In the past, the wheels on both sides of the carriage were connected by a hard axle, so the rotational speed of the wheels on both sides was always the same. Because there is no differential, the inner wheel has sliding friction in addition to rolling friction when cornering.
Fortunately, the wheels of the carriage are made of wood and are wear-resistant...... And the horse was stupid, not knowing that the difference in speed between the two wheels would make it so tired......
But to be reasonable, cars have the same problem when turning. If a hard shaft is still used, the tires and other parts of the car will be seriously damaged when cornering.
In order to solve this problem, the car is designed with two half shafts, and the two half shafts are linked together by a differential, which also allows the two wheels to have a speed difference. When cornering, four tires get better driving performance.
It sounds lofty, but this technique is actually a set of star gears to achieve different rotational speeds on both sides of the wheel;
A set of planetary gears in the differential housing can be abstracted as a "gear" with only one tooth, that is, a stick that can connect the two half-shafts on both sides and drive the two half-shafts to rotate.
But in addition to rotating with the propeller shaft, this stick can also rotate on its own.
If the friction force on both sides of the vehicle is the same, then the stick will not have rotation, that is, the speed of the wheels on both sides is also the same; if the friction force on one side of the wheel is greater than that of the other side, then the stick itself will rotate, so that without changing the rotation speed and rotation, the purpose of the rotation on both sides can be achieved.
In other words, if one wheel is stuck and can't turn, that's fine, although the power is still there, but the stick that rotates will drive the wheel that isn't stuck to turn.
If more sticks are added, a gear, a planetary gear, is also the core of the differential.
But the car is equipped with this thing, then the problem arises.
With this, the tires on both sides can have different revolutions, so in bad road conditions, it is particularly troublesome.
For example, if the car is stuck in the sand or mud, one wheel is stuck, and the other wheel is slippery. This is where the differential comes into play, because the mission and purpose of the differential is to allow for a speed difference between the two wheels.
In this way, the stuck side of the wheel remains stationary, while the other wheel spins wildly due to the action of the differential.
One side is stuck, and the other side is spinning. Not to mention moving forward, the car is likely to sink deeper and deeper.
And the differential lock, in fact, is a thing that is meant to prevent this differential from working.
The same is true in the case of one wheel getting stuck and one wheel slipping. If you lock the differential with a differential lock and make the two half-axles hard-linked, you can transfer power to the "stationary" wheel.
The differential lock will make use of the tooth inlay structure, so that the two half shafts are rigidly connected to make it a single unit.
This way both wheels can get the same power, so that the vehicle can get out of trouble.
That's where the differential lock comes in!
