Chapter 28: Magical Items and Charms
"You've been using this gun for at least two years, and it's not well maintained, the rifling is almost worn out, and it's become a smoothbore gun, and the bolt and hammer are rusty. This will seriously affect the accuracy of the shot, and may even explode the chamber, you as a gun user will not be unaware, right? β
Old Neil, dressed in black, still sat at his mottled table, holding Angel's 0.45-inch revolver. He turned on the wheel, pointed the gap at the gas lamp on the wall, and looked in along the muzzle of the gun.
Angel sat opposite him, and seeing that his weapon was criticized as worthless, he hurriedly defended:
"This gun is second-hand, I got it in this condition, if it is a new gun, I will definitely take good care of it, and I will never make it like this."
"I mean, you should have come in sooner to get a new one."
Putting down the revolver, Old Neil glanced at Angel, and a smile suddenly appeared on his straight face.
"When the bullets are gone, they come and get them, and don't use the guns to this extent, and the other guys have to change their guns two or three times a year, and most of the old weapons they come back are similar to the new ones. Guns are consumables, consumables, just like bullets! β
He emphasized.
Angel's lips quirmed, as if she had a thousand words, but finally blurted out, "You're right." β
She came to Black Thorn Security early this morning, and in addition to Dunn Smith's daily report to the station, the most important thing was to replace her revolver.
I thought that this kind of thing would be difficult, but I didn't expect Dunn to wave a big pen, not only agreed to Angel's request to change the gun, but also offered to give her the badge of the night watchman and apply for a "weapon use certificate".
"Miss Granger, you don't want to be stopped and questioned by a police officer on the street with a gun, do you?"
As he wrote the note, Dunn asked Angel.
Pushing the strange thoughts out of her mind, she handed over the slip in her hand: "A 0.45-inch revolver, 40 rounds of ammunition of the same caliber, and a badge of the Special Operations Department." β
"I was a little curious when you came to pick up the bullets last time, why do you use such a large-caliber revolver when you are a girl?" Old Neil took the slip and didn't immediately go to the arsenal to get the items, but asked with a smile.
"I think pistols are essentially melee weapons, and power and stopping are more important." Angel answered truthfully that this was the reason why she had been using the revolver that Cole Granger had left behind, instead of replacing it with a small-caliber revolver with a moderate power and a 6 or even 7-round nest.
"Well, that's a pretty standard answer, but I'd like you to both use weapons of the same calibre, so that you can replenish each other's ammunition in battle, and it's also convenient for me to be in charge of the arsenal."
Old Neil shook the note in his hand, turned his head and entered the iron door behind him, and in a few moments pulled out a brand new pistol, two boxes of ammunition, and an iron badge about half the size of a palm.
The badge is inlaid with silver lettering that reads "Ahowa County Police Department" and "Special Operations Division Seventh Squad" and surrounds the twin swords that represent the police system and the cross-embellished crown emblem.
The new revolver was more elaborately crafted than Angel's' original, with carefully polished wooden handles, the same engraved police badges, and the metal parts gleaming in the flickering gaslight.
The bullets are a box of ordinary pistol bullets and a box of demon hunting bullets, which are packed in cardboard boxes and iron boxes as before.
After taking the item, Angel signed her name in the notebook handed by Old Neil, and the handover was completed.
"Are old weapons destroyed or stored?" Seeing Neil Sr. put her old revolver in a box under the table, Angel asked curiously.
"Normally, we regularly hand them over to the police in Tingen, and they dismantle and destroy the weapons to prevent them from flowing out of the hands of civilians or even into the underground market, although civilian weapons have become proliferated, but this process still has to be done."
Old Neil kicked the case containing the recovered weapon and replied.
"Of course, this is not the case with weapons that are damaged when we come into contact with extraordinary events, and sometimes these weapons are contaminated with extraordinary powers and even become an extraordinary or magical item in their own right. It is very dangerous to give them to ordinary people, and the church has special people who are responsible for disposing of them. β
Angel captures the point of Neil Sr.'s words: "Magical items? β
"Any item that has been exposed to extraordinary properties for a long time may become an item with extraordinary powers, and we call this kind of item a magical item, even if it is just a mistaken contact with a spiritual material, or even a body part of an extraordinary person, it will become an extraordinary item with spiritual power."
Old Neil leaned back in his chair and spoke in a slow tone like a teacher.
"Most of these items are simply imbued with power and cannot be used, but a small percentage of them will gain extraordinary traits and become magical items with that trait. It is said that there are craftsmen within the church who can actively combine ordinary and extraordinary materials to make ordinary weapons into extraordinary weapons with extraordinary abilities. β
Filtering out those tongue-twisting words and concepts, Angel captures the heart of Old Neil's words, the extraordinary weapon.
