198. Carly
On the morning of September 10th, Dean left the reluctant Catherine, spent a thousand dollars to purchase some ammunition from Paqui's outdoor store to fill the ammunition magazine, and drove Bronco north out of Hawkinstown.
It's autumn, and the residual heat of summer hasn't completely dissipated, but the temperature in north-central Indiana is starting to drop significantly, and the wind outside the windows of speeding cars is extremely cold.
However, Dean's physical fitness is far from human, listening to country music in the cold breeze, chewing chocolate hard candy, driving the car, and the information he has learned flashed in his mind.
Situated just north of Polis, Indiana's capital, West Lafayette is not too far from the town of Hawkins, and can be reached in half a day by car.
Covering an area of only 14.3 square kilometers, which is the size of a small town, this small city is home to the famous Purdue University and Purdue Research Park, so it is infused with vigor and vitality.
β¦β¦
Dean's journey went very smoothly, and he didn't encounter any bloody road homicides along the way, and at half past two in the afternoon, he drove into the area where Purdue University is located.
It's like a university town in later generations, but it's more open, with small, collegiate-style low-rise buildings flanking the wide, flat roads, and red-walled spires and yellow-glowing oak trees on the outside.
At the beginning of September, shortly after the opening of Purdue University, many parents who had sent their children to report could be seen on the roadside shuttling between the beautiful buildings to take pictures.
Dean pulled over to a mobile hot dog cart outside the school gate and bought a few hot dogs to fill his hunger, and across from him, young students kept coming in and out of the gate made of white stone piers and black vaults.
The students were dressed up in a fashionable way, with denim with lapel liners, sexy tank tops and leather jackets, baggy jeans and striped shirts, padded shoulder coats and fluffy hairstyles... The strong atmosphere of the times is coming.
It looks like Dean is a little younger.
β¦β¦
But he didn't come for a trip this time, so he opened his "bloody mouth" and swallowed the last hot dog, patted off the food scraps on his hands, took out the newspaper with Carly's childhood photo No. 8 and read it several times, firmly remembered her thin and swarthy image, put on sunglasses and closed his eyes, and entered the dark realm of his mind again.
Flowing darkness squeezed the light, and Dean returned to the familiar pitch black space.
A faint white light stretched out not far in front of him, and two figures stood side by side.
"To the west, it's not far away."
β¦β¦
To the west of Purdue University, outside a labyrinthine alley, beside clumps of emerald tulip trees.
A stout middle-aged black man in a jacket is whispering to a chubby Indian girl in a black leather jacket and leather pants with long slanted punk hair.
One of them was tall and rude, the other was short and strangely dressed, like a combination of a wild boar and a fox.
"Carly, how long will it take to act?" The big black man patted his thick chest and said angrily, "According to me, you just used your ability to build a group of anti-terrorist units to come out, scare those bastards out of the air, and then I rushed in to rescue Mick... Rest assured, with me in front, no one will get hurt. β
"It's not going to work, there are too many people out there, and I'm limited enough to affect everyone's vision. When the time comes, someone will find out that something is wrong, and they will inevitably use their guns... Fang Shan... You're strong, but you're not steely, and you'll have to go to God even if you get shot,"
Carly softly persuaded,
"We'd better wait for a chance when they go back to the abandoned factory club to give bulk goods to college students, and then sneak in and rescue Mick, and rob them of their money by the way."
"With the money, we can leave Indiana and go to Illinois to have a good time."
"Who knows how long it will take for them to pick up their next delivery?" The black strong man gasped for breath in his nose, and his eyes were red with distress, "How much torture will Mick be subjected to for such a long time?" β
"Be patient, man, and when our team grows, we'll pay back the pain they inflicted on Mick tenfold." Carly's eyes shot a ferocity that did not belong to this age, and her immature and hoarse voice exuded a knife-like coldness, "If you hurt our companions, you must pay the price of blood!" β
After the cruel words.
Carly's gaze suddenly turned to the other side of the road, and an Asian man in a big black trench coat was waving to them, with a hint of joy in his heroic face under his short black hair, and his frighteningly bright eyes looked straight at the two.
"Hey, Carly?!"
He strode with a shout, broad shoulders swaying gently with his footsteps, the fine muscle outline of his khaki t-shirt.
"Shet!" Carly felt a great pressure and a faint sense of familiarity, "Fang Shan, do you know this Asian?" β
The big black man tilted his head in confusion and pinched his thick knuckles, "I don't know, he seems to be coming towards us, is he the group of miscellaneous accomplices?" β
Carly took a deep breath and looked at the Asian man and turned her fingers slightly, her brain racing wildly, weaving a phantom scene of a heavy truck pulling twenty tons of cargo rumbling across the road and stopping in front of the man.
