Ko's confidence is not blind, half of his confidence comes from his own professional ability, and the other half comes from his teacher, Mr. Nobuo Kato. Mr. Kato's high-precision integrated circuit manufacturing technology had reached the world's first-class level at that time, and he was a leading figure in this field at research institutes throughout Japan.
That year, 16 months before Ke officially entered Mr. Kato's laboratory, the teacher received a major topic, the research and development of "0.16mm CMOS technology", which is simply to integrate 2.2 billion electronic components on a single crystal, which will be a major breakthrough in the history of the development of microelectronics technology in the world. At that time, Korea began to emerge in this field in the early 90s, and achieved world hegemony in the IC field through standardized DDR design. Therefore, whether the project that Mr. Kato took over this time can be successfully completed will become the key to whether Japan can surpass South Korea and regain its dominance in the CMOS field, and for a time Kato Laboratory has become the focus of attention in the IC field in Japan and even in the world.
Professor Kato also attaches great importance to this project, and has concentrated all the elites of the laboratory to devote themselves to the research and development of the project, and the early progress is also very smooth, and a major breakthrough has been made in 64M single crystal storage. Under the loading of Mr. Kato's new model architecture, the crystal oscillator accuracy and single-channel transmission rate have been steadily improved. When all the experiments were going well, the unexpected happened, and when the monocrystalline structures were stacked, the microcrystalline electromagnetic interference increased dramatically. The members of the group were full of confidence that through the results of their own efforts, they were about to reach the other side of success, but suddenly they found that there was a chasm under their feet that could never be crossed, and if they continued to move forward, they might fall into the abyss from which they could never recover.
The success or failure of Kato Research is related to the investment of major enterprises in the future product line, as well as the future IC market pattern and development. At this time, some venture capital institutions thought that the time had come and asked Mr. Kato to discuss capital investment. After several rounds of negotiations, a venture capital institution called WNC made a capital injection, so that the Kato Research Laboratory, which was already about to break down, saw a ray of life again.
Although there is no problem with the funding for the time being, and the research work can continue, the problem of electromagnetic interference has not been fundamentally solved, and if this continues, sooner or later there will be problems, and Mr. Kato is also at a loss. Just when the project was in trouble, Mr. Kato resolutely decided to absorb Xiao Ke, who had been a graduate student with Mr. Kato for more than a year, into the R&D team.
Although Ke was only an inconspicuous graduate student at the time, Kato's choice of Ke was carefully considered. Among the 12 members of the R&D team, half of the researchers have graduated with a doctorate in electronics for many years, and have been involved in the scientific research work of this discipline in various institutions and have rich research experience. The other members also have postdoctoral workstation research experience, but Ke is only a graduate student, why Kato would choose Ke to become the thirteenth member of the research room, everyone is puzzled.
In the original research system of Japan's data selection method, Fujitsu Hitachi Laboratories' "one-way data selection method" has always been the core technology model of Japanese microcrystals, and has become the leading direction of Japan's CMOS architecture, and Japanese researchers are basically proficient in this theoretical model. However, the research on crystal architecture based on the "two-way data selection method" of Samsung Electronics in South Korea as the data communication model has been abandoned by major mainstream scientific research institutions in Japan. Mr. Kato began to pay attention to the differences in architecture between the two several years ago, and now his intuition tells him that after entering the high-crystalline system, the bidirectional digital communication model may have greater potential.
