Chapter IX: Reconciliation
After breakfast, everyone returned to the lobby counter to prepare for the opening. Lisna went out on business.
A special guest came in the morning. As soon as she stepped out of the teleportation array, two of the three people present drilled under the table, leaving Namo to grab the necklines of the other two at lightning speed, preventing them from dodging.
Dressed in light trousers and carrying a bag in white and gray plaid with coffee-colored handles, Ms. Lyernott strode to the counter. Her aura as a high-ranking knight hadn't diminished in the slightest from her outfit, and she always felt that she could use that bag to split the Magic Book House in half.
Serian stood behind the counter and saluted with his hand on his eyebrows: "Hello sir!"
Lady Lyernott looked at Seren, and then at Syck, and she did not make sarcastic remarks as she usually did. She put her bag on the table, unzipped it and said, "Banatu wants me to deliver something. That guy has been getting bigger and bigger lately, and he dared to ask me to run errands. γ
There was no dissatisfaction in her lowered eyebrows, more like a sigh of joy. She pulled out a leather fanny pack and gave it to Seren, "This has just finished testing. γ
Syk couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, but Seren took it with an unusually cautious motion.
When the matter was done, Ms. Lyle Naute did not turn around and leave, but stood there frowning.
Rick felt as if she was waiting for something. So he took out a bottle of sorghum wine from under the table and said, "Would you like to stay and have a drink?" The early morning drinking didn't seem right, but looking at the appearance of Ms. Lyernot, Seeker always felt that he should take the wine out.
"Okay. Lyarnot smiled.
Xi Ke brought some appetizers and a pot of tea, and everyone but him drank, and he only tried the first cup himself, and the group began to talk.
Lyernott moved a chair and sat on the other side of the counter, drank two glasses, and began to talk about the recent events: "That guy Banatu kept calling me a transfer instructor and took all my job, and he and a bunch of little hairy men took the holy sword and thought they were knights, and they didn't take our generation seriously!"
"It's not that bad, he's also promoted by the top of the Knights. Naimo said. He drank the most, but showed no signs of getting drunk: "I've heard that his work is very good, and even my colleagues think highly of him. γ
"I'm almost fifty-five years old, and it's time to change instructors as usual, but I'm still in good health, and I can continue to fight demons!" Learnott said.
"There's nothing wrong with stepping back from the front line and going home to enjoy your family. Nick said as he shoved ribs into his mouth.
"That's what makes me the most sad, because my bunnies have gone to work in other places one by one, and even the youngest one has gone to the law firm in the capital for internships. I gave birth to six, and I can't see any of them when I get home!" Lyernott put the wine glass on the table, and his eyes glistened with tears as he spoke: "As a result, the little hairy head in the group also said that he didn't need me, teach me how to be good!"
Rick, Seren, and Nemo exchanged a look at each other, all thinking the same thing.
"Don't you have any hobbies, like musical instruments, painting, etc., you can practice at this time. Rick suggested a possibility.
"No! I was in the Holy Shield at the age of sixteen. At the age of twenty-two, I became the captain of the brigade, and after that, my life was dedicated to fighting evil, how can I have time to sing, paint, and do things that are not productive?"
"What about cultivating from now on?"
"I want to work! I don't want to be at home!" said Lyarnot, hunched over the table.
"Your work ethos is truly admirable. Xi Ke sighed heartily.
"We've all been like this all my life. Learnot raised his head, wiped his face and continued, "We work hard to grow up to give back to society, and the only way to do that is to work, without which we have no point in existing. If you don't work, you're a rice worm, there's no such thing as retirement and happiness, and we don't want to live like that!"
"Wow, giving back to society is such an old saying for our generation. Naimo raised an eyebrow.
"In our generation, the purpose of work is self-realizationβ"
Before Seren could finish speaking, Rick interrupted him and said, "It's a mouthful. γ
Serene glanced at Silk, who repeated firmly, "It's a mouthful. γ
"It was supposed to be self-realization, but Zuihou has become just for food. Serenne said.
"The four-step evolution of the post-war outlook on life is based on service, work, pleasure, and starvation. Naimo said, "This lady is a combination of the first two phases, and we are a combination of the last two phases. γ
"Very incisive. The generation that was purely for pleasure was also too happy. Serenne said.
Namo listened, raising an eyebrow. That generation was able to develop this outlook on life because their era coincided with the peak of post-war recovery, the culmination of prosperity. By the time they came up, the peak had passed.
