do that, you'll get more on the windshield than pigeon, Marty."
The armor of the glass manipulator seems to be moving, as if it is about to grow spikes. After a moment of hesitation, he took off his helmet and revealed his true colors. He approached Ryan's head and stared into his eyes with an absolute, chillingly serious look.
"From what you told me, Ogre Adam β a man so terrifying that he was already eating people long before he gained his superpowers β would get an orbital superweapon in a matter of days, and Dy
AMIS has infected thousands of people with the seeds of a global pandemic," said Matthias Martel. "These two disasters were possible because we didn't address them properly. Now, tell me about Quicksave. How is it that this situation does not deserve our full attention?"
"I told you I could choose any universe I wanted," Ryan lied. "If the sun comes here, the sun will set in New Rome." Lightning Ass will be in charge. Countless innocent people will die. β
"That's what you said," replied the vigilante.
Ryan squinted at the hero. "How many times have you guys spanked Lightning ass?"
The Shroud clenched his fists. "Too many times."
They tried to bring him down for years, but failed. "Then you know that gangster Zeus is a ruthless bastard who only cares about power and revenge," Ryan said. As the world around him crumbled, the madman's memories of the sunshine knocking down came to life in the messenger's mind. "He was a painful old man who died of cancer. He had nothing left to lose except his daughter. β
"I know."
"Good. Now, imagine him near the powder keg in the city. Do you think he'll let go of his frustration with the bigger threat, or will he make things worse in order to get revenge on Leo?"
The silence of the Shroud is an answer in itself.
Ryan gave him the fatal blow. "You have a plan for a new Rome, but it doesn't take into account Adam or Blood. It can't survive contact with enemies, so you'll have to adapt. β
"Who are you working for, save?" Matthias thought for a moment and asked. "Which side are you on?"
"Field!" Ryan put his hand on his chest. "And my own side."
Mathias looked at him with a frown. "So you're just trying to protect yourself?"
"Didn't anyone tell you I wasn't dead?" Ryan shrugged. "I don't want the city to burn down, and I don't want the world to be destroyed, isn't that too much to ask?" I have friends on both sides and I want them all to be happy. Isn't that what you want?"
"Yes, I want to save lives." Sh
Oud replied, leaning back in his chair. "But I want to save them permanently. We had tried to deal with blood problems before, and Dinas had tricked us into using him to make money. We killed Mech
o
, but his weapons can still be used by worse bad guys. I don't want to repeat everything in five years. β
Ryan scrutinized him. "You know that something like this happens with bloodflow." That's what he drew from their brief interaction in the last round.
The vigilante nodded. "My mother, Alice Martel, used to be called Pisia"
"Seer?" Ryan never met her, even though she was a member of the original carnival. By the time they traced the bloodstream, she had already left the group. "My condolences."
"She's alive." The Shroud looked away sadly. "She's with Mech
o
She was almost killed in the battle, but she was recuperating with my father in Denmark. β
"To recover, is to come back from the dead?"
"Nihog and his men haven't made that much progress," Safrier replied. "In her fight against the MEC
o
Before being injured in the operation, my mother provided a detailed report on the future threats to the world. While Augustus is at the top, blood flow is number one. If your sister dies, he will cause an extinction event. β
That's why Carnival is so relentlessly pursuing this bloody headache. Unfortunately, all they did was delay the disaster and make matters worse for Dinamis. Ryan shuddered at the thought of Ryan immersed in that terrible horror.
The prophecy came true.
But the prophet did not determine the course of time.
Ryan.
"Unless we take action, this will happen," the courier said. "But we can still change the future. If we work together, we can put an end to this nightmare once and for all. β
"How?" Matthias asked suspiciously. "Without the support of Leo, Mr. Bo and others, our strength would not be enough to destroy the bunkers. Dy
amis is corrupt, so we can't rely on Il Miglio either
e's help. β
"There are other heroes in Rome," Ryan said. "Let me recruit an elite team of rascals and misfits!" Who knows, maybe you'll find love among them!"
