Chapter 19: Hannes
"Let's go back and rest, Armin, and settle everyone's wages." Ian stood at the top and said, "Tomorrow Mr. Hannes will show the watermill to everyone in the Frontier, and I hope you all can come and see it." β
The tired workers dispersed, and although they were physically tired, their eyes were no longer as deep as stagnant water, but became bright.
"That's amazing, this farm tool!"
"It's hard work, I didn't expect such an ingenious structure!"
"There will be a bumper harvest of grain this year!"
After everyone else is gone, Ian asks Mikasa to take the kids to watch the watermill and take Alan and Armin to find Hannes.
"I don't know Mr. Hannes very well, this time I have to rely on you, we must make him our spokesperson, otherwise it is impossible for us children to promote the waterwheel before the end of the spring, we have to make good use of Mr. Hannes's connections."
"Leave it to us!" Armin patted Ian on the shoulder, "I'm sure I'll convince Mr. Hannes." β
"That coward, if he doesn't dare to come, I'll beat him up!" Alan said indignantly.
Eren will never forget the scene when the giants struck and his mother was crushed under the collapsed house.
As a trained soldier, Hannes obviously has a chance to save his mother, but Hannis is a coward, and that cowardly guy doesn't have the courage to fight the giant, and Alan can only watch the giant eat his mother.
Ian put his hand on Alan's shoulder: "Don't be too impulsive, we're going to Hannes for help, let Armin talk, just stand next to you." β
Allen's personality is really not suitable for negotiating with other people, this guy is too angry, too aggressive, and easy to quarrel
Ian brought Eren to see Hannes' guilt for Alan, and he just wanted Eren to stand aside as a mascot and not make things stiff.
"I know." Alan pursed his lips: "I'm not all in a daze these days, and I won't make trouble." β
"You've grown up, too." Ian smiled, "Come on." β
...
The three of them found Hannes at the soldiers' camp on the outskirts of the frontier, a blonde, flat-headed uncle wearing the uniform of the garrison corps, who was drinking alone.
Hannes looked very decadent, he hadn't taken care of his personal hygiene in a long time, his beard had grown a lot of stubble, his hair was oily, and he was covered in the smell of wine and sweat.
"Mr. Hannes! Mr. Hannes!" Armin beckoned to Hannes.
"Arminβ" Hannes put down the bottle in his hand and said drunkly, "are you in any trouble?" β
Armin shook his head, "We have something we want Mr. Hannes to see." β
"What? Alcohol? Hannes yawned, "Do you want to drink too?" No, Armin, you're still a child. β
"Did you come to me for pocket money?" Hannes fumbled in his coat pocket and pulled out a handful of copper coins: "Take it and use it, and if anyone dares to bully you, report my name." β
Alan clenched his fist faintly when he saw Hannes's appearance, and Ian grabbed him and shook his head.
Not everyone can have the courage to face the giants, and it is understandable that Hannes escaped, and it is normal for him to degenerate into what he is now.
"I don't want your wine, Mr. Hannes." Armin waved his hand: "Anyway, come with us first, you'll understand when you see it." β
Hannes smirked, "Armin, how did you become two?" β
It wasn't until Hannes turned his head to see Alan's stiff face that he suddenly stopped laughing, and twitched as if he had seen something terrible.
"You're idle right now." Alan said coldly: "If you are very free, you will go with us." β
Hannes fell silent, and stood up at Allen's tug.
...
"So... What exactly are you trying to show us? "Hannes sobered up a bit, not knowing where Alan and Armin were going to take him.
"You'll find out when you go and see it." Alan tugged at his clothes.
In the distance, Hannes saw the wooden wheel of the wheel.
Alan takes him to the wooden wheel, and Mikasa stands next to the wooden wheel with a scarf around him, greeting Hannes, but Hannes' attention is completely drawn to the waterwheel.
"It's... What? When was it made? Why haven't I been notified? β
"It's called a waterwheel." "It's a farm tool that was only completed today, and it doesn't need manpower, it can be rotated, and the water can be brought out to irrigate the farmland," Armin said. β
"No... That's not what I meant, responsible! What about the person in charge of this thing? Where are the craftsmen? Is it support from the government?" Hannes was somewhat incoherent.
"I'm the person in charge of the watermill." Ian stood in front of Hannes.
"You?" Hannes frowned: "Go to the kid, I'm looking for someone from the government!" Are there any new policies over there? Why don't we, the soldiers, have any news? β
"It's true." Armin added: "Mr. Hannes, Ian is the person in charge of the waterwheel, from the design to the planning, to the recruitment of workers, it can be said that Ian did it all alone, without the help of the government, this is the farming tools that we gathered the carpenters of the pioneer land, in this world... I'm afraid this is the first one. β
"Alminβ" Hannes looked at Armin with a look of disbelief, "Are you even crazy?" β
"You idiot!" Alan punched Hannes in the stomach: "Forget about cowardice, are you still a fool!" β
"Take a good look! This thing is a farm tool made by a few of us children! β
...
After some explanations, when it was approaching dusk, Hannes finally believed that the waterwheel was made by Ian and others, and also understood that Ian was looking for his spokesperson.
"Are you the legendary genius?" Hannes looked at Ian's face and sat cross-legged on the ground: "This thing is really helpful for farming, I know, I'll help, tomorrow, I'll announce to the residents that the waterwheel is complete." β
"Excuse me, Mr. Hannes." Ian said with a smile.
Hannes is a simple-minded person, so he doesn't need to explain much to him, which is his strength.
Ian plans to cooperate with him step by step, and Hannes is too far away, his peanut-sized brain can't figure it out, just let him understand that it's right to follow his own pace, let him trust himself, and then Hannes will become a partner.
As Ian thought, this man was an emotional man, preferring to charge with the team rather than thinking with his brain.
As long as Hannes sees the usefulness of the waterwheel, he will come to help, he is not bad in nature, but his ability is too weak to do anything big.
But everyone has their own use, and what Ian needs most now is a spokesman like Hannes, and with Hannes, his nuclear cause has taken a big step forward.
"Please Mr. Hannes and us go to the pioneer field to spread the word, and let the inhabitants gather by the river tomorrow morning." Ian said.
"No problem." Hannes nodded, "Go now." β
Hannes was easily fooled into the team, and he didn't bother with how elaborate the structure of the waterwheel was, and where Ian and the others got the money to build the waterwheel.
He was just thinking that with this thing, the wheat would sprout quickly, so that in the autumn, everyone would have enough to eat.
