6. Emperor Chongzhen's bleak childhood
To the south of Ningshou Palace in the eastern part of the Forbidden City, there is a palace with red walls and green tiles, called Nansansuo, which was the place where the prince lived in the Qing Dynasty. The predecessor of the South Third Institute was the Ciqing Palace of the Ming Dynasty. In December of the 38th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1610), Zhu Youzhen, the emperor of Chongzhen, was born here.
Zhu Youzhen's father was Taichang Emperor Zhu Changluo, and his grandfather was Wanli Emperor Zhu Yijun. Because Emperor Wanli favored Zhu Changxun, the third son born to Concubine Zheng Guifei, the eldest son of the palace maid, Prince Zhu Changluo, has been unstable, and his children have not been treated normally since they were young.
When Zhu Changluo was the crown prince, he had 7 sons, 5 of whom died young. When the eldest son Zhu Youxiao was 15 years old, his biological mother Wang Cairen was beaten to death by his father's favored "Xi Li" (Li Xuanzhi, who lived in the West Palace). When the fifth son Zhu Youzhen was 5 years old, his biological mother Liu Shunu was punished by his father and died unjustly. These two motherless children were handed over to the pampered and domineering "Xi Li" to "raise".
finally survived until Emperor Wanli died, and Zhu Changluo ascended the throne as Emperor Taichang. But due to his weak body and excessive indulgence, he died after only one month as emperor. After the 16-year-old eldest son Zhu Youxiao ascended the throne as the Emperor of the Apocalypse, he complained to "Xi Li" and said: "The selection of servants is slow and abused, and I cry day and night." Huang Kao (father) knew that he was wrong, and he comforted him from time to time...... How can the outer court know all about my suffering. The elder brother is still like this, and the treatment of his younger brother Zhu Youzhen, who is also under the "raising" of "Xi Li", can be imagined.
After Emperor Tianqi ascended the throne, he immediately changed his younger brother, who was 5 years younger than him, to be raised by "Dong Li" (his father's other surname Li was chosen to serve and was called "Dong Li" because he lived in the East Palace), and named his younger brother King Xin the following year. So Zhu Youzhen lived in Ciqing Palace, his birthplace, with his mother "Dong Li". Zhu Youzhen first had to pay homage to heaven every morning, and then greet his mother-in-law. When he missed his biological mother, he avoided the surveillance of the eunuch Wei Zhongxian, secretly took some silver taels and appointed his cronies and eunuchs to go to the Xishan cemetery to sacrifice on his behalf, and repeatedly instructed: "You can tell me clearly, just like I went to pay tribute." In the fifth year of the Apocalypse, "Dong Li" was persecuted and died by Wei Zhongxian, and Zhu Youzhen's life was even more sad.
In the seventh year of the Apocalypse, the 23-year-old Zhu Youxiao died of illness, he had no descendants, and his 18-year-old brother Zhu Youzhen ascended the throne as Emperor Chongzhen. Emperor Chongzhen posthumously honored his biological mother as the queen and moved the coffin to Qingling to be buried with his father, but he could no longer remember the appearance of his biological mother. "History of the Ming Dynasty" said that Emperor Chongzhen asked his grandmother to guide the painter to paint the portrait of his biological mother, and welcomed him into the palace from the Zhengyang Gate to the noon gate of the palace, so that the old palace maids could identify it. As a result, some people said that the painting was very similar. Some people say that the painting doesn't look like it. Emperor Chongzhen knelt down after hearing this, and tears fell like rain.
