The main meaning of this sentence is to give the bad guys a chance, and if they really let them become Buddhas, it is basically very difficult.
First, it is not easy to "put down the butcher's knife."
Why is it not easy to say that "putting down the butcher's knife"? Since the knife in a person's hand is called a "butcher's knife," it must have killed someone. And it's not ordinary killing, it's very cruel or a lot of killing.
Since he kills people like this, then he must have allies and many enemies. He wants to "put down the butcher's knife", and when he comes, the same party will not agree. The same party inevitably demanded that he always stand on the same front as himself, believing that his "laying down the butcher's knife" was a betrayal and a sign of betrayal.
Second, the enemy did not agree. Since he killed someone, he naturally formed hatred. He wanted to put down the butcher's knife and seal the knife without killing, but he would never forgive him if he killed the relatives and friends of those people.
Besides, since a person has turned the knife in his hand into a "butcher knife", it is obvious that his heart has mutated, and the "pain" in his heart has disappeared. It is obviously very difficult for such a person to restore his conscience.
Second, it is not easy to "repent on the ground."
"Standing on the ground to become a Buddha", the most critical word is "standing". You must be able to stand and stand. And it is difficult for a person who has held a "butcher's knife" in his hand to stand up.
First of all, the action of "standing on the ground and repenting" is a very unfamiliar posture for the wicked. It's like a person is a "left voice", and he has also become accustomed to his "left voice".
It is obviously much more difficult for you to correct his "left voice" and put him on the path of "correct words" than it is to teach a person who has never been able to sing to sing.
Secondly, it is not easy for others to believe in doing things that "stand up and repent". A man with blood on his hands suddenly says one day that he wants to "repent and turn his ways"? If you want to gain the trust of others, you have to work a hundredfold.
Even if you put in a hundredfold effort, others may still say that you are pretending. After that, you have a little repetition, and all of a sudden it becomes evidence that others confirm your disguise.
A man with blood on his hands, suddenly one day said to the people around him that he wanted to repent and reform, he wanted to be a good person, even if he really said this kind of thing, how many people would be willing to believe him?
They have to work at least twice as hard as a good person to have a glimmer of hope, first from a wicked person to a good person, and then from a good person to a saint, and the process is definitely very difficult.
Therefore, this classic saying of Buddhism is actually just a reason to cross the bad people, and there is no problem of being unfair to the good people. As the saying goes, where there is a cause, there is an effect, and what kind of cause is planted, what kind of effect will naturally be produced.
Third, it is not easy to become a Buddha through detachment.
"Attaining Buddhahood" is a difficult goal, and achieving this goal requires at least twice as much effort as ordinary people. You need to take two steps, the first is to go from a bad person to a good person.
The second step is to change from a good person to a saint. It is not easy to go from a wicked person to a good person, and it is even more difficult to change from a good person to a saint.
As far as I know, is there a person who did bad things in his early years, but later reformed himself and finally became a saint? The answer is: Not one! Therefore, it is really too difficult to "become a Buddha."
From the above analysis, it can be seen that there is no problem that this sentence is unfair to good people who have been doing good deeds. That is to say, no matter what everyone does, there will be a corresponding consequence. Therefore, the ancients advised people: "Don't take the good as small and do nothing, and don't take the evil as small." ”
The so-called putting down the butcher's knife and becoming a Buddha on the spot is actually just an expectation of the Buddhists for the bad guys! It is absolutely even more difficult for the bad guys to really achieve their goal of becoming a Buddha.
Of course, it is not easy for a person who once held a "butcher's knife" to become a Buddha, but as long as there is such a good thought, it is a beginning. Taking "becoming a Buddha" as an ultimate goal and a "lofty ideal" will still pay off as long as you work hard.
There is also a saying: "The Buddha does not save the undestined person"! In fact, there is another story in it.
The old mother of the east of the city in the time of the Buddha is the neighbor of Shakyamuni Buddha, although the Buddha is not destined for great compassion, the same body of great compassion, but never said to the old mother once the disciple asked the Buddha, the Buddha sighed: It's not that he is not compassionate, but he has no chance with her in his previous life, and he can't be saved!
The disciples didn't believe it, so they asked the Buddha to give it a try. As soon as the old mother saw the Buddha coming, she turned around and left, and the Buddha turned to the front and back of the old mother, and the old mother avoided it. The Buddha appeared countless doppelgangers to surround the old mother, showing immeasurable magical powers to the old mother, but the old mother sat on the ground, bowed her head and cried, but refused to look at the Buddha.
The disciples believed that the Buddha's words were true, and that in order to transform sentient beings, it was not enough to have true skills, but also to have good karma with sentient beings. The Buddha told his disciples that I had no relationship with this old mother in the past, and now I want to save her, even if I try all the methods, it will be difficult to achieve results.
So the Buddha sent Ananda to save her. Ananda said, "World-honored One, you are a transcendent saint, and you can't save her, will it be effective for me to go?" The Buddha said, "You will know when you go!" As long as you go, she will take refuge in you.
So Ananda followed the Buddha's instructions and went to the house of the old mother in the east of the city, and the old mother immediately smiled when she saw Ananda, and offered Ananda with exquisite food!
The disciples were amazed, so they asked the Buddha why even the Buddha could not be transformed, but Venerable Ananda was able to do so easily. The Buddha said to his disciples, "I have no fate with this old mother, but Venerable Ananda has a lot of fate with her."
The Buddha said that before the immeasurable eons of time, Shakyamuni and Ananda were both practitioners! When the two of them were walking together on the road, they saw a dead mouse. The predecessor of Shakyamuni Buddha only looked at the dead mouse three times and ignored it, while the predecessor of Ananda had a compassionate mind and buried the dead mouse.
At that time, the dead mouse was the current old mother in the east of the city, and Shakyamuni Buddha only looked at it three times in his practice at that time, so now this old lady, she only looked at the Buddha three times and closed her eyes, and she didn't want to look at the fourth eye. And Ananda's compassion at that time, when he buried the dead mouse, felt that the old mother was now willing to accept his teaching.
This is the problem of fate, and people are on the joints of fate. Although Buddhism is wide, people who do not have a fate, all beings want to meet the Buddha, they must first get attached to the Buddha, if there is no cause, even if they are in the Buddha world, they are like the old mother in the east of the city, it is difficult to get it.