At that time, when Professor Oshima recommended Ke as a graduate student of Professor Kato, Professor Oshima specifically mentioned to him that Ke's father, a former colleague of Professor Oshima in Texas, was a cutting-edge scientific and technological talent in China's microelectronics theoretical research. This surprised Mr. Kato, who knew this Professor Ke, because in recent years, Professor Ke has been a dazzling new star in the field of basic research in microelectronics in China. His research on anti-electromagnetic interference in the field of microcrystalline has reached the nanometer level, and his papers have been published in several authoritative journals in the field of microelectronics in the world, and have been highly praised by mainstream institutions such as IEEE. Once, when Professor Ke was lecturing at Imperial College London, Mr. Kato took time out of his busy schedule to listen carefully to his speech. After listening to the speech, Mr. Kato discussed some cutting-edge issues in the field of microelectronics with Professor Ke, and through a few short words of Professor Ke, Professor Kato thought that Professor Ke's research on microelectronics theory is indeed unique, and he is also full of admiration. Therefore, when he learned that Professor Ke was the father of the young man in front of him, Mr. Kato made an exception and agreed to Professor Oshima to accept Ke as his graduate student without any investigation or questioning of Ko.
After Ke entered Mr. Kato's laboratory, he had a serious conversation with Mr. Kato, and during the conversation, he also talked about the potential of the "two-way data selection method" in the future billion-dimensional chips. This coincides with Mr. Kato, who decided to make this young man an alternative in his graduate school, an outlier in the field of microelectronics research in Japan, and a new advocate of Japan's "two-way data selection method". First, there was no similar model to refer to in Kato Lab or any other laboratory in Japan, and there was no teacher to guide him, so he basically had to rely on his own efforts to explore. Second, if you are alone and do not produce the results of your research within the deadline set by the university, you will not be able to graduate normally under the harsh Japanese education management system. Mr. Kato also informed Ke of all the difficulties and consequences, and asked for his opinion, and Ke did not hesitate to agree to Mr. Kato's suggestion to conduct a study of "two-way data selection method" and be "the first person to eat crabs".
After accepting the project of model establishment assigned by Mr. Kato, Ke found that his original promise was a bit reckless after more than a month of careful research. Looking back, the reason why he dared to "eat crabs" was because of the information his father obtained in the research report on the frontier theory of microelectronics and the correspondence with his father, so he had the confidence to accept this task. But when he really began to enter this field, he found that his previous knowledge accumulation in this area was still very thin, and he did not have a lot of professional theoretical knowledge, just like building a skyscraper, the overall drawings and basic framework were still lacking at present, obviously completing this project in a short period of time was an impossible task for him, he frowned, and a little retreated.
A month has passed, and he has not had the courage to report to Mr. Kato, because in his opinion, it is a matter of time before the topic is changed, but he is not willing to take the initiative to go to Mr. Kato so soon, which will make Mr. Kato look down on him, and he is now regretting his recklessness every day. Although he didn't go to the teacher, the teacher came to him. One Saturday afternoon, Mr. Kato called and asked him to come over. Ke hurriedly put down the experiment in his hand and hurried to Mr. Kato's office.
After taking his seat, Mr. Kato asked with concern how the recent research was going. Ke blushed and said that he had read a lot of literature recently and found that there was a big gap between the "two-way data selection method" and what he imagined. The main reason is that the process structure is relatively complex, so the anti-interference ability has a great advantage over the "one-way data selection method" in high-frequency anti-interference. However, many technical details have been patented, and more professional theoretical knowledge is needed in this regard, and he has not accumulated enough in the early stage, so the progress is relatively slow now, and I am afraid it is difficult to complete the project within the time specified by the teacher. When he finished the last sentence, Xiao Ke, who has always been very technically confident, looked very nervous, and his upper hand on his knee trembled nervously. Mr. Kato looked at Ke's helpless appearance, and Mr. Kato, who had always been serious, couldn't help but laugh heartily, and Mr. Kato's laughter made Ke, who was already nervous, even more overwhelmed.
Mr. Kato put away his laughter and said cheerfully: "Today is Saturday, it can be seen that Kesang has been working hard recently, tomorrow is the weekend, so don't work overtime tonight." After dinner, I will take you out for a walk, scattering your mind, always tense is not good, you Chinese have an old saying, called the way of culture and martial arts. ”
Ke simply finished dinner and set off, and the teacher was waiting for him at the gate of the academy in a car. Nagoya in early summer is not very hot, the sky is blue, the breeze is gentle, people are walking on the street, the lights are on, the street scenery is also beautiful, Ke has not been to the city for a long time. However, Ke didn't have time to look at the scenery outside the car at this time, and he was thinking about where the teacher was taking him.
