Chapter 4: A New Life, A New Beginning
Don't think that the life of a child who recites the scriptures can be very leisurely, and it is okay to be leisurely, but the homework that should be recited must be kept up, otherwise the future will not be good.
According to the rules of Wuji Temple, which is actually the common rule of the entire Daomen Palace, the Jingtang has a monthly exam every month, and there is an annual exam for every year, and the results obtained will be recorded in the file. Listed as the first class, you can go out with the high merit to do the Dharma, that is a rich mission, and the future achievements are expected; if you are listed as the second class, it doesn't hurt or itch, what should you do; if you are unfortunate enough to fall in the third class, the monthly case will be halved, three consecutive third class, the whole year will be confiscated, and then three consecutive third class, directly fined and confiscated, and you will be discharged from the hospital!
Of course, the chances of the last situation occurring are extremely small, unless you are really stupid and stupid, and you offend the supreme merit in the sutra hall, down to the sutra master, the Jing master, and other professors to death, otherwise generally speaking, you will raise your noble hand at the critical moment and let you go.
Although the Taoist Academy rarely chases Taoist priests, if the results are not good, it will have a great impact on the future future. At least when there is an opportunity to transfer, such as which steward in the "Five Masters and Eighteen Heads" has a vacancy, if the file is not good, then you don't have to think about it.
However, it cannot be generalized, and there are also individual positions that will be selected from those with poor grades, such as Zhao Ran's earliest supervisor Zhou Yuantou, when he was reciting scriptures in the scripture hall, his monthly examination results were extremely poor, and he had been reciting scriptures for ten years, and more than 30 times in the monthly examination were listed in the third class, and half of the annual examination results were below the red line. The prison saw that he was indeed not the material for chanting, and simply let him take care of the sweep, which must have been a punishment rather than a reward.
Zhao Ran and Zhu Meng are both new Taoists, and they don't have to take the monthly exam within three months, but after this period, they have to put pen to paper, but the first test paper to answer is B-class - this is an exam prepared by the scripture hall for Taoists with less than three years of experience, and after three years, it will be replaced with first-class test questions.
Zhao Ran did not delay his homework, and read the scriptures in the scripture building until late at night on the first night. It was on this night that he confirmed his change - his memory was excellent!
After reading the "Tao Te Ching" for two months, Zhao Ran has never been able to recite it in order in the past, but he read it twice tonight, and he actually recited it silently! He was instantly moved to tears, this Nima is a big killer, and as soon as the golden finger is opened, the vast Taoist scriptures will no longer be a problem.
The next day, as soon as Zhao Ran's morning homework was over, he immediately rushed to the Tibetan scripture building. He first recited the "Tao Te Ching" silently, and now that his memory has not faded, he immediately settled down, and then found out the "Lao Tzu Xiang'er Note" and began to read it again.
"Xiang'er Note" is not more than the "Tao Te Ching", it is an exposition and promotion of every sentence in the "True Scripture", and the full text is much longer. There are only two volumes of "True Scripture", but there are more than ten volumes of "Xiang'er Note", Zhao Ran is piled up on his chest, and the top volume is almost up to his chin. It took him seven days to memorize the full set of "Xiang'er Note", and then it took another three days to compare the "Tao Te Ching" with "Xiang'er Note", and recited it silently before and after, and then picked up "Lao Tzu's Western Ascension Sutra".
In the meantime, Zhao Ran also saw the figure of Zhumeng in the Tibetan Scripture Building every day, but this guy was far less assiduous than Zhao Ran reading the scriptures, generally on the second floor of the Tibetan Scripture Building, leisurely brewing a pot of tea, picking up a few scriptures, reading at will, reading for two hours when the interest was high, and staying in the Tibetan Scripture Building for less than half an hour when the interest was not good.
Every time Zhao Ran saw the figure of Zhu Meng leaving early, he was secretly smiling in his heart, and at the same time he was ruthless - Lao Tzu has a golden finger, and he is harder and harder than you, but I want to see what you will do in the monthly exam, how strong are your bones better than Lao Tzu!
In addition to hard reading, Zhao Ran is also looking for channels to understand what is "root bones" and what is "qualifications", he asked Yu Zhiyuan for advice, but Yu Zhiyuan is not a person with roots, so his explanation is also very vague - the speaker doesn't even understand himself, do you want the listener to understand, is it possible?
He didn't find an answer from Yu Zhiyuan, so he asked Yumo in the letter.