The release was repeated countless times, and in less than half a second, Carly threw the woven scene into the Asian man's eyes.
But then she was stunned.
The man who was walking briskly across the road casually glanced at the "Phantom Truck", then turned around and ran towards them without changing his face.
Walk faster.
Completely ignoring the effects of the illusion.
"Fako! Something is wrong, Fang Shan, this guy is not hit, he is not an ordinary person! Come on! Carly involuntarily took a few steps back, the first time since escaping Hawkins' lab that she had encountered a superpower failure, and she was caught off guard.
"You run first, I'll break back!" The big black man stared at the Asian man with a pair of brass bell-like eyes.
He's going to crash and crush the obstacles that stand in his way, freeing up all his companions to protect him!
Click-ta-ta!
Fang Shan's footsteps shook the road, the fat and muscles under his clothes swayed layer by layer, he rushed out of the road like a grumpy wild boar in one breath, rushed to the Asian man who was half a head shorter than himself and had half a waist circumference, and stretched out his hand to push!
Bang!
The two figures slammed into each other.
The Asian man paused, then moved on.
And Fang Shan felt that he had crashed into a high-speed train, his eyes were dark, and his huge body was knocked backwards and flew backwards for five meters before sitting on the ground.
Poof!
Dusty.
His buttocks were in sharp pain as if they were cracking, and his whole body was sore and limp, and he couldn't get up for a while.
The Asian man's footsteps were so fast that he almost dragged out the afterimage, and in one breath, he chased Carly who ran away on her short legs, and reached out and grabbed her shoulder.
"Carly, stop, I'm not hostile."
"Let go! Don't touch me! β
Furious and horrified, Carly pulled an M1911 out of her tattered leather jacket and turned to point her gun at the man's head.
Then there was a flash in front of her, and for some reason, her gun suddenly came into the man's handβclick, click...
The man's hands were ten commands, and the eyes danced dazzlingly.
Two seconds later, with a series of cacophony of metal scraping, M1911 disintegrated into a pile of shredded parts that landed at Carly's feet.
Grunt.
Carly was dumbfounded, and obediently raised her hands.
β¦β¦
Soon after, on a remote green lawn.
The big black man and the Indian girl sat honestly on the ground with their heads folded.
Let Dean look at it.
Carly has transformed from a young little girl in the newspaper photo into a teenager, with a long face, thin lips, big eyes, and a much more mature appearance and temperament than Jane, eye shadow and oblique punk hair, which makes her a little more rebellious than ordinary girls, but her appearance is the same as Jane, with characteristics, but not beautiful.
"Relax, both, if I tried to hurt you, you're lying in a coffin by now. I'm just going to ask you a few questions. β
"Shouldn't this gentleman introduce himself before asking someone a question?" Carly looked up at him, and moved her feet closer to the big man beside her like a duck, as if seeking refuge.
"I'm Dean, a private detective from Hawkinstown, and I know that you were locked up in the Hawkins lab for a long time for human experimentation, and you were hurt, left with countless painful memories, and possessed the superpower of illusion. But in 1978, you escaped from the lab, and if I guessed correctly, you had the number 008 branded on your wrist. Dean said,
Carly tugged at her sleeve to cover her wrist further, "I've never heard of a lab. β
"Man, you've mistaken someone." The black man shielded the girl like a calf, his eyes gloomy as water, "Carly escaped from the orphanage. β
"Don't deny it, listen to me," Dean shook his head, staring into the girl's eyes, "I also know that the couple who helped you escape from the lab in the first place are named Lena and Light. β
Carly's pupils shrank when she heard this, and her face flashed with surprise, "I don't understand what you mean. β
"Frankly, they are my long-missing parents, and I have been searching for them but there is no clue." Dean added a touch of sincerity to his tone, "But you must know something when you escaped from the lab with them, right?" Please tell me all. β
Carly furrowed her brows, and carefully examined Dean's face with heavy eyeshadow eyes, gradually revealing surprise and hesitation, this face was indeed similar to Uncle Guangming's face that had led her to escape, only much more handsome.
But in the past three years, she has seen all the ugliness in the world, and she will not easily trust anyone, "It's a pity, I can't help you, I don't remember these two names." β
Dean smiled unremittingly and changed the subject, "So you know Number 11?" You trained together as a kid in the Hawkins Lab and lived in a room with rainbows painted on the walls... She has telekinesis and a sixth sense. β
Carly's eyes flickered for a moment, and the warmth of memories flashed across her swarthy face, and the big black man opened his mouth slightly like a bear at the sight of this, he had never seen his companion show such an expression.
