Chapter 63: Advice to the Taussy Family
At the dinner table, Dan seemed a little absent-minded.
Jamie only gives him a day to think about it.
Because the day after tomorrow, the Taussy couple will take Big Michael to end their trip to Chicago and return to New York.
In the next seat, Rufus and Jamie chatted happily about basketball.
Like many New Yorkers, Rufus loves the atmosphere of watching a game at Madison Square Garden, but there are two places where he can't help but complain.
One is that the Knicks' results are so bad, and the ticket price is embarrassed to sell the most expensive in the league.
It's no wonder that New Yorkers are always ridiculed by fans elsewhere for being stupid and having more money.
The other is a big ball city like New York, which can fully accommodate multiple NBA teams.
According to Rufus, he wished that there would be an NBA team in each of the New York districts, so that whichever team did well would be supported by the team.
Jamie joked with Rufus about the possibility that fans in New York didn't really care about the team's performance, and they just bought tickets to go to an NBA game.
Otherwise, the Nets, who moved from New Jersey to Brooklyn in the future, are obviously much better than the Knicks in terms of team and owner's motivation, including several seasons.
But the Nets still don't sell as well as the Knicks' tickets, and the team's market value looks like the Knicks, who are far ahead, and they can't reach it.
The fundamental reason is that there is only one Manhattan in New York.
During this time, Dan received a text message on his mobile phone and temporarily left the table for a while.
Soon after he came back and sat down, Jamie, Jenny, and Collins all received a breaking text message on their mobile phones at the same time.
Serena and Blair officially broke up, and quickly formed a new girlfriend alliance with Rebecca, and someone took a photo of the two eating together at a high-end vegetarian restaurant in Manhattan.
After putting down the phone, Jenny looked at Jamie, who looked like usual at the table.
She actually wanted to ask Jamie what was going on with Serena, Rebecca, and Blair, the three girls in the school.
This is related to the question of which small circle Jenny will move closer to in the future.
Judging from the current situation alone, Serena and Rebecca have teamed up to basically announce Blair's "loss of power" in school.
But the friendship between girls is like this, one second it is as good as glue, and the next second it can turn over and tear up.
What if Serena suddenly reconciles with Blair later?
Before Jenny could figure out how to speak, Collins, who was beside her, suddenly asked Jamie a question.
"Will you continue to invite Blair to your party this weekend?"
Jamie shrugged and said that the party invitation had already been sent out, and he didn't know if Blair would come by then.
Clearly, that's not really the question Collins wants to ask.
But at the dinner table, she could only ask so much.
After dinner, Jamie and Collins said goodbye together.
The two didn't go the same way, but Collins quickly caught up with Jamie, who was about to reach out to stop the car.
"Need me to call a ride for you?"
"You haven't answered that question from my party last night, why the hell are you helping our family?"
Collins put on a posture of not giving up without asking for an answer, which made Jamie speechless.
"So you still think your parents' motives for adopting Big Michael were impure and resist it?"
Collins nodded earnestly.
"At first, my mom just thought Michael was pitiful and decided to help him from time to time, until one time Michael showed his athletic talent, and their attitude changed."
Collins remembers very well that her father, Mr. Tausy, half-jokingly and half-seriously, said that if Michael could join his alma mater, Tennessee State University, to play football, he would definitely help the team achieve better results.
Mrs. Taussy had a thoughtful expression on her face.
Then it wasn't long before Mrs. Tausy officially announced her intention to adopt Big Michael as the family was eating.
Mr. Taussi immediately agreed, and it was clear that the couple had communicated the matter beforehand.
"Maybe they really just wanted to send a good rugby player to their alma mater?"
Jamie asked rhetorically.
Collins hesitated for less than two seconds before finally deciding to tell Jamie the truth.
"You said that this possibility only existed before my father's restaurant chain went wrong, and although he has now sold the restaurant, he actually lost a lot of money, which I learned about when I overheard them talking once."
"One of the reasons my family moved from Memphis to New York was because my mom thought that only by working as a designer in New York could I make more money."
"Now it seems that she made the right decision, but compared to the high cost of living in New York, our family is actually no better off than before."
"That's why they decided to let Big Michael switch to basketball, because NBA players are more profitable."
Having said all this, Collins just wants to tell Jamie that her parents have now treated Big Michael as an investment, and she doesn't agree with what her parents do, and hopes that Jamie won't become an accomplice to her parents.
For the sake of her honesty, Jamie put down his right hand that was about to stop the car, and decided to teach this innocent and lovely girl a good lesson.
"While I'm grateful for you to say these things to me, I don't think there's anything wrong with your parents' decision, and if they don't adopt Big Michael, maybe Big Michael will eventually get ahead, but there's no doubt that the process will be more difficult and tortuous."
"It's more likely that he will be stuck in that quagmire in the slums for the rest of his life, and all his talent will be wasted."
"From this point of view, the fact that your parents were able to choose Michael Jr. shows that they really have a good vision, and this time supporting Michael Jr. to choose his own preferred basketball also proves that, after all, the probability of success for Michael Jr. to continue playing football is definitely higher than supporting him to switch to basketball, isn't it?"
"I'm not going to stop your parents from doing what they do, I just want them to take a long-term view and invest more real feelings in Big Michael, rather than expecting much in return from Big Michael in the first place."
"Because Big Michael will grow up one day and realize that your parents' purpose for adopting him is not simple, but it doesn't matter, as long as Big Michael believes that becoming a family with you is the most beneficial choice for him now and in the future, your family and his trust relationship can be maintained forever."
As he spoke, a yellow taxi pulled up in front of the two of them.
Jamie put Collins in the car and finally told her through the window:
"Trust me, it's good for everyone!"
