Silent Hill Detailed Science Popularization (II)

The monsters in "Silent Hill" are also a highlight. Their appearance and features are the embodiment of the severely burned Alesha's fear, pain, hatred, and anger. Whether in the movie or in the game, these monsters are not just the product of "how ugly and how designed" just to cause horrific visual effects, and the religious connotations and sexuality/innuendo are enough to make these monsters worshiped by Freud's followers!

The first terrifying scene Rose saw after entering the world was an object on an iron bed, I didn't see what it was several times, it was said to be a person who died a terrible death, which is a restoration of the game scene. Rose later discovers that hanging from the barbed wire wall is a religious (the person is still alive) wearing a "protective suit". If I'm not mistaken, he has a broken hand, and he's hanging there in the form of a cross (again a religious allusion). The monsters that emerged next were still in a half-burning wreckage state, judging from their size and child-like screaming sounds, they were actually classmates who bullied Alesa at school, and these children existed in the inner world in the terrifying way of this monster after being burned to charred by the fire caused by Alesha's evil power.

The second monster to appear is called "Tights" by gamers, and is the only monster that appears in the watch world in the movie. From the red blood that spurted out when it was shot dead by policewoman Sybil, it was basically inferred that it was a person trapped in his own skin. It is said that when filming this monster, a real person was also dressed in an armless straitjacket and then synthesized by a computer. This monster is a portrayal of the painful psychology of the male protagonist in the game "Silent Hill 2" who has been self-bound to his sick wife for many years, and there is a reasonable explanation for moving here. Because Alesha was also forcibly bound when she was burned at the stake. In fact, can we do this here that "tights" also have some kind of sexual/suggestive meaning?

The monster that crawled out of the toilet was the cleaner who raped/raped Alesa after being bullied by her classmates and hiding in the toilet, and twice in the movie he used the name Colin on the ID card to hint at his relationship with the monster. The monster was bound with barbed wire in a twisted form, presumably as Alesha's revenge for being raped. And the monster's eyes are blindfolded with barbed wire, which is Alesha's punishment for seeing Colin's body when she rapes her. Only the infusion bottle on the monster feels strange, and it may also be a respect for the details of the game. The monster crawls with vine-like veins and poisonous bubbles along its arms, and its constant "tongue sticking out" is a sign of sexuality/suggestion, and according to the way it crawls with its legs lifted high, every time it crawls, the raw/colony/organ will be rubbed badly, and it is also Alesha's revenge for him to endure such pain.

In the footage of Rose's inner world, there are many corpses of adult males hanging upside down in cages. Why are they all adult men, I can only explain that Alesha herself is an illegitimate daughter, she has no father since she was a child, so she rarely has contact with men, and later she was raped/raped by men, which caused her to develop a great sense of distrust and hatred towards men. As Rose descended the stairs, I discovered that one of the male corpses was unborn (cut off?). Perhaps this is also because of the above reasons that led to Alesha's revenge on the man. It was also because of this distrust and hatred that Alessa did not pull Rose's husband into the world of Silent Hill. And those bodies that were hung upside down actually have an easy answer in the biblical book of Peter's Revelation. The people who are punished in hell are punished differently for different reasons for their sins, but being "hanged" or "hung upside down" is a very common one. In fact, the inner world of Silent Hill is "Hell"!

Later, the calamity of Rose encounters a large swarm of scarabs, or monsters known as "human-faced bugs". The three cultists who didn't have time to escape were eaten by bugs, and it seems that the seemingly sturdy and thick protective suits on their bodies are not very good, at most they should be able to withstand the venom spewed by the "tights" monsters in the following world. As for the origin of these bugs, some people believe that Alesa was bitten by a beetle when she was seriously injured or felt like being bitten by a beetle, but in fact, these are not based on any basis, at least not in the movie. It also seems far-fetched to think that the bug is a former classmate of Alesha, and I don't see how the beetle's face resembles a human face. In fact, these bugs are scarab beetles, which are believed to be the incarnation of the sun god Kohopura in ancient Egyptian mythology (of course, he is not the only sun god in ancient Egyptian mythology), because the ancient Egyptians thought they were the incarnation of the sun god when they saw the sunlight reflected by these jet-black beetles. Some people think that these insects are corpse worms rather than scarab beetles, but this is not contradictory, since the ancient Egyptians did pour the worms into coffins, which were believed to protect corpses from evil spirits. Another meaning of the scarab beetle in ancient Egyptian mythology is the "resurrection", and in the film they represent the hatred that arises when Alesha is "resurrected" after being burned at the stake. Jesus' description of hell in the Gospels of the Bible mentions that "worms are immortal" (scarabs can be resurrected with the transformation of the world inside Silent Hill), and the book of Peter's Revelation in the Bible states that those who persecute the righteous are to "stand in flames" and "be devoured by the immortal worms," while murderers and accomplices are "thrown into a small place full of vicious vermin, tormented by those creatures, writhing in pain." Black clouds of pests are attacking them frequently. The souls of the murdered stood by, and saw the punishment of their enemies, and said to them, "Lord, your punishment is just and right." Does the above remind us of the scene when the three Christians were eaten by the scarab beetle? Which of these people was not the murderer who wanted to burn Alesa at the time, and which one was not an accomplice of the female leader Ghristabella?

