Chapter 338: The Tower of Nunmengard (Part 1)
On this slightly bleak side street, in front of the dilapidated red telephone booth, with a flash of golden-red light, the phoenix disappeared completely.
Jon bent down and slowly unlaced the half-new leather boot.
You don't need to hold on tightly to use the portkey, just one finger - Jon held out a finger and pressed it lightly against his boot......
It seemed as if a hook slammed him forward with great force in front of him, and he flew with his feet off the ground. It flew forward like a gust of wind, unable to see anything clearly, and the portkey stuck its fingers firmly to it as if there was a magnetic force.
After a journey that wasn't too pleasant, Jon opened his eyesβ
He was now in a dark forest.
There was silence in the middle of the forest, and Jon looked up and could vaguely see the sunlight shining through the shade of the leaves, looming from side to side, somewhat dazzling, revealing an elusive silence.
"Portus!" picked up his wand and aimed it at his boot with a slight touch, a faint blue light emitting around the doorkey and trembling slightly. Jon then tossed it into his suitcase.
A few howls could be heard in the depths of the forest, and Jon frowned at the strange sound.
The howl is not high-pitched and low, so it should be a feline cry rather than a canine...... The frequency of this call is also consistent with the characteristics of the "Kemeramamon" described by Hagrid in class, and it is also possible that the Griffin and the Sphin-headed Sphin-tailed Manticore.
These magical beasts are all very strange existences and are not easy to deal with...... Jon quickened his pace, took out his wand, and headed away from the screams, presumably near the edge of the forest.
As Jon progressed, the surrounding bushes and trees changed from tall to low, green to yellow, and thriving to withering at a visible rate......
At first, you can see weaker but more adaptable magical creatures like tree monkey frogs or Hoklap, but as you get closer to the edge of the forest, you can't see a single caterpillar.
In less than twenty minutes, the surrounding dark jungle has turned into a bleak wilderness.
But ahead, the tall tower is also clearly visible.
......
It was an eerie, intimidating fortress.
From a distance, it looks like a can firmly wrapped in iron sheets...... The fort was on a cliff not too high, and within a few miles of it, it was a complete desert, with no life in sight except for the occasional ruins of broken walls.
Luckily, in Jon's direction, there was a rugged mountain road paved with stones.
It's better to walk along the path than to walk on the yellow sand and mud.
Struggled up the hillside, and by the time he reached the front of the fortress, Jon was almost exhausted.
However, he only now realized that the fortress in front of him, the tower of Nungard, was even taller than he had imagined.
The pitch-black walls are at least two stories high, and even after decades, the walls are so smooth that it is almost impossible to climb them.
At the same time, above the wall, there is a pale blue protective shield, just like the ones around Hogwarts...... I am afraid that if someone tries to invade it from the air, the entire fortress will transform into a terrifying beast and devour the invaders.
And the door in front of Jon was covered with spikes, which was intimidating to look at.
"And how do you get in?" Jon scratched his head hesitantly.
I shouldn't have worried about whether Dumbledore's fragile heart would be affected by the sight of my old friend, and how good it would have been for him to bring him here...... Having an acquaintance to lead the way won't be so troublesome.
However, it should be common sense to knock on the door before entering!
Jon thought about it, found a spot where the spikes on the door weren't too dense, and reached out and knocked on the door.
There was no response -
Really...... This kind of prison, which has been abandoned for decades, cannot still have janitors.
Jon was about to return to London via the portkey and go to Hogwarts to find Albus Dumbledore.
Only a "squeak" was heard.
A tiny crack opened in the spiky black door......
......
The gates of the tower of Newmengard were opened.
An old wizard stood behind the gate...... He looked old, skinny, and frail.
Holding a large broom in his hand, he barely supported his body by the broom.
"Albus Dumbledore is dead?" the frail old wizard grinned, revealing a mouthful of teeth that had almost been lost, "You're here to inform him of his death?"
"No, no, no, not yet. Jon quickly shook his head and explained, "I just wanted to go to Gellert Grindelwald's cell...... Sir, are you the caretaker of this prison? β
"That's right. The old man leaning on the broom nodded, his voice without any emotion: "Anyone who wants to enter Newmengard needs permission from Albus Dumbledore. β
Jon hurriedly took out the permission letter from his pocket that had just been prepared at the Ministry of Magic.
The old wizard just gave a casual look.
"Why is the seal a little bigger than before!" he muttered.
He then swapped the permission into Jon's hand and continued to raise the broom and began to dust the floor.
"Gellert Grindelwald's cell is on the top floor of the tower......" he said without looking back, "follow the white line on the ground, don't walk crookedly, and don't touch anything around you...... Otherwise, you will bear the consequences. β
Jon then noticed that there was a white line on the ground, but the white line near the gate was a little difficult to see due to the dust, and the white line in the distance was clearer.
And the old wizard with the broom is just sweeping away the dust around the white line along the way, and doesn't care about the rest.
"Okay, thank you!" Jon quickly bowed.
"Come in, don't disturb me to clean up!" said the old wizard slowly.
......
Follow the white line and walk all the way inside the tower.
The surrounding cells were silent, and no sound could be heard, and the entire tower of Newmengard was like a dead city, which was even more eerie and terrifying.
Jon remembered the words of the old wizard of the caretaker before, and pressed against the white line on the ground without touching anything...... Along the way, the dust around the white line has been swept over to make it easier to identify, otherwise with the dust that has accumulated for an unknown number of years, the white line will definitely not be visible.
Ten minutes later, Jon walked into the dark room in the top tower.
Very modest room, with a very narrow slit in the window of the black stone, with a stone bed and a thin tattered blanket on it......
Other than that, nothing.
