Chapter 109: Dervishe
Luoyang Guanghua Temple
"Amitabha! The poor monk Xuanzang has traveled all the way here, and he has come here to place orders and disturb the great master. ”
Looking at this tall, handsome young monk, dressed in gray monk's robes, carrying a large bag, and his face full of dust, Master Huishen smiled.
"Lao Wei knows you, you are the Xuanzang Master who preached the scriptures in Chang'an City, right?
"It's the poor monk. Jiang Liu'er folded her hands in salute.
With a bright eye, he saw that Master Huishen's clothes on the other side were shabby, very eye-catching, and the clothes were patched one after another, and he couldn't see the original color of the clothes for a long time.
"The Buddhism in the world is a family, you don't have to be restrained, I'll let someone arrange a room for you to rest. Hui Shen said.
called a little novice, and Huishen asked him to take Xuanzang to rest.
"Thank you, Mage. Jiang Liu'er thanked him.
The little novice led the way, and Jiang Liu'er followed behind with his bag on his back, and the two walked through the various buildings of the temple.
The whole temple of Guanghua Temple sits in the north and faces south, the layout is regular, the style is simple, it is a long courtyard, there are the Tianwang Palace, the Daxiong Treasure Palace, the Receiving Palace, the Tibetan Scripture Pavilion, etc., even the platform and the well of the Han Dynasty are still faintly visible, and there are pilgrims donating to build the release pool, the stone arch bridge...
Passing through these buildings, there are the east and west wings where the monks live.
"Uncle Xuanzang, this is it. Jiang Liu'er was taken to a room in the West Wing, and the little novice left.
The room is simple and bright, with only necessary items such as beds, desks, chairs, lamps, and teacups.
Jiang Liu'er took off her bags, washed up, and read the scriptures for a while, and then walked out of the room.
On the walls of the wing room are many handwritten French words by Venerable Hui Shen:
"It's easy to practice and it's hard to keep the precepts, and it's like a demon if you don't keep the precepts. ”
"Keep the precepts, be calm, be quiet, and do nothing, and get rid of the ship. ”
"Virtuous as a white lotus, the line of liberation crosses the crowd to the other side. ”
"All good roots arise from the precepts, and the precepts come first, and the Dharma resides in perpetuation. ”
Jiang Liu'er looked at it while walking, and there were eight permanent precepts of the monks of Guanghua Temple posted on the wall in front of him, the contents of which were: 1. Hold the precept of not catching money (all monks do not accept money offerings, and the temple does not set up merit boxes); 2. One meal in the middle of the day (the monks only eat one meal a day, and no longer eat and drink after the afternoon, including fruits, etc.); 3. Walking feet (monks need to go to the head of the Buddha, and the head of the head is started after August 15 every year); 4. Begging (a bhikshu is a beggar, begging for Dharma to earn a life, begging for food to support his life, and begging for food to maintain the true character of a monk); 5. Not accepting guest monks (resident monks do not accept gifts from foreign monks, if there is an offering to be handed over to the permanent residence, the deacon of the guest hall should give a return gift to the guest monk and treat them equally); 6. All offerings go to the permanent residence (all the offerings received by the monk are handed over to the permanent residence and distributed uniformly); The three mantles and bowls do not leave the body, and the eighteen kinds of things are complete (the monks cannot leave the three mantles and bowls, and the eighteen kinds of things must be carried when the head of the Buddha); If you don't turn into a fate and don't ask for help, you can only die in the heart and give birth to the Tao).
When you go to the depths of the temple, you can still see signs such as "Please do not put money in money" and "Watch out for the creatures under your feet". The places where the monks live and practice are placed with signs that say "Pilgrims are not allowed to pass".
After careful observation, Jiang Liuer also found that this temple does not set up merit boxes, and pilgrims are not allowed to put money. Incense sticks of different sizes and lengths are placed next to the incense burner, and pilgrims who come to worship the Buddha can take them at will, and the temple does not accept a penny. Incense stands in front of each Buddha statue are placed with incense sticks of different sizes for pilgrims to worship the Buddha, and most of these incense sticks are left by pilgrims who come to burn incense and worship the Buddha.
Walking through the Guanghua Temple, the monks who came and went were all old clothes and rags, and Jiang Liuer did not see monks who did not wear patched clothes at all.
"There is no Amitabha Buddha in the south. ”
A Buddha horn suddenly sounded in the back.
Jiang Liuer looked back and saw that it was Master Huishen, the abbot of the temple.
"Master, your Guanghua Temple is also an ancient temple of more than 100 years, in terms of appearance, it can be described as solemn and majestic, and the momentum is extraordinary, but why do you live so hard? There is only one meal a day, and there is not even a good robe and monk's robe?"
"According to the Dharma, monks are not allowed to covet pleasures. Each monk is allowed to have only two sets of clothes. If he pays attention to what he wears, he will have desires and greed, which will not be good for his cultivation. Before I became a monk, I had a lot of greed, so I was very strict with myself, and I wore this outfit from the day I became a monk. Master Huishen said.
Jiang Liu'er looked at it, and he Huishen was really wearing a hundred clothes, and the patches were decorated with patches. Even the little monk beside him had patches on his clothes, dark patches on them, and light patches on them.
"We have food, two sets of clothes for a lifetime, these are enough, we live very freely, what do we need money, clothes, and these things?"
Listening to Hui Shen's words, Jiang Liu'er was dumbfounded for a while.
"By the way, in order to save others and save themselves, all the monks in this temple will start to practice penance tomorrow, are you willing to go with you?" Master Huishen asked Jiang Liu'er.
"Master, this is the proper meaning of the monk's cultivation, and the poor monks naturally want to go, but they don't know where to go?"
Master Huishen nodded approvingly and said, "The foothold of this trip is Chang'an, the capital city. ”
Early the next morning, the monks of Guanghua Temple gathered in front of the mountain gate, and Huishen distributed necessary items such as bowls, warm clothes, and bedding to each monk, as well as scriptures and umbrellas. The destination of the trip is Chang'an, which is nearly 800 miles away from here.
Under the leadership of Hui Shen, a team of fifty foot monks set off in the morning mist, and Jiang Liu'er followed behind Hui Shen.
Along the way, the foot monks of Guanghua Temple walked on foot.
When walking, they all lowered their heads without exception, in order to always pay attention to the beings under their feet and avoid inadvertently trampling on ants, insects and other small creatures.
During the day, the monks walk with their heads bowed, resting only when they are reading the scriptures or having fasting.
At night, they slept on the roadside or under the trees, never staying at an inn. For a place to stay, the monks of Guanghua Temple have very low requirements, as long as they can shelter from the wind and rain and have water to drink, they regard the annual foot walking as a penance.
On the way, the monks would often come across dead kittens, dogs, or other small animals, and without saying a word, they would shovel them up and bury them in the ground so that they could have a place to live.
On the way, there are also many Buddhist believers or well-wishers who provide them with water, rice and noodles, vegetables, fruits and other food, and they will thank them one by one and chant sutras for these people.
There was a pious female believer who followed the team of foot monks, and saw her clasped her hands together, nine steps and one kowtow, measuring the distance in the way of "five bodies throwing herself to the ground". Her forehead, knees, and hands were covered in calluses. Every time she knelt down, her whole body was prostrate forward, and when she kowtowed, she had to knock her head to the ground, and at the end of the day, she could only walk more than 20 miles.
