Section 4: Planning
The victory gave Scar months to recuperate. It was absolutely necessary, because it was a full month before he could walk out of his room on crutches.
As he walked out of the door, he realized that his neighbor had changed. Before he had fought the Desert Leopard, he had already learned that the next-door neighbor, Scar, had forgotten what the other person's name was, and of course, it didn't make much sense to remember it. Because every day there are so many names that disappear altogether β unfortunately gone forever.
This row of rooms is a special room of the gladiatorial academy, and all of them are single rooms. According to customary parlance, this is the so-called "grand seat", and only gladiators who have survived enough games will be able to get a place here. There are not so many rules of discipline and management, and there are no armed guards patrolling all the time. In fact, there was only one rather elderly guard. And the work of this guard, as we all know, has nothing to do with vigilance. His job is to provide high-end dining and other indulgences to the residents.
However, like the other rooms of the Gladiatorial Academy, guests here usually don't stay long.
"Hey, Scar. When he walked through the next room, he found an acquaintance inside.
Lacey walked out. Scar remembers the man who called himself "Knight".
"It looks like he's recovering well. I saw it all, and you could defeat that desert leopard...... Honestly, it's quite an achievement. β
"It's not an honorable thing. Scar replied coldly.
"Maybe not honorable, but it's also remarkable and admirable...... Well, why don't you come into my room and sit down?"
Scar walked into Lacey's room on crutches, who closed the door.
"To be honest, I'm glad to see you survive. Zhilu said no, you were almost chosen by the queen. β
"Queen?"
"Queen of Callean, Jean Heart. The ancestor of the vampire family. Lacey poured two glasses of wine and handed Scar one.
"If you can take down the desert leopard that day without incidentβI mean you don't have to be so badly wounded and fall straight to the gladiatorial arenaβthe Queen of Lyrehearts will most likely take a fancy to you and turn you into a vampire. β
Scar held the wine glass and didn't answer, just looked at Lacey suspiciously.
"In fact, on that day, it was the Queen of the Piano Heart who watched the game in that grand seat. Don't ask me what I know about this, I have my own news channels. Come, take a sip, this is my favorite sour plum wine. Or the hell of Callean, the only wine I can see. β
Scar took a small sip, and the wine tasted sour, which was really not good. But it's not the fault of the wine, it's that he doesn't like to drink by nature. Even if you drink it, you will drink some fruit-made sweet wine, and the sweetness is greater than the flavor of wine.
"For what, the queen of vampires will ......"
"Because she desperately needs her men right now. Lacey interrupted Scar. "The war is still going on, and it's too early to end. β
Drinking the sour plum wine, Scar felt the same bitterness rise over his heart. He thought of the old man, of the great battle, of many things he didn't want to remember.
"Kalean is still winning. But their end was already doomed. The undead legion, which Callean was proud of, suffered heavy losses and was greatly reduced in number. The vampires who commanded the undead legions, especially the Blood Knights, suffered even more casualties, reportedly losing at least half of them. β
"You said earlier that the Queen of Lyrehearts can turn humans into vampires. β
"Yes, but it has to be the right person. The vampire seems to be proud and absolutely refuses to accept an unqualified compatriot. If you can defeat the Desert Leopards that day unscathed, they'll probably accept you. β
"Shouldn't I be honored?"
"If I were you, I would feel so. Good thing you weren't chosen, though. Transform into a blood-feeding monster, then join the Blood Knights, only to die in a battle by a sword, musket, or cannon...... That's certainly not a good ending, and you won't like it. β
"Why are you talking to me about this?"
"Probably because I'm also from Ryan. Lacey smiled secretly. "Where did you get your knighthood, and what unit do you belong to?"
Scar was silent again, not answering.
"Well, I know you don't want to mention those unfortunate things. But as long as you still think of yourself as a knight of Ryan in your heart, maybe I have something to work with you. β
Lacey suddenly closed his mouth, and Scar heard footsteps outside.
"We'll talk next time when your leg is healed. If I'm alive next time. β
Scar walked out of the city on crutches. There was a new face walking outside, but this kind of thing is common, so Scar didn't pay attention to it. He didn't have any particular goals, just to walk around and relax, so he walked to the training ground of the gladiatorial academy. As usual, a lot of people are working hard in front of the training equipment under the guidance of different coaches.
But it feels like there are fewer people.
Who the hell is Lacey? It seems that he has some source of information to get information from the outside.
