101 On Writing (52) "On the Cloth of Online Novels."
101 talks about writing so far, it has been half since the scheduled 101 post, and 101 tried to talk about a lot of experiences about online novel writing from his own feelings, such as the portrayal of characters, the creation of a sense of expectation, how to deal with the climax, narrative techniques, rhythm and so on. In fact, 101 wrote this series while sorting out and analyzing it himself, and he also gained a lot, and he had a general understanding of the principles and skills of writing, but there were two very important pieces of content 101 had never touched, one was "layout", and the other was "big climax".
Because 101 didn't understand what was going on with the "layout" and "big climax" before, in the last six months, with the writing of books and reading and analyzing books, the horizon has gradually improved, so today's post tries to analyze the "layout", and the next post analyzes the "big climax", and then makes a systematic summary of all the posts of 101 talk writing, and strings all the things that have been talked about.
Well, with the nonsense out of the way, let's start analyzing the "layout".
-----------
First, let's take a look at what the word "layout" means.
Layout bùjú
(1) [distribution; layout] for the overall planning and arrangement of things, cloth: furnishings, settings
The layout of the new urban area
(2) [compositionofapicture, essay, etc.] : Designs [of paintings and literary works] Methods or artificial states introduced in literature for theatrical effect (e.g., supernatural force)
(3) [positionofpiecesonachessboard]: Refers to the distribution of chess pieces
The above three meanings are vaguely explained in terms of the layout of the novel, and various statements about the layout of the novel on the Internet are also different, some say that "layout" is the worldview and world structure, some say that "layout" is the arrangement of contradictions and conflicts, and some say that "layout" is related to the emotional connection between the characters......
According to the understanding of 101, the basic meaning of "layout" is the overall planning and arrangement of things, "cloth" means furnishings, arrangement, and arrangement, and "bureau" means situation, situation, and situation.
Therefore, the "layout of the novel" is the unified arrangement of all elements such as characters, plot, story direction, contradictions, foreshadowing, climax, suspense, etc., that is, a summary of all the understanding of layout on the Internet.
A reasonable and subtle "novel layout" reads with clear clues, full of emotions for the characters, appropriate rhythm, prominent plot tension, and strong suspense.
A good "novel layout" is like a tidy room, with the living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and balcony in order, each with its own style, and can be organically integrated together, highlighting the owner's style and leaving a deep impression on the visitor.
And a poor "novel layout" is like a messy room, the living room is not properly arranged, the bedroom is dirty, the kitchen is greasy and dirty, the bathroom is stinking, the balcony is full of clutter, and the guests come in and see it, and no one wants to take a second look.
---------
After talking about the definition of novel layout and its importance, let's take a look at why new authors don't have the concept of layout and why they can't make a good layout.
101 When I wrote a book before, I only considered the idea in the conception stage, and some interesting plots caused by the idea, that is to say, the beginning according to the cheat YY.
For example, a certain protagonist who was bullied by others, and now he got a small bottle, which can absorb aura and quickly cultivate elixir, so his cultivation skyrocketed, and he raised his eyebrows.
It's a little more detailed, how the protagonist is hard, how he is bullied and writes a few chapters, how to get a small bottle to write a few chapters, research, use and cultivate elixirs and write a few more chapters, and then he can step on people and slap his face when he cultivates to skyrocket.
It doesn't matter how many chapters can be written in these plots, let's talk about writing them, and when the plots are finished, the map will be changed, and the protagonist will go on adventures elsewhere......
Many authors have this kind of writing experience, and there are even authors who write well at the beginning and have very popular book grades, but how to go in the later story, and their minds are still empty, so either the writing collapses at the beginning, or the story structure is thin and deformed, or bloated, and more often the plot collapses after 200,000 words.
The reason for all this is that there is no pre-planning and no understanding of the importance of layout.
----------
Let's take "The Legend of Mortal Cultivation of Immortals" as an example to discuss the "layout of the novel".
Because the layout of the novel plays a role in the ideation stage, that is, the question of "what to write" and "how to write" is decided before writing, so if the author has such a simple idea at the beginning-
A certain bitter protagonist, who was bullied, now got a small bottle, which can absorb aura and quickly cultivate elixir, so his cultivation skyrocketed, and he raised his eyebrows.
This simple idea is only enough to write 200,000 words, and at most 300,000 words, but a web novel also needs to write at least 2 million words, so this author has to expand the storyline, and he has to write a lot of storylines after the cultivation skyrockets.
