Chapter 13: Turbulent Clouds
Isis walks alone in the dark underworld of Estero.
The passage of the Dark River was narrower and more tortuous than he remembered. He didn't know why he had come back here, or if the memories had deceived him, they had never been rescued and were still hovering underground.
But Naria wasn't behind him.
He realized it was nothing more than a dream. He rarely dreamed, and the few dreams he had were not very pleasant.
He tried to wake up, probably successfully opening his eyes a few times, but before he could wake up, he was dragged back into the same dream again, over and over again, restless and helpless.
He no longer struggles. He couldn't see through the darkness in his dreams, which somewhat unsettled him. He could feel more and more shadows around him, shadows and shadows, aimless like him, walking and stopping, not knowing where to go.
He stretched out his hand and waved, and the blurred black shadow in front of him dissipated and gathered, with endless sorrow and despair, and let out a long sigh that made Iss feel a chill to the bone.
He unconsciously quickened his pace, and at last he stumbled and ran in the seemingly endless passage, chased by unknown fears, as if he could never stop.
Then he bumped into someone.
He felt the cold, smooth surface of the metal armor. His head was only up to the other's waist, but not because the man was unusually tall, but because he had somehow shrunk back to the size of a ten-year-old.
When a cold light flickered from the corner of his eye, he realized that the lines between the other man's waist and abdomen were unusually familiar to him.
He looked up and saw Scott Christus's pale, expressionless face in complete darkness.
His eyes swirled with black swirls.
Isis woke up from his dream, drenched in a cold sweat.
The heart has never been beating so violently, as if it is about to burst out of the chest in the next moment. He curled himself up like a baby, shivering incessantly, until the panic dissipated in the soothing sunlight passing through the window.
It's not that he never doubted that Scott was still alive, he just stubbornly refused to believe it.
The half-closed door was pushed open, and Ed walked in briskly, half of a hard-boiled egg still in his mouth.
"You're awake!" he said mumbly, noticing that his friend's face wasn't very good.
"Are you alright?" he asked worriedly. Almost as soon as he returned to his room, he collapsed on his bed and fell asleep, even the blanket that Ed had put on him.
"Just a little tired. Iss said lightly, brushing his messy blonde hair with his fingers. His hair was down to his shoulders and was a little too long. If Scott comes back, I don't know if he will still be recognized.
Ed jumped on the chair next to his bed and crouched down, handing him a plate of fruit, eggs, and a few slices of cold bread, "Are you hungry?" ”
Iss shook his head, he didn't have much appetite: "Where's Alan?"
"Still in his room, with the sneaky hunter. Ed rolled his eyes and swallowed the bread, he forgot to take the water, "Did you think he would tell Alan?"
"He's supposed to just be talking to Eren about the skeleton knight. ”
"That's right, then he'll have to tell Eren why you ran underground and almost died, and Eren will know it's all my fault. Ed tossed the plate aside, holding his stomach with a wrinkled face, and he began to feel a stomachache. Some things are really better not to think about it.
"That's not your fault. Iss tried to reassure him, "We can also choose not to." ”
"I bet you Alan wouldn't think so. Ed said with a sad face.
And he wasn't wrong at all.
Bye came out of Alan's room near noon, looking worried. He left without saying hello to the children, and Ed didn't even have time to find out some news. It took a while for Eren to appear, and his face made Ed retract back into Is's room.
"He's going to kill me!" he had written the idea on his face!" he wailed as he crouched miserably in the corner of the room.
Iss almost couldn't hold back the smile on his face. He ripped off the cloak from the back of his chair and put it over Ed: "Don't worry, he can't see you now." ”
There was silence under the cloak for a moment, and then Ed's muffled voice sounded: "Thank you, really, I feel safe." Hey, can you go out and tell Alan I'm home? He can't see my horse and luggage anyway, did I tell you I cast invisibility spells on them?"
"Next time, you'd better remember to give your horse a silence spell. Alan said coldly at the door. Ed's horse was neighing in the yard.
Ed froze under his cloak. Then he jerked down his cloak, his messy black hair, and looked like he was dead: "It's all my fault! Alan Derian, I shouldn't have dragged Naria and Isse to find some ice dragons, and caused them to fall into the water and run into the skeleton knight......"
"What are you looking for?" Alan's voice was unusually high-pitched.
Ed realizes that he has just dug a deeper pit for his corpse.
"Dragon ......," he said in despair, completely resigned to fate, "you know, it's the kind of monster that is big and evil, and can fly and breathe fire......"
"How do you know there's a dragon there? Alan asked sharply.
"I found a map in the castle. Ed replied stunned, "Do you know there's a dragon there?"
"There is no such thing as a dragon, there was no such thing as a dragon a long time ago. Alan flatly denied it. The muscles in the corners of his eyes jumped uncontrollably.
