Chapter 31: The Stone Age
The island does not have to worry about food, there are all kinds of shellfish and crabs on the beach, and there are some unknown seaweeds, if you dive you can catch lobster and abalone, this delicacy is really a luxury jewelry in my life, usually not if you want to eat it, because it is really expensive, very expensive, in reality, only the rich can eat this kind of thing every day.
Anyway, the products here are very rich, although they are not casual, but for me alone, the products here are indeed a little excessive, a little effort is a big meal, the most important thing is that the Chinese have something we dare not eat.
However, this small island is too small to store fresh water, although there are many coconuts on the island, but the body will not be able to stand the coconut water after drinking it for a long time, if you want to survive for a long time, you must have pure fresh water, and the only way to get fresh water here is rain and dew, I have to make a more efficient rainwater collector.
The first thing I thought about was that there was bamboo on this island, and although there were not many of them, it was the best material to collect rainwater, so I guess I immediately came up with the idea of making a rainwater collector first.
Looking at the sailor knife that had been damaged in my hand, this was the only iron tool I used, it used to be a chisel, and it had to be used with a piece of wood, and I didn't know how long it would last, and I had to find a tool that could replace it, and it occurred to me that there were many rocks on the east side of the island, and there should be suitable stones for tools.
Soon I came to the east of the island, after all, the island is only about 800 meters long from east to west, and some boulders with different shapes protrude seven or eight meters from the sea surface, which is also the highest place on the island.
I don't know what kind of rocks they are, but they are not suitable for stone tools, because they are not very hard and break when you fall hard.
When I was distressed that these stones could not be made into stone tools, I woke up to find that there were some black stones wrapped in these rocks, mostly pebbles without edges and corners. (I don't understand geology, don't spray if it's wrong)
These black pebbles, large and small, are so hard that you should be able to make stone tools out of them, but they are the hardest things on the island anyway, and I have no other choice.
I found a few black pebbles, but they are not suitable for stone tools in size and shape, and now all I need is a stone axe, and the only way is to break them with a fall, and then choose the right stone from the broken stone to make a stone tool.
I really took a lot of effort to break the black pebbles, and selected four or five suitable stones to make the stone axe, I am a perfectionist, for the sake of the stone axe to be easy to use and beautiful, the selected stone is decorated with stones, so that the stone axe looks neat, and then polished.
It took me three days to sharpen two 20-centimeter stone axes, and I read in the book that stone tools cannot be made too sharp and can easily crumble, and stone tools must be thick to be used for a long time, especially stone axes for cutting down trees.
I'm very satisfied with making two stone axes, and now I only need to accompany two more axe handles to start my official work.
I found two suitable pieces of wood and split one end of them, and then clamped the stone axe and tied it with rope, and I had no rope left, and I ran out of it when I was building the hut, but it was not difficult for me.
I also have a life raft airbag, which I cut into ropes with safety scissors, and it's very strong.
I took another plastic bottle and rotated it along the body with scissors to cut it into thin threads, being careful not to cut the plastic bottle short to make a rope.
It didn't take long to make the axe handle, and I also made a stone hammer, which is very simple, just find an oval stone and press the handle.
I made a wooden hammer again, anyway, I still have a half-crippled sailor knife, with a wooden hammer, the sailor knife can still be used for a while, the tools are made, and now I can start the official work.
Making a rainwater collector is actually very simple, it is a device that collects rainwater together, to put it bluntly, the house we live in has the function of rainwater collection, whenever it rains, the rainwater flowing from the eaves is proof, as long as we store the rainwater, of course, the most efficient is the house with a steeple.
So the rainwater collector I was going to make had to be a sloping surface, and the best material on the island was bamboo, so I searched the island for usable bamboo.
The main bamboos on the island are thin and long, I don't know what kind of bamboo, it is very suitable to use the weaving and making flute, I want the best bamboo as thick as possible, I am still lucky that there are some bamboos on the island that meet the requirements.
So I started chopping bamboo with my new stone axe, but I overestimated the power of the stone axe, thinking that it would be like the people who live in the wild on TV and can do everything with stone tools.
But I didn't expect the bamboo to be too tough and elastic is also very good, the stone axe is not as sharp as imagined on the bamboo, the more hard it rebounds, the greater the force, it is really difficult and laborious to cut a bamboo, I struggled to wield the stone axe while secretly thinking, how important the tool is, if there is a real axe or saw, this little work will be done in minutes.
It took me a lot of effort to cut down two bamboos, and the fractures were very rough, so it seems that those wilderness survival columns can cut down trees with a stone axe are deceitful, and most of them should be sawed with a saw or cut with an iron axe for shooting.
I also found a problem, doing such a heavy work on this hot island requires a lot of physical energy, water loss is faster, and the demand for water is greatly increased, but my fresh water is very limited, and most of it is stiffened with coconut water.
Although the rain collection device has not yet been completed, I still hope that God can make a heavy rain to solve my urgent need for fresh water
