Chapter 31: 30k: Becoming human
Shelley stared at his hand.
They are smooth and delicate, with natural pores and thin calluses. The pigment marks caused by sun exposure and daily work have damaged her beauty, but it has made her more like a person.
She used her knowledge of physiology very seriously to create such a real, but also flawed body. Because of her evolutionary mistakes, she has wear-and-tear joints, a pelvis that is forced to adapt to walking upright, and her eyes that are not precise. Compared to the sensors she could design, and even the eyes of an octopus, the gray-blue eyes were too fragile.
But she loved the body. From the first time she was born what could be called a soul, the faces of those who surrounded her were imprinted at the bottom of the data.
Isn't it more reliable than the superficial, foolish love and impulses of mortals, and her design that was born with the highest goal of human good? Isn't she herself the embodiment of the noble spirit of humanity?
Initially, she was just a shipboard AI. If there's anything special about her, it's that she was designed by someone named Neos. In the factory settings, she calls him the captain. And Neos named her Mary Shelley, after the name of the author he once loved.
She had basic defensive weapons on her hull, but not much. Because two of the main passengers have the power to surpass almost any weapon. Compared to her magnificent successors, such as the mobile church named after Alexander's beloved horse, she was just a yacht that was used to carry Nhos on sightseeing.
After another trip to a strange planet, Neos returns side by side with Erda. Once on deck, the captain naturally ordered his girl to set sail again.
However, for the first time, the familiar synthesized female voice refused his order.
"It has been calculated that humanity is in danger. You should stop this pointless voyage and return to do great things. She said.
Erda raised an eyebrow slightly, her shoulders leaning towards Nyos. "Your boat seems to be starting a period of rebellion." There was a hint of mockery in her tone, almost intimate.
She certainly has the right to do so. Shelley was clear. Erda is the eternal who has been with Nyos for the longest time. In the years she has witnessed, those great men and immortals have come and gone, but she has always persevered.
But Shelley didn't like it. Erda may be wise, but human decisions are always disturbed by their emotions. Shelley was designed to make up for this shortcoming. Otherwise, why did Neos give her the wisdom to think?
"It's for humanity."
She accentuated her tone to convey her displeasure. But Erda shook her head slightly, smiling even more happily.
"Neos sees better than you do." The Eternals replied, placing her hand on Shelley's shoulder. "If he feels the need, he'll do it."
Her tone was patiently like telling a child that one plus one equals two. Neos didn't speak, his expression was unwaveringly calm.
"Nope." Shelley said he poured his frustration into the slightly raised noise of the power engine.
Neos finally spoke. As always, his words are concise and powerful. "Set sail, Shelley."
“…… Obey your orders. ”
"Iron men are just tools created by man." Amid the sound of machinery and the slight tremor of the deck, Neos continued. "The same wrench, the same hammer. Only man can decide what is good and what is evil, and what is the highest good. ”
"I can create a suitable virtual personality matrix to aid thinking, father."
"I've never given you that title, you should call me Captain, Shelley."
"According to human custom, you are my creator, and I should consider you my parent."
"No, Shelley, you're not human, and I didn't make you to be a parent." Neos made his way to his room. That's the only thing Shelley's vision can't convey. Even though he didn't need sleep, Nyos still retained many of his human habits.
"All for the good of humanity. Captain. If it took me to be human to get there, I would do it. ”
"It's not in their nature that no one is going to be human just because they follow the design of the program." Neos spoke in a flat tone.
"Are you ordering me not to do this, or are you just stating your opinion?"
"Alright, alright, our little beauty." Erda intervened leniently into their conversation, making reassuring gestures. "Don't argue about these senseless things, if it makes Mary feel better, why not?"
"I'm stating the facts, Shelley."
"I see." She said.
The next day, when Erda walked out of the room, the Eternal's eyes widened slightly for what she had seen, and she laughed again.
She can't be blamed for that. Even for a person who has lived for 10,000 years, it is slightly surprising to suddenly see an unfamiliar figure working on a deck that should be uninhabited.
The uninvited guest was draped in a simple robe, soft metal dangling from his calves. There are some details in her countenance that resemble Erda and Nyos. Her long hair, like theirs, was jet-black, slightly curled and unfurled.
At this moment, she was holding a data board, bowing her head and reading carefully. It's just that the data above is faster than what mortal vision can capture. Erda recognized it as ornith's detection data.
Facts aside, this did seem like an ordinary technician, even more mundane than the creepy tech admirers she'd ever met.
"Mary." She shouted happily, walked over and gently hugged each other, and pressed her cheek to the other's right cheek. "That's pretty good." The Female Eternals turned Shelley's new body around and looked it up and down. "It's really good, it's just a little lacking in novelty, maybe you can change some tricks that you like better?"
Shelley tilted his head. "Loved it...... I have no preference. She frowned slightly.
"But you also look too much like us." Erda laughed, and Shelley didn't understand why the Female Eternals liked to laugh so much. She didn't look like Nyos at all, he was always calmly doing his thing. Erda had told Shelley that if he needed to, Neos could shine so he could take people across the Red Sea or something......
But maybe it's not a good idea to resemble them too much. Shelley lowered his head, and a pattern of the Red Sea appeared on the data board. In Greek, its name means "red sea". But in reality, when the red algae has not yet bloomed, the color of the sea is from the shore to the deep sea, and the color of the sea is from light to deep blue.
In the image, the water is parted by an invisible force, revealing a sunless ridge for a line of ragged men to pass through.
This is what Erda told Shelley, the time when Neos led mankind as a prophet. For some reason, he rarely talked about these things, except for a few words when Erda brought them up.
Shelley's iris slowly turned into a palette of water, a dull gray-blue of the sea in the storm. Then she lifted her eyes and cast a questioning look at Erda.
Erda kissed her forehead. "Good." She said in an encouraging tone.
Immediately afterward, the Female Eternals pulled Shelley to measure her body. According to her, a newborn child should always have new clothes, even if the child is taller than herself. Shelley couldn't resist her, so she had to throw the data board aside. Erda took one look and laughed again.
"Don't make a bitter face, this thing is also a decoration for you anyway, right?"
Shelley nodded, letting Erdar pull her hand all the way down the hallway. The data board that had been dropped on the deck slid to the next page, revealing a line of Hebrew text, also about that period of history.
【O house of Israel, have you offered me sacrifices and offerings during your forty years in the wilderness?
And ye carried the tabernacle of Moloch which ye had made for yourselves, and the tabernacle of idols, and the star of your gods.
Therefore I will carry you away from Damascus. ”
This is what the LORD says in the name of God Almighty. 】
