The early White Lotus Sect believed in Amitabha Buddha, advocated chanting Buddha and keeping precepts, stipulating that believers should not kill, steal, commit adultery, not lie, and not drink alcohol, and called on its followers to worship their ancestors.

The teachings of the White Lotus are extremely simple, and the scriptures are more accessible than they are to the tradition. This is also one of the reasons why the middle and lower classes are easily accepted, so in the history education that Li Chixin received, he called the White Lotus Sect an organization that led the people to resist oppression.

After a long period of circulation, in the subsequent Yuan and Ming dynasties, the White Lotus Sect organized the people to rise up and overthrow the rulers many times. However, in the Yuan Dynasty, the organization and teachings of the White Lotus Sect underwent some changes, and the organization became lax and full of sects, some of which worshipped Maitreya Buddha and preached Maitreya's rebirth, a religious prophecy that originally belonged to Maitreya's Pure Land method.

In the first year of the Great Dynasty, the imperial court was afraid that the White Lotus Sect was too powerful, so it ordered a ban on the spread of the White Lotus Sect.

However, when Renzong ascended the throne, he immediately restored the legal status of the White Lotus Sect; however, the good times did not last long, and when Yingzong ascended the throne ten years later, the activities of the White Lotus Sect were restricted again; it was precisely because of the capriciousness of the Mengyuan court that the White Lotus cultists in many places had a hostile attitude towards the Yuan Dynasty government.

In addition, the followers of the White Lotus Sect are mostly middle- and lower-class people. Therefore, when the plundering and mergers of the upper strata intensified at the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the social contradictions intensified, some White Lotus sect members took the lead in carrying the banner of anti-Yuan.

The leaders of the Red Turban Rebellion, Han Shantong, Liu Futong, Xu Shouhui, and Zou Pusheng, were almost all White Lotus followers, and they used the prophecy of the birth of King Ming, Amitabha Buddha, and Maitreya's birth to encourage the people to rise up against the Yuan, which had a huge impact on the rule of the Mengyuan court.

Chongzhen's ancestor, Ming Taizu Zhu Chong's eight Guorui, was named Xingzong after returning to the vulgar, and changed his name to Zhu Yuanzhang after participating in Guo Zixing's Red Turban Army, and he himself was one of the White Lotus sectists.

Although these figures and sects are not the same, there are many differences in doctrine, and their organizations, rituals, and activities are also different, but their bodies are more or less bearing the birthmarks of the White Lotus Sect, and not only the old Zhu family thinks that they are actually still the White Lotus Sect, but even the people also call them the White Lotus Sect in general.
