Chapter 33: The Unknown Agent
The speedboat washed up on the beach and stopped, and Patrick and G41 left the boat to land.
There were several corpses on the ash-covered sand, still warm, and had not been eaten by ED infected individuals. Patrick had a hunch that the Antarctic agents were not dead, but had landed on the island of North Lanland before them.
Climbing from the beach to the embankment, they soon came to a relic camp surrounded by improvised barbed wire, and there were other people lying on the ground besides the Luo Lian soldiers. There had been heavy fighting, half of the camp had been destroyed, and the entrance to the cordoned off ruins had been opened.
They walked into the camp and raised their weapons.
"Those people have a very high particle index of collapse, be careful. Madness said.
"I can see ......"
The people lying on the ground seemed to sense them, and they all stood up, and the low roar from the depths of their throats proved that they were no longer ordinary humans, but people with severe ED infection.
What is even more concerning, however, is who these people once were, and Patrick never expected to see them again in this form.
"This uniform is...... Survivor Alliance?!" G41 said in surprise.
Patrick raised his rifle and pulled the trigger, aiming at one of the infected, completely smashing his head.
"Don't be distracted, these people should have died forty years ago. β
"Hey, I didn't know that ED had the effect of resurrecting the dead. Madness said.
"They were undoubtedly survivors who remained on the island at the time, but they were infected because of an unexplained collapse leak 40 years ago. β
That's right, these are the people who chose to stay on Beilan Island after the war of annihilation of the Revolutionary Alliance. At that time, the dysfunctional Survivor Alliance was also gradually dying out.
"Because the ruins are active again, have you changed from a stable state to an excited state again?"
Since the number of infected people is small, Patrick and G41 easily eliminated the infected in the camp. Patrick was glad they had met only a little hardened skin, and he knew that there was a terrible kind of severely infected, with beast-like upper limbs and a body that had become a monstrous monster beyond normal times.
If he encounters such monsters, Patrick is not sure if they will survive.
Scavenging as many supplies as they could in the camp, they prepared to enter the ruins. It wasn't their first time coming, but the ruins of Beilan Island, which at the time were a major stronghold of the Survivor Alliance, may be just the tip of the iceberg, and there may be more unexplored places underneath.
The elevator they were now riding on was undoubtedly heading deeper than it had been, and when it stopped, the light illuminated a straight passage, and beyond the entrance was the walkway inside the ruins.
Although it had been many times, every time he stepped into the space of the ruins, Patrick still felt something, and his heart was shaken. It's a spectacle that humans can't create at the moment, and no matter how many times you look at it, you'll be struck by the grandeur of what lies before you and how small you areβby the subtle gaps.
They seem to have come in from the middle of the road, and on the right is a spiral staircase, and it is not known where it leads, but with the ruins underground, it is most likely a dead end. The left went all the way deeper, and at the end was a large purple barrier, a ghostly light that drew them through.
The purple light reflected on Patrick's face, and he couldn't see what was behind the barrier, and a voice in his heart was crying out, desperate for him to pass through.
Breaking the calm of the barrier, ripples rippled on its surface, and Patrick immediately felt a change in the air. After passing through it completely, the true face of the ruins finally appeared before his eyes. It is a large cylindrical interior space, where the walls and floor are no longer made of smooth and flat stone faces, but are made of a purple hexagonal crystal. There are no pillars between the floors, and all objects seem to float in the air.
"It's the first time I've seen ...... This kind of landscape. G41 sighed, looking around.
"Where did we teleport to?" asked Patrick.
"We're nowhere else, we're still in the ruins," said the madman, "but we're in the space behind the 'door.'" β
Not somewhere, but a space......
They continued towards the center, and there was only a dead-end road ahead of them, and there was a flattened stone beside the road. Patrick walked to the edge of the guillotine and looked down, where the violet lighting came from the very bottom, a cylindrical building in the very center of the space, with a protrusion on top of it that connected to the extension of the next floor.