So how should these rich storylines be conceived, which ones should be written, which ones should not be written, which ones should be written first, and which ones should be written later?
Obviously a headache.
Here 101 introduces the word "theme", that is, "theme" determines the main line of the plot of the novel and determines the direction of the storyline.
"The Legend of Mortal Cultivation of Immortals", the theme of this novel is to tell: the biographical story of a mortal named Han Li, who cultivates immortals.
Okay, once the theme is determined, let's expand our thinking and refine the theme keywords -
Why are mortals mortals, and not rich people, or geniuses, and why not mortal dogs, mortal pigs?
What kind of immortal is cultivating immortals? What privileges do immortals have? What supernatural powers do they have? Cultivating immortals, how to cultivate? Why is it not becoming immortals, but must be cultivating immortals?
A mortal cultivates an immortal, why does this mortal want to cultivate an immortal? What is his motive? What will happen if he doesn't cultivate an immortal? What if he cultivates an immortal?
Biography, biography, what is the biographical story of this mortal named Han Li because of his cultivation of immortals, and what inspiration can it give us?
------------
Please see, after thinking deeply about the theme, our eyes suddenly opened up a lot, and the story that originally felt empty and difficult to write in the back suddenly came out with a lot of inspiration.
But in order to put these ideas together organically, we need another important thing, and that is the "background".
The background of a novel is equivalent to a stage, setting a reasonable, rigorous and broad background, which is enough to make the plot and characters of the novel have a good space for development, and a book can be written with majestic atmosphere and ups and downs, without being limited by the stage not being big enough and the stage not being reasonable enough.
When it comes to setting, there are basically these elements:
1. Geographical distribution.
For example, the small village where the protagonist was born in mortals, Qixuanmen, Huangfeng Valley, and later Chaotic Star Sea, Dajin, Tiannan and so on. This all belongs to the human world, and later Feisheng went to the spirit world, the demon world, and the fairy world.
The geographical distribution can not only be set up simply by the name of the place, but also by the customs and customs in this area, for example, Qixuanmen is a green forest organization, everyone practices martial arts, and it is easy to get injured, so they are quiet to Dr. Mo...... These specific customs are conducive to the adventures of the protagonist, triggering corresponding contradictions.
2. Sectarian forces.
At the beginning of the Seven Xuanmen, there were two major conflicting forces, the Seven Xuanmen and the Wild Wolf Gang, and in the Yellow Maple Valley, in the Scarlet Trial Dungeon, the author introduced a richer sect of cultivating immortals, including those who domesticated spirit beasts, the sect where Nangong Wan was, and so on.
This part of the content needs to pay attention to the setting of grievances and entanglements between sects, as well as the root of grievances and entanglements, in immortal cultivation novels, it is often a dispute over immortal cultivation resources, and then the representative exercises of each sect, the representative characters in each sect, or male or female, or older or younger, but also set their relationship with the protagonist.
3. The system of exercises and the system of magic weapons.
This is mainly a system for the growth of the protagonist.,To apply the game setting, it's the skill tree.,Take mortals as an example.,It's the Changchun Gong at the beginning.,Then the blink of an eye swordsmanship.,Then the fireball technique and the control technique, etc.;The magic weapon is a small bottle at the beginning.,Then kill the Golden Light Master to get the rune treasure flying sword and the golden light cover talisman......
In short, the construction of the "background" is inseparable from these three elements - geographical distribution, sect power, exercise system and magic weapon system.
-------------
So the original idea, a bitter protagonist accidentally obtains a small bottle and embarks on the path of cultivating immortals - this is not enough to support the whole book, which is the theme of the whole book. And what kind of background should the theme be placed in? It depends on the constraints of the above three elements of background setting.
From this, the idea was further expanded to -
A mortal named Han Li, born in a small village, was selected by the Seven Xuanmen to become a disciple of the outer gate, obtained a small bottle by chance, and practiced the Changchun Gong of Doctor Mo, and since then he has embarked on the road of cultivating immortals, and after his strength has soared, he left the Seven Xuanmen, entered the Yellow Maple Valley, and went to places such as the Chaotic Star Sea, and finally became a great monk and ascended to the spiritual realm......
However, although the above ideas are further enriched, they always feel dry and lack an emotion in them, so we need to introduce two other concepts - "character will" and "contradictory conflict".
Take mortals, for example:
The will of the characters.
