Section 121: The Road to the North (4)
Suomir has a large land area.
The region of Aurora alone is enough to compare with the whole of Avenella, which was a vassal of West Valier a few years ago. And if you roughly compare the whole country, it is almost equal to the kingdom of Maximilian, the kingdom of Sivalier, and the kingdom of Avenella combined.
Just looking at it this way, Suomir looks like a country that is so developed that it can call itself an empire. But if you know a little more about it, you'll understand that, despite its size, the population of this Northland country is not very large.
The reason is naturally inseparable from the cold.
Although the West Coast impression suggests that the four northern islands and even the Norsland region of West Valier are bitterly cold, the four northern islands located at the mouth of the Mobigas Inland Sea are actually at the same latitude as Northern Europe.
From Northern Europe further up, as you get closer to the poles, the population will become more sparse. When entering the Sea of North Rica, where the sea is already deep blue-black as seen from the coastline, it officially enters the territory of one-third of the territory of the Suomir Kingdom that is included in the polar circle.
This is an environment that is difficult for humans to live in, and even the Suomir people, who know the cold winter, rarely actually settle here.
Even the ubiquitous sharks are extinct here, as they struggle to cope with the icy temperatures. The oceans here are home to whales with thick fat and large marine mammals, as well as giant water dragons that feed on them. The same is true on land, where there are countless stories of snowmen two or three meters tall and giants four or five meters tall, and even the most courageous swordsmen rarely go deep into the North Pole.
One-third of the country's land is in the Arctic, one-third of the country's land is near the Arctic, and the remaining one-third of the country's land is relatively suitable for human life, with spring, summer, autumn and winter. Coupled with the reputation of "the land of a thousand lakes", one-tenth of the country is covered by large and small lakes, the largest and most famous of which is the Heinzwalm Meteorite Lake, where the church is located.
The title of the land of fairy tales is not exaggerated at all.
If we want to say beauty, this snow scene is naturally beautiful, but this beauty is also based on the premise that it is difficult for human beings to extend their footprints into it.
The races of the four northern islands are very similar to Suomir, there are only slight differences in height and face, and it is difficult for Suomir and Dan Lasso to distinguish between each other when they stand together without weapons or words, and for good reason.
According to the legend of the origin of the Skingsaga, the original Danlaso people settled further north in northern Aurora. They were once inhabitants of the mainland, but after they could not bear the bitter cold of the north and the infestation of all kinds of terrible creatures, they migrated south.
But the Suomis had already occupied relatively fertile southern lands, and after numerous wars between two similar but different peoples, the exhausted D'Raksso abandoned the continent and headed to the sea in search of survival. Eventually, the four northern islands were found on the vast sea west of Aurora, and they were able to develop and prosper in another region.
Now that war is a thing of the past, the two peoples, separated by the East and the West, across the vast sea, have taken different directions, and eventually evolved into many different languages and cultures. The resumption of exchange and communication has only been a matter of the last few centuries. In any case, the fact that Suomir's population was mainly concentrated in Aurora can already be seen from these details.
It was the right decision to come to Suomir in late summer and early autumn, when there was no snow to see, but the climate was relatively pleasant.
Departing from Polusaro, the way passes through small villages of herders. There aren't a lot of supplies to supply here, so you'll have to prepare yourself before you go. But if it's a little quicker, it's only a little over a day to reach the original town of the Northern European region.
From here, it is considered to be within the realm of the real Suomir. It's just a bit surprising but not surprising that the town called Poriynin is still full of traces of the Lamanites.
This was somewhat convenient for the three of them, for in a town where merchant travelers often came and went, outsiders like them would not be paid much unnecessary attention.
Her Majesty Suomir's current Queen is bent on reconciling with the Padrosi Empire, and there is evidence everywhere as far as the naked eye can see.
The idea of the royal family was transformed into words, into orders, and went to the place, and finally became physical objects through power and wealth.
The impact of the arbitrariness of the supreme power on the lives of the people below is a prime example.
There are two signs at the entrance to the town, the first of which is a less tall stone monument that looks like it has gone through a long time. It is covered with stone chisels and red iron oxide paint, and it is written with the Suomir word "Polyinin".
Next to it, a newer and more dazzling black iron signboard, more than two meters high, apparently a contemporary creation, reads "Rachuda Valdi Lago" in Lamani script – meaning "The Town of the Green Lake".
As the name suggests, it is not an exaggeration to call it the town of Cuihu. From the entrance, you can see the huge lake sparkling in the midday sun. This is the first sight that all travelers to the north will see, and after crossing the forests and plains of Southern Europe, they will be greeted by this beautiful lakeside town.