Yumo's explanation was very detailed, but Zhao Ran still felt very mysterious. Yumo's explanation is: the so-called "good root bones" means that the bones and meridians in the human body are in harmony with the way of heaven, and "good qualifications" means that people have strong comprehension and can be penetrated at one point. To sum up, it means that this person is in harmony with the Heavenly Dao, has no lag in internal and external communication, and has a strong ability to understand the Dao.
For example, if you learn spells and spells, you can learn them as soon as you have good roots and qualifications, but you can't learn them anyway. Yumo's experience is that the feeling is as if everything is "natural".
Zhao Ran could understand this explanation, but he couldn't understand it, so he changed his angle and asked Yumo, those cultivators with good roots and qualifications, what are the most prominent characteristics of their cultivation, such as - for example, do you feel that your brain is particularly clear, your memory is very good, and your eyesight and ears are particularly strong?
Yumo's reply said that good memory, strong eyesight and ears, this is the "effect" after cultivation, not "cause", it is the appearance after cultivation. Root bones and qualifications are the "causes", which are the reasons why the practice can proceed smoothly. It's like a peach tree bears peaches because the tree is a peach tree, and if you change it to a pear tree, the fruit will be a pear. A peach or pear is a good memory, strong eyesight and ears, and a peach or pear tree with roots and qualifications.
With such an explanation, Zhao Ran roughly understood, it turned out that he still had no qualifications. But he soon became confused again, he was neither a peach tree nor a pear tree, how could he produce peaches and pears?
If you don't understand, you don't want to think about it for the time being, Zhao Ran decided to have the opportunity to ask in person in the future, he remembered that Chu Yangcheng glanced at himself at that time, and said that he had a bad root bone and poor qualifications, which shows that those people in cultivation should have some kind of way to judge whether a person has a root bone through guò vision, and then let Yumo help him see it.
Because the opportunity was not easy to come by, Zhao Ran wanted to seize it desperately. For a "pseudo-backstage" superior, but with a golden finger of memory, Zhao Ran's only choice is to study frantically hard, hoping to use the true skill of "scriptures" to gain a foothold in the Daomen.
Over the next three months, he exhausted the time at his disposal, piled up all of them in the Tibetan scripture building, and recited five or six important classics and more than a dozen types of commentaries in a row.
Among them, the "Tao Te Ching", "Nanhua Sutra", "Chongxu Zhide Sutra" and "Tongxuan Sutra" are particularly important. These four classics, also known as Laozi, Zhuangzi, Liezi and Wenzi, are regarded as the "Four Sons True Classics" by Taoism, and are the most fundamental core works of Taoism, and are the foundation of Qiē Taoist scholarship, scientific rituals, charms, spells, and even self-cultivation.
In the view of Zhao Ran, a "pseudo-believer", "Tao Te Ching" is the most mysterious, "Nanhua Zhenjing" is the most literary and brilliant, "Chongxu Zhide Zhenjing" has a wonderful meaning, and "Tongxuan Zhenjing" has the most famous sayings and aphorisms. It is still very interesting to read and recite it seriously.
What he dislikes the most is the commentary and interpretation of these four canons by latecomers, which, from the perspective of a person of false faith, are mixed with a lot of far-fetched and stiff pulls, and the taste of reading is the same as chewing wax. But the butt commands the head, and since Zhao Ran is sitting on the seat of the Taoist chanting scripture, he must carry these things down.
In three months, he read and memorized more than 20 books, totaling hundreds of thousands of words, if this skill was placed in the world that Zhao Ran had traversed, it would be enough to make him famous and prosperous. You must know that this is the most obscure Taoist classics! Even if they are placed in Wuji Courtyard, the Taoist priests have read more scriptures than him, but there are absolutely only a handful of them who can memorize these scriptures and commentaries word for word.
In the scripture building, among the chanting and Taoist children that Zhao Ran encountered, only Ma Zhili could have such skills, but Ma Zhili had been in the scripture hall for nearly eight years, and the learning progress of the two was not the same. Most of the rest, especially the young fat Taoist priest and the skinny old Taoist priest that Zhao Ran had noticed in the evening class of the scripture hall the first day, had been left behind by Zhao Ran.
As for Zhumeng, one night Zhao Ran couldn't help but provoke this guy, and then after humiliating him in all kinds of ways in reciting scriptures, this guy also began to work hard, and the time he spent reading the scriptures in the Tibetan scripture building every day was doubled.
Zhao Ran has never looked forward to the coming of the first monthly exam in his Daomen career for a moment as he is today, this is the arrogance of brushing pleasure after having a golden finger**, this feeling is ...... That's pretty good!