As the most important constituent element in the novel - the characters, each character has each character's desires, and each character has each character's character.
For the protagonist Han Li, his background is very low, just an ordinary boy called Erzi in a small village, but under his ordinary appearance, he has an extraordinary heart, yearning for the outside world.
This is the protagonist's wish, and it is also the driving force that drives the characters to fight against fate.
More than 7 million words have been written in the whole book, and the protagonist Han Li has broken through the bottleneck again and again under the desire to see the world and enter a higher world.
Character, character determines fate, which also determines a person's usual approach when he or she encounters a choice.
For example, a certain impulsive character who encounters bullying and oppression will fight first and then talk about it; a certain forbearance character who swallows his grievances first, secretly calculates and then takes revenge; or he has a very arrogant personality, he is bullied and is bullied, and he turns his head and forgets about it; and like Han Li, who is forbearing, low-key, and wise to protect himself, he always puts his personal safety and personal interests first, and acts before acting, and will definitely not act rashly without thinking clearly.
This is the "will" and "character" of this character.
Contradictions.
This is very important, and the conflict is the driving force behind the plot. Taking mortals as an example, the first contradiction is whether the protagonist can enter the Seven Xuanmen, the second is the struggle with Mo Lao, the third is the change of the Seven Xuanmen, the fourth is the handling of the grievances of the Mo family, the fifth is to enter the Tiannan Trade Fair for Zhuji Dan, and the sixth is to enter the Yellow Maple Valley......
The source of contradictions and conflicts is the conflicts between characters with different personalities and different aspirations in order to compete for their own interests.
For example, Han Li's first conflict, for him, he wanted to enter the Seven Xuanmen, because this was the only opportunity for him to break away from the small village, but for the Seven Xuanmen, in order to ensure its own hematopoietic mechanism, it could not choose waste to enter the sect, so it set up a strict assessment to select potential disciples.
Both sides of the contradiction have their own interests to protect, and no one can take half a step back, which leads to a fierce conflict, and finally the protagonist uses his character advantages and his own strength to overcome the difficulties and thus achieve his will.
And whether the reader is happy in this process is to see how the protagonist's character traits, the resources at hand, and his own strength are best used to defeat the opponent who is portrayed as extremely harsh and cruel.
-----------
At this point, we already have the "theme" of the story, which determines the main line and general direction of the story; we have the "background", which is composed of the three elements of "geography, sect power and exercise system", which is the stage of the story, and after the introduction of "character will" and "contradictions", we know what kind of flesh and blood to fill into the background of the story.
As a result, the idea is further enriched -
A mortal named Han Li, born in a small village, his nickname is Ertunzi, his appearance is ordinary but his thoughts are extraordinary, he has always longed for the outside world. After being selected by the Seven Xuanmen for the entrance assessment, he relied on his tenacious will and tenacious quality, and most importantly, he didn't want to go back to the village to be so ordinary forever, and finally worked hard to become an outer disciple.
But Doctor Mo was hidden in the Seven Xuanmen, and in order to cultivate immortals, he used the protagonist as an experiment, let him practice Changchun Gong, and threatened to expel him if he couldn't practice it. Later, Han Li obtained the small bottle by chance, and from then on, he was able to quickly cultivate Doctor Mo's Changchun Gong, and saw through Doctor Mo's insidious intentions, and killed him with the blink of an eye sword technique, which led to a new mystery......
After experiencing the drastic changes in the Seven Xuanmen, he embarked on the road of cultivating immortals, and his strength soared and left the Seven Xuanmen, entered the Yellow Maple Valley, and went to places such as the Sea of Troubled Stars, and finally became a great monk and ascended to the spiritual realm......
This idea seems to be much fuller, because it is not simply to write the protagonist to change the map, but also to highlight what he wants, what obstacles have been encountered, how to solve them in the end, and the character traits can also be seen one or two, because of the contradictions and conflicts in series, the plot seems to be ups and downs, very tense.
---------
At this point, some new authors may have written in a hurry, indeed, now we have a more mature idea of what story to write, the general background of the story, the main characters, and the main plot.
The general "layout" of the novel has been preliminarily established.
However, the 101 suggestion should not be written in a hurry, we still need to go through a very important step, which is "brewing"!
What is the role of "brewing"? It is to carefully scrutinize the plot, characters and settings to see if there are any unreasonable points, and also to see whether the contradictory relationships, human nature, emotions, story highlights and other elements have been fully explored.
