Chapter 285: Skull

Speaking of which, Zheng Zhenze's eyes showed an eager gaze: "Mr. Qin, the collection of ancient books has just started, as far as I know, there are many library buildings in Jiangnan, which are currently in a precarious state, and the owners of some books are afraid of being snatched by the Japanese, so they hide the books in the basement, but the basement is too trendy, and it is difficult to ensure that the books are not destroyed...... Yuhai Hall, Qunbi Building, Jiaye Hall...... There are quite a few ancient books...... Mr. Qin, I have the heart to buy these books and move them to Kunming and Chengdu, but unfortunately I don't have the money......"

Historically, after the liberation, Zheng Zhenze divided a small courtyard house in Beiping, and his home was full of books, and after his plane crash in 1958, his family donated all 100,000 books to the country. In addition, a large number of books were brought to Taiwan by the Qingbai Party and treasured in the museum.

Qin Di asked, "How much does it cost?"

Zheng Zhenze was overjoyed, but when he spoke, he hesitated a little, and said in a low voice: "I'm afraid it will cost 300,000." ”

Qin Di immediately wrote a check for 500,000 yuan in legal currency to him.

Zhang Congyu sighed beside him: "Mr. Qin, you are really wealthy." ”

Qin Di smiled slightly: "Money is something outside the body, and if the ancient book is destroyed, it will never be recovered." ”

Zheng Zhenze sighed: "Yes, people who don't know how to do ancient books think that they have no value, but I am a person who does 'exegesis', and I think it is priceless, it is the history of the Chinese nation...... For example, "Maiwangguan Copying School Books Ancient and Modern Miscellaneous Dramas", 242 volumes, half of which are unique copies, if there is no it, how can future generations understand the history of the peak of Yuanqu?"

Qin Di said: "Mr. Zheng, if you don't have enough funds, you can take the account from Ji Yuezhai." I plan to invest 8 million yuan in Ji Yuezhai to collect antiques, calligraphy and paintings, and ancient classics. As for where to put the books I bought? Now that there is a shortage of soldiers, it is not safe to move around, and I have a few secret mansions in the magic capital where I can put these things. ”

Although Zheng Zhenze was happy, he was still not at ease, for fear that Qin Di was a hammer and accidentally damaged the ancient book, so he asked: "Mr. Qin, I heard that you have collected some calligraphy and paintings, can you let me take a look?"

Qin Di shook his head with a smile: "That's not good." The place where I collect books and paintings is the world's first-class secret place, without wind and rain, like spring all year round, and it will not be bad if it is put for a thousand years. ”

"Ah, how can there be such a place in the world? Mr. Qin, are you kidding?"

Qin Di said: "There is no need to say more, wait until a few decades later, you will naturally see." ”

"Mr. Qin, these things are all national treasures, you can't transfer them abroad!

"Hehe, don't worry, when the time is right, I will take it out. ”

Qin Di collected all the calligraphy and paintings in the small world of Wuyi Mountain, so naturally he would not allow these two people to go and enjoy them. After a while, he suddenly asked, "When you two were collecting ancient books, did you see oracle bone inscriptions?"

Zhang Congyu replied: "Of course I have seen it, but it is not a treasure." The treasures are in the national collection. ”

Zheng Zhenze said: "I heard that there are tens of thousands of rare oracle bone inscriptions, a total of 1,132 boxes, shipped to Kunming. ”

Qin Di asked again: "So, what about the skull of the Peking ape?"

The two looked at each other, both feeling strange.

"Mr. Qin, why did you ask about the skull?"

"Now that thousands of boxes of oracle bones have been transported, will the skulls be lost?"

Qin Di sighed in his heart, because the skull was indeed lost in history, and it happened around 1940!

He put his hand on his forehead, retrieving the memory in his mind, how the ape-man skull was lost. It was a long time before he remembered some of the accounts, and he breathed a sigh of relief.

Peking Man is one of the ancient human ancestors, living in the Zhoukoudian area five or six hundred thousand years ago.

After 1920, people mined limestone in Zhoukoudian, and dug out "keels" from time to time. Once excavated a human-like tooth fossil, after research by Bu Dasheng, director of the Department of Anatomy of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, it was believed to be a fossil of ancient humans, which represented a new species, and was named the Chinese ape-man "Peking Man". He predicted that the cave in Zhoukoudian was the hometown of the Chinese ape-man and contained their fossils.

On the afternoon of December 2, 1929, when the sun had set and the cave was dark, Pei Wenzhong, a young graduate of Peking University, found an ape-man skull in the dim light. Before dawn the next day, he was carefully sent to Beijing with a quilt.

The news that the Chinese discovered the Peking ape man was like a spring thunder, so that those scholars who were tightly bound by traditional prejudices had to admit that in the dawn of human history, there was indeed a stage of "Homo erectus", he was not only the descendant of "Australopithecus", but also the ancestor of "Homo sapiens", including modern man, and an important link in the evolution process from monkey to man.

The human fossils found in Zhoukoudian were originally kept in the safe of the dissection room in Building B of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and were studied by the famous Swedish anthropologist Wei Dunruiga.

In 1941, shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor, relations between Japan and the United States were quite tense, and the U.S. Embassy in China advised the American expatriates to leave China. Union Hospital also lacks a sense of security. In order to obtain American citizenship and continue his research work at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, Wei Dunrui also decided to go to the United States, at that time, for the safety of these specimens, he hoped to transport the human fossils that belong to China to the United States for preservation. But for various reasons, the fossils did not take off.

One day, about three weeks before Pearl Harbor, Bowen, the general director of Union Hospital, suddenly announced the secret packing of all the fossils in thin cotton paper with the microscope lens. It was wrapped in cotton wool, then wrapped in powder and paper, tied with fine gauze and cotton on the outside, packed into two large wooden boxes, and transported to the U.S. Embassy to be transported to the United States with the U.S. Marine Corps.

On the morning of 5 December, the "Pekingese," labeled as "top secret," were transported out of Beijing on a special train of the US Navy, "escorted" by several soldiers, and prepared to go to Qinhuangdao to be transported to the United States by the "President Harrison" mail ship. However, two days later, before the military train reached Qinhuangdao, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and Japan and the United States became official belligerents. In China, the Japanese army quickly intercepted and seized the American military train. Since then, these extremely precious fossils have disappeared.

This astonishing case of loss caused a strong reaction around the world, and at that time, not only the Japanese were looking for it, but also the Americans were looking for it. After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, due to the request of the Chinese government at that time, the U.S. Far East Command made an inquiry to the Japanese side, but there was no result.

So how did the "Peking Man" fossils go missing? There is a theory that the Japanese loaded all the boxes that had been unloaded from the train onto barges and prepared to load them onto a cargo ship bound for Tianjin. Unfortunately, the barge capsized, and the "Peking Man" fossil sank to the bottom of the sea. According to another theory, the mail ship was captured by the Japanese army, and the fossil was intercepted by the Japanese army, and then changed hands several times, and finally its whereabouts are unknown, and it is likely that it was hidden in the Japanese people.

Anyway, since Qin Di remembered this incident, he couldn't sit idly by and watch it disappear.