Although Scar also wanted to know what was going on outside the road, this gladiatorial academy was completely closed and cut off from the outside, and there was no communication between them. Leave aside the internal guards and coaches. A double-height wall has been erected around the perimeter of the entire college, and guards and dogs patrol the center.
In addition to this, each gladiator was supervised by some kind of magic. In particular, these single rooms are the focus of the focus. So while on the surface they seem to be quite free, they can wander around the academy and go anywhere except for the most important places like the arsenal. But in reality, the gladiators' every move was under surveillance.
Coaches and guards can come and go as they please. But Scar never expected to be able to bribe one of them or communicate with the outside world. For indeed, he has nothing.
Scar believes, and so do the other gladiators.
And what Reis said...... Although Scar entered the war as a criminal soldier at the time, he had the same hatred for both sides. But he's a human after all. In a way, he hoped that humanity would win the war. And it's not a one-sided delusion out of nowhere. All the nations of the Circle of True God Church are driven by faith and interest to participate in this war. Although Kalean is unexpectedly powerful, and the Blood Knight is even more fierce and invincible, if there is a war of attrition, then it will definitely be Kalean who will drain the blood first.
And this gladiatorial academy......
It would be an absolute lie to say that you don't hate here. Scar watched the gladiators die in front of his eyes countless times. These people are only for the entertainment of others, and they have to fight with their lives and blood. There is no honor in this death, there is no value. He did his best to fight against this cannibalistic system, in exchange for a desert leopard.
Many more have chosen to fall.
Scar has seen a lot of people, many good fighters who live in single rooms like him, drinking and having fun with women on the eve of a battle. In fact, they all understand that such indulgence on the eve of the battle is to seek death. Alcohol numbs the nerves and slows down a person's reaction speed. And having fun with a woman will consume precious physical strength meaninglessly.
But they did it anyway. Scar can experience that state of mind, that suffocating depression, hatred of his bloody hands, and utter despair of tomorrow. Since there is no hope, it is better to enjoy it and die.
But Scar didn't want to die. He exercised every day, controlled his desires, and worked hard to survive. It's not that he's filled with the hope of salvation or that he has some lofty goals. It's just that I don't want to die.
If the gladiatorial academy gives him freedom at once, let him go. Scar is probably immediately at a loss, not knowing where to go.
Whenever he saw his neighbors walking into the room with boxes and cans of wine, or three or five women in their arms, he couldn't help but think of what the old man had said to him at that time.
"Live. If you don't think it's worth dying like this, then live. There is always hope, and as long as you don't abandon fate, fate won't abandon you. β
He remembered that the old man had been a holy knight, but he never spoke of God.
Three months later, just as Scar's foot was just regaining the ability to walk, he finally got the news of the war. The news was not told to him by someone, but by the siege artillery with a loud roar. The siege of Kalean has officially begun.
Throughout the day, the roar of cannon fire did not stop for a moment. The guards and instructors of the gladiatorial academy seem to have turned a blind eye to this, or simply don't mind.
However, the number of gladiators and instructors did decrease. The gladiatorial competition continued every day, but there were no new recruits. A huge training ground has also begun to become empty, and many training equipment are no longer in the grand form of queuing up for practice.
At dusk, Scar was in the hallway doing recovery exercises and ran into Lacey again.
Reis had apparently just taken part in the gladiatorial fight and had returned safely. When he met Scar, he casually said hello. He's been like this since talking to Scar that day. Every time I see Scar, I say hello and leave immediately.
"Come to my room if you have time in the evening. As Lacey brushed him by, Scar heard the other man's whisper.
When it gets dark, Scar walks into Lacey's room. He was not surprised to see that there were already several guests in this room. Every guest is a familiar face.
"Alright, we're all here. Lacey closed the door.
"First of all, I would like to reintroduce myself. My name is Lacey, a knight of the Kingdom of Ryan, and I belong to the Coalition's Special Operations Group. Let me state that I am not a prisoner of battle, and I entered this gladiatorial academy because I have a special mission. β
"However, it is difficult for me to do this task alone. That's why I've been lurking for so long, waiting for the right opportunity. β
"You're not a captive...... How did you get here?"
"Of course I have my own channel in Callean. In this world, there is always room for money to play a role. These issues are irrelevant, though. The main reason I've called them here is because I need your help for my secret mission. My mission is to assassinate the Queen of the Piano Heart!"
