6. The cost of deviance
The next morning, before six o'clock, the neon lights that had been flashing all night in the city temporarily stopped, and the sky of Las Vegas was already clouded.
Dean got up from the living room couch, looked at his 18/100 martial arts proficiency after half a night, smiled contentedly, woke up his friend in bed, and quickly finished washing.
The two went downstairs with their cameras and school bags on their backs, and made some purchases at the department store near the apartment, but Dean had no money and had to borrow a few dollars from Rust.
"Man, is this tin can delicious, how come I've never heard of it?"
Rust chewed a hot dog full of sausages, and watched curiously as his friend stuffed a disc-shaped can of fish into his school bag, with question marks written on his face.
"It's not for food," Dean smiled mysteriously, "It's a strategic deterrent weapon, and I bought it specifically for your self-defense." β
Dean patted Rust's school bag,
In this era, the flow of information was far less than that of later generations, and except for the Dutch and Swedish producers, not many people knew about the power of biochemical cans.
"Hide it, if someone bullies you again, you can hold your breath and open the can and splash him! He will definitely remember it vividly, and he will take a detour to see you from now on. β
Rust's eyes lit up,
"But why do you hold your breath when you open it?"
"You'll know when you use it."
β¦β¦
Afterwards, the two went back to the neighborhood of Dean's house first.
More than 100 meters away from the community, I saw an SUV police car parked outside the courtyard from a distance.
A tall Las Vegas Cop in a khaki police uniform, with a pistol and baton on his waist, was questioning a neighbor on the side of the road, and the LVPD badge on his chest flashed gold.
"At about half past three in the morning, 'Tarzan' suddenly screamed wildly, waking me up from my sleep, and I saw from the window that across the road, the lights were on in little Dean's house." A fat woman holding a black teddy said with trepidation, "Three masked and hooded men were swinging crowbars frantically and smashing them, and the loud sound almost scared me to a heart attack, and one of them was carrying a gun. God, they're crazy! β
"Nine times out of ten, it's Kuipa's trouble up north, and that Indian hasn't been a peaceful guy! It's okay now, and it affects his nephew. β
A denim jacket, a man with long hands and feet chattered,
"Shut up, racist!"
A man who was more than one meter nine tall, with a thick white beard like aquatic plants, and an appearance similar to Hagrid in Harry Potter shook his head and retorted,
"None of the Vegas gang members are dressed like this, I think it's a robber who came in by accident. If I hadn't worked the night shift, I'd have shot them all. β
An old woman with gray hair said happily,
"Luckily, Paqui is working in the field, and little Dean doesn't know where to go... Otherwise, the consequences are unimaginable. β
"Look, little Dean is back!"
β¦β¦
"Mr. Officer, this is my house, I want to go and see it first!"
Dean, who received Cop's nod, walked past his neighbor and went straight into the house.
The carpet in the hall was cut into dozens and hung in a haphazard manner on the tables, ceilings, chandeliers, and handrails of the stairs
The floor is full of chairs, cabinets... Strips of wood dismantled from furniture...
Kettle, toaster in the kitchen... They were all sunken and trampled, the black, heavy televisions were shattered, glassware was strewn all over the floor, and all the windows around the hall were smashed by profit.
The neat room was unrecognizable, and the floor was full of unsightly tatters and dirt, as if it had been washed away by a storm.
A row of kitchen knives are stuck in cupboards, with insulting words written in red paint.
βchingchong!β
βget out of my country!β
Seeing this, Dean felt a deep fear, if he was at home yesterday, what would have happened?
Paralysis? Or burp?
He didn't think that the three-legged cat fighting technique he had just practiced for a short time could deal with three men with weapons and firearms.
β¦β¦
"You stayed at my house last night because you expected this to happen? You're really a god! β
Rust looked excitedly at his companions and roared,
"But how dare that bastard Bob do this?"
It's just a fight, but he sent someone to destroy my home?
Dean strode up the stairs to the second floor, the wooden steps were so many pieces that he almost didn't fall.
The scene on the second floor was even worse.
The wooden door was kicked out of several large black holes, revealing the rough wood inside. The wall skin and wallpaper have been pulled off, and they have become full of holes and have no beauty at all.
Dean in his bedroom, with large red letters written on the window - "kill you", "jerk", "stupid guy"
There is hardly a single thing intact.
The treasured horror novels, textbooks, and Star Wars posters were all torn to shreds, and the broken pages were like white snowflakes spread in the ruins.
And originally on the bedside table.
The family portrait was taken out of the frame, and the three men in the photo were split in half starting from their waists, leaving only half of their bodies.
Dean hurriedly searched for it, but unfortunately he couldn't find the top half.
The predecessor, the only memorial to the missing parents, is gone.
Dean held the photo, covered his face, and fell into a deep guilt - he replaced the other party's body, but he failed to protect the other party's most precious things.
"I was wrong, I should have gone home first and took the photos."
"Dude... Don't be too sad. Let's go talk to COP and ask him to catch those bastards! β
Dean shook his head, took a deep breath, calmed his restlessness, and cherished the photo in his bag.
β¦β¦
"I'm Officer Marvin Manson of LVPD, and I ask for your cooperation in answering some questions."
"Hmm." Di An'an was cold, there was no doubt that this matter had nothing to do with Bob, he didn't expect the other party to really dare to do it.
It's even more faintly afraid.
The energy and viciousness of the rich children of Las Vegas exceeded their expectations.
"Have you offended anyone recently or had a dispute with anyone?"
"A baseball stadium operator."
COP stared at him expressionlessly,
"Bob Lowe."
Dean emphasized,
"His father owned several casinos and theaters, and he had a group of thugs as his subordinates, so there was a high probability of committing crimes!"
"It is only after the investigation that there is a conclusion." Cop's face was indifferent, and he said in a businesslike tone, "Are there any valuables lost at home?" Or a lot of cash"
"The most valuable thing is the TV, it's broken..."
"Is there anyone else living in the house but you and Paqui?"
"Nope."
COP asked a few more questions about how he was getting along with his neighbors, and after about half an hour, he scribbled a sentence and drove away, and Dean asked him how long it would be time to get news and he didn't answer.
"Isn't this professional at all? Don't you wear gloves when you go into the house and take pictures for evidence? β
"There were no dead people, no valuables were lost, and there were too many small cases like this every day to count. COP may not be too careful. Rust shook his head,
"Boys, it's too remote to contribute much to taxes," the bearded man came over with the gray-haired woman, "and he'll probably start taking on another case in the city right away." β
"May the Lord bless you." The woman drew a cross on her chest, "Poor little Dean, it's okay to be fine." Don't get your hopes up, in my experience, there will probably be no follow-up to this case. A few hundred dollars in losses is inevitable. But don't worry, we've got you in touch with your uncle Paqui and we'll be back this afternoon. β
Dean looked gratefully at the two enthusiastic neighbors.
"Thanks... Thank you... Uncle Jacob, Aunt Donya. β
Unlike his memories of school, he vaguely remembered the two neighbors.
Jacob worked with Uncle Paqui.
Grandma Tang Ya has a gentle personality and has always liked the well-behaved and sensible Dean.
"Little Dean, in the past few months, you have been busy studying and falling in love, and you have not come to Jacob's house as a guest, when will you come to try my barbecue skills."
The bearded man laughed,
Dean thought he was just joking.
"You go to class first, and we'll help you clean up the house. Don't be thankful, we've been neighbors for more than a decade. β
