Chapter 219: The Prototype of the Pangu Camp
The industry summit held during the Pangu Game Show was a great success for the entire Pangu platform.
For the first time, 93 game companies signed contracts with third-party game developers, basically covering the world, mainly third-party game developers.
In the hands of these game companies, there are some game copyrights of Atari, Apple, PC, C64 and other platform versions, and some games are completely portable, but, learn a lesson, even if these games have a good reputation on other platforms, the Pangu platform still needs to strictly control its quality to ensure that the ported version also retains the playability and fun of the original version. These companies have accumulated more than 1,000 game copyrights available for porting, and later, after strict review, only more than 200 of these games have been qualified for porting and publishing on the Pangu platform. The results after its release were naturally mixed, but due to the rapid growth in the number of gamers on the entire platform, no game released before 84 sold less than 50,000 copies. In addition, after hundreds of thousands and millions of copies of the results continue to be reported, it has further stimulated the passion of third-party game manufacturers to develop more Pangu platform games!
Later, when Nintendo and Sega platforms gradually rose and actively attracted third-party game manufacturers, many manufacturers chose to submit the game to the Pangu platform first, and only after the Pangu platform considered that its quality was substandard, they would choose to port the game to other platforms for distribution.
Over the long term, the player base has gradually formed a concept - the quality of the games on the Pangu platform is high!
Of course, the quality of games on Nintendo and Sega platforms is much better than that of the previous Atari platform, at least, they still review games submitted by third-party game manufacturers.
……
The vast majority of companies that attended the summit agreed to the terms of the Pangu platform, which is harsh compared to the Atari platform.
However, it is also considered to be within the acceptable range. In addition, these game developers who really want to develop the industry for a long time are not willing to destroy the market order with a bunch of garbage games.
This rule is naturally much milder than the original historical Nintendo, at least, it does not require the game development company to pay a "royalty". Historically, the overbearing "royalty" system, although Nintendo has earned far more profits than other console platforms. However, it is too harsh, and the risk is entirely borne by the third-party game development company, and Nintendo cannot lose money under this guarantee mechanism, which makes Nintendo's profits continue to grow rapidly.
However, it was precisely because of this system that Sega, Sony, and later Microsoft were given opportunities. This directly led to the defection of Nintendo, and its powerful third-party game developers basically defected to the Sony and Microsoft camps, resulting in the Nintendo platform not being able to find many third-party game developers who could play, and the games that sold a little better were almost all Nintendo's own fried rice to repackage the old IP and develop it into new games.
In addition, forcing third-party game developers to develop games for only one platform is not a good strategy. After a long time, game developers will always rebound, so the Pangu platform adopts different sharing ratios, leaving some developers to choose whether to sign a platform exclusivity agreement.
Although the Pangu platform does not force third-party developers to sign exclusive game agreements, it allows game developers to develop a game into different platform versions. However, since only CD-ROM game consoles can run programs with a few hundred megabytes in size, some companies that want to develop large-scale games have no choice but to sign an exclusive agreement.
As for developing programs smaller than 2MB, many third-party game developers choose to distribute them on multiple platforms in an inclusive manner. However, there are also a small number of third-party game developers, because they do not have enough ability and energy to publish on multiple platforms, so they also choose to focus on the development of the Pangu platform, and these focused companies often get more revenue in the 80s than game companies published on multiple platforms. Hudson is one such company, and despite the fact that the game programs it develops are small and cassette versions, it still chooses to be exclusive to the Pangu platform.
Many years later, the president of Hudson Games recalled:
"The Pangu Summit in '83 was full of talent, and many of the top 10 big game companies in the world were inconspicuous at the time. At that time, many companies fell into blind pessimism because of the collapse of Atari, but few people realized that the Pangu platform, which was more powerful than Atari, quietly rose, and this was definitely not the winter of the game industry, but the spring of the game industry, many seeds were just scattered into the cold soil, and everyone was worried that they would freeze to death, but later, many seeds grew into towering trees.
At that time, among the game development companies in Japan, the larger ones should be Nangong Dream and Taito, these companies are all giants in the industry, not only relying on the console platform to survive, they all develop arcade first, and then transplant to the console platform, of course, forced by the severe performance pressure of the game industry at that time, these big manufacturers also participated in the summit.
At that time, our company was a very small company, and even developing CD-ROM games was beyond our capabilities. The 600MB size of the program,It doesn't seem very big now,Just use some general engine programs and materials,You can quickly make a few hundred MB,Or even more than 1G content。
But at that time, there were not so many development tools and game engines and materials on the market, and almost everything needed to be done by yourself, and at that time, developing a game as large as a few hundred MB was definitely a great thing, and only a few big factories developed that kind of masterpiece!
We saw our limit is to develop a 2MB cassette game, in order to get a higher share, we signed an exclusive agreement, our first game "Gold Digging" has a rating of B, and if you monopolize the platform, you only need to pay 20% of the patent fee to the console platform, which is not much of a harsh agreement, of course, if our game is non-exclusive, it can be ported to other platforms, but in this way, the Pangu platform will charge an additional 20% of the patent fee on the original basis...... The sales of game software on platforms other than the Pangu platform were negligible at the time.
So, we decided to only make games on the Pangu platform. Gold Digging wasn't the first game we submitted, we submitted four games in succession, but in the end, only one game, Gold Digger, passed the test and was allowed to be released, and the result was ...... This game sold 1 million copies in less than two months. This achievement. The whole company was stunned because, in order to motivate our employees, we guaranteed to give out half of our profits as bonuses.
Later, as the number of users on the Pangu platform increased, it even rose to more than 3 million copies. At that time, there were less than twenty people in the company, and everyone earned money to buy a house and a car, relying on this game!
After this game, Pangu even gave us an additional $1 million in bonuses, and then we took the prize money to Hawaii for half a year. Half a year later, we had some ideas, and Pangu had some suggestions from the platform at the time, so we were commissioned by the platform to develop the MapleStory series, which sold even more than Gold Dig Since then, we have stopped talking about trying to become a major player in the industry, after all, at that time we were already a well-deserved industry leader, and the Japanese game industry was able to rank in the top five, and the best result in the world game industry was ranked eleventh. Among the third-party game developers on the Pangu platform, our best result is ranked third......
Of course, this is just a comparison with third-party game developers, the most powerful thing about the Pangu platform is the game studios and creative teams within its company.
We had the pleasure of visiting their studio, it was the late 80's, and at that time, they had already developed full-fledged online games, and the Legends that you play now, the Journey, and so on, were developed in the 80's......"
Hudson Games, as one of the first developers to join the Pangu platform, has always regarded itself as a loyal dog of the Pangu platform.
Of course, it is precisely because of this that the resources of the Pangu platform have been tilted, so that the resource support of his company is second only to the studio established by the employees of Xinchuang Electronics. Throughout the 80s, its games that sold millions of copies were too lazy to count, and there were many masterpieces with more than 10 million copies. The size of the company has gradually grown from a small company with dozens of people to a large factory employing more than 3,000 people.
But in the 90s, its technical level has not kept up with the development of the times, and the level of game production it develops has lagged far behind other manufacturers. However, it was not abandoned by the new start-up electronics company, but injected tens of millions of dollars into its most difficult period for the company, acquired it, and after being reborn, Hudson obtained the authorization to develop the online game "Maplestory". Since then, Hudson has come out of the trough and returned to the top 30 game companies in the world by virtue of its transformation. Although the status of the industry is far from comparable to the peak of the 80s, after all, the scale of the game industry is far from comparable to that of the past......