Naimo smiled and said, "Life is long, and they are busy dealing with bankruptcy right now, so they don't need to be envious. Unless you want to go through your life in ten years, anyone will face two or three different eras. It's a foolish thing to rely on the times to survive. γ
"Speaking of the times, the tradition of the seven hundred years since the establishment of the Holy Shield is probably going to be smashed by that little hairy head of Banatou. Lyarnot lowered his voice, his face covered with a haze, as if his beloved treasure was about to be stolen.
"What?" Seren, curious, hadn't heard of any reforms in Banato other than the "Old Man Rapid Instructor Movement".
"I've heard it," Lyarnot's voice grew deeper and lower, as low as a chirping from the ground, "that he wants to change the trouser suit worn by the knight for seven hundred years into a short skirt!
"Very good!" The three men sitting across the counter shouted in unison, almost like shouting slogans at a military parade.
Lyernott jumped over Syck and Naimo, and struck Seren's head with a bottle alone.
"Female knights wearing trousers is a tradition left by Lady Antaline! you can't change it because of the fashionable skirts and sweet girls of this era!" said Lyle Not, pointing to the three men from the bottom of the bottle.
The three men unconsciously sat upright and listened to the training.
Lyernott announced imposingly: "Even if 'Police Flower' and 'Beautiful Warrior' are popular in this era, and there are girls everywhere, the Holy Shield will definitely not be led away by the trend!"
"I wish our founders were a little more feminine. γ
Seren's insulting remarks to Lady Antalen, the founder of the Holy Shield, immediately knocked on the head with a bottle.
Lyernott frowned at Rick and Nemo, pointed at Seren, and said, "Look at the virtue of Little Maotou, can I retire with confidence?"
"I believe he is your greatest concern. Naimo said.
Rick chuckled, "And you haven't put me back in jail yet. γ
As soon as these words came out, Lyernot raised his eyebrows meaningfully, and Seren and Nemo were stunned. For seven years, Lyernot has always believed that Nick is the evil party and wants to arrest Tick, but Tick has not committed any crime since the amnesty, and Lernot, who acts according to the law, has nothing to do with him. In other words, in the past, Xi Ke would never joke about it.
But Rick laughed lightly, showing that he wasn't making the joke out of hostility. Lyernott saw this, too, and she sighed and said, "It's my fault for spending so much time dealing with a guy who doesn't threaten the public, wasting the resources of the group. γ
"So you don't think Xi Ke is a bad person?" asked Namo at a loss.
It was obviously a bit difficult for Lyarnot to admit that she had misjudged: "ThisβI'm sure he's not the kind of person I have to deal with, at least for now. γ
This is already quite a concession for Lyle Not.
"And you're willing to drink my wine. Rick smiled and pulled out a second bottle. Lyernott wasn't worried about Syk poisoning him in the wine.
"That's right. Lyernott asked Rick to pour her wine and drank it dry in one gulp.
This action contains a rare trust.
"I think when I first became a knight, I caught bad guys who beat people because they were unhappy and robbed because of their desire for profit. γ
The three young men obediently listened to Lyel Nott's talk about the ancients.
"At that time, things were very simple, as long as the prisoner was caught, the law and order would be better. And the bad guys are easy to tell. In short, the guys who abuse violence and cause trouble. Those who live a well-behaved life and have a good reputation must be good people. At that time, the heroes we heard about were people who were better known than they met. γ
"He's a good guy when I hear his reputation, but when I meet him, I find out that he will sexually harass the waitress continuously, right?" said Seren.
"'It's better to be famous than to meet' is more about me than fame!" Lyernott knocked Seren's head again and continued, "As a result, before I knew it, there were some guys who would use various means to cover up their bad deeds and pretend to be good people. But at this time, things are all well resolved. The bad guy Zuihou will always show his true face. As long as you find evidence, no matter how unbelievable it is, you can only accept the fact that this is a bad person. The knights of my generation, the main opponents are such people.
"Then it became more and more difficult to distinguish between good and evil. With the development of the media in recent years, those media that need money to operate can let people buy fame with money. Prestigious people will also join forces to hype each other, profess trust each other, and cover up bad deeds.
