Chapter 70: None of You Are Human

The next morning, in Professor McGonagall's office, Ash submitted a paper.

Professor McGonagall opened the paper with encouragement at first, but when she saw the arguments in the paper, she looked a little surprised.

The thesis of this paper is not complicated, but it is surprising enough because it directly points to the topic in the first sentence of the card:

Wizards are closer to magical creatures than humans.

The further back she looked, the more frightened Professor McGonagall became, and she couldn't help but look up at Ash who was sitting across from her desk and asked:

"You wrote it yourself?"

"Yes."

"I consulted some of the papers and literature in the library, which are marked at the end of the papers. ”

Professor McGonagall approving:

"Not modestly, the theory you come up with is quite new, and it is not something that can be done with reference to old literature."

"As much as I can't fully agree with your idea, I can't deny the possibility of it."

Professor McGonagall paused, and her tone made no secret of her admiration for Ash:

"Most wizards have always considered them nobler than Muggles, and even in the treatises of some Bloodline Supremacists, they have tried to prove that wizards are higher beings than any other species. Instead, you're trying to separate wizards from humanity and divide them into magical races, which is the exact opposite of them. ”

"Although the idea is a bit radical, the arguments you make in your paper are really difficult to refute."

"I have one more question I'd like you to answer, though."

Ash bowed his head slightly, "Of course, I'll be happy to answer." ”

Professor McGonagall lifted her glasses and spoke:

"According to the point expressed in your paper, you divide magical creatures into two categories, non-human and humanoid.

"From sniffers and soundbirds to hippographers and Thestrals, to unicorns, dragons, and phoenixes, these are all non-human."

"And centaurs, giants, merfolk, werewolves, goblins, babies, and vampires are as humanoid as wizards."

"What are your criteria? Is it by appearance? Or high IQ? ”

McGonagall didn't hide her doubts, hoping to get answers from Ash.

"Yes, but not exactly."

Ash nodded, shook his head again, and explained:

"While it's true that there are physical considerations based on the division, the most important thing is that because of reproductive isolation, only creatures that can reproduce with humans or wizards are classified as humanoid."

Professor McGonagall pondered, "So you classify house-elves and dominatrixes as 'beasts' because they can't reproduce with wizards or humans?" ”

In fact, Ash wasn't the first to try to divide magical creatures.

In the Ministry of Magic's classification of living beings, magical creatures are usually divided into three categories: humans, beasts, and spirits.

But for centuries, the wizarding world has debated the definition of a 'human'.

In the 14th century, the Speaker of the Council of Wizards, Burdock Malden, tried to define a 'human' as any member of the wizarding world who walked on two legs, and tried to invite all the 'humans' to a summit meeting to discuss the new magical laws, and then he found that his definition was unworkable.

As the elves brought all the two-legged creatures they could find, including the Ball Bird, the Bird, the Fwerp, the Elf, the Fairy, and the Trolls, the meeting quickly became chaotic as the Trolls began smashing the hall with their short sticks.

Obviously, no one wants to admit that they are the same kind as the brainless creatures like the trolls, and the ghosts are unhappy about this, they think they are dead, how can they still be considered 'human'?

It was not until 1811 that the magical society reached an agreement to redefine 'human' and 'beast' based on the criterion of 'high intelligence'.

Muggles, wizards, elves, vampires, dominatriks, giants, house-elves, beauties, and werewolves in human form are all classified as 'humans', while most other magical creatures are 'beasts', with the exception of ghosts, which are classified as 'spirits'.

Merfolk and centaurs also belong to this class, but due to their unwillingness to share an identity with the dominatrix and vampires, they refuse to accept it, and voluntarily request to be classified as 'beasts'.

However, if you follow the definition of 'high intelligence', the eight-eyed spider, the sphinx, and the human-headed sphinx can all be classified as 'human'. So the Ministry of Magic expelled them from the camp of 'humans' and classified them as 'beasts' on the grounds that they could not overcome their ferocious nature.

There is no doubt that this criterion is not scientific.

But that's what the wizarding world is all about, and you laugh at them for not understanding science, and they laugh at you for not understanding magic.

There are even some extremists in the wizarding world who demand that Muggles be classified as 'beasts' because they consider it a shame to be 'human' with 'Muggles' - there is no doubt that these extremists are pure-bloods.

Compared to the previous rules of the Ministry of Magic, Ash's classification is significantly more scientific - in modern society, Muggles also classify species from a scientific point of view, using reproductive isolation as one of the bases for judgment.

But here's the problem.

Although Ash's division is 'scientific', the most unacceptable thing in the wizarding world is Muggle science!

What is science? Does magic work?

What's more, although Ash's division looks much the same as before, its essence is very different.

The previous division of the Ministry of Magic was based on 'magic' as the sole basis.

Therefore, if there is a division of the status of all 'people', it should be:

Wizards> Eva> vampires> goblins> giants> werewolves> house-elves > Muggles.

Muggles who can't do magic have an even lower status than house-elves in the eyes of many wizards!

That's why some extremists demand that 'Muggles' be classified as 'beasts', because in their opinion, 'Muggles' are even inferior to 'beasts' - what can 'Muggles' provide magic materials for wizards?

However, Ash's classification of magical creatures is based on 'humans'. And this 'man' is not a 'wizard', but a 'Muggle' who is looked down upon by most wizards. So even 'wizards' are only classified as 'human-like', not 'human'!

Isn't that just saying that 'Muggles' are nobler than 'wizards'?

When the other wizards saw this, their first reaction was definitely to be furious:

Heterodox! Death to the master!

In Ash's paper, the statement of high emotional intelligence is shocking, and the statement of low emotional intelligence is 'Don't be spicy, don't splash blood on me!' ’。

If it were the Middle Ages, this treatise would have been enough to burn Ash at the stake.

And even if they can't be burned at the stake, some extreme wizards don't mind swiping a few rockets at Ash β€” the green one.

Ash knew this, of course, but he dared to show it because he knew better what Professor McGonagall was up to.

Professor McGonagall was a half-breed herself, having admired her Muggle father since she was a child and had fallen in love with another Muggle.

However, she knew that once she married a Muggle, she would have to abide by the Secrecy Act, give up her identity as a witch, and never use magic again. But she couldn't give up her ambitions in the wizarding world, and had no choice but to break up with the Muggle.

As such, Professor McGonagall is not the usual anti-Muggle in wizarding circles, but rather a staunch pro-Muggle.

So when she saw Ash's paper, she would sincerely praise it. Even if you see the content of Muggle as a benchmark and classifying wizards as 'humanoid', although it is shocking, it will not be particularly resistant.

Such an attitude is not surprising, after all, Ash wrote this paper to his likingβ€”at least in the first half.

When Professor McGonagall saw the second half of the paper, her expression of relief, she immediately became serious. Compared to the first half, which is only unconventional in the division of magical creatures, the second half is directly focused on the essence of magical creatures - magic!
