Chapter 11 Multi-purpose Hall
The next day. I woke up with no sound, just like I felt when everyone else in my dorm room had gone to class and I was the only one who had risen late because of snooze.
In the first moment, in a trance before my mind fully woke up from my sleep, I had forgotten what had happened last night.
I sat up in bed and looked around, and what I saw told me that the peaceful sleep I had been a dream was a dream, and that I was in the middle of a sinister reality.
On the bed closest to me lay the girl who had been injected with an unknown liquid by Director Li last night, her back facing me, and I could still see a dark purple bruise on a section of her naked neck.
The other twenty-six beds in the room sat twenty-six people who had been brought here with me last night, in the same posture as me, with the same eyes we looked at each other, with the same confusion and fear in our eyes, and one more thing: we seemed to have forgotten to breathe, to speak, to forget that our bodies were still at our disposal.
"It's breakfast time, line up in order of beds. Director Li appeared at the door of the room and said to us in a calm tone.
We began to get dressed, got out of bed, and consciously lined up in a straight line and were led by Director Li to another corner of the room.
The windows of the room were curtained and rows of blinding incandescent lights were shining above our heads, and while I waited for breakfast, I finally had a chance to take a look at the structure of the function room.
The place where we slept last night was blocked by a huge screen, and became a separate dormitory, and the bathroom was at the end of this dormitory, both men and women.
And it's incredibly cold inside, like a giant refrigerated cabinet (which I didn't know until later).
At the other end of the bedroom is a tall wooden door from which we entered the multipurpose room last night.
Strangely enough, I didn't find anything suspicious around this close exit, and it just stood there unobstructed, as if it were determined that no one would have the courage to escape from here.
At the top of the screen there was a small door that could only be passed through by one person, and I couldn't tell how big the multipurpose room was until I stepped out of it.
On the other side of the screen is a more spacious hall with dining tables and chairs, but without windows.
Our breakfast was delivered from the only window at the end of the hall, and we went to the window to get our share, and then found a place to sit down and start eating.
The whole process has been supervised by Director Li. Xu Tong and I sat together, chewing on the steamed buns in our mouths while peeking at Director Li's position with my eyes to find an opportunity to talk to Xu Tong.
Xu Tong ate quickly, and never raised his head once, not giving me a chance to speak at all.
It wasn't until he started to clean up the dishes that I couldn't help but step on him, but he was still indifferent and quickly left the table.
I lowered my head to eat, scolding Xu Tong for his waste, but I suddenly noticed a spoon placed in front of my plate, facing an empty wall in the room.
This must have been left by Xu Tong, he was telling me something. I quickly took the spoon into my plate and ate as I ate and kept looking at the empty wall.
As I looked at it, I finally noticed a rectangular shadow on the wall, or rather, a hidden door.
I swallowed the last bite of steamed buns and looked back to Xu Tong, only to find that most of them had finished breakfast and were queuing up to return to the dormitory on the other side of the screen.