The longer you brew, the more familiar you become with the world of the story, the more you understand the subtle objects inside, and the more comfortable and expressive you become.
For example –
Now that we have the idea for the previous version, let's imagine these questions:
1. Mortals cultivate immortals, among which mortals highlight that they are mortals?
In the original work, the author divides mortals into three, six, nine and so on, the small village where the protagonist was born is the lowest level of society, and the protagonist himself and his parents, brothers and sisters around him belong to the bottom, his daily life is to collect firewood, and then daydream, the biggest joy in the family is that the well-informed second uncle returns to the village to brag about the outside world. The parents' greatest wish was for Han Li to enter the Seven Xuanmen and find a job to earn money for the family.
One level higher than this level is the Seven Xuanmen, and the Seven Xuanmen is divided into outer disciples and inner disciples, and good inner disciples such as Li Feiyu, what is his wish? In order to get ahead, he does not hesitate to take poison, pull seedlings to help grow, and desperately pursue his beloved girl. At first, he was defensive about the protagonist, and later became friends who talked about everything. Why? Because the protagonist is not a threat to him, he just wants to become the top among mortals, and his wife and children can be hot on the kang, while the protagonist wants to cultivate immortals, which is several levels higher than him, so there is no conflict of interest between the two.
No matter how high the level, such as the head of the Seven Xuanmen, such as the leader of the Wild Wolf Gang, they fought for the interests of their respective sects, and the blood flowed like a river.
Doctor Mo is between this level and the immortal cultivator, he has his pain, he originally had a beautiful wife, but he was targeted by the unscrupulous immortal cultivator, taking away his physical body, he is angry at the shamelessness of the unscrupulous immortal cultivator, and admires the power of others. So character and values determine that he will take the path of evil, desperate for a better social class.
As for Doctor Mo's wives and concubines, they are the appendages of power in the mortal world, when Doctor Mo is there, his status is high, and when Doctor Mo is not there, he is coveted by villains; Always a group of pathetic and pitiful mortal women, the playthings of men who seek power.
After that, he also wrote about the fate of the emperor of the mortal world, the mortal friends of Teacher Li Huayuan, and the daughters of Doctor Mo, so I won't repeat it.
It can be seen that the theme of this book, how much story content is derived from the word "mortal" alone, and how many human feelings are written, which need to be carefully "brewed".
The intention of doing this is naturally very important, because if you don't write about the suffering of mortals and the helplessness of mortal fate, how can you set off the protagonist's determination to devote yourself to the Tao?
Therefore, the first consideration element in brewing is how to write and express the word "mortal"?
Here 101 gives a hint that interests and survival are the aspirations and pursuits of characters from all walks of life, and to write according to this basic criterion, the characters must be vivid, and this criterion can be applied to every novel, the difference is whether the pursuit of interests should be written so cruelly, it depends on the intention of each author. Mortal immortal cultivation is to write about the cruelty of this world, so the portrayal of this aspect will be particularly strengthened.
In Tomato's book, I rarely see the painful struggles of characters from different classes, and it is much more sunny.
-----------------
The second thing to brew is the word "cultivating immortals".
What are the "immortals" like? What is their world? What are their desires and pursuits? What is their emotional world?
How does "cultivation" manifest itself? How does it reflect the difficulty of cultivation? The suffering of cultivation?
Forgetting words is like this to show immortals, he did not directly write about immortal cultivators, because immortal cultivators are a group of people with high status, and it is impossible for them to be easily contacted as the lowest level of society. Therefore, he used Doctor Mo to profile immortal cultivators, so that many people began to think that this was a martial arts novel. He also used the tragic fate of little people such as Li Feiyu, Doctor Mo, and Qu Soul to imply that only by becoming an immortal cultivator could he get rid of such an involuntary fate arrangement.
When the protagonist Han Li obtained the small bottle and walked on the path of immortal cultivation step by step, Forget Yu did not directly write that he had entered a certain sect of immortal cultivation, but let him grope ignorantly, on the one hand, in order to pretend to be forced in the mortal world, and on the other hand, to convey an impression to the reader-
1. Cultivating immortals and cultivating immortals, this cultivation is not easy, as a casual cultivator, there is no teacher's guidance, there is no resources of the gate sect, everything depends on your own exploration. So at that time, Han Li didn't know how to use the exorcism technique, he didn't know what was going on with the talisman, he had a body of mana, but he might not be able to beat the masters of the rivers and lakes, but fortunately, the protagonist's brain was smart enough, and he used the blink sword technique combined with spells to get a set of martial arts that could protect himself.
