Verse 14: Before the Snow Melts (2)

The southwest corner of Yidi, the area where the Lulu clan originally settled, has a high density of bears.

In the same way that the farther north a creature is, the lighter the coat, the larger the body. At a height of 3.5 meters and an average weight of 600 kilograms, the white bears that live in the northernmost part of the region are the largest known terrestrial bears, and even Suomir's snow tigers and dire wolves can only run away with their tails between their legs.

The bears in Yidi are all brown bears, and their coat color ranges from dark to light, and they are also moderately physical. But even then, the smallest adult can weigh more than 200 kilograms.

Similar to humans, bears are also larger males than females.

Not only that, but the male bear's aggressiveness and territorial range will also increase accordingly. Bears are creatures that take their territory very seriously, not only for their own kind, but also for human trespassing.

As a result, most of the Yi settlements are located in the plains, separated from the high-altitude mountain areas where bears live.

In most cases, the two are uneventful, and only intersect when humans go up to the mountains to hunt.

But there are exceptions to everything.

The bear was clearly a male bear, partly because the female bear gave birth during hibernation, but the footprints were not accompanied by the smaller footprints of her cubs, and partly because of its size.

The 195-centimeter-tall sage had large hands commensurate with his physique, measuring 22 centimeters long from his fingers to his wrists. But even when he put his hand on the ground and compared it to the 15-centimeter-long footprint of his claws alone, he looked small.

Bears' claws can't be retracted like felines, which is one of the main points that hunters use to identify footprints.

The size of the footprint can be estimated, but this footprint is a little shallow compared to what this type of physique should be.

Bears don't walk on tiptoe, and even if they do, the snow won't lie about your weight, and the fact that a lighter weight combination is still winter is a sleepless bear waking up hungry is exposed.

And then their situation becomes critical.

Adult males can reach up to 200 kilometres in territory, and the distance between this hillside and the longhouse is less than one hundredth of that number. It wasn't supposed to be here, apparently motivated by hunger to move into the sphere of human power.

The bear's sense of smell is very acute, even several times stronger than that of the hound, which humans rely on, so it is likely that it followed the smell of food cooked in a longhouse.

And now that it's so close, there's no doubt that the place it will go next in the snow-covered winter months is the only human village with food.

A hungry but not stupid bear, even if the wooden door of the longhouse can withstand the impact, it will lie in wait in the corners of bushes and houses to be attacked at night when someone goes out to the bathroom.

It's a visible threat in the future, but more important than that—

The three of them had already entered the territory of the bear.

Humans who have not bathed much in the cold winter months to save fuel and fresh water can smell sweat on their clothes, not to mention brown bears, whose sense of smell is far greater than that of humans.

"Hurry up and get ready, the sleigh is lost. The sage made a decisive decision, and Lulu next to him had already pulled out the mountain knife at her waist, and then quickly approached the vicinity to cut down a dead and thick tree, and quickly cut off the excess branches on it.

Then he removed the wooden grip of the mountain knife with a "pop", revealing the cylindrical hollow iron pipe knife stem inside, and quickly cut the trunk of the tree, put the knife on it, and smashed it several times on a large tree to make sure that the sleeve was tight.

In the space of more than 3 minutes, she quickly transformed the mountain knife on her body into a short spear, and the speed of her movements made our Luoan girl a little stunned.

The sleigh was accompanied by a felling axe, which they had brought all the way from Aurora, and had been somewhat rusted by the wind during the boat ride. Plus the Western-style daggers that the two of them also carry, and that's all their equipment.

Like Lulu, Henry and Mira tied their daggers to sticks and made spears. Because they weren't professional hunting knives, they had to cut out the notches and tie them with rope instead of putting them on directly, which took some time, so much so that about ten minutes had passed by the time they were ready.

Three spears and two axes, and the sleigh that got in the way was left behind. They had all the preparations they could do at the moment, but the weapon was only an emergency at best, and it might not be of the best use against a thick-skinned brown bear.

This is the time to slowly back away and get away, and there are not many odds against a large bear with no armor or a truly powerful weapon.

So the best plan is to stay vigilant, get together and try to make the target bigger and more intimidating, and steadily return to the longhouse to make another plan.

It is impossible to outrun brown bears, which can run almost twice as fast as humans, so they can only retreat slowly, while paying attention to the wind and grass next to them.

The entire hillside is quiet, and even the rustle of the trees is absent on a windless sunny day. The snow covered the canopy and the rough bark was quite a bit dirty, but the narrower view here meant they could take off their blindfolds without worrying about dazzling.

The endless blue sky and the sparkling sun make everything around you look so clear that if you don't know anything about the situation, you'll probably find it all beautiful.

Ignorance is bliss, and looking at the scene around her, perhaps to relieve tension, Mira begins to think cranky - but the next second the steady voice from her teacher pulls her back to reality.

"It seems that the other party is not going to let us go. ”

Henry opened her mouth to say this, and since she didn't speak the Chinese language of the moon, Lulu glanced at him, but her attention was quickly drawn back to the behemoth that popped out on the left side of the road ahead.