So, where can I buy it - she almost blurted out.
Old Neil squeezed his eyes and smiled, "You want to ask where you can get this weapon, right?" That's what everyone who hears me say about extraordinary weapons. β
"My answer is, no."
"As far as I know, the official Extraordinaries in the entire city of Tingen can't come up with a single extraordinary weapon combinedβah, unlike the guys at the Heart of the Machine, they have their own craftsmen who can craft weapons that are less effective, but no less dangerous. Maybe you can try your luck at the Underground Market and spend a fortune, or get one crafted from the craftsmen of the Church of Steam and the Church of the Mechanics. β
Deeply disappointed, Angel picked up the brand-new revolver on the table and sighed, "Then it seems that I can only use a normal revolver, at least it is free." β
Old Neil laughed directly when he heard this: "I like young people who can make fun of suffering." β
"But in addition to extraordinary weapons, there are other simple and... Cheap ways to increase combat effectiveness. β
Seeing that Angel was a little disappointed, Old Neil still opened his mouth and added.
He reached into the pocket on the inside of his robe, pulled out a small piece of silver, and handed it over.
Angel took it and looked closely.
The silver sheet is thin, with Hermetian incantations carved on both sides and sides, a script commonly used in mystical ceremonies, with intricate texts and symbols overlapping and covering the entire surface of the silver.
Just holding it in her hand, she felt a deep, serene mystical power, as she felt when she prayed to the Goddess in the Church of the Night Goddess.
"This is the 'Sleep Charm', as long as you recite the opening spell you set, this is the 'night' in ancient Hermes, and then you can trigger it by infusing the spirit into it, and the effect is to put people nearby into a deep sleep, similar to Leonard's extraordinary abilities."
Thinking of Leonard Mitchell's ability to chant poetry and make people drowsy during the battle with Lady Sharon, Angel nodded knowingly, this should be the same origin as the "Sleepless", and may even come directly from the power of the Goddess of the Night.
This kind of pre-made spell can indeed improve a lot of combat power, because it is almost a reproduction of the extraordinary ability of a certain sequence, even if it is not lethal in itself, but when used unexpectedly, it can tilt the balance of battle that was originally evenly matched to one side in an instant.
Even if the "Sleep Charm" can't make the Extraordinary fall asleep directly, as long as it can interfere with the opponent's thinking for a second or two, it can play a great role in the battle between the Extraordinary.
"The method of making a spell is very simple, similar to the process of making a special bullet, just carve the spell into the substrate and infuse it with spirituality. They don't last long, usually only for one to two weeks, but they can be re-infused for spiritual activation after the effect expires. β
"You have experience in making special bullets, so I won't start teaching from the basics, you can take this charm, choose the materials and copy it according to the spell above to make a spell with the same effect."
"Thank you, Mr. Neil." Angel didn't expect that there would be an unexpected gain, and hurriedly thanked.
"It's just some basic occult knowledge, and it just so happens that I'm going to teach the new Mr. Crane Moretti about this, just after divination, well, you can learn it together."
Klein Moretti...... He drank potions in the nearby alchemy room this week and became an extraordinary......
Angel thought of the moment he watched the other person drink the potion that day. For the past two days, she has been busy making the "Storm Convergence" bullets, and she is always worried about whether all this is a test of her by the night watchman, and she has never seen this new neighbor again.
Bang bang β
There was a knock on the door, and both of them turned their heads at the same time, and a half-top hat and then the face of a young man with short black hair peeked out of the crack in the door.
"Sorry, I think I heard my name?"
The person who came was none other than Klein Moretti, whom Neal Sr. had just talked about.
"Ah, speaking of you, I'm going to take some time to teach you how to make charms, and Miss Granger is interested." Old Neil didn't talk about the embarrassment of being knocked through behind his back at all, "You came here to get the bullets for practice?" β
Klein had already pushed open the door and walked in, nodding his head and replying, "Yes, I'm sorry for you, Mr. Neil, it's still the same as before, thirty ordinary pistol rounds." β
"Okay, wait a minute." Old Neil got up again and went to the arsenal behind him to get the bullets.
"Practice?" Angel looked at Crane, who was standing by the door, and asked suspiciously.
The young man in a black vest and top hat explained with a smile: "The task given to me by the captain is to familiarize me with how to use a pistol as soon as possible, and I now take thirty rounds of ammunition to the shooting range every day to practice." β
Holding the brand-new revolver he had just arrived, Angel's heart moved.
"Is the shooting range nearby?"
