Chapter 94: The Thousand Miles of Buddhism

After leaving Jingzhou, Jiang Liuer went to Xiangzhou Yankong Temple to visit Master Huixiu.

Venerable Hui Xiu is a Buddhist master who has studied all kinds of schools and has studied the "Treatise on Miscellaneous Minds". So, Jiang Liu'er humbly asked Master Huixiu for advice, and it was difficult to ask questions.

After Xiangzhou, Xuanzang went to Zhaozhou again, visited Master Daoshen, and sought to teach the Buddhist classic "Theory of Enlightenment". The Theory of Enlightenment was written by Tianzhu Hali Varman and translated by the famous master of scripture translation Kumarosh. "Reality" refers to the Four Noble Truths, and "Becoming True" is the principle of establishing the Four Noble Truths. It mainly talks about "self-emptiness" and Dharma emptiness, which is an important work from the Hinayana Void Sect to the Mahayana Void Sect.

Jiang Liuer heard in Zhaozhou that the long-admired Zen master Zhiyan Zhuxi was in Dongming Temple, so he immediately went to visit. Sixty-year-old Zen Master Zhiyan, who had already heard that a young monk had come to Xiangzhou, he was very happy to see Jiang Liuer, in order to study Jiang Liuer's knowledge, Zhiyan Zen Master organized more than ten famous monks of Jiang Han who could study the three Tibets to debate with Jiang Liuer.

At the debate meeting, Jiang Liuer quoted the scriptures and corresponded to the scriptures, the debate was invincible, the wonderful debate was endless, and the Zen master Zhiyan who was observing the scene couldn't help nodding his head frequently.

One day, Jiang Liuer and Zen Master Zhiyan sat together and talked about the scriptures and Taoism, and occasionally talked about the topic of meditation and inner demons.

"We have all kinds of phases in the course of our practice. Some people are not very familiar with the teachings, and when some "appearances" appear, they will be particularly attached and happy, which is called "attachment", and in addition, some demons will also appear. So, when you manifest some realms in the process of practice, don't cling to it, and don't feel fear and joy. Zen Master Zhiyan gave his own understanding and taught Jiang Liu'er earnestly.

Then, Zen Master Zhiyan told Jiang Liuer two stories of meditation and inner demons:

Tianzhu had a diligent yogi, and whenever he went deep into Samadhi, a huge scorpion came to him and harassed him, causing him great annoyance. When his master found out, he taught him to hold a pen and make a stroke, and when the scorpion came, he stroked it with a pen. Following the Master's teachings, the yogi used a pen to draw a swastika on the belly of the scorpion. After making his decision, he found that there was a swastika on his belly, and the Master said to him, "That scorpion demon was born in your mind, that is, yourself!" The yogi suddenly woke up and began to let go of his inner demons.

There is also a practitioner of the Lotus Sect, who recites the holy name of Amitabha Buddha every evening to the setting sun. One evening, the sun was setting from the direction of a big tree in the West Mountain, and at this moment, the light appeared in front of the walker's eyes, and in the colorful light and shadow, Amitabha Buddha was shining in front of him. The practitioner was secretly happy in his heart, and after that, he recited Buddha to the tree every night, and he could also see Amitabha Buddha appear every night. One day, he met a Zen master and showed off his realization. The practitioner was puzzled: "How is it possible? In meditation, Amitabha Buddha is clearly present in front of him! How can it be a demon?" The compassionate Zen master handed a string of prayer beads in his hand to the practitioner: "When you see the 'Buddha', throw it out, if it is a Buddha, use it to offer the Buddha, if it is a demon, use it to subdue the demon!" That night, the practitioner did as he said, and the prayer beads were everywhere, and the illusion disappeared. After settling down, the walker found a large dead snake under the tree. The Zen master said to him, "The snake spirit who lives in the tree listens to you chanting the Buddha every night, and has already developed a desire for the Buddha. It transforms the Buddha statue just to please you. Now it's dead, but because of the merits of reciting the Buddha, it's reborn in the Pure Land. "The practitioner has realized the Tao since then, and there is no Buddha and no demons.