"Number 11 is your good sister." Dean followed, "I've got her out of the lab and moved to another safe place, and she's living a normal life. But she always missed you, thought you were destined to be together, and repeatedly told me to take you back. If you want, we'll be on your way right away. β
"The life of ordinary people?" Carly seemed to be stimulated, so she didn't look over her head and sneered, with a hint of sarcasm on her face, "How is that possible?" Normal children can play with their peers, read, go to school, and can show and develop their talents and talents. But is number 11 okay? You're allowing her to show off her superpowers at will? β
In the face of questioning, Dean was very happy, "It seems that you have not had a good time in the past three years of escape, and you should also understand that you cannot completely become the same as normal people." Because supernatural powers can bring both convenience and trouble. It's both a talent and a curse. β
Both a talent and a curse?
Carly looked at the green grass and nodded.
Dean continued, "No. 11 has been able to develop her abilities rationally under our arrangement, learn how to hide and use them, and by the way, accompany her mother, Tyri, to enjoy a warm family life. β
Dean looked at Carly's increasingly expressional expression and asked,
"Do you want to be reunited with your parents?"
"Parents?" Carly clenched her fists, her expression became subtle, and her eyes looked at the air with an empty look, neither joy nor hatred, only cold and strange, "Since they sold me to Martin Brenner, I have nothing to do with them anymore!" β
"I'm sorry, I didn't know there was such an inside story."
"It's not too late to know." Carly changed her words, "If you really rescued 11 and let her out of pain, it would be very happy." But what you say is so nice, are you lying? You have to prove that you are the same person as us before I can meet your requirements. β
Dean raised an eyebrow, "What kind of person?" β
"A different kind of outlier." Carly stood up suddenly, and circled around Dean with her hands behind her back like a little adult, "Either marginal people who are used, abandoned, hurt, or expelled by society... Or..."
The big black man interrupted her suddenly, his thick palms clasped together in front of his chest, looked at Dean and said seriously, "Carly used her illusion ability to save my life and heal my heart, so I am her shield, and if you want to hurt her, you must go over my corpse." β
Carly slashed at her companion with emotion, "Fang, don't be so sensational. β
"It's from the heart."
"Two, I never intended to hurt you, but I'm not a marginal person." Dean asked, "What's next?" β
Carly smiled, "Either you're a monster like me!" β
"Why do you call yourself a monster?"
"Because I can easily restore the deep fear in most people's hearts with visions, and make them fear me like monsters."
"So the superpowers?" Dean nodded, "I'm immune to your illusion ability, my physical fitness is not bad, it's no problem to solve a few square flashes, is it a monster?" Carly's illusion of reality turns into a crappy 3D projection in front of Dean 18.6's will, which can be seen through at a glance.
The big guy next to him listened darkly, and his face turned red.
"Of course." The corners of Carly's mouth curled slightly, and there was a hint of cunning in her eyes, "But you still have to prove that you have to help us get someone out." β
"I knew it wasn't going to be that easy," Dean unexpectedly pulled out a strawberry-flavored twisted candy, threw it into his mouth, and looked at the afternoon sky, "Save whom?" I said okay, I don't like to implicate innocent people. β
"Those guys weren't a good thing either," Carly explained, "they peddled poisonous weeds to Purdue students, robbed and blackmailed Lafayette, collected protection money, and kidnapped another of our fellow Mick... Well... A smart and clever black girl. β
"Your companions are all black?" Dean asked,
"No way, after I tried so hard to escape, most of the white people discriminated against me, disliked me, and were unwilling to give me a cookie, and only blacks reached out to me." Carly said solemnly, "I'm not black, but my skin is as deep as theirs. β
Dean asked, "Why was Mick kidnapped?" β
Carly had a bitter look on her face, "To be honest, I originally wanted to use my ability to eat black, but I overturned and affected her. β
Dean couldn't believe that such a teenage girl was so angry that she wanted to eat a gang, "You're not kidding? β
"Is it hard to understand?" Carly looked Dean in the eye and said word by word, "Marginal people like us have to be ruthless enough to suppress the evil of others!" β
β¦β¦

"Listen, Carly, I'll have no problem helping you, but after the matter is done, in addition to telling me the clues about Lena and Light, you also have to go back to Hawkins and meet with 11, do you have to make a deal?" Dean held out his hand to Carly,
Carly and Big Black looked at each other and shook Dean's hand, "We're up for sure!" β
