Chapter Forty-Six: Long-term Survival

To make a cistern, it should be a water tank or a bucket to be precise, but the amount of cement I fired was calculated to make a tank, and I had to do a second firing.

With my first experience, I was much quicker this time, and I added lime to the sand, so that the kiln body was much stronger and I didn't have to worry about the kiln collapse.

The second firing went smoothly, but collecting firewood really exhausted me, the most important thing is that my cough has not stopped, the more tired I get, the more serious the cough, it seems that the damage to my lungs is permanent, I hope it will slowly recover in the future.

After a few days I burned enough cement to build the cistern, I knew that this kind of soil cement had many disadvantages, the main one was that it was not as strong as real cement, and I had to take some feasible measures to ensure the firmness and stability of the cistern.

People know the structure of concrete, the cement strength is very high but the toughness is unknown, all concrete is reinforced to enhance the toughness of the concrete, so I should also add some materials to my soil cement to enhance its toughness.

I cut some thin bamboos and cut them one by one with a stone axe, each thin bamboo is 1.5 meters, and then bury them in the sand for 30 cm one by one, forming a cylinder structure with a diameter of about one meter and a height of one meter two, and finally reinforce it with bamboo splits inside and outside the cylinder structure, so that the L frame of the cistern is made.

When everything is ready, the next step is to attach cement concrete to the reservoir, first I collect some palm fibers, pick them one by one, then dip the palm fibers in pure cement slurry, and then stick them tightly to the pool frame one by one, leaving no gaps.

I think such a process should be able to prevent the cracking of the soil cement, and the cement must be smeared on it before the cement slurry dries, and I do all these processes directly by hand, and finally use bamboo planks to compact and smooth out.

In order to ensure the impermeability and solidity of the reservoir, I added another layer of palm and cement sand plaster, with these two layers of palm and cement sand plaster, the reservoir should not seep water.

It took me two hours to get the cement in the reservoir in one go, and then it was time to wait for it to dry and see if it could hold water, in order to prevent the cement from cracking, the cement had to dry slowly, so I used palm leaves to shield the pool from the sun, and carefully sprayed water to keep the concrete healthy.

After a few days, the pool is dry and there is no cracking, which seems to be very successful, and the water can be stored after it is completely dried to reach the highest strength, which is about 20 days.

The original plan was to make two cisterns, but there was simply not enough cement left to build an equivalent cistern, and the remaining cement was only one-third the amount of the first cistern.

I carefully measured the cistern I made, and found that the actual water storage with the thickness of the cement does not seem to be a ton, about 850 kilograms of water storage, plus the water bag also has more than 200 kilograms of water storage, which is enough for me to drink all year round.

My drinking water is completely sufficient, there is no need to build a second cistern, but there is still some cement left to bear, and it suddenly occurred to me that the dilemma of not having water to drink some time ago is really daunting, in order not to have no water to drink, or to prevent it, I decided to use the remaining cement to make a backup cistern.

I decided to make a tank that could be moved, but it was made of cement.

To make a pool that can be moved, my way is to first use bamboo to weave a cylinder, about 500 catties of water, that is, 250 kilograms of water, I know some bamboo weaving techniques, only took a day or two to weave the cylinder with bamboo.

Although the appearance is not very attractive, the next step is to operate with the previous pool.

After I had the cistern, I repaired the rain collection device, and during the rainy season I filled the large and small cisterns with water, and I erected a pergola for the fixed large cistern and made a cover out of bamboo, so that unclean things could not fall into the water.

With the cistern, I can live safely on the island for a long time.

During this period of time, I lived a very fulfilling life, going to the sea every day to fish, picking up shellfish, and sometimes diving to catch some good seafood, such as sometimes diving to catch lobsters and crabs, and even sometimes I can find traces of turtle eggs on the beach, and dig a few turtle eggs to try.

In short, I gave full play to the characteristics of Chinese who can eat and dare to eat anything, and I eat almost anything I catch.

Sometimes I had nothing to do when I had enough food, so I played the role of farmer and garden manager on the island to pass the time, planting a lot of coconut trees and resting some of them with pond stems to prevent them from eroding.

In particular, the bamboo forests have become lush under my management, and they have rewarded me with bamboo shoots, which are not much, but I can change the taste every once in a while.

Fresh water, food, shelter, it seems that I have solved all the problems and with these guarantees I can live on this island for a long time.

Until I die of old age,,,,,,,,

It seems very happy and gratifying that I have the security of long-term survival, but what is the point of me living alone on this small island until I die.

I couldn't help but feel a fear in my heart when I thought about it, and I told myself to stop thinking about it, not to let this pessimistic attitude take over my thoughts.

We need to be hopeful at all times,,,,,,

I suddenly remembered that some time ago I had to climb trees to pick coconuts because there was no fresh water, and during that time I noticed fishing boats passing by on the sea, and I had not found any boats before, but I climbed up to the top of the tree and found boats, which proves that the island is too low for me and the boats to find each other.

If so, could I build an observatory to observe the sea in the distance, and if a ship passes by, it will increase the chance of finding it?

It's time to build a watchtower,,,,,,