"It's probably a spiral," Mad said what Patrick had in mind, "but where's the starter?"
"I thought you could easily break in. Patrick said lightly.
"Are you kidding?"
As soon as the madness finished speaking, a rumbling began to rumble under the guillotine road.
"What's wrong?" G41 asked hurriedly.
It looks like the spiral elevator has started, so let's call it that.
"Did you move anything?" asked Patrick looking back.
"Just moved this line!"
G41 points to the half-shaved stone, where a line of glowing symbols emerges on the smooth facet.
"So this is the start button?"
"I'm more inclined to the elevator's down button. He replied with a mad smile.
The cylindrical building rotates in a clockwise direction, rising upwards, and a protruding platform is connected to the open circuit, leading straight to the inside of the column. They walked into the spiral elevator, and there was also a stone statue on the round platform in the center. As Patrick approached, five elements appeared on the surface of the stone, the top of which was different from the other four in that it was orange instead of blue.
This is quite obvious. Patrick began to suspect that the relict creatures thought about things in a similar way to humans in general, when in fact the imagination of the relict creatures in his mind was not much different from that of humans.
"What to do?" he said.
"Let's look at it layer by layer. Madness replied.
"But if you can't get the data, isn't it pointless?"
"If you really can't do it, you can memorize it by rote, and I'll help you transcribe it into a mind cloud map. β
β...... Whatever you want. Patrick hesitated, and finally had to accept the solution of breaking the jar.
He pressed the second line of symbols, and the symbols immediately glowed orange, and the cylinder trembled and began to spin counterclockwise and descend. They are impartial, they turn exactly ninety degrees, and the platform is perfectly engaged with the second layer.
On the second basement floor, Patrick looked into the depths of the road, leaned the butt of his rifle against his shoulder, and strode forward. The light wasn't very good, but it wasn't to the point of using night vision devices. Even if it wasn't gloomy, the uneasiness in his heart grew as they went deeperβit was his instinct.
But there is another voice in his heart, which has been spurring himself on since he landed on Beilan Island, telling him that he must face the difficulties.
They turn to the left, and the straight passage changes to a staircase, which converges upwards in the shape of an isosceles ladder. Halfway up the stairs, a mortally wounded Luo Lian soldier sat slumped against the wall on the left, already dying.
"You...... Very badly injured, what the hell is going on?" asked G41.
"Ah...... Please be careful...... Long legs ......," the Luo Lian soldier said intermittently.
With the last bit of strength he used to point at the arched door above the staircase, he breathed.
β...... He's dead. β
"Let's go inside. Patrick said.
The door had been opened, and the light was shining through the room, making the walk easier. The room is a circular space, and although the layout is simple, the contents inside are not simple.
On the periphery of the room is a circle of devices very similar to the pods used to cultivate humanoids, and strange humanoids lie inside. Their bodies are sleek and shiny, and the parts of their bodies are spheres that are connected together by a membrane. They have no facial features, their faces are white masks, and their necks grow out of their upper bodies, arching up and back like snakes, and only then are their faces facing forward.
The hatch of the pod opened, and the heads of the creatures were shot open, dripping purple liquid.
Directly above the gate there is a console from which you might be able to find out something.
"Ha, what a surprise, I thought it was Luo Lian's miscellaneous that caught up," a voice came from the door that I heard not long ago, "I didn't expect it to be you, mercenary." β
It's a little strange that Patrick witnessed him fall, and that he was here now.
"Bowman?"
"Don't worry, it's just a fake name. Bowman smiled wickedly, playing with a pistol in his hand, "I'm curious about who you really are, but it doesn't matter, because you're going to be left with ashes." β
After he finished speaking, his free hand rested on the unopened cultivation pod by the door, and his finger slid down to the button. When the button was pressed, the gas inside rushed out and the hatch popped up.
"Say hello to the Sentinel for me!" was Bowman's last words before exiting the training room.
Then there was only laughter echoing in the hallway.