The car drove for a while, and when it came to the foot of a hill, the teacher stopped in front of a small courtyard.
"Kesan, it's here, let's get out of the car. ”
Ke followed the teacher out of the car, pushed open the courtyard door, and they walked into a small courtyard.
The yard is not very large, but it is delicate, typical of Japanese garden style. Pushing open the door of the wooden double-open courtyard, there is an irregular small pond in front of me, the lotus flowers in the pond have opened in twos and threes, and some fish are constantly shuttling in the pond; not far behind the pond is a Japanese-style wooden structure building, with green tiles and cornices, and wooden flute windows. Seven or eight trees were planted in the yard, high and low, lush and scattered. The lawn in the yard is very neatly manicured, and the whole yard is connected by a winding bluestone pavement, and a small bluestone arch bridge is erected over the pond, which looks unique.
"Teacher, is this your yard?" Ke asked in surprise.
"Yes. More than 10 years ago, when the real estate industry was in a recession, I bought this land and designed this yard myself, which was originally intended to be used for a weekend vacation as a family, but later I was too busy with work to have time to accompany my family. I thought it would be a waste of resources to keep it, so I converted one of the largest rooms into a kendo gym, which was a kind of sponsorship for my friends in the kendo world to have a good environment to practice kendo. I started learning Japanese kendo when I was eighteen years old, and it's been more than twenty years now. As he spoke, the teacher opened a wooden lattice sliding door, and a rectangular kendo hall appeared in front of them. The hall is about 80 square meters, and there is a huge plaque hanging on the front wall, which reads "Wu Nian Liu". The floor is made of bamboo, and in order to prevent slipping, it is simply sanded to ensure that it is flat. On the far side of the wall, on the left side of the row, there is a row of wooden frames dedicated to kendo, and ten training bamboo knives are neatly erected side by side. ON THE RIGHT IS A ROW OF WOODEN LATTICE WARDROBES, TEN KENDO SUITS AND HAKAMA NEATLY STACKED IN TEN WOODEN COMPARTMENTS, EACH WITH A HEAD PROTECTOR PRESSED ON TOP. In the center of the wall opposite the plaque is a mahogany case, in the center of which is a three-tiered knife holder, from the bottom to the last place placed the knife, the knife and the rib. On the wall hung some wooden plaques with inscriptions on them, the meaning of which Ke didn't quite understand, and on the other side hung several hideous colorful wooden masks, which must have been a symbol of the courage of the samurai on the battlefield.
"We have six lifetime members in the kendo gym, and they usually come here on weekends to practice. The words on the plaque Ke Sang should have been seen, this is exactly the name of our school, Shinto Wunian Flow-—— this is a very old school of swordsmanship, and many famous swordsmen have been born, so I won't list it. The Nian-ryu has had a great influence on many modern kendo schools in Japan. ”
Ke's university also has a kendo gym, and he has watched their training classes. The swordsmen each wore dark blue kendo uniforms and headgear protectors, and they looked cool just from their appearance. And the swordsmanship is even more open and closed, there is a basis for advancing and retreating, like a sword and a knife, drawing a sword is like a lightning flint, and splitting a knife is advancing without retreating.
"I didn't expect you to be proficient in kendo, teacher!" Xiao Ke felt that it was too incredible, and looked Kato Teacher up and down with a look of surprise and admiration.
"I am a disciple of the Innocent Stream Authentic Sect, the fifth dan of the Great Japan Kendo Federation. Do you know anything about the Stream? Kato-sensei looked at Ke with a smile on his face.
"To be honest, I don't know much about kendo, please teach me!" Ke hurriedly said respectfully.
