Kunpeng!

The Chinese character "Peng", according to classics such as "Shuowen" and "Zilin", is the ancient character of "phoenix". "Shuowen" said: "The phoenix flies, and the birds are tens of thousands, so they take friends as the word for friends." It can be seen that the "peng" to the left of "Peng" comes from its status as the king of birds. In terms of etymology, it can be speculated that Dapeng and Phoenix originated from the same bird totem of the ancestors, and gradually diverged with different characteristics.

The big bird "Xi You" described in the "Divine Strange Scripture - Zhonghuang Sutra" is about another name for the Dapeng bird: "Kunlun Mountain has a copper pillar, which is high into the sky, and the so-called 'heavenly pillar' is also, surrounded by three thousand miles, and the circumference is like cutting." -- There is a big bird on it, its name is Xiyou, southward, the left wing covers the prince of the east, and the right wing covers the queen mother of the west; there is no feather on the back, 19,000 miles, the queen mother of the west ascends the wing, and the prince of the east is also. "Notes on the Book of Water" quoted the "Divine Sutra", and added "its bird inscription said: There are birds Xi have, green and red Huanghuang, no song and no food, east over the east prince, west over the west queen mother, the queen mother wants to the east, ascend to the self-pass, yin and yang must be together, but will benefit the work." These are some side explanations: the Dapeng bird has green and red colors, does not chirp or eat, and only a small piece of featherless place on its back is 19,000 miles wide, which shows how huge its size is. -- It turns out that the distance from West Kunlun to the East China Sea is only the ear between the wings of the Dapeng bird!

Peng Picture Peng Picture Ancient Indian Mythology "Dragon Babu" After Buddhism was introduced into China, it was named the Dapeng Golden-winged Bird, and its huge wings spread out for 3.36 million li; when the Dapeng Gold-winged Bird was born, the body was bright, and the gods of all walks of life mistakenly thought it was the fire sky and worshiped it; the Dapeng Golden-winged Bird fed on the dragon, it flew in the air, inspected the dragon that should be killed in the sea, and when the dragon was found, it used its wings to fan the sea water, and became two halves, and the dragon saw this formation, and trembled with fear, and lost consciousness and waited to be devoured; the Dapeng Goldfinch could eat a dragon king and five hundred small dragons in one day。

Because of the great description of Peng's supernatural in Zhuang Zhou and Hindu mythology, after Buddhism was introduced to China, Dapeng's description in Chinese writing was further presumptuous, and it was further anthropomorphized and alienated.

The people, gods, Buddhas, and monsters in "Journey to the West" have the widest and largest magical powers of the Buddha, and there are only about three "people" who can't help but let the Buddha subdue: Sun Wukong, the six-eared macaque, and the Dapeng golden-winged eagle. Wukong and the macaque were originally a family, and Dapeng and Rulai were also a "family" with a relationship. Let's listen to Rulai's confession:

"Since that chaotic time, the heavens are opened to the son, the earth is opened to the ugly, life is born in the yin, the heaven and the earth are reunited, and all things are born. All things have beasts and birds, and the beasts are long with the unicorn, and the birds are long with the phoenix. The phoenix has to be mated again, giving birth to peacocks and Dapeng. The peacock was the most evil when it was born, and it could eat people, and it could suck people in one bite for forty-five miles. I was on the top of the snowy mountain, cultivating into a golden body, and he had already sucked me into my stomach. I wanted to go out through his door, lest I stain my true body, but I cut open his back and stepped up to the spiritual mountain. If you want to hurt his life, you should be persuaded by the Buddhas, and hurt the peacock as hurting my mother, so I left him at the Lingshan meeting and named him the Buddha's mother Peacock King Bodhisattva. Dapeng and he were born to the same mother, so they have some kinship. ”

Sun Monkey was also clever and humorous, and then Rulai's words, he sneered: "Rulai, if you compare it like this, you are still the nephew of the goblin." ”

Na Rulai did not refute, but said, "That monster must be my way to get it." "Look, the Dapeng bird is really a good supernatural power: if my nephew Buddha doesn't come to visit my uncle in person, how can your grandson monkey ambush me?

In another legendary Chinese novel, "The Complete Biography of Yue Yue", the national hero Yue Fei turned out to be the human incarnation of the Dapeng Goldfinch Bird. It is recorded in the book as follows: Song Huizong sacrificed to heaven on New Year's Day, and the sacrificial table was written to the "Jade Emperor", but when copying the sacrificial table, he mistakenly wrote a little bit of the word "jade" on the word "big", and became the "Emperor of the Dog". The Jade Emperor was furious and said, "The Emperor is forgiving, but the Dog Emperor is unforgiving!" He sent the Red Whiskered Dragon to the lower realm, born in the Jin Kingdom, and became the fourth prince of the old wolf lord of the Jin Kingdom, Jin Wushu, and the Jade Emperor wanted to let the Golden Vulture disturb the Central Plains in order to repay the hatred of the "Dog Emperor". Shakyamuni Buddha of the Western Heaven was afraid that after the Red Whiskered Dragon went to the lower realm, no one would be able to subdue him, so he sent the Dapeng Bird that specialized in eating dragons to the lower realm, reincarnated as Yue Fei, and protected the Song Dynasty.

This Yue Fei's predecessor, the Dapeng Golden-winged Bird, is indeed upright and brave and abnormal: in front of the Buddha, because he couldn't bear the lady bat (later incarnated as Qin Hui's wife Wang), he farted again and again, and pecked him to death with a mouth;

It stands to reason that the Dapeng bird eats dragons, so what kind of red-whiskered dragon, iron-armed dragon, is it okay? But why was the dragon killed by the bat on trumped-up charges in advance? Approximately, the author Qian Cai also believes that once turned into a human body, the fierce and brave ability is useless in the face of the villain's tricks. -- What can I do?

There are many legends and myths about the Dapeng bird among the peoples of the East and the West.

In the Tibetan creation ballad "Song of the Formation of the Sparta", it is said: "Heaven and earth are mixed together, and separating heaven and earth is Dapeng", and it is believed that Dapeng became the ancestor of the Tibetan people. In Tibetan Buddhist statues, all the angry Buddha statues have a Dapeng goldfinch flying on their heads, and many Tibetans will wear the Dapeng goldfinch badge with them, believing that this will bring good luck, wisdom and strength.

Yunnan Bai area, the ancient Dali people think that the dragon is strange and frequent floods, so that Dali almost into the dragon Ze, and the dragon only respects the tower, afraid of Dapeng, so, built the famous Chongsheng Temple three towers, the top of the tower each cast a Dapeng golden-winged bird.
