20. Smell the incense teaching

Wenxiangjiao is a folk religion of the Ming Dynasty, one of the branches of the White Lotus Sect, also known as the Eastern Mahayana Religion.

During the Wanli (1573~1619) period, it was founded by Wang Sen, Shifokou, Luanzhou, Hebei. Claiming to have saved a fox, the fox cut off its tail and gave it, there is a strange fragrance; in order to call on the disciples, many people belong to it, so it is called the Wenxiang Sect, and the self-proclaimed Wenxiang Sect Master, the disciples are all over Hebei, Shandong, Jiangxi, Jin, Henan, Qin, Sichuan and other places. Believe in the Buddha of the Burning Lamp, the Buddha of Shakya, and the Buddha of the Future, and preach the ideas of the end of the three periods of the tribulation and returning to the source. In the forty-first year of Wanli (1613), he was imprisoned for the second time and died in prison. His son Haoxian and his apprentice Xu Hongru continued to preach, and in the second year of the Apocalypse (1622), he organized an uprising. Wang Sen's son Sun Fu changed the Wenxiang Sect to Qingchamen, passed down from generation to generation, and began to decline during the Jiaqing period.

Wenxiang Sect is a large-scale, serious harm, and long-lasting cult organization in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the founder Wang Sen, a native of Jizhou, Tianfu in the Ming Dynasty, the original surname is Shi, the name is natural, and the queen of the Emperor has been sheltered, so he assumes the surname Wang. Wang Sen's father and son were very secretive about the teachings of this religion, intending to deify this religion and make people not know its origin, but the Wang family admitted (in fact, it was self-written) the legend that the demon fox gave incense and established the religion with incense. In fact, the Wenxiang Sect originated from a "Mahayana Sect" of the Luozu Sect, but due to the late emergence of the Wenxiang Sect, the main purpose of the various doctrinal books "Nine Lotus Sutras" is similar to that of other folk religions.

Wang Sen founded the Wenxiang Sect before 1595, and in Luanzhou, where he lived, he created a religious holy place - the "Wenxiang Sect Capital" Shifokou.

According to legend, the building area of the stone Buddha mouth more than 300 years ago was not large, and the circumference was only four miles. But the scale of the building is particularly particular. First of all, there are "front pavilions (Zhang Tingzi), back shops (back shops), East Valley (Lei Gu Zhuang, later renamed Lei Zhuang), and West Building (Xu Jia Lou)" around the four sides to be responsible for receiving "tributary" believers from all over the world. The stone Buddha mouth itself is rigorous in structure and full of style. The walls around it are firm, and the gates are majestic; Two archways are built at both ends of the east and west streets in the city, which are engraved with "the master of the green mountain" and "the reincarnation of Maitreya" respectively. As the head of the sect, the Wang family shows a special style - the inner courtyard has a living room, a study, an embroidery building, and a garden, and the side courtyard has a guard hall, a martial arts field, a dining room, and a fish pond...... Outside the city, there are huge temple complexes: at the foot of the northeast hill of the city is the "Temple of the Gods" (later generations used to call it the "Hail Temple"), and the temple houses a two-meter-high red granite stone statue of Maitreya Buddha (Stone Buddha Village, from which the mouth of the stone Buddha is named). Every year during the Dragon Boat Festival, there is a grand temple fair that lasts for a month. The monks in the temple received several jars of sesame oil from the incense donors. Villagers say that the temple fair 60 years ago still has such a scale); Xiguan is the old man's temple, Niangniang temple, land temple, and Sanguan temple; Nanguan is the Bodhi Temple (the main hall of the temple is dedicated to the Buddha with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes, and behind him is the Buddha of Wei Dao holding a vajra), the Eight Immortals Temple, and the City God Temple. Among them, the "Divine Temple" and the Bodhi Temple are the most spectacular, covering an area of 100 acres. These temples are all carved beams and painted buildings, with yellow glazed tiles roofing, showing a golden splendor (these buildings were not destroyed until the Cultural Revolution 40 years ago, and many of the artifacts in the temples were stolen. In recent years, some villagers have found the "description" text of the bronze Buddha in the Dongling Tomb of the Qing Dynasty in Zunhua, which has "from the stone Buddha mouth of Luan County"; Some villagers found "Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes Like Buddha" in the eight temples outside Chengde, and the back of the Buddha was engraved with the words "Qingshan Stone Buddha Mouth" and "Thirty-seven Years of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty". )。

More magnificent, is similar to the "Imperial Mausoleum" of the royal mausoleum - covers an area of 100 acres, erected 24 "turtle and dragon openwork tablet" (openwork for "7 eyes"). The people of the village call the stele base "赑屃" as "Wang Ba", and the title of the whole stele is "Wang Ba Da Stone Stele". Regarding the stone stele, the villagers still have legends that "the Japanese devils bombarded it without shattering" and "the traitor Liu Zuozhou did not fall". **There were only 6 left, which were buried in the ground by the "four olds". Some villagers still keep a stone tablet "dragon head"; Villagers say it is easy to dig if they are buried in the ground. In addition, 40 years ago, "breaking the four olds" had dug a tomb, and the Mingtang tablet indicated that the identity of the tomb owner was "Road General", and the male tomb owner and his seven wives and concubines were buried in the tomb, and the total weight of the gold ornaments was only one or two). Also, there are many maids of the Wang family, and there are those who do not marry and die in the Wang family for life, and they set up another grave in the north of Chen Mountain, called "orphan girl grave".

There are still many legends about Wang Sen's "enlightenment" preaching and the mythical rise of the "religious capital". But if we look dispassionately at the splendid architecture of the holy places of religion such as the Vatican, Jerusalem and Mecca today, and the devotion and fanaticism of the "pilgrims" that are difficult for ordinary people to understand. will rationally deduce the inevitability of the rise of the "religious capital" of Shifokou back then.

Wang Haoxian, Xu Hongru. After Wang Sen's death, the third son Haoxian inherited the power of the church, and his people were quite politically ambitious, during his tenure, on the one hand, he cooperated with the imperial court, and on the other hand, secretly planned with Xu Hongru in Shandong, Zhou Yin in Beizhi and other sect leaders in order to seize the world. In the second year of Ming Qi (1622), Xu Hongru, Yu Hongzhi and others led a peasant uprising. Just as the righteous army and the Ming army were fighting bloodily, Wang Haoxian hid in Luanzhou Shifokou. After the failure of the uprising, Wang Haoxian fled south with his wife and concubine and son. In the winter of the third year of the Apocalypse (1623), Wang Haoxian was arrested in Yangzhou and was killed at the beginning of the fourth year of the Apocalypse (1624).