The next thing that appears is the visually striking "Big Iron Head" monster. This symbol, which represents the southern protagonist's own violent tendencies and self-judgment for sin in the game Silent Hill 2, is said to be a typical feature of the "Triangle Iron Head" is derived from the image of an executioner in a prison during the American Civil War in Silent Hill's history. In the movie, this monster who drags heavy steps through the inner world and kills people on sight is also really terrifying and shocking. The triangle of its head is the most stable structure in geometry, but in psychology and aesthetics, it is a symbol of "extreme instability", "violence", and "irritability". The reason why Alessa will be bullied, raped, and burned at the stake by her classmates is that she thinks she is a weak girl, and such a strong appearance just meets the conditions for Alesha's revenge. Some people have regretted that the triangular head weapon in the movie was replaced by a large knife from the very sexual/suggestive spear in the game, but I don't think it is necessary, because according to Freud's theory, not only the spear, but all long, raised, erect, hard, piercing objects, especially the weapon itself, are extremely sexual/suggestive. When Rose and Cybil, the policewoman, hide from the iron-headed monster behind the iron door of the hut, when the iron-headed monster "pierces" the iron door that closes the two "women" with a sexually suggestive broadsword, and "stirs" the broadknife that has "entered" the iron door back and forth, the "broadsword", "hut", "iron door", the "hand" and "latch" that the big iron head sticks in, and even the scarab beetles that are put in themselves have the ambiguous color of Freudian sexuality/suggestion. Reminiscent of the episode where the big iron head tore Anna in half in front of the church because Anna had thrown a stone at Alesha's biological mother, you said that the iron-headed monster would be torn up if you wanted to, why did you tear Anna's clothes and tear them again? When the big iron head picks up other people's clothes, he has a bit of forcible charm, is this Alesha's revenge for being raped? Floyd was smiling again

Judging by that big knife, it seems that the Bible is also going to get a piece of the pie. In the book of Revelation of St. John, it is written that in the Last Judgment, the Lamb (originally referring to Jesus) can it be a metaphor for the weak Alesa in the movie? Unveil the Seven Seals, slant out the wrath (consistent with the movie here), release four people, and the first one is given a "crown" (Iron Triangle?). The second was given a broadsword, and it seemed that God was going to smile with Freud.

The group of nurse monsters was originally the product of the long-term sexual depression of the male protagonist in the game "Silent Hill 2" or the product of Alesha's disgust with the hospital in "Silent Hill 1", which can only be explained in the movie as Alesha killed everyone around her and turned them into monsters due to extreme anger when she got the evil power, and it can also be known from the film that the fire in Silent Hill did kill some innocent people. The nurse in red, who had no eyes, was out of curiosity and saw that after the serious injury, Alessa was later gouged out of her eyes and has been taking care of Alesha's life. The nurse monsters are not killing each other with sharp weapons, but they are just reacting to feeling someone around them but because of the lack of light (the film says that they only react to light), and the movement of these nurse monsters when they walk is known as "spasmodic ballet", and they are said to be played by glamorous dancers and jazz dancers.

In the church's final "gorgeous" massacre, the real Alesa emerges from the ground beneath the dark red flames and steel equipment on the church floor, which has been corrupted by the blood of Rose (or the evil side of Alesha). When she kills the Sect Master, it is obvious that the first barbed wire to penetrate her body is from under her skirt and directly into her lower body, which is another obvious sexuality/suggestion. From the fact that Chrys's blue-purple dress is the same color as the uniforms of the students at Alesha's school, we can know that Chress may be a teacher at that school, and if you want to promote a religion, then it is completely possible to start with a child, not to mention that there are no church schools in the West. So in other words, the children think that Alessa is a witch, in addition to the "indoctrination of parents" mentioned in the film, it is very likely that there is an instigation and order from Teacher Chryse. Among them, when Chrese was talking to Alesha's biological mother, she closed the door and pushed away a few curious students, so she learned that the place where they talked was the school, and who else could summon parents at the school except the teacher? And it is precisely because the students were instigated by Chryse to bully Alesa that she hid in the toilet and was raped, so it is completely clear that Alesha killed Chryss like this in retaliation for her actions that caused her to be raped. In the end, Alesha divides Chryss in two, knowing how Alesha felt at the stake and painfully split into a good and an evil body, the so-called return of the human body to the human being, and the massacre in the church is the embodiment of Judaism's eschatology and Teutonic Christianity concept of the Last Judgment Day, and perhaps entering the Silent Hill is the opening of the Bible.

