Chapter 21: History

Professor Binns was boringly explaining the 1289 International Wizarding Conference when he looked up in surprise.

"You'reโ€”"

"I'm Granger, Professor. I don't know if you can tell us what's going on in the Chamber of Secrets. Hermione said in a clear voice.

Everyone suddenly came to their senses.

"My course is the history of magic," he said in a dry voice, "I study facts, Miss Granger, not myths and legends. "Then I plan to continue lecturing.

"Miss Granger?" he stammered. Hermione raised her hand in the air and waved it again.

"I'd like to ask you, sir, legends have a certain factual basis, don't they?"

"Well," Professor Binns said slowly, "yes, I suppose you could say that." But the legend you are talking about is a very sensational, even comical, storyโ€”"

"As you all know, Hogwarts School was founded more than a thousand years ago. The exact date is uncertain. The founders were the four greatest witches and wizards of the time. Four houses are named after them: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. Together, they built the castle away from the prying eyes of Muggles, because at that time, the common people were afraid of magic and witches and witches were persecuted. โ€

Professor Binns paused, looked around the classroom with a blurred vision, and continued, "For the first few years, several founders worked together in harmony, looking for young people who showed signs of magic, and bringing them to the castle to be cultivated. Slowly, however, a disagreement began between them. The rift between Slytherin and the others grew. Slytherin wanted Hogwarts to be more selective when it came to recruiting students. He believed that magical education should be confined to purely magical families. He was reluctant to accept Muggle-born children, believing them to be unreliable. After a few days, Slytherin and Gryffindor had a heated argument over the issue, and Slytherin left the school. โ€

"Reliable historical sources tell us this," he said, "but these pure facts are obscured by strange legends about the secret chambers." The story goes that Slytherin built a secret room in the castle that the other founders knew nothing about.

According to this legend, Slytherin sealed the Chamber of Secrets so that no one could open it until his true heir came to the school. Only the heir can open the Chamber of Secrets, release the horrors inside, and let it purify the school and rid it of all those who don't deserve to learn magic. โ€

When the story was finished, the class fell silent, but not the sleepy silence of Professor Binns's classroom.

"What nonsense. A loud voice said. Everyone's eyes instantly converged on Phoenix.

"How do you know?" Draco subconsciously replied.

"Because I think my book is more realistic about this history. After speaking, he took out the book "Hidden Events and Magic in the Wizarding World" and tapped the cover lightly. Huge books flew up the back wall of the teacher, as if they were a teacher.

The giant book turned to a page with a sketch of Hogwarts, and a human face emerged, and began to speak in an old, frail tone: "In my schooling days, wizards were constantly fighting each other. It was a dark time when there were no laws. A robber, a thief, or an enemy of a headmaster, anyone can come to your door. โ€

"There were no unchartable charms or Muggle banishment charms, and there were many wars when I entered Ravenclaw House. Some are dark wizards or mudblood armies controlled by them, which I am afraid they learned from the Asian side. It's troublesome, because there are so many mudbloods that wizards can hide among them. The four principals often lead the upperclassmen to fend off the attacks of the Mudblood army or other wizard invaders. The castle also has a lot of defenses, and if an intruder enters the castle, they can protect or evacuate the students - the headmasters are adamant that underage wizards are not allowed to go to war, so we have very few men and often retreat to the castle - "

"All the secret passages that can leave the castle are known only to the prefects and headmasters of each grade. Until that year. "A group of dark wizards used the Imperius Charm to manipulate the Mudbloods into attacking the school, and they were not enemies of any headmaster, but some members of the wizarding family, who thought that Hogwarts was insulting their noble bloodline by recruiting half-bloods or Mudbloodsโ€”to let their children go to school with the Mudbloods, and by the way, half-humans." โ€

So that time, very few people chose to stay and defend the castle. We're fighting and retreating, but this time the wizard isn't a bad guy. They stormed the inside of the castle, bleeding profusely, and most of the students who stayed behind died, you know. There was a pause. "Of course, in the end we won. Our losses have also been severe. One of them, Principal Ravenclaw, fell under a chronic curse that was unbreakable at the time. I remember Barrow going to her daughter, Lady Helena, to fulfill Ravenclaw's last wish, but she couldn't make it back. Later, I heard that the two had turned into ghosts and returned, and no one knew what had happened to them. After that defense, Slytherin left long-lived, powerful magical creatures in place of Ravenclaw - but before that, Slytherin thought that Hogwarts should not admit students from non-wizarding families, but the other Headmasters disagreed, and before he died, Headmaster Ravenclaw made him swear that he would do his best to preserve the school no matter what Hogwarts would doโ€”"

Phoenix had put the book away. There was panic, suspicion or anger in people's eyes.

"But I think the heir probably learned about Hogwarts, a piece of school history, so he thought, well, like you said, purge those Muggle-born wizards. The bell rang at an inopportune time, and Professor Binns seemed to be in shock.

"Every grade? It turns out that the prefects are all in each grade?"

"He's a Slytherin, isn't he? How do we know he's telling the truth?"

"Perhaps, he made it up himself. โ€

A few hours later, everyone in the school knew,. Everything that happened in the 2nd grade History of Magic class. There was a debate among the students, and when many students asked if Hogwarts had any defenses in the afternoon, the professors answered in the affirmative. The topic of the Slytherin heir was also the focus of discussion among the students.

In Gryffindor's common room that night, the trio was also discussing this hot topic.

Hermione whispered, "I think Phoenix has a point, and the heir may have misunderstood the purpose of the Chamber of Secrets." But who wants to kick Squibs and Muggle-born people out of Hogwarts?"

"Malfoy," said Ron, "you heard him say: You are next. โ€

"Let's ask Phoenix. Harry suggested.

"Oh, I don't think he would have said that. I mean, he's a friend of Malfoy's, maybe not telling the truth. โ€

"What then?"

"Maybe there's a way, I read in the book. Polyjuice potion can turn you into another person, imagine us becoming three Slytherin students, ask Malfoy and everything will be clear. โ€

Hermione glanced hurriedly at Percy at the other end of the room before continuing, "But it's hard to get the recipe, Snape says it's in a book called Potions, it must be in the forbidden area of the library. โ€

"Find Phoenix, who has been borrowing the forbidden book section for a long time. Harry said. "If he had really been neutral, he wouldn't have told Malfoy, even if he had guessed our intentions. โ€

"We'd better use this as a last resort, Professor McGonagall has given him a note on Transfiguration, and I think Madame Pince might be suspicious. Hermione thought thoughtfully and said, "If we pretend to be interested in that theory, maybe there's some hope." โ€

"Come on, unless the teachers are stupid. โ€