2. This process also writes about the protagonist's mood changes, at first just to become a disciple of the Seven Xuanmen, but later found that he could cultivate immortals and pursued immortality, and his goal was raised. At the same time, he was also in pain, he had to live very carefully, he couldn't be as happy as Li Feiyu, he couldn't go to see his parents and sister, and finally went back to the village to secretly watch his sister get married.
It can be seen that cultivating immortals is to obtain all the rights that mortals do not have, but the most important thing that must be given up is family affection.
3. The awesomeness of the immortals. This was initially revealed in the upheaval of the Seven Xuanmen, the short Jin Guang Venerable, who had just learned a little bit of fur, was able to use the rune treasure and the golden light mask to pretend to be forced, and was also respected by the leader of the Wild Wolf Gang as a guest, but the low IQ could only decide that he was sending a treasure to the protagonist. Then after the protagonist got the treasure, he transformed himself into a righteous immortal, using his transcendent identity to get rid of the Seven Xuanmen, and to solve the difficulties of Dr. Mo's widow, and finally successfully entered the Seven Xuanmen. All this gives the reader the feeling that it is worth it for the protagonist to pay so much.
4. The suffering of the immortals. This is vividly shown in the subsequent plots, such as the dispute over Zhuji Dan; for example, those who are highly cultivated are called seniors, regardless of age or entry; Immortals have longevity, no matter how awesome you are, Shouyuan will die as soon as he arrives, so all immortal cultivators can only recklessly cultivate and compete for various resources. Immortal cultivators even have to give up their feelings in order to cultivate, and whoever still has mortal feelings is doomed to a bleak ending. For example, there is a couple of lovers, the man can refine the weapon, the woman knows the formation, I forgot the name, everyone go to the book, the ending of the two is similar to Liang Zhu's feeling, and they gave up cultivating immortals for love.
For the protagonist, the saddest thing is the emotional torment, because he has lived longer than everyone else, he is afraid that the person he loves will grow old in front of him, and he can't accept the love of a woman at will, and he has become an ascetic-like figure. Even when I went back to Han's house again and again, my mood was sad and embarrassing every time, and even when I broke through my mood after a long time, I thought of my parents and brothers again and again, and remembered my little sister.
--------------
It can be seen that the word "brewing" is the human nature, family affection, and theme of the novel story. What should be done to make the characters more vivid and full, the plot more ups and downs, and the themes more in-depth. Only by doing this, can a book deeply move readers, why do many readers have a high opinion of mortals, because forgetting to write is a realistic version of the story, a certain protagonist from a rural area climbed up step by step in order to mix with officialdom, and the result became more and more desolate, even if he had supreme power, but he lost the most precious family affection.
Han Li, in fact, was a very bitter character, he was far less free and easy than Wang Lin in the Immortal Rebellion, this person lived in the cage he had drawn, guarding his many magic weapons all his life in fear.
----------
Well, I believe you have a lot of ideas about the layout, and you can't wait to start the creation of the novel, right?101 Suggestion, don't rush to write, but continue to "brew and brew".
You may be in a hurry, why do you still have to brew? Aren't these things enough to write about?
I said, enough to write is enough to write, the content and material are rich enough, and the theme is clear, but in order to achieve the best effect, you need to arrange it carefully.
For example, the first step is to write about the suffering of mortals, the environment in which the protagonist lives, and the wishes of the protagonist.
This requires the use of the writing principles and skills mentioned before 101, such as how to set up the sense of substitution at the beginning, how to get gimmicks, and how to get foreshadowing.
Then the first big climax, such as the drastic changes in the Seven Xuanmen, how to pave the way, how to set off, how to be violent, and how to end it?
It is recommended that you still think about these episodes and prepare more, so I will not repeat them here.
In the future, I will have the opportunity to disassemble and analyze the first 200,000 words of mortals.
---------
Well, today we are analyzing "layout", how much do you know, and do you use "layout" to conceive a complete novel?
Oh, by the way, some people say that the layout of "Covering the Sky" written by Chen Dong is very good, and it can't be analyzed today due to space limitations, so keep it for later writing, and become a sister article to today's post.
When I was revised, I found that the relationship between the main plot and the branch plot was not discussed, so let's talk about it later!