Hearing this, Jiang Liu'er seemed to have an understanding, so he got up and folded his palms to thank Zen Master Zhiyan.

Bidding farewell to Zen Master Zhiyan of Zhaozhou, Jiang Liuer came to Chang'an and Luoyang again.

Worship under the door of Master Daoyue of Dajue Temple, and study the "Treatise on Kusha", "The Treatise on Mahayana" and many sutras. At the age of fifteen, Venerable Daoyue became a monk and later learned the Treatise on Attainment of Reality and the Treatise on the Mind of the Miscellaneous Abhidhamma from the two Venerable Masters Zhinian and Zhitong, and the Treatise on the Mahayana and the Treatise on Kusha from the Jiujiang Dhini. Later, Master Daoyue was summoned by the Sui Emperor to live in the Great Meditation Dojo, specializing in the study of the "Treatise on Kusha", and wrote 20 volumes of "The Treatise on Kusha".

Master Daoyue has six brothers, three of whom are monks, his elder brother Master Ming Kuang is proficient in the "Theory of Great Wisdom", and his younger brother Master Ming Luo is good at the "Nirvana Sutra", which can be described as a family of Buddhism.

Under the mature guidance of Master Daoyue, coupled with the mental methods of the masters obtained from many years of study, Jiang Liuer soon became a famous commentator of "The Commentary". When he ascended to the throne to give a lecture on the Mahayana, the listener could fully understand the purpose and understand the meaning of the Mahayana after listening to it.

Chang'an has two great virtues who are proficient in Buddhist classics, Chang and debate, known as the authority of Buddhism, well-known in Kyushu, and scholars like clouds. They all admired Xuanzang (Jiang Liuer) and praised the young Master Xuanzang as "a thousand miles of Buddhism", and Master Xuanzang's name also moved Kyoto.

Chang'an, Luoyang, Yingzhou, Chengdudu, Jingzhou, Yangzhou, Xiangzhou, Zhaozhou......

In the past few years, Jiang Liuer has traveled all over the rivers and mountains of the Tang Dynasty, visiting famous teachers and Buddhist scholars in various Buddhist holy places.

Along the way, he studied the scriptures, asked questions about the scriptures, gave lectures, and had in-depth exchanges with famous Buddhist scholars, and his Buddhist attainments became more and more profound, and formed his unique views on the classic theory of Buddhism.

However, the experience of studying in the past few years has also made Jiang Liuer quite confused, that is: there is one of the biggest problems in the local Buddhist teachings of the Tang Dynasty, this problem is that there are many sects, there are different opinions, and the senior monks are also talking differently, it is difficult to reach a conclusion, and it is difficult to say who is the true meaning of the Buddhist scriptures.

In order to unify the Tang Dynasty Buddhism, seek the original Buddhist scriptures of Lingshan, and realize the profound wisdom of Buddhism from the Tianzhu monk Bopo, Jiang Liuer's heart once again sprouted the desire to "swear to travel to the West and ask questions".

It was a bold and firm idea, which had been growing and growing in Jiang Liu'er's heart for several years, and now it has become even stronger after he visited famous teachers.

He wants to go west to Lingshan! He wants to go to the birthplace of Buddhism to personally feel the profundity of Buddhism, bring the real Buddhist scriptures back to the Tang Dynasty, spread the real Buddhism to the Tang Dynasty, and benefit the people of the Tang Dynasty.

Inside the Daxiong Treasure Hall

In front of a huge statue of the Buddha, Jiang Liu'er, who was dressed in a robe, was praying sincerely: "Buddha, when the disciple Xuanzang was a young man, he wanted to come from afar, and he would leave the Dharma in the near light. Now the disciple vows to travel to the West, to ask the confusion, to seek the true meaning of my Buddha, the disciple has now made up his mind, determined to go to Lingshan, go west to seek the Dharma, and promote the Dharma of my Buddha. ”

When Jiang Liu'er muttered a prayer to "pray for the Buddha to allow his disciples to learn scriptures from the west and bless his disciples to arrive safely at Lingshan ......", in a trance, the statue that has always been solemn in his daily life seemed to be smiling at this moment, as if he was very appreciative of this Jiang Liu'er.