"Until now, it has evolved into a shijie where good people commit crimes and bad people engage in charity, I really don't understand what shijie is. γ
"But you can still tell the difference between good guys and bad guys, right?" said Rick. If you can't tell the difference, it's impossible to say things like "good people commit crimes, bad people do charity."
"Yes. It's just hard to believe when you find out the truth. Learnot bent down and put his chin on the table, "I couldn't believe you for years, until you straightened out Norpig's Dharma, and I realized that you were 'on this side'. It's as if every time we discover a way to distinguish between good guys and bad guys, and apply it in reconnaissance, the bad guys will mimic the good guys according to the way we judge them. When we think that the bad guy is the guy who can't control his anger and beats people indiscriminately, the bad guy will become reluctant to use force to do things; when we think that the bad guy is the guy who is elegant on the surface and does all the evil in private, they will become people who have no flaws in their private life and treat others very kindly regardless of public or private affairs; when we think that the bad guy is the guy who spends all his resources on himself, they start charity groups one after another. Then, after evading our screening, these people will take advantage of the loopholes and do all kinds of evil things that are not lost to the 'ancestors'.
"Do you know how surprised we were when we found out that international aid organizations were full of hidden rape cases?"
"Those groups often go to war-torn areas, so there's a high chance of being sexually attacked, right?" Naimo said. All battlefields, without exception, are hotbeds of rape.
Lyelnott shook his head and said, "If the local criminals did it, I wouldn't have raised my eyebrows, just cut people! It was the 'local male supervisor' of the charity unit stationed abroad who raped the 'female volunteers' under him! There were endless appearances, but none of them were reciprocated! Charities stationed abroad usually have no channels to report crimes locally, and female volunteers can only rely on their colleagues for protection. What was supposed to be a situation of solidarity and cooperation turned out to be a good place for those in power to cover up the crime. It's pretty much the same for charitable organizations with religious backgrounds!
"In the past, when we investigated and caught a prisoner, people who knew the prisoner would breathe a sigh of relief and even complain that we were too slow. Now we often hear people around us say, 'No way! He's definitely not that kind of person!' or 'How is it possible, the group he belongs to has done a lot of good things!' until the evidence is full and they are at a loss!
"Understood? Serenne Nicol Lafayette!" said Lady Lyarnot, straightening up and slapping the table, "This is the hardest part of your generation's knightly job. The knights of my generation only need to be tough, but you need ||I don't know how to name the traits you need, but it's not just tough. γ
"Yes, I see. Seren took a deep breath, raised his head and chest, and replied with a full breath.
Lyernott directly took the wine bottle and poured a big sip into his mouth, saying, "Banatu has been calling me to transfer instructors, saying that I should let young people accumulate first-line experience, and let newbies try more while I am not dead and can clean up the mess, so that there will be no fault in the change of generations." He has a point, but I don't want to retire!"
"May I ask a question?" asked Rick, a little nervously, straightening his chest.
"Please. γ
"Is there a way to know who the bad guys are by impression before we even see the evidence?" asked Rick.
"I used to know how to answer this question, but now I don't. Lyarnot whispered, "I think that's why Banatu keeps telling me to retire." Lyernott glared at Serenne and said, "This guy has had his own set of standards for a long time. γ
Seren pursed his lips, "Should I tell who instigated me to let Xike go?"
"I didn't even notice that a whole group of young subordinates were planning disobedience activities, and I think I'm really out of touch with the times. Lyernot stretched out the bottle again, and Serenor shrank his neck and waited to be knocked, but Lyernot only touched the bottle lightly on Seren's head, "All I can tell you is not to trust a person for any reason other than behavior. It doesn't matter what kind of profession, religion, gender, appearance, dress, manners, language, conversation, or group he is...... Or even kinship. Any external condition can be used by bad people to deceive others into trust. I've been a knight all my life, and that's all I learned. γ
"Listen to his words and watch his deeds. Rick uttered a quote from an ancient sage. Listening to what a person says and observing what he does reveals his character. If you just listen to that person and believe that he will do what he says, you become "listen to his words and believe his deeds." That would be deceived.
"The only way to speculate about what a person will do in the future is through what he has done in the past. Lyernott daxiao: "What the ancients said two thousand years ago is the answer to the problems of this era!"
After drinking two bottles of wine, Lyernott said that he would go back to see if Xiao Maotou had any drills that smashed the regiment headquarters, and left. She's going to take public transport back.
Serian felt that the only place that would be smashed should be his room.