Sh
Oud doesn't trust his wingman very much. "Even if we defeat the enemy on our own, it is not enough to save lives, save quickly. Justice must be done. Augustus could not continue to poison the people, especially not to continue exploiting Costa's daughter. He can't get away with it, and neither can the Manada family. β
"I know." After witnessing Lightning Ass ravage New Rome in one cycle and worsen its destruction in another, Ryan vows to bring down the immortal emperor. Maybe he's the only one who has the power to do that. "But you can leave Augustus to me. If you take care of the blood vaccine, my transparent friend, I swear I'll destroy the Happiness Factory and give Julie Costa's daughter back to you. Frying things is my passion in life. β
"You can't expect Leo and the others to wait for things to pass."
"There are other Mechs
o
base, "Rya
said, the vigilante's eyes widened in horror. "The bunker underneath the dump is one of many, but I recorded their location. As we deal with the situation in New Rome, the sun can hunt them down. With his legacy cleared, we can finally exorcise the ghost of Maykelen forever. β
If you're lucky, Mech
o
The base could also cause Bahamut to self-detonate, preventing others from using the orbital laser again.
"What about the Manadas?" The Shroud asked. "Hector is crazy, Radiation is even more crazy, Blackthorne lied to us"
"In fact, even though he doesn't feel the same way about fashion as I do, I believe our dear gardener is the cleanest of them all."
Rya
Remember at the end of the previous restart, E
Ique complains to his brother that he lied to him. Jia also told the courier that the manager was supposed to manage the production of counterfeit elixirs until he visited Lab 66 and left in disgust. He must have discovered his family's sordid secrets.
The Atom Smasher was too fanatical, and his father was too depraved. Ryan mistakes the gardener for a supervillain, but he has the right intentions.
E
ique is Livia in Dy
Opponents of AMIS. A well-meaning man tried to reform his organization from within, but was unable to take a strong stance because of the love of his family. They all need to inherit the throne, and the new Rome will know peace.
Remove Hecto
Ma
ADA is easy; Ryan just needs to expose his corruption and alliance with Hannifat Lecter.
But radiation will not retreat without a fight.
"We can work with Green Hands to clean up their company's secrets," Rya
Say. "I think there's a part of him that wants to take action, but he's not sure how. "If you come to him with hard data about the dangers posed by his company's panacea, he might change his mind," the man said.
"I'll tell Leo and Stitch about your plans, but I can't guarantee anything." The Shroud marks a brief pause. "You said Psyshock was going to attack Rust Tow on May 10th
of orphanages?"
"Yes, and then we'll fight back right away."
"The reason Carnival is so effective is because of my mother," Sh
Oud said. "Now I know why. After she got sick, I tried to make up for her slackness, but I couldn't see the future. You can, Quicksave. It's almost unfair. β
"Believe me, I've earned this knowledge."
Matthias didn't say anything, looking at Ryan carefully. His gaze shifted to the Courier's mask and hat, and the vigilante's face tensed. He didn't say a word for half a minute, as if he was thinking about something.
"Are you in love with me?" Ryan asked. "Trust me, I've always felt that way."
"How far can you go back?"
The courier thanked the mask for covering his face. "Excuse me?"
"It's not all an illusion of alternating timelines. You know so much, there are so many vivid details. Even the Blue Family, which is as powerful as my mother, will have a hard time providing all the secrets you distribute like candy, and you are the Purple Family. You know mine. β
He's too sharp to his own detriment.
"You don't just freeze time," Matthias guessed. "You can control it. You are a time dynamicist. β
Ryan's first reaction was misleading.
Instead, he kept silent, thinking about what he was going to say next.
For centuries, the messenger has kept his business card hidden on his chest. The misadventures of the alchemist and many others taught him to be cautious. But at a certain point, this caution turned into paranoia, until he no longer trusted anyone. Trust is a two-way street, an open wound.
Ryan only mustered the courage to go to Jasmine when she lost everything, and she staked her life on his success. Livia is an example of bad luck, but they learn to trust each other. Bianca sacrificed her life for him. Even alchemists are trying to make up for their mistakes.
Slowly, Ryan Romano learned to open up.
Although Matthias Martel killed the Time Traveler a few times before they met, his intentions were good. He reminds Ryan of Felix, a young man with a strong desire to make amends. After interacting with him for so many laps, Ryan learned more about this vigilante. Even respect him.