This is the starting point of the Land of a Thousand Lakes, and from here there are countless cities and towns that have been built on the shores of the lake.
"Parapara!" (stop, stop) Soldiers speaking Suomir Lamani stopped the three. It was clear that there were the same weapons laws as Polusaro, except that the soldiers' clothing was very different from that of the town only twenty kilometers away, and although there were still similarities on the cuirass, the matching overalls, helmets, and weapons were very different.
In the central part of the Patrosi Empire and in many parts of the Southern City-State Alliance, white armor, that is, a design without a burqa, was popular. However, in the colder kingdom of Suomir, it has been common since ancient times to add a robe to armor to keep warm, so the trend here is more similar to that of the West Coast.
The soldiers' summer overalls were relatively light and breathable, and there were ventilation holes in many places such as the armpits, and the overcoats could prevent the armor from being overburned when standing guard for a long time - while the three of them were observing, the soldiers of the defenders came over with their halberds.
As fellow combatists, the Luoan Maiden easily noticed the vigilance of these people - the way they carried their long-pole weapons was to hold the bottom of the halberd with their palms, rather than grasping the middle of the pole, this practice was to play the maximum attack distance of the halberd at any time and form a defensive formation - in other words, not the usual posture of carrying weapons, but the posture of combat readiness.
In another proof of this, the halberd of the Suomir defenders stopped at a distance of about two meters in front of the two men and did not continue to get closer. In the direction and distance where he stood, the Sage and the Roan Maiden, who were not armed with spears, were to attack and be hit by the halberds he had lowered before they could draw their swords and charge.
This person is not a weak hand, and he is by no means a second-rate defender with wine bags and rice bags, his movements are understated and do not show special vigilance, so as to avoid the opponent from detecting the sudden outburst, but the details are vigilant everywhere, and he is in a position that can cut into the battle formation at any time.
Such a natural approach could only be shown by a fairly well-trained man, and as could be seen from his more ornate equipment, the man who called them to stop and come forward was the squad leader of the soldiers guarding the door—he opened his mouth and asked the sage:
"Wiy-Puhua-Suomi?"
The squad leader said this, which was obviously another trap he was playing. He asked if he could speak Suomir, but this sentence was asked in Suomir, and if Henry subconsciously shook his head here to indicate that he couldn't speak, then he either could only understand and could not speak himself, or he clearly understood but deliberately deceived.
Without mentioning the vigilance of the opponent, as if chatting about a common sentence, people's reactions at this time are often the most natural, unthinking, and reliable.
Whether the sage nods or shakes his head, he will be more or less noticed by the other party, so the best choice here is to be like our white-haired girl on the side-
He looked dazed and didn't know what the other party was talking about.
Henry looked at the captain, his face full of obvious doubts, and a question mark almost popped up on his head.
"Nothing, nothing. The captain waved his hand and said this in Laman, then looked at Mira and Kaleva standing behind him, and finally let go of his right hand and let the halberd slide down until the bottom made contact with the ground.
"Come up and check. He grabbed the middle of the halberd and turned around and shouted twice, and the two defenders responded, but their posture was much weaker than that of the squad leader, and they looked completely untrained and relaxed.
Another privilege of listing mercenaries is that Henry and Mira are finally fortunate enough to experience after being officially registered mercenaries for quite some time.
As an orange-level mercenary and also wearing a mercenary group badge made of Mithril, the defenders didn't bother them much after the team leader confirmed that there was nothing suspicious, just looked at the badge or something and simply registered it and let them go. And the ordinary man who was traveling with him was not so lucky, he was searched and examined, and even the dagger on his waist was pulled out and looked at it, and then the soldier who checked looked at the young porter mockingly, and returned the dagger to him.
"What kind of attitude—" The eldest son of the innkeeper, who was apparently taken as a follower of the two, was a little indignant, but he was also somewhat self-aware, and his muttering did not come until he was far away from the soldiers.
Because the three of them were traveling together, Kaleva was also used to communicating in Laman, and the same was true of the muttering this time, which made the white-haired Luoan girl laugh again.
After a small episode without any waves, the group went straight into the town.
Without going into too much detail about the cliché of the process, the inn with the stables is the standard in every town built on the boulevard. Only this time they walked for a long time, but some of the hotels on the side of the road were always full.
From a distance, the stables are almost all tall and strong. These horses are obviously produced by Suomir, with an average height of more than two meters and a weight of more than 800 kilograms, some of which can even reach a ton, but they are not excellent war horses.
The best horses on the east coast were made by Padrosi, which is one of the reasons why the Suomirs were most famous for their great swordsmen who were not knights but more skilled in foot combat.