Tentative Interpretation of Miscellaneous Items in Silent Hill:

Rose drove home with Alesha, and although she was out of Silent Hill, the world was still gray, and the bustling gas station on the way to Silent Hill was empty. When she returns home, the movie uses the repeated alternation of Rose's real world in the gray Silent Hill with her husband's Huang Chengcheng to show that Rose is actually trapped in the surface world of Silent Hill forever.

The reason is very simple, at that time, Sharen was actually the person after the evil side of Alesha merged with Sharen through his gaze, or rather, Sharen no longer existed. Didn't you notice that Sharen had an adult look when she returned home, and as if she had never been to her own home, and she felt a sense of curiosity after entering the house? Alessa felt the true maternal love from Rose because she was once abandoned to the cultists by her biological mother, and wanted to trap Rose in the world of Silent Hill forever to enjoy her mother's love alone!

The action of sucking her fingers after "Sharen" got into the car was using mysterious power, and after she sucked her fingers, the car that could not be started started. There is an article that the car "flies" out from the cliff, I don't think so, from the picture of the car passing over the cliff, it is obvious that a bridge has appeared on the original cliff, which is also the result of the car's Saren sucking fingers using mysterious power to extend, and finally the space of the watch world is extended all the way to Rose's home.

I think that after the catastrophe, Rose actually knew that her daughter was not the original Sharen, and she also knew that she would be trapped in the watch world of Silent Hill forever, otherwise why would she go up and try to drive this car that she had driven before but it didn't work? Rose also knew that Silent Hill was surrounded by a void with no way out, so how could she dare to drive out?

The reason was that she knew that "Sharen" or Alesa would not let the car fall off the cliff and would definitely let herself drive out of Silent Hill. The world is still gray and the gas station is empty, Rose can't be unaware, and finally she enters the house and looks at the sofa in a daze, that is, she feels the presence of her husband, but she also knows that the existence of this "two spaces" is close at hand. In fact, all of this was arranged by Alesha, who sent her kind face Sharen out of the treacherous place of Silent Hill to be adopted, and when she grew up to the age of being burned at the stake, she recruited back to Silent Hill, took revenge and completed the merger, and then enjoyed her mother's love alone.

Silent Hill's theme:

1. Mother's love: Reflected in Rose's unhesitating search for her daughter in the face of such a difficult environment, Alesha's biological mother is safe and sound, both in the world and in the Last Judgment. This is revealed by the policewoman's remark that "in the eyes of the child, the mother is God" and Rose's reference to it, as well as the policewoman's shouting of her mother when she was burned to death.

2. Post-industrial era: Like the industrial cities in the United States and even other countries around the world in the post-industrial era, Silent Hill also symbolizes the end of an era.

3. Religious Reflection: Alesha was not tolerated by the local "cult" organization because she was an illegitimate daughter, and similarly there was the bad habit of drowning women before marriage/pregnancy in some areas of old China. The United States itself is a Protestant country, while medieval Catholicism burned countless "witches" in Europe, and countless innocent people were burned at the stake in various names, falling prey to religious fanaticism and ignorance. The most ridiculous thing is that in 1474 Basel laid eggs because of a rooster (a fighter in a rooster?). Burned as a "witch"! The United States itself was founded with various denominations from the European continent, leading to a wide variety of religious organizations in the United States today. In the chaos before the founding of the United States, all denominations considered each other "heretics," and as a result, more people were burned at the stake for "heretics" or "witches." So "Silent Hill" is not only a reflection of Protestantism on Catholicism, but also a reflection on itself by American Protestantism, just as Alesha's biological mother said, "Our faith is our gravedigger." ”

4. Reflections on good and evil: In the movie, the male policeman said that "the devil also has his own justice", if justice destroys evil by evil means, then is it justice or evil? What exactly is good and evil? Is there an absolute standard?

5. Land of Atonement/Judgment: This was originally the theme of the game Silent Hill 2, and it applies here as well. Silent Hill is actually the moral bottom line in everyone's heart, and it is the final self-torture that everyone has to receive. Those who have done bad things will eventually be judged, and the way to atone for their sins is to accept judgment, just like those believers in the movie, those who exonerate themselves for evil and do not know it, sooner or later they will be judged by the devil!

Silent Hill is a terrifying, oppressive, and fascinating place, and I don't know why I wrote "Take Me Back to Silent Hill" in the title of the article, as if I had been there before, and perhaps there was a mysterious appeal to the human heart. Director Ang Lee once said when he won the Oscar that everyone has a brokeback mountain in their hearts, and if this is the case, then I think there is also a silent hill in everyone's heart, which is the self-judgment in everyone's heart, and it is the place where everyone has to return to in the end