It was covered in snow.

The coat color lacks luster, and the black, brown and light brown are uneven, and it looks very haggard.

The silhouette of a round bear is not usually there, and it can be seen that the face and body are so hungry that they fit the skin and bones.

It was blind in one eye, diagonally facing this side of its body, with claw scars that fur could not conceal, but the scars on that eye were clearly not caused by the other bear.

It was a straight, old wound that looked like some sharp object had stabbed it in the lower part of the eye socket and pierced it in the eye.

"Alagami" Lulu's voice trembled a little, and she said a word that neither the Sage nor the Loan Maiden were familiar with, but they could understand that it was the name of the bear.

This is pretty much the worst-case scenario, a bear that has fought with humans and tasted human flesh, and even exists in the accounts of the native Yi people.

"I didn't expect it to be alive, calamity. Lulu seemed nervous, and Henry and Mira didn't share this fear because they weren't familiar with the legends of the Yiren, but they could still tell a lot of detail from the information.

Strong, wild brown bears are certainly terrifying, but wild animals also weigh threats, and most bears tend to avoid rather than attack humans, a vengeful and numerically dominant creature.

This sense of mystery and distance was what kept them out, but the bear had already fought human hunters, and it could be inferred from Lulu's tone more than once.

In other words, there is no mystery or distance for humans as a creature, and it is even hostile to humans because of its scars.

A wise and powerful and cunning male bear appeared in front of them.

This is already a situation where there is no going back.

It slowly began to approach, its pace looking exhausting, but no one took it lightly.

"Prepare your spears. Henry spoke, and both men behind him swung their spears in his motion.

The nearly two-meter-long improvised weapon, with its sharp tip shining brightly in the sunny sun, pointed at the huge male bear named Alagami, and its steps stopped, and it understood its horror after being hurt many times by this weapon.

It looked a little hesitant, which made the Loan girl breathe a small sigh of relief—but Lulu next to her was still cautious: "Be careful, it's cunning!" she said in the native language, a simple word that Mira could understand—and in an instant, the brown bear, which showed signs of retreating, lowered its head and galloped towards them.

"Roar!!" it let out a loud roar that sent the snow flying everywhere, then scurryed its skull in a roadless position.

"Get out of the way!" Lulu shouted, and as she shouted, the Sage dropped the spear in his hand, grabbed one in one hand, and threw them both to the side of the road, and then rolled on the ground.

"Smack!!" the snow flew wildly, and the brown bear that had pounced on the air clawed hard with its rough claws, then turned around and charged at Henry, the largest of the largest.

In just a dozen seconds, it showed a high level of intelligence.

Trying to trick humans into letting their guard down and then lunging forward, Mira is a novice in dealing with bears, though she also understands that the spear array can kill her opponent in the face of a heavier opponent's onslaught.

So it's a must to dodge just now, but your teacher is more than capable of throwing the improvised spear in her hand to kill it before all this happens—what is the teacher thinking?

She quickly shook off the doubt, then rose from the snow and began to look for the fallen spear.

On the other side, Henry dodged Arakami's pounce again, but he was gradually forced to run out of room to move.

The reason why the sage didn't lose his spear was very simple, one was that the speed of the bear sprint was too fast, he only had a very short time to react, and if he chose to attack, he would not have a chance to escape.

Secondly.

The guy lowered his head at the risk of losing sight of the road as he sprinted, and it wasn't out of fear.

The bear's skull is one of the thickest in the body, and even the Rigalese's heavy winch armor-piercing crossbow will bounce off it.

It is impossible for a short spear to penetrate it, and it is impossible to inflict fatal damage anywhere else.

This old bear does have both wisdom and strength.

"Bang!!" Because the knee-deep snow was so incomprehensible, even though the snowshoes had been torn off, Henry's movements were still sluggish, and he fell into the snow, and Arajami swept it over with a direct paw.

"Shhh

The snow melted by the body temperature and the sun's rays poured coldly into the soaked clothes through the cracks, and the neck and limbs began to chill from the constant rolling on the snow.

He decisively got to his feet, then jumped and rolled to the other side, opening up a little distance, while Alacammi remained staring at his most threatening target.

"Hmmm—" The escape and chase continued, and our Sage was still the only one to dodge and escape in the face of such a situation.

The terrain and environment are very unfavorable, and the opponent is stronger than him in terms of physique and attack power, and even has excellent intelligence, no matter how Lulu and Mira next to him move, he always ignores them and only stares at Henry.

He had dragged the axe on his waist until now before he could take it out, but the portable axe only caused it some pain and minor injuries in the face of the tough bear skin and strong muscles.

This vital part of the head is protected by a thick skull, and Rao is our Sage Sage with incredible strength, without holding the invincible Kramer.

It is also impossible to split the head with this small axe alone.

The snow seeped into the clothes, and despite the direct sunlight and the movement of the body, the limbs grew cold as they stood knee-deep in the snow.

If you wait until your hands and feet start to become inconvenient, it's too late.

"Hah-" Henry exhaled, and then the moment the brown bear pounced again.

Eyes.

A blue light lit up.