The Kramer itself is a versatile weapon that can split spears against infantry phalanxes, creating opportunities for follow-up troops to break through and flee or crush opponents. And when encountering a knight, this kind of great sword will become a weapon to cut the horse, and use the danger of wandering above the blade to gain life, and after dodging the deadly cavalry spear, kill the horse, and then deal with the knight.
Suomir did not have a good horse for riding, and the horse used by the rider was not as high and heavy as possible. Most of the horsemen, including those on the West Coast, are only about 1.7 to 1.8 meters tall, and weigh only about half a ton, so as to ensure enough long-term running and charging ability.
In contrast, these Suomir's heavy horses were more used as a pulling horse.
Ploughing the land and carrying goods, they are incredibly strong enough to charge at high speeds, but they can pull more goods and heavier tools.
- And if you extend from this detail, it's easy to guess who are the people who fill the hotel to the brim.
Heng tugged on the reins to slow the horses below him so that he could take a closer look at the stables.
Mira noticed this and pulled the reins, and Caleva shook her head in confusion and almost hit them, but luckily the clever little unicorn used the reins to hold him instead.
The three of them were alone on the way, and there were no carriages or riders on the road. But the inns in Cuihu show a different picture, and since the merchants who use heavy horse-drawn trucks don't come north to sell their goods, they have only two purposes left.
One is that the trip is in the opposite direction, transporting supplies from north to south for sale. This is a reasonable judgment and the first thought that pops into most people's minds.
In addition to the wool production, Suomir also has quite a lot of mineral resources, and the reason why this weapon was born here, which needs to be forged by precision, is also inseparable from high-quality minerals.
But that's not what they were carrying in their wagons.
If you are a merchant belonging to the same chamber of commerce, it is obviously reasonable to regularly transport large quantities of the same goods, such as large quantities of wool or large quantities of minerals, to Padrosi in the south for sale. In contrast, individual small businessmen choose to load a cart with all kinds of miscellaneous items and fill a carriage with all kinds of miscellaneous items, thinking about turning themselves into a grocer.
But small merchants usually don't choose this kind of heavy horses to carry their goods, although they have more strength, they also eat more. Unlike wholesale sales, which have a partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, small grocers don't have anyone to pick them up when they go to a new location, which means there's no guarantee that something will actually be dumped.
As a result, most of them opt for smaller pack horses, or even mules and donkeys, so that they can feed their livestock when they can't sell anything and have to go to the next stop to continue selling.
It is true that the large carriages pulled by heavy horses have a larger cargo, but if they are not sold out, it is a big expense to maintain them.
Therefore, only large chambers of commerce that often have large transactions will choose to pull horses. This, combined with the carriage placed separately from the horse, looks very similar in style and detail, and is clearly the work of the same carpenter's workshop.
The identity can basically be determined to be the convoy of a large chamber of commerce, but in this way, the goods they carry are very strange.
Skipping a few box carriages and a few wrapped in tarpaulins, the open carriages, although covered with black cloth, could still be seen through the gaps in some large and small boxes and household supplies.
The loss-making business of transporting supplies that could be bought locally was not something a merchant would do, and they had sent a special person to stand guard with a long stick in hand, and if you looked closely, there were glowing weights under the carriage, apparently holding one-handed sword weapons underneath.
Prepared not only in terms of equipment, but also in attitude, Henry's eyes met one of the guards, who glared at the sage viciously and shook the long stick in his hand, apparently warning him not to mess with their side.
The sage looked back as if he had relented, and the girl of Luo'an, who had also learned from him to make some observations, could already draw conclusions through these details.
"On the surface, it's an ordinary commercial transportation, but it's actually an asset transfer for the whole family?" said Mira, frowning her pretty little eyebrows, whispering in Avenella.
"Well, rats are always the first to disappear before disasters strike. Henry nodded, his tone calm, and his eyes shifted to the left.
On the right side of the avenue are densely packed with houses, while on the left side are a little sparser, and from here you can directly see the huge green lake that gives the town its name.
The turquoise lake sparkles in the midday sun, and white-painted boats sit neatly beside the pier, gently swaying in the ripples of the breeze. At this point in time, most people had gone to lunch, so there was only a lonely boat floating on the lake. If you have a good look, even at such a distance in this ample light, you can see that the romantic who lingers is a young man dressed as a Lamanite nobleman and a black-haired woman, and because of the distance, you can't hear their laughter, but you can see the joy of the two by their movements.
"And human beings have been sluggish since ancient times, and they did not react until the catastrophe came, but there was nothing else to do but hug their heads and cry. The sage half-squinted, looked at the two men on the lake, and then glanced at where the caravan was.
Under the calm green lake, the schools of fish gathered together formed a huge black shadow and flashed.
And the little couple above didn't know about it.
Just keep laughing.