"I think you're right. Ed said sincerely, his passion for adventure had been shattered, and he had no interest in any treasures or monsters now.
"I'm a fool, I'll never drag my friends to do such a dangerous thing again. He raised his hands and swore solemnly: "Otherwise I will become an immortal monster and wander in the darkness forever!"
Isis shuddered. Alan gave him a worried look.
"I think it's time for you to go back to the castle, Master Singel, and if you leave now, you'll be home before dark. Allen's voice was cold and hard, and if it weren't for the fact that Ed was more or less Scott's nephew, he would probably really teach him a lesson.
Ed quickly jumped up from the corner, "Immediately, immediately, Mr. Delian!" Although it was not yet the scheduled time to go home, a simple excuse of "I don't think I was suitable to be a paladin" would solve the problem, and he couldn't wait to go home now.
He trotted out of the door, only to be pulled back by Allen. The lame, ordinary-looking carpenter whispered a few words in his ear.
Ed Singhal lived surprisingly long. When he recalls his long life, after so many wonderful, dangerous and exciting legends, the whispers of Alan Caver in his ear on that sunny early spring noon many years ago are still the most terrifying moments of his life.
"Is there really a dragon there, Alan?" asked Ise softly after Ed left. He could sense the tension that Eren had hidden in his anger at the mention of the dragon. None of the adventurers had ever mentioned to him the creature that the dragon had apparently occupied a significant place in the legend, and it seemed strange to think about it now.
"Once, perhaps. Alan replied vaguely, "But it's long gone." ”
"There's your mark in the passage underground, Naria doesn't recognize, but I recognize it, I've seen the Nia paintings," Isis recalls the cats, big and small, "You've been there. ”
"Yes. Alan reluctantly admitted, "But not to find the dragon!"
"What are you looking for, skeleton warrior?" Iss never asks questions that the other party obviously doesn't want to answer, that's how he avoids conflict. He didn't want to embarrass anyone he cared about, and he didn't bother to embarrass those he didn't.
"Actually, that's right. Alan was happy to get rid of the topic of dragons, although it didn't get much better now: "Then there were a few big floods in the mountains, and we thought it was impossible for the skeleton warriors to stay there. ”
"And alive. It's a strange word to say "alive," but Iss couldn't think of any other word for a moment: "Lydia said that it meant that the necromancer who awakened it was still alive." ”
Alan moved uneasily, and to cover up, he walked over to Is's side and sat heavily in his chair.
"You remember a lot of things. You should have been very young then. He said.
"I don't have much to remember, so I'll try to write everything down. Scott was always away from home at that time, and I loved the days when you were all at the castle. Isis said with a smile.
Alan remembered that Iss had never asked where Lagun, Nia, and Lydia had gone. It always made him feel relieved and uneasy, like there was a trap around him that was always on the verge of breaking out. He didn't know when the mountains of secrets would crumble and make everything uncontrollable.
That day may not be far off.
Beye's new armor left no footprints on the polished marble floor. This is a sacred place belonging to the god of water, and it does not tolerate any form of defilement.
Every time he walked into the temple, he was proud that he could become a knight of the god of water. He was born into a family of hunters, and his twin brother Jules was a true hunter, and freedom was his only faith, and if he had to choose a name for his faith, it would probably be Nacida, the wild and elusive goddess of the forest.
And although he always likes to appear in the exact same hunter costume as Jules, he has already passed the test of the god of water many years ago and became a paladin. This quiet, tidy, sacred and solemn place did not make him feel at home like the forest he grew up in, but it felt more at home.
He stood there straight, pondering the mystery of fate, until a voice pulled him back to reality.
"Sorry to keep you waiting. Sanks Browder nodded to him with scrupulous politeness, "I'm afraid that Lord Fetcher will have to stay in Stonebuch for a long time, and if you bring any important news, I wonder if I can pass it on on my behalf?"
"Absolutely. Bye tried not to let his disappointment slip through his face.
As he expected, the news he brought did not surprise Browder.
"We have long suspected that the war of a few years ago - whether it was Lutgar's or Anktan's, was the intervention of necromancers. Thankfully, the gods stopped their plot before they could bring more death. It's not surprising that one or two escaped necromancers wander the darkness, and we'll tell all forces of justice and light to be careful, but I'm sure it won't be too much of a problem. Browder bowed to him, "Thank you for your vigilance, brother. ”
"But that might be ......," he hesitated. In fact, he didn't think there would be much of a problem, but Allen's heavy expression gave him too many bad premonitions.
Browder waited patiently for a moment, then continued: "A powerful mage, perhaps, but still not to fear. ”
Baie was silent and nodded.
As he walked out of the temple, he couldn't help but look up in an unusually dim sky. Far on the horizon, gray-black clouds torn by the wind were gradually accumulating.
A storm is coming.
