However, the main root of wisdom is precept and concentration, so the introductory work of practice should start from two aspects: self-cultivation and self-cultivation.

Repairing bad thoughts is called mind cultivation, and the main work of mind cultivation is meditation, and repairing bad behaviors is called self-cultivation, so self-cultivation can also be called self-cultivation, and the main work of self-cultivation is to keep the precepts.

The purpose of taking the vows is to guard the gate of the six roots and prevent bad things from slipping into our hearts from the six root gates, so as to plant the seedlings of the flow of life and death.

Therefore, ordinary monks and nuns can only barely keep the six roots under the protection of the precepts, and as for the word pure, it is impossible to talk about it.

Ordinary people always think that as long as monks and nuns do not commit adultery, do not covet undivided wealth, and do not interfere in the right and wrong of others, then they can be regarded as pure in the six roots.

In fact, all those who are greedy for the use of objects are always impure, whether it is seeing, hearing, smelling, eating, wearing, playing, or using, as long as there is a situation of greed and reluctance, it is six impure.

Because apart from the problems of men and women, money, etc., it is not easy to perceive, and it is rare for people to pay close attention to whether it is pure or impure.

To put it more clearly, the so-called six roots are not the absence of the six roots, but our physiological faculties, which no longer follow the illusions of the external environment, which is called spotlessness, but this is by no means something that can be done by waiting for idle work.

The purpose of the six pure roots is to cut off and transcend this flow of life and death.
