Chapter XVIII Appointments
He put on his armor, buckled his thick cloak, and hung his short sword around his waist.
"My lord, do you want to take it away?"
The speaker was a young man of fifteen or sixteen, dressed in a red military uniform like an ordinary soldier, and asked Ustan with a package of things.
"Take them all away, probably won't be back for the next few years. Ustan nodded slightly at the young man, picked up his military bracelet from the table, and looked at it carefully.
"Tenacity, glory. Looking at the inscription on it, Ulstein's lips quivered slightly.
Shrinking his neck, the young man obediently walked behind the door and packed his things seriously.
Sighing slightly, Ustan clasped the bracelet on his right hand and sat aside, quietly waiting for the boy.
After a while, a young man carrying two packages walked from behind the door: "Lord Usten." β
"Are you all packed?"
"Packed up. β
"Let's go, then. After speaking, he dragged a package from the young man's hand, carried it on his shoulder, and walked out of the gate of the barracks first.
As soon as the door opened, a tall shadow blocked the doorway.
"Carlo. Ustan said calmly, "Is there something wrong?"
"Boss. The corners of the strong man's mouth trembled: "Are you leaving?"
"Rome's dispatch order, I intend to accept this new appointment. Ustan was expressionless: "Soon your appointment order will come down, and I recommend you to be the co-captain of the Harlingath United." β
"Good job!" the rough palm patted Carlo's right shoulder, without saying a word.
"Understood!" Carlo straightened his feet and raised his right hand, "Follow your orders, Captain!"
"Ho!" Ulstein's face softened slightly, "I'm not your wing leader anymore." β
"You'll always be our Wing Captain!" Carlo raised her face, biting her lower lip tightly, her eyes widening, "Forever!"
"I swear: the first thing all the new recruits of the Haringos Brigade will do when they come here is to let them know that Ustan Konstantin will always be their wing commander!"
β............β
"Carlo. Ustan said as he raised his left hand and shook it in front of his eyes, "Do you know what this is?"
"One...... Ring?" looked at Ulstein's ring finger, a silvery-white ring glowing with a polished color under his eyes.
"My uncle, Konstantin, who also had the surname Konstantin, gave me this ring on my first day in the army. Ustan looked at it wistfully: "It's engraved with - discipline, but in fact there is a word engraved in the ring, do you know what it is?"
"It's 'protection'. Ustan said softly.
"You'll be a good captain because you can always give people a sense of security, but that's not enough, you have to make the brothers always be able to do what is ordered, even if the order is wrong!" He calmly took the ring from his left hand and shoved it into Caro's hand, "But at the same time, you must also protect the brothers with your life, at all costs!"
"That's 'responsibility'. With that, Ustan turned around and left with the boy in his place.
Only Carlo, the strong man, was left to look at the silver ring in his palm without saying a word.
Then, solemnly, he put it on his little finger and gave a military salute to Ulstan's back.
"Follow your instructions, Captain Konstantin!"
After saying that, another word popped out of Caro's trembling lips:
"Boss!"

A few days later, Ustan and his young companion arrived in Caesarea.
"Wow-oh!" As if it was the first time he came to the city, the boy looked at the buildings around him in surprise: "It's only been four months, and it's changed so much!"
Ustan raised an eyebrow, but did not say anything.
Indeed, Caesarea is very different now than it was four months ago.
In other words, the southern part of the city is completely different from the original.
The road is straight, lined with small buildings, although there are still construction sites everywhere, construction workers come and go on the streets, there are no pedestrians, only the shelves have been erected.
One of the changes was the southern wall, where the gate was smashed and the large bluestone slabs were used to repair the foundations of the new wall.
As the future landmark of the southern urban area, the construction of the arena is undoubtedly the first to be built - a two-kilometer curved sand runway, a large lawn in the center, and a cement and marble staircase stand, fully showing the advantages of Roman architecture.
No Roman could refuse an invitation to compete, just one look at the magnificent arena and the two of them had an urge to get their blood boiling!
"Let's go, this is not where we should be now. Ustan said behind him, tapped his horse's belly and continued on his way.
"My lord, where are we going?"
"Minister of War, Mehemus. "Concise and to the point.
........................
"Ustan Constantine?" Theodore lay in his chair and looked at the scroll in his hand over and over again with a smile: "He is the nephew of Commander Constantine?"
"Yes, Caesar. Mehemus smiled and replied, "A very gifted young man." β
"Hah!" Theodore smiled, "Just looking at the resume, it's more like your nephew!"
"He's so much better than my son. With a wry smile, Mesimus sat down on the chair next to him: "Although he is very young, he already has the basic requirements of a commander. β
"I believe there is also an element of Konstantin's teachings. β
"Maybe?" Theodore couldn't help but laugh, and then frowned again: "However, isn't it too quick to give the position of Wing Captain so early?"
"We don't have that much time, Caesar. "Actually, I originally wanted him to take the position of military tribune (staff officer), but for the temporary expansion of the army, we need more excellent senior commanders to prepare for a possible war." β
"Yes, we just need time, but what we lack is time. Theodore nodded: "If I could, I would have planned to form two legions, but the current situation does not allow me to do so. β
"It's imperative to bring the surrounding minor lords into our rule as soon as possible. Theodore handed his resume to Mesimus: "Tell Quintus, two months, I will give him two more months, and in two months I will hold the flag ceremony of the first legion of Rome in the Hippodrome!"
"After seven months of training, I want to see a legion that can truly bear the glory of Rome!"
"Don't worry!" Mesimus put his hands behind his back and stood up straight: "The Roman legions will be invincible!"
"I hope so!" said Theodore.
"By the way, does he have any complaints about this dispatch order?"
"In fact...... No. Mehemus shook his head: "Almost without asking a word, he took the appointment without even making any stops." β
"It's impossible for any commander to have no nostalgia for the army he has led, which is not reasonable, not to mention that he also fought a fairly good victory with this hand-formed unit. Theodore held his chin: "At this time, when you are suddenly asked to leave, you will not complain?"
"Do you want me to bring him over and ask about it?"
"No, since I agreed, I won't have any doubts about the commander-in-chief I appointed, just ...... Somewhat curious. The corners of Theodore's mouth rose slightly: "Ustan Constantine, hehe." β
"Perhaps, it may not be possible to surprise us?"
(It's hard to be empty~, I have a day off on the Mid-Autumn Festival, and I can only change it, I'm sorry~)
