Chapter 40: No Faith
The wide open space in the center of Jumu Town was already crowded with people at this time.
Directly opposite the temple of Zeus, the king of the gods, a temporary wooden platform has been erected. This was supposed to be for theatrical performances that had already ended, but at this point it was expanded again with a few more rows of seats on it.
Ender's performance requires only one person, but the judgment of the unbelievers gathers all the beings of the town with a certain status. The priests of the Temple of the Law are undoubtedly at the forefront, and they will be the ones who will give the results of this judgment.
However, the referee should not be off, so it is actually the other people who are seated who really reprimand the untrustworthy.
At this time, half of the people were already sitting in front of the tables and chairs on the high platform. They talked and laughed with each other in a relaxed atmosphere, and they didn't pay any attention to what happened afterward, after all, the outcome of this trial was self-evident.
Human beings were created by God, the Creator is still on earth, and the blessings of the gods are real, and they really can't think of what kind of words the unbeliever will use to exonerate himself.
It's not so much a trial as a recreation. Because of that theater master, the newly built town of Jumu has recently gathered a large number of foreign populations. Therefore, holding an event in the name of God on the grounds of judging the unbelievers is what the priests of the temple were so keen on.
They had even figured out what to do with the poor fellow in advance - so that he would serve the temple for the rest of his life. Anyway, there was no death penalty for humans at this time, and the gods didn't say anything about what they wanted to do to the unbelievers, and most importantly, the guy didn't have time to do anything blasphemous in the true sense of the word.
He's currently behaving more like a fool who has gone mad all of a sudden, though everyone who comes into contact with him thinks he's a good guy.
"So what did the unbeliever do, that he refused to offer sacrifices to the gods?"
Standing in the crowd below the high platform, Cohen relied on his excellent physique and sense of balance to stand on an irregular boulder. Here, everything on the high platform is in full view.
"Not really, although there are some ungodly ones who do it, but the unbeliever is different."
Holding Cohen's sleeve firmly, Evans was now standing on top of the boulder. The surface of the stone was smooth, and without Cohen, he felt like he could fall at any moment.
However, in addition to being nervous, Evans is a little excited, which is why he chose to stay on it.
"It is said that the unbeliever is not against sacrificing to the gods, he is only against it—believing in the gods, which is what he seems to say, and that's why we call him 'the unbeliever.'"
"But then again, isn't sacrificing to God believing in God, I don't quite understand his thoughts anyway. There are so many people gathered here today, in fact, many of them are ready to come to see his jokes. Everyone wants to hear how he was both 'sacrificial' and 'unfaithful'. ”
Nodding his head, relying on his extraordinary hearing, Cohen gradually learned what was going on from the communication of the people around him while talking to Evans.
The reason why the unbeliever was arrested was not because he had done some direct blasphemy or refused to sacrifice, but on the contrary, he behaved like no one else.
He would regularly go to the temple to offer sacrifices, and he was never dissatisfied with the priests, in fact, the only thing he did was openly question the nobility of the gods in Giant Wood Town.
He believed that sacrifice and faith were different. Sacrifice represents an acknowledgment of God's power, while faith represents an acknowledgment of God's spirit. But the unbeliever felt that on the spiritual level, God and man were equal, and that there was no faith between equal beings.
Therefore, while offering sacrifices to the gods, he also said that he did not approve of the rules of conduct of the gods, and that he did not believe in the gods because of the difference in strength, and because of spiritual equality.
It is difficult to directly judge his guilt for such behavior, after all, his unbelief is only applied to unjudgmental thoughts, and his actual behavior is blameless. So the priests decided to pass a judgment in which all the onlookers would decide the fate of the unbelievers.
At least until now, that's what they're saying and thinking.
"There is no need to think about it, just the lies of an ignorant man. The Creator has been striving for perfection in creating bodies for us, but that's not all, and there are always a few people like this who are not very smart. ”
With a wave of his hand, Evans looked left and right, it was the first time he had stood on such a high place. Suddenly, he seemed to have discovered something,
"Here, you see, that's the unbeliever, I thought he would be guarded, but I didn't expect him to come by himself."
"I'll see."
In search of prestige, Cohen is preparing to recognize someone. In that direction, a young man dressed in black with a very friendly smile was walking in the direction of the high platform. Walking on the road, he even has time to say hello to others.
However, it was such a young man who made Cohen's spirit tense instantly.
At the same time, as if sensing Cohen's gaze, the guy he was watching also looked at him. Not far away, the two people looked at each other from a distance.
"The unbeliever you're talking about, isn't that the guy in black?"
The tone remained the same, but the power was already circulating in the body. The young man dressed in black was handsome and had a gentle smile, not at all like the rumored 'stupid' unbeliever. But in him, Cohen felt a faint sense of threat.
In addition to this, there is a negative emotion to the extreme.
"It's him, what, you've seen him before?"
As if sensing the change in Cohen's attitude, Evans on the side couldn't help but ask.
"I don't know, by the way, do you know what his name is?"
Since discovering the other party, Cohen's gaze has not been taken away. It's a dangerous person, but he doesn't want to do anything with the other party here if he can. After all, an existence that can make him feel a hint of threat, even if the other party is not his opponent, the traces of the battle between the two sides are enough to easily destroy this town.
But obviously, Evans on the side didn't know what kind of characters the one next to him and the unbeliever in the distance were. He and everyone in the town are also hovering on the line of life and death.
"Name, his name is a bit awkward, let me think-"
After a moment's thought, Evans affirmed:
"Mephistopheles, or Mephisto? It's pretty much the same anyway, who knows. ”
"Now that the Lord has come, the judgment must have begun. I hope this guy won't be defenseless in front of the priests, but at least say something, don't you think that's the truth? ”
Cohen didn't reply. He had just come to the human tribe and bumped into such a special guy head-on, and he didn't know if it was a coincidence or something.
But I have to say that listening to Evans's words, Cohen couldn't help but have some expectations for the trial after a while, while being vigilant.
Although I don't know why such a dangerous guy would come to be 'judged', but the reality is that Cohen will not have to get to the bottom of it. But what kind of statement will a guy with such a strong negative emotion give to faith and gods?
In this regard, Cohen, who has been seeking answers all the way, still wants to know.