Maybe the courier leaked so much information because he subconsciously trusted the carnival members. If he is with someone else, he will be much more careful when he speaks. Ryan wants the vigilante to be on his side and be a trusted ally, not a means to an end.
So, he gave it a try.
"What if I am?"
"Then I don't think you can go far." Mathias rubbed his fingers. "Do you know why we're betting on Augustus now?" We have listed the threats to the world that my mother listed. We defeated madmen, warlords, and monsters. But we will never be able to defeat him. Right now...... Now we have to do it. β
Ryan tensed. "He's going to do something."
"At some point in the coming years, Augustus will attack Dimenis and try to take over Europe by force. He'll give it his all. It would be a repeat for Malta, and he would not rest on his laurels for anything but a complete victory. Although it will cost a lot of lives, he will get what he wants. β
Ryan remembers watching New Rome burn to the ground by Augustus and the Miglio-Power Alliance. The courier thought it was the appearance of Sunshine that started it all, but in fact, it just accelerated the timeline of the lightning ass.
Tyrants do not retire quietly.
When Augustus dies of cancer, he learns from the big fat Adam. He will try to ensure that after his death and burial, Livia will rule the country without an opponent, and he will destroy Dinams, Carnival, and anyone he can find in the little time he has left. Maybe Lightning Ass thought he would leave honorably, leaving his daughter to be Queen of Ashes.
Did Livia see it in the vision? Is that why she manages her father so resolutely so that he doesn't "overreact"?
"Since we can't defeat Augustus directly, we decided to weaken this organization," Matthias admitted. "Even though he is omnipotent, he is only one person. He needs soldiers to carry out his will, and drugs to fill his war fund. If we do this, help, can we stop him?"
The tone of the vigilante was hesitant and pleading. He wanted to hear an affirmative answer, confirming that his efforts had not been in vain.
And Ryan couldn't say yes.
The Time Traveler managed to influence Augustus in the previous loop, yes, but his punch hurt the Courier more than his enemies. The Ivory Giant's revenge throws Ryan into a building, and he then survives Leo Hargraves' supernova explosion. All of this happens after Lightning Ass hits the stuffed animal hard and the terrifying monster is in an existential crisis.
Sunshine can bring down Mackelen, but Augustus cannot.
Plush toys can destroy the world, but Augustus won't. The hyperspace horrors that had haunted Ryan's dreams for centuries hadn't even hurt him. The darkness could have been, but it's already home.
Augustus is the most powerful creature on earth, except for the Ultimate; Ryan doesn't have a permanent way to bring him down.
It's just hope.
"I might have a way," Ryan said. "Let him do it once and for all."
"May." The Shroud repeated in frustration. "Possibly".
"May," the time traveler admitted. "I need more time. I'm not going to let him win, I swear. It doesn't matter how long it takes, no matter how much it costs. I'm not going to let him win. β
This did not reassure Mathius, but it saved him from despair. "That extinction event, Adam took over the Bahamas...... Has it happened before?"
Ryan hesitated, but then nodded slowly. Matthias Martel lowered his head and trembled with anger. In Dy
amis, at Meta-Ga
g, but most importantly himself.
"I'm trying to figure it out, but I can't do it alone," Ryan admitted to vigilantes and himself. "So...... Are you there?"
Mathias snickered, a determined expression on his face. "Do you still need to ask?"
So, Ryan recruited another Avenger.
There is only one left. An independent hero who is not subordinate to Dy
Amis, his strength and purity of heart are unparalleled. Half-man, half-beast, both.
As Ryan left the Shroud's hut, he dialed a number on his phone and listened to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. He didn't have to wait long because someone came to pick him up before the courier could return to his Plymouth rage.
"Really?" The voice on the other end of the phone
"Timmy?" Ryan replied, opening the door. Henriette barks in the back seat, while Jugne-Henry snoozes and the stuffed animal sulks.
"That's the name of the panda!" Poor child, he must have been waiting for hours at his phone, desperately hoping to receive a call. "Panda ...... Pandas can do anything. Even rescued the cat into a tree!"
"Dear bear, today is your lucky day."
Ryan smiled behind the mask.
"Tell me, have you considered joining a touring circus?"
