On the afternoon of December 2, 1929, when the sun had set and the cave was dark, Pei Wenzhong, a young graduate of Peking University, found an ape-man skull in the dim light. Before dawn the next day, he was carefully sent to Beijing with a quilt.

The news that the Chinese discovered the Peking ape man was like a spring thunder, so that those scholars who were tightly bound by traditional prejudices had to admit that in the dawn of human history, there was indeed a stage of "Homo erectus", he was not only the descendant of "Australopithecus", but also the ancestor of "Homo sapiens", including modern man, and an important link in the evolution process from monkey to man.

The human fossils found in Zhoukoudian were originally kept in the safe of the dissection room in Building B of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and were studied by the famous Swedish anthropologist Wei Dunruiga.

In 1941, shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor, relations between Japan and the United States were quite tense, and the U.S. Embassy in China advised the American expatriates to leave China. But for various reasons, the fossils did not take off.

One day, about three weeks before Pearl Harbor, Bowen, the general director of Union Hospital, suddenly announced the secret packing of all the fossils in thin cotton paper with the microscope lens. It was wrapped in cotton wool, then wrapped in powder and paper, tied with fine gauze and cotton on the outside, packed into two large wooden boxes, and transported to the U.S. Embassy to be transported to the United States with the U.S. Marine Corps.

On the morning of 5 December, the "Pekingese," labeled as "top secret," were transported out of Beijing on a special train of the US Navy, "escorted" by several soldiers, and prepared to go to Qinhuangdao to be transported to the United States by the "President Harrison" mail ship. However, two days later, before the military train reached Qinhuangdao, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and Japan and the United States became official belligerents. In China, the Japanese army quickly intercepted and seized the American military train. Since then, these extremely precious fossils have disappeared.

This astonishing case of loss caused a strong reaction around the world, and at that time, not only the Japanese were looking for it, but also the Americans were looking for it. After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, due to the request of the Chinese government at that time, the U.S. Far East Command made an inquiry to the Japanese side, but there was no result.

So how did the "Peking Man" fossils go missing? There is a theory that the Japanese loaded all the boxes that had been unloaded from the train onto barges and prepared to load them onto a cargo ship bound for Tianjin. Unfortunately, the barge capsized, and the "Peking Man" fossil sank to the bottom of the sea. According to another theory, the mail ship was captured by the Japanese army, and the fossil was intercepted by the Japanese army, and then changed hands several times, and finally its whereabouts are unknown, and it is likely that it was hidden in the Japanese people.

Anyway, since Qin Di remembered this incident, he couldn't sit idly by and watch it disappear.
