27. Long live the emperor! (12)

The third day of the fruit month.

It was destined to be a day of humiliation for Charlemagne in general, and especially for the proud citizens of Lüdes. From this day on, they will no longer be subjects of the Kingdom of Charlemagne, but citizens of the fourth rank of the Holy Gilmanian Empire.

In the corners that the police and soldiers could not see, the men did not say a word, the women sobbed quietly, and after the last Charlemagne language class a month ago, the schoolchildren who had not yet learned to write essays were also infected by the atmosphere of the adults, confused, hesitant, frustrated, uneasy, and sad - all emotions hung directly on the immature faces, adding a touch of sadness to the already solemn atmosphere.

Even so. There is not a single person who will show his innermost feelings and dare to smear the face of the empire.

So far, the defense forces have maintained an almost gentlemanly attitude towards ordinary citizens, and there are no such things as harassing citizens and bullying men and women that are common to military ruffians, but no one dares to guarantee that this army, which is famous for its "iron blood", will continue to be gentlemen after being provoked. In order to avoid being dragged to the rumored Interrogation Room of Stasi 101 for "coffee", and to receive the extra rations and cash rewards promised by the authorities, the citizens of Lüdes suppressed their true feelings and did their best to show a gesture of euphoria.

Of the many gloomy hearts, perhaps only one heart is truly joyful and excited.

Colonel Rufer.

An old soldier of the kingdom era, an eighty-year-old stubborn who is extremely patriotic and values honor. As early as the beginning of the war, the old man fell in love and bought a house with a balcony on the Elysée pastoral avenue, and the old man lived in a room next to the balcony, waiting for the triumphant return of the kingdom's army...... The old man's wish was about to come true, until the defenders slaughtered the Ardennes Forest and activated the revolving door operation.

While the news terminal hanging on the pastoral avenue of the Élysée was broadcasting the news of the fall of the fortress, the former colonel, who had just finished dinner, was getting up and walking to the balcony to blow the evening breeze, waiting for the latest battle report from the base camp. As a result, he, like everyone else, waited for a thunderbolt from the sky.

Unlike ordinary and ignorant civilians, Colonel Rufer was a battle-hardened professional soldier who knew very well what the fall of Sedang meant to Charlemagne's army, which was deep in the Rhine front at the time. Extreme shock and anxiety interacted, and the old man fell unconscious on the spot. Later, the doctor who lived on the same street diagnosed that the old man had suffered a deep stroke, and his physical functions were almost completely paralyzed, except for his vision, smell and thinking skills, all of which were paralyzed from the neck down, and his hearing and speech abilities were also seriously impaired. The old colonel, who had once been tall and burly, like a rock, had become a tall, large, deaf and dumb old log lying on his bed. People thought that this stubborn old man would not be able to escape the call of the mother god no matter what. But the only relative beside the old man, his resolute and beautiful granddaughter, stood by his grandfather's side, worrying about his father who had joined the army, and looking at his grandfather, whose face was flushed and panting...... The doctor next to him also looked helpless, and when he was about to usher in the end of the old man's life with the girl, a miracle happened.

The base camp announced a great victory at Verdun - 20,000 defenders were annihilated and several high-ranking generals were captured. Anyone who cares about the situation of the war and has basic common sense should know that Charlemagne has no troops in the Verdun area that can stop the Wehrmacht's armored clusters, and he should also understand that the so-called "great victories" in the base camp only exist in the minds of some high-level people and in another world. Yet people in the face of adversity are so eager for good news that people are boiling and cheering again. I don't know if it was the mother goddess who performed a miracle, or if some kind of electricity was turned on, and the sound of the whole country jubilant actually spread all the way to the deaf and dumb patient, all the way into the head of the stroke. The old man miraculously recovered, his eyes were bright, his tongue was no longer stiff, and he even smiled and asked the doctor and his granddaughter if they had won the battle.

It was a hard-won miracle, and in order to keep a candle in the darkness, the doctor and the girl decided to lie to the old man—the Mother Goddess testified that it was a white lie made to save a life, and no one could accuse them of it.

Thus was born a series of glorious battles. At first, the old man's mind was not flexible enough to cope with the past, but as his health gradually recovered, his thinking gradually became clearer. It is not easy for two laymen to fool an old Qiuba, and he asks his granddaughter to tell in detail about the actions, battles and campaigns of the armies of both sides. In order to hide from her stubborn and clever grandfather, the little girl had to find a pile of military books, supplement her military knowledge, and then spend her days lying on the map with the doctor to study how Charlemagne's army should march - they even did a better job than the staff officers of Charlemagne's army general staff. After all, in these fictitious battles, the biggest contributor is Colonel Rufer, you must know that the old man has been fighting for half his life, for him, those pointy-eared ghost animals are juniors, and he knows what actions the other party will take. As a result, his predictions came true without exception, and his health began to improve with the old man's more and more cheerful laughter. When his granddaughter and the doctor told him that Charlemagne's army had surrounded Alfheim and begun a siege battle, the old man was able to walk on the ground!

Faced with this miracle, which could no longer be explained by medical theory, how could the girl and the doctor bear to tell the patient that the Battle of the Rhine was over and Charlemagne's army had been annihilated? On the day of the decisive battle, they fed the old man sleeping pills early, and Colonel Rufu slept all day. Just as he fell asleep, it was all over, and Charlemagne's fate was inevitable. But the old man still didn't know anything.

In this way, in the midst of one "good news" after another from Charlemagne's army, the Alfheim Defense Army came. It's just that since the army didn't enter the city, Stasi's ubiquitous "big brothers" were not interested in the family - they weren't the Gestapo and SS, they didn't care if a paralyzed old man had ever been circumcised, and they weren't the NKVD police to investigate whether the old man had joined the White Guards or had opposed Stalin. An old man who hangs himself by lying can't alarm Stasi's "big brothers".

And so, it dragged on and on until the third day of the fruit, when Colonel Rufer got up from his bed on his own, dressed in a full suit of cavalry, and put on all his medals, and waited for Charlemagne, whom he was so proud of, to march past him through the Arc de Triomphe.

His Majesty the Emperor, who was about to ascend the throne, did not know that there was such an old man in Rüdesli, and when he stepped down the ramp of the "Emperor", he got into the convertible car imitating Mercedes-Benz 770K, surrounded by many high-ranking officials, and the huge convoy galloped towards the Palace of Versailles.
